It is an easy read book that is up to date on diseases, clinical trials, drug company pt assistance, as well as listings for oncology support groups..I showed this book to an AOCN who stated this was the most informative easily digested book she has seen. 5-0 out of 5 stars "Cancer Treatment" one of the best research
Cancer Treatment, by Charles M. Haskel, M.D. F.A.C.P.,4th edition is by far the most comprehensive book on the subject that I have read. It is not a book for the uninitiated in understanding cancer and all the myriad diagnosis and treatments. But with statistics rising to the fact that one in three people will have some form of cancer within their lifetime, it is important to know what the options you or your family member have or will have when diagnosed. The reader has to be strong and optimistic. This is a factual book with great hope and a lot of reality. Doctors are always positive when they look at you and your family member, but they only tell you what they think is best for you to know. If you are strong, astute, practical and want to know the real facts then read this book and go back to this doctor alone, with book in hand, (he will know the book) and then ask for a frank discussion with her or him. I am a writer, researcher and producer with many international awards. I highly recommend this book for your library. It I well laid out, not opinionated and worth the price. ... Read more

Book Description

The past thirty years has seen a huge expansion in the provision of palliative care services. Because Palliative Medicine is a multidisciplinary specialty - combining the expertise of oncologists, anaesthetists, nurses, and many other therapeutic groups, the effectiveness of such treatment can be very difficult to measure. Additionally, research involving terminally ill patients and their carers can also present a number of practical and ethical problems. In spite of this, current health policy demands evidence of effectiveness and value for money of health service interventions at all levels of complexity, including the service level. Evaluating Palliative Care: Establishing the Evidence Baseprovides an introduction to the theory and practice of the evaluation of palliative care services. It examines the methodological issues involved in the evaluation of palliative care, and outlines a practical approach that is readily applicable to many other health care interventions. In particular, research issues involving terminally ill patients and their carers are analysed and discussed, and approaches suggested for future work. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars hospice and palliative care handbook
This book is directed at home health based programs who also care for the terminally ill.
It is not specific to hospice care under medicare reembursement. It is of little use to nurses working in hospice care and at times is very inappropriate in its advice for the care of terminally ill patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Fundamentals
I am the Adminstrator of a Hospice and Home Health Agency and recently bought this book for our staff to use on a routine basis. To date I have had nothing but positive comments from the staff on its comprehensiveness and its ease of use. Despite the fact that I am an administrator and not a clinical person, I found the book easy to read and excellent in providing critical clinical and administrative detail to help in the day-to-day and moment-to-moment issues that we deal with in Hospice. ... This book provides comprehensive, practical guidelines on the responsibilites of those who leade, co-ordinate and manage volunteers in small hospices, large specialist palliative care units, and in general hospitals with palliative care teams.Volunteers are key workers, who often perform difficult and always important work.In the United Kingdom alone, there are thousands of volunteers in hospice work, a small proportion doing work with patients, and the vast majority doing equally valuable work such as driving, sitting with relatives, manning charity shops and telephones. As a result, Europe, Australia, the United States and Canada are very interested in the United Kingdom's use of volunteers.
