Book Description

In recent years cell-based technologies have gained significant scientific attention, and have become a matter of intense public debate as well. Namely, (i) tissue engineering, the construction of tissues and whole organs using molecularly-designed resorbable biomaterials to create new tissue de novo with or without transplanting cells; (ii) the potential use of human embryonic stem cells for transplantation and regenerative medicine (with similar potential for adult-derived stem cells); (iii) and gene therapy, in relation with cell transplantation, have taken their places as the most discussed biomedical issues of the day. New findings in biomimetic materials, cell signalling pathways, extracellular matrix receptors and ligands, growth factors, and the human genome project are motivating the developments in these challenging research areas.

This book includes manuscripts on tissue engineering, stem cells and gene therapies authored by world-renowned scientists of the field. The first section of the volume consists of four chapters giving perspectives for the current status and potential future of tissue engineering and stem cell technologies. The second section of the volume includes five chapters based on experimental and clinical data. In this section, the role of stem cells in liver tissue engineering, cell-based therapies in diabetes mellitus, and chronic degenerative diseases of the central nervous system, and adult-derived stem cell therapies are discussed. The two chapters of the third section focus on the biomarkers for tissue-engineered products, namely for tissue-engineered skin. The eight chapters of the fourth section discuss novel biomaterials developed for neural-, vascular-, aortic-, bone-, cartilage- and endocrine pancreas-tissue engineering applications. The last section of the book includes chapters on practical gene targeting applications, controlled release in gene therapy and tissue engineering, antibodies in cancer, acute-phase genes and phage-displayed peptide libraries.Proceedings of BIOMED 2002 -- The 9th International Symposium on Biomedical Science and Technology, held September 19-22, 2002, in Antalya, Turkey ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Blood and Marrow Stem Cell Transplantation
This book is an excellent resource for BMT nurses. We use it at our center for quick reference, and for training new BMT nurses. It covers diseases that are treated with transplantation, effects of transplant on each organ system, different conditioning regimens and specific side effects common to each, oncologic emergies, nursing interventions, quality of life issues, future trends in BMT, ethical questions, and much more. The 1997 edition differs most notably from the 1991 issue in that the pediatric chapter was omitted. The book is thorough and user friendly, with easy to read charts that organize information for quick reference. I use the book regularly for practice and for teaching, and plan to purchase each new edition that is released. ... Read more

Book Description

Alzheimer disease afflicts more than twelve million people worldwide, and its incidence is increasing at a staggering rate. People with the disorder are living longer than have those in previous generations, and they require interventions for quality-of-life issues associated with palliative care. However, the symptoms of Alzheimer disease often fail to place such persons into settings where palliative care resources are available to them. Indeed, clinicians and other caregivers may be unsure about what constitutes effective palliation in these cases. At the same time, the ethical issues involved in providing end-of-life care to persons with Alzheimer disease remain on the margins of mainstream bioethics.

In Ethical Foundations of Palliative Care for Alzheimer Disease, leading ethicists and clinicians from the United States and Europe explore ethical and scientific concerns about the diagnosis and prognosis of Alzheimer disease, challenges arising from applying palliative procedures to its symptoms, key philosophical and theological concepts central to our understanding of the disease and to end-of-life decisions, and the changing patterns of relevant medical, social, and economic policies. Cross-cultural, multidisciplinary, and state-of-the-art, this volume is a unique and important resource for bioethicists, clinicians, and policy makers everywhere.

Book Description

Recognize and treat fatigue as a major symptom of cancer and cancer treatment!

The Handbook of Cancer-Related Fatigue, by Dr. Roberto Patarca-Montero, the editor of the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome series from The Haworth Medical Press, focuses exclusively on fatigue as it relates to oncology. As more people every year are affected by cancer, treating the leading symptom becomes as important as treating the disease itself. Written by one of the world’s leading experts in the study of fatigue, this detailed work studies the causes, impact, and treatment of fatigue before, during, and after cancer treatment.

Considered one of the most distressing yet common symptoms of cancer, fatigue must be allayed to improve the patient’s quality of life. The Handbook of Cancer-Related Fatigue studies the close relationship between fatigue and cancer, as well as cancer therapies that cause fatigue. This book identifies fatigue’s devastating effects on the body and mind and offers solutions to maximize care for all types of cancer victims using documented clinical studies from around the world. For those interested in pursuing more information, an extensive bibliography is included for all relevant text.

The Handbook of Cancer-Related Fatigue provides extensive research on:

determining a diagnosis of cancer-related fatigue and recognizing the syndrome at all stages of treatment
long-term and short-term effects of fatigue on the cancer victim’s body and its impact on the patient’s care and treatment, even after the cancer goes into remission
the underlying factors within the body systems that contribute to cancer-related fatigue
numerous beneficial intervention techniques to allay the effects of cancer-related fatigue on the patient’s quality of life
clinical studies showing the statistics of cancer-related fatigue in the United States and around the world
identifying the relationship between cancer and fatigue using tables, references, sidebars, and an extensive bibliography
and much more!

Focused and thorough, The Handbook of Cancer-Related Fatigue is written for both cancer patients and health-care providers of all disciplines. Whether you are an oncologist, a therapist, or a patient, vital information is not only accessible but made easier to understand with handy charts, tables, and referenced clinical studies throughout the chapters. With fatigue categorized as one of the most important symptoms of cancer, it becomes imperative for anyone touched by this disease—personally or professionally—to keep a copy of this book at hand. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Challenge of Palliative Care
An ethicist, a physician, a nurse and an anthropologist, all working in the USA and Canada have combined their skills, their experience and, more importantly their sentitive insights into the kaleidoscope of emotions and reactions encountered when caring for those with life-threatening illnesses. The reader new to this field will probably assume that the cases are fictitious so incredibly complex is each one. The doctor, nurse or social worker who has spent any time in palliative care will recognise the challenges he or she meets every single day - challenges infinitely more difficult and demanding that purely ' pain and symptom control' If, as the authors suggest, this book is read alongside MacDonald's Palliative Medicine - a case-based manual ( also from Oxford Press incidentally )they will have some of the best teaching material in the field of palliative care. Criticisms ? Possibly a trifle too long and wordy and, so far as the details of medical care are concerned, a reflection of North American practise, at times different from the rest of the world but neverthless a book for everyone in palliative care to read and benefit from. A welcome addition to the fast-growing literature in this field of human need and response. ... Read more

Book Description

I wish there had been a book like this when I was fighting alongside my partner, Stella, as her 24/7 caregiver in a 19-month battle against the deadliest brain tumor, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Too often I felt sideswiped by unexpected obstacles. The Internet was a great resource, but having a book at hand illuminating the day-to-day struggle--treatments, questions, decisions, emotions, surprises--would have helped immensely.

After Stella died in November 2000, I wanted to write such a guidebook for caregivers and patients who, sadly, are following in our footsteps. As I reviewed hundreds of e-mails to and from friends, Brain Tumor List members, doctors, and others, I realized the book was already written. It provides an almost-daily, immediate chronicle of our experiences, including weeks in a Mexican clinic. A detailed Table of Contents and Index help readers find information about doctors, treatments, medications, and problems ranging from bed sores to radiation injury.

In addition, the book offers a positive message about love, devotion, and fighting for life that, I hope, will inspire others as they confront negativity on a daily basis in their struggle to prevail against all the odds. ... Read more
