5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time someone made this subject simple!
This wonderful reference book discusses all types of nutritional supplements, from vitamin pills to oils and teas. Two main sections let the reader look for either an Ailment (like allergies, overweight) or a Supplement (like acidophilus, garlic).

Almost 100 ailments are covered, including chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. The book describes symptoms and causes, suggests supplements and exact dosages, and offers many helpful tips, properly attributed either to folklore or science.

For each supplement, two full pages explain what it is, what it does, available forms (liquid, tablet, cream etc.), possible side effects, and why people use it. There's also an entire section devoted to drug interactions.

In my opinion, this book is truly courageous and refreshing. It tackles a touchy, complicated topic, yet it's easy to understand. It uses the latest scientific data, but it's simple enough for a 10 year old to use. Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner!
I am by no means an expert when it comes to vitamins, at least not until I got this book. It offers a great base knowledge of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and nutritional supplements, while explaining how to take them daily as well as using them to aid in treating common ailments. There are helpful sections that explain how suppliments can benefit you, how to buy suppliments, and how to use them safely and effectively. The chapters involving ailments give detailed information regarding symptoms, what causes the ailment, what supplements may help, and most importantly, when to call a doctor. While the book promotes the useage of supplements to aid in healing, it by no means discourages seeing a doctor. One thing I really liked about this book is that they give a listing of drug interactions. This is very crucial when you take supplements as you don't want them to counteract any prescription or over-the-counter drugs that you may be taking. Overall, this book is well written and easy for the novice to understand. It's a great starting point for all you beginners out there!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't loan it to your friends!
You won't get it back! It is excellent and you'll find yourself referring to it constantly.

The section on supplements is terrific and the section on various health concerns is also very informative and helpful.

You'll love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Place To Start
My Uncle loaned me his copy of this book and I soon discovered that I had to have one of my own. Reader's Digest picked the best layout. There are about 38 pages to get you started on what and why vitamins and minerals are good for us. Then, 2 large sections that are remarkably helpful. The first, a list of ailments, symptoms and recommended supplements. The second section, a list of supplements and their properties. There is also a section I found most helpful on supplement interaction with other medications one may already be taking. This book is so very thorough. It has totally motivated me to go through with my new year's resolution of beginning a regime. As with anything new, the book always reminds us to check with a doctor before starting any supplements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and Informative
"Today, conventional medicine has fewer quarrels with alternative medicine than in the past....This openness to exploring new methods of healing is especially relevant to what I see as the most significant trend in alternative medicine: the dramatic increase in the use of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other nutritional supplements. For many people, these supplements have come to play an important role in medical self-care, either as preventative medicine or as therapy for a variety of ailments." -David Edelberg, M.D., the chief consultant for this book

"The Healing Power of Vitamins, Minerals, and Herbs" is an A-Z guide and so much more. This book will encourage a deeper understanding of how various supplements can enhance your health.

These supplement may not always work miracles, but they do have proven benefits. A combination of supplements with a healthy diet and lifestyle changes (regular exercise, weight control, stress reduction) can help you avoid many trips to the doctor and help you avoid the "standard" medication or "prescription" refills we are all so used to.

Contents:

Comprehensive list of over 90 ailments discussed. The supplements and dosages to treat conditions is very helpful. This is the first section in the book and each ailment is given it's own two pages. It is easy to find your ailment in alphabetical order.

For each ailment, you will find these items discussed:

Symptoms
When to Call a Doctor
What it is
What causes it
How supplements can help
Supplement Recommendations
What else you can do
Facts & Tips
Latest Findings
Did you Know

Under Fatigue, you will not only find out that Hippocrates and Shakespeare wrote about it, but that there are many things you can do that do not include supplementation. Simple ideas like not skipping breakfast of avoiding caffeinated beverages. Could it be a vitamin B12 deficiency? Is it a result of stress? Too much exercise? The list goes on. Anyway, it is all very interesting to see the options.

Ailments sections include:

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth its weight GOLD !
This book can DRASTICALLY reduce the amount of time you will spend revising pharmacology. Most review books are written in a paragraph form that does not at all aid the visual memorization of the page ; Something that makes one lose focus as one reads more and, after sometime, the acquired information starts to melt together into a perfectly unrecognizable cocktail that can by no means help one in an exam setting , much less in a clinical one. This book, however ,with its question-answer format, presents the information in a very memorable and thought-provoking manner that makes later revision a MUCH easier task than the revision of other review books. With all due respect to the great and famous Lippincot Pharmacology , this book is a lot better . It has almost all the information in Lippincot but written in a more user-friendly manner. It is GREAT for USMLE Step 1. Be good to yourself and buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the subject.
This is an excellent book that demonstrates that prostate cancer is mainly a nutritional disease. We in the West have a far higher prostate cancer rate than our Asian counterparts. And, it is due to diet, not ethnicity, or genes. When Asians emigrate to our shores and adopt our Western diet (rich in animal saturated fat), their prostate cancer rates immediately rises up to our levels.

The author extensively details how to restructure our Western diet so as to prevent and cure prostate cancer. This entails reducing our intake of saturated fats, mainly red meat, but also reduce dairy products. It also entails eating more soy in every shape or form (milk, tofu, soy powder). The author also recommends specific supplements. Some are well known like the antioxidant vitamins (C, E). But, others are not so well known such as Selenium, Soy proteins, among many others.

The author provides a lot of information about the PSA test. He is the first to recognize that this test is not very accurate. But, he also recommends several back up tests and benchmarks which can really enhance both the accuracy and the information value of the PSA test. Some of these back up tests include: PSA density, Free PSA test, and ultrasound. If you take the PSA test, and you come up with a high value (>4), you ought to follow through with these other non invasive tests who may very well prevent the need for much more uncomfortable and invasive tests.

The author provides extensive advice on all the different options to cure prostate cancer. On this ground, this book is excellent for several reasons. First, every statement the author makes is referenced and well supported by scientific studies. So, it is not just the author's opinion you are reading about. You are getting information on current scientific knowledge. Second, the author has gotten detailed testimonials by doctors and other individuals (including Mike Milken former king of the Junk Bond set) on how they deal with their own prostate cancer. How they have modified their lifestyle, and nutrition, and what cure path are they taking. This is most fascinating because there are no clearly right or wrong answers at this stage. There are definitely multiple options on how to treat this disease, each with their own trade offs.

Ultimately, prostate cancer treatment is very much an individual decision. This book can provide you much valuable information to remove most of the anxiety associated with taking some hard decisions. In my case, it has removed a good deal of anxiety on how I can prevent this condition. Like in anything, prevention is the best defense. And, this book can help you do that.

If you are concerned about your prostate and overall health, I also strongly recommend the book "The Harvard Medical School Guide To Men's Health." It covers any ailment related to the prostate as well as many other conditions that affect the male gender. ... Read more

Twentieth-century science is too complex for any one reader's apprehension, so we look for stories that help us grasp its enormity. The jubilant discovery, demonization, and subsequent rehabilitation of thalidomide offers a wide-ranging outline of public attitudes toward science following World War II, and the authors of Dark Remedy: The Impact of Thalidomide and Its Revival As a Vital Medicine tell the story well. Historian Rock Brynner and embryologist Trent Stephens--who may have finally determined the drug's mechanism of action in 1998--treat us to both a devastating indictment of the under-regulated pharmaceutical industry of the 1950s and a penetrating study of thalidomide's reintroduction into mainstream medicine through the black market. The powerful anti-inflammatory properties of the drug make it a popular choice for treating arthritis, leprosy, some cancers, AIDS, MS, and many other debilitating illnesses, but it has only recently won grudging approval.Though the its tone can be acidic (in one instance referring to the "Utopian prosthetics custom-designed for the deformities caused by Utopian medicine"), the book is, for the most part, fair to the corporations that caused and then ignored the epidemic of birth defects, the victims who understandably tried to prevent the drug's revival, and the regulators who were too often bound by short-sighted legislation to do their jobs. The heroes and villains are larger than life, the stories and the science are equally compelling, and Dark Remedy ultimately combines the best elements of journalism and myth. --Rob Lightner ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A profound and moving tale
As outlined above, this book details the history of thalidomide, including its discovery, introduction into society, harmful effects, withdrawal, and eventual rebirth as a useful medication. It is very interesting and keeps your attention throughout the entire book. I am a physician and learned very much from this book, including some information about the FDA, and even about what thalidomide is used for today. I would say that you should read this book if you have any interest in medical history told in a narrative fashion. It will educate you on a tragic event in history and the amazing effects of medications upon human beings. Great, great, great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars How thalidomide caused the greatest medical disaster
Dark Remedy tells of how thalidomide caused the greatest medical disaster in history - but today is enjoying a comeback as a life-saving treatment despite its side effects. Dark Remedy considers how the drug became a nightmare in the 1960s, how it was banned, and how it's receiving new research attention today which may reinstate its use without its side effects. An intriguing medical history.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Read for Layperson and Scientist Alike
This short book is a compelling drama, complete with innocent victims, dark villians and compassionate and dedicated heros. But it is no simple account in black and white. Rather it is a textured retelling of the profound human tragedy of Tahlidomide, it's impact on the phamaceutical industry, the FDA's regulatory role, and the pursuit of scientific insight.

It will come as a surprise to many laypeople that Thalidomide, notorious for the extreme birth defects it caused when it burst upon the consciousness of the world in the early 1960s, is now used for the treatment of dozens of conditions. This book details the painful story of Thalidomide's devastation; the greed and indifference of it's corporate promoters; the dilligence and dedication of a handful of doctors who helped curtail it's spread, the tortured legal struggle of it's victims, and the difficult and collaborative process by which scientists discovered it's secrets and are putting it to use to relieve suffering.

The history is recounted on a human scale, making the drama real to the reader. The science, as complex as it is - including molecular structures and the mechanisms of DNA - is articulated in a way that makes it accessible even to the layperson.

I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thalidomide Reborn
Anyone who could pay attention to newspapers in the 1960s remembers the stories of thalidomide. Thousands of women took this super-safe sedative, or morning sickness suppressant, and found that their children were born with grotesquely stunted limbs like flippers, or perhaps no arms or legs at all. The dismal story of how thalidomide was invented, marketed, and withdrawn is a big part of the fascinating account in _Dark Remedy: The Impact of Thalidomide and its Revival as a Vital Medicine_ (Perseus Publishing), by Trent Stephens and Rock Brynner, but as the title implies, the story is not all gloom. The initial part of the story is simply shocking, with the German drug manufacturer displaying incompetence and selfishness throughout the product's development, testing, and distribution. When problems emerged, the company did a cover up, hired a detective to keep tabs on the doctors and patients who were complaining, and kept selling the drug.

The United States was a huge potential market for thalidomide. A subsidy of Vick Chemical Company (makers of Vicks VapoRub) was set to release it in the US in 1961. The company was sure it would get quick approval from the Food and Drug Administration, because at the time there was no requirement to show that the drug worked, it was up to the FDA to find any data to show any dangers, and pharmaceutical representatives did favors for FDA officials. The FDA, and the company, did not reckon on young FDA staffer Dr. Frances Kelsey, who was appalled by the sloppiness of the application. The story of the drug company's recklessness is shocking, but Dr. Kelsey's refusal to bow to heavy pressure, from both the company and her superiors in the FDA, is one of the inspiring parts of the book. She got a civilian service medal from President Kennedy, and it was due to her unflagging refusal to compromise that thalidomide didn't make it to American shelves.

Dismaying and astonishing are the stories of how the drug got approved elsewhere, and how the makers attempted to absolve themselves of any financial responsibility to the victims. But those are only part of the thalidomide story. The other part is that thalidomide is back. Results published in 1965 showed that thalidomide has an enormous capacity to relieve the pain of leprosy. This is important for lepers, of course, but there is not a huge population of lepers these days. More recently and more importantly, thalidomide has been used for HIV; it was found that it was good for the wasting of the illness and the mouth ulcers. From these results have grown the research that shows that thalidomide can be useful for victims of cancer (especially multiple myeloma) and autoimmune diseases such as lupus.

Current research on the drug (and author Stephens has done some of it) has pursued just how thalidomide caused its extraordinary birth defects, so that the drug company now making it could work on an analogue drug that has all the good effects and none of the birth deformities. In fact, such a drug is undergoing trials. Thalidomide, this excellent history and scientific explanation shows, has ruined lives, but it has also caused needed changes in drug approval processes, and still has potential for diminishing suffering.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Truth About Teratogens
This book is a terrifying and fascinating thriller that weaves a seductive mystery about the history about one of the best known teratogens: Thalidomide. This book explores one of the first incidents that prompted the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a program which seeks to identify anomaly inducing substances. It also outlines events that prompted the FDA to be considerably more discerning about the level of testing that goes into approving these drugs. 'Dark Remedy' brings a drug with a dark past back into the limelight as a drug with vast potential to change lives for the better. Well written and easy to read this book avoids medical jargon making it a perfect chioce for the layperson seeking to educate themselves about this tragedy. Although these children suffered, two things redeem the situation ... Read more

As a radiology resident in a very busy county hospital, I have all that I can do to keep up with the workload, much less find time for academic reading. Prior to the 1999 in-service examination, I read the ACR syllabus and Cardenosa's "Breast Imaging Companion."

The combination of these two texts served me well, as I scored in the 100th percentile on the breast imaging section. Cardenosa's book is concise, filled with both "classic" and atypical images. It is a rapid read, while maintaining a reasonably comprehensive level of dialogue.

I would reccomend it to anyone learning mammography for the first time and, furthermore, I would recommend that you keep it nearby, as you will refer to it frequently for troubleshooting in this difficult field. ... Read more

Book Description

Virtual colonoscopy is a rapidly developing technique that promises to be safer, more economical, and less intrusive than conventional diagnostic tests for colon cancer. This procedure allows the physician to look inside the body without having to insert a long tube into the colon, as in conventinal colonoscopy, or filling the colon with liquid barium, as with barium enema. VC has attracted the attention of the media and the public as a much-lauded alternative to current techniques.

In response to this demand, renowned radiologist Dr. Abraham Dachman and a distinguished list of international contributors have put together a comprehensive atlas that depicts the entire range of this new technique. The illustrations are clear and true to life, showing normal and abnormal findings in virtual colonoscopy. This unique resource also points out critical clinical elements in using VC and summarizes the state of the art.

The "Atlas of Virtual Colonoscopy" fills a void for all radiologists and gastroenterologists needing to or simply interested in learning about this exciting new technique. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the c-note
The illustrations alone make this a worthwhile buy, whether you're a gastroenterologist or just extremely interested in colonoscopies. Ever since Katie Couric's live colonoscopy on TODAY, I've been intrigued by the procedure, considering it something of an art form as well as an intrusive medical procedure. But Abraham Dachman and his team of writers make a compelling argument for the use of Virtual Colonoscopy in lieu of long tubes, nano-cameras, and liquid barium. It's a brave new world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars concise and practical
Along with Shirley Ottos' Oncology Nursing, the Core Curriculum, with it's concise outline format helped me study for and pass my OCN exam. The 'core' will accompany me on my unit for quick, easy reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Oncology Certification study book
I used this book, and the Study Guide for The Core Curriculum for Oncology Nursing textbook, as well as the OCN 3 exam booklets from ONS, and did really well on the OCN Exam that I took in Washington D.C., April 17, 2002. This book helped me so much on being able to pass that test. It is set up exactly like the OCN Test Blueprint. I would study and work my way through each chapter and then test myself in the study guide book, and then I would test myself on one of the OCN Exam booklets, and then I would go through the book again.

5-0 out of 5 stars You MUST buy this to pass the certification test
Truly this is your bible for passing the National Oncology Certification Test. This and the Q and A study guide and some practice tests directly from ONS were all I used to take the test this fall. All of us at my work place who used these same materials passed. You really don't need anything else. The only problem is the book is presented in an outline form which makes for difficult reading for pleasure's sake alone but good for studying. Also a good reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars You can pass the test
The Oncology nurse certification test is not an easy one, but this book can help. You know all of the drugs and side effect management stuff, but who remembers all those statistics and obsure disease symptoms?? If you are taking the test, this book is great! ... Read more

Medicine Hands is a practical book written for both health professionals and the lay person. Research is highlighted with anecdotes, stories, and vignettes of cancer patients, massage therapists, caregivers, hospice workers and other health professionals. 5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of information...
I found this book to be a true inspiration for me. I found out about it through one of the Massage magazines and I can honestly say it was one of the best and most important purchaces I made since I graduted from massage school in 1999.

I have used it as a reference while doing volunteer as an LMT on the oncology unit at my local hospital and it was extremely helpful. Staff and students alike were very impressed with it when I showed it to them. The layout of this book is very user friendly and the appendixes and references in the back were excellent.

I personally feel it's a good ideal to get further training related to the oncology in the clincal enviroment as far as massage concerned. Yet this book was also very clear as about the limitaions and contraindications which made me feel at ease. This book is an excellent starting point for thoes wishing to give care to people facing Cancer and is quite thorough in all topic covered. It can help the therapist, student therapist and/or caregiver understand the challenges and rewards of providing the gift of touch at a time when it maybe needed it most.

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderfully insightful book
As a massage therapist, I was trained that massage was generally contraindicated for cancer patients. Gayle does a wonderful job of explaining why massage is appropriate, the chemistry behind metastisis and the issues around massage treatment along the continuum of cancer treatment. It also has a chapter on death and dying that I recommend to many patients. I have made this a required text in the therapeutic massage program as our local community college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I was privileged to take a weekend seminar from Gayle MacDonald, and I purchased the book at that time. Her amazing compassion and caring are evident in every line of this book. If you have been told that massage is not appropriate for people living with cancer, this book will change your thinking. The book also gives a very good basic description of the process that cells go through to become cancerous, and de-mystifies some of the treatments that patients go through. Medicine Hands is a practical, down to earth book that is well worth reading. It is an excellent book for anyone living with cancer - in one's self or in a loved one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Massage does ease physical & emotional pain.
The American Cancer Society has recently listed Massage as a form of releif of pain for cancer patients. This was a big step and Gayle MacDonald's book is the next step. Often times the touch that cancer patients are recieving is not comforting, it is only related to often painful treatment. To be touched by someone with a compasionate intent is amazing. Gayle exlpains that healing touch is not the ability of a person to literaly touch and cure someone, healing is a sense of peace, a pain free hour, quality of end of life. Gayle does an amazing job of getting thoughts and techniques out to help people wishing to become more educated in this area of massage. Gayle is sharing imortant knowledge and it is written in a way that a student, Massage Therapist of 10 years, or family member of someone with cancer can read and gain an amazing understanding of the best way to treat those with cancer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE FISRT ATLAS OF ONCOLOGY PET-SCAN
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is an imaging technique that provides physicians and researchers with unique information about the body's chemistry. Unlike computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which primarily examine anatomy, PET allows us to visualize body function.

Positron Emission Tomography is a non invasive, diagnostic imaging technique for measuring the metabolic activity of cells in the human body. It is useful clinically in patients with certain conditions affecting the brain and the heart as well as in patients with certain types of cancer. The field of PET has been quickly emerging into clinical diagnostic medicine. PET has been in clinical use since the early 1990s.

There is considerable information about PET inside this book

This Atlas attempts to distil more than five year's of clinical PET imaging, it indicate chapter after chapter, to clinicians the role of PET in improvings patient care.

In Introduction and inside the first part, readers can find some information about technical aspects of imaging and the scientific bases of nuclear physics, positron annihilation, imaging acquisition, and scanners.

In the Second part, the most important, authors comment each clinical issues. 1. Lymphoma 2. Lung Cancer 3. Breast Cancer 4. Head & Neck Cancer 5. Colorectal Cancer 6. Melanoma 7. Primary Brain tumour And Evolving oncology applications (Thyroid & para, Oesophagus, Liver, Renal...)

In the Last Part, this book talk about other applications of PET in Neurology and Psychiatrics, Cardiology Fields.

Inside each chapter, you can find important indications, suggest algorithm incorporating PET, lot of illustration B&W and color, clinical cases, and bibliography.

Most of this atlas is devoted to oncology. I was very please to read this Atlas.
