4-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive overview
It will be interesting to see just how long radiological techniques will be used in cancer therapy in the twenty-first century. The role of genetics, particularly gene therapies are making some progress in the treatment of certain types of cancer. There have been some problems with gene therapies, these making the headlines in the major media. Therefore it is probably safe to assume that radiology will have a presence in cancer clinics in the coming decade.

It has certainly had a presence throughout the twentieth century, and this book is an indication of its vast use in cancer therapy. Those interested in radiology will find a comprehensive overview. My sole interest in the book was in gaining a background in the biology and physics behind radiation dose calculations in human tissue. Therefore I only read sections 1 and 3 (the latter discussing future modalities) instead of Section 2, which discusses clinical issues, and which are a major portion of the book.

Since the book is targeted towards readers who are medical students, physicians, or medical researchers, it is not surprising to find that the physics behind the interaction of radiation with human tissue is only done from a phenomenological perspective. A more in-depth discussion would perhaps not assist physicians in their administration of radiation dose to a patient. The authors do a fine job of relating to the reader what is going on physically when X-rays and particles such as protons, electrons, or heavy ions interact with matter. They also discuss just how to determine the dose delivered to the patient and the dosimetric techniques that are used. A more thorough discussion of the interaction of radiation and particle beams with matter would involve techniques from quantum field theory, bringing the book out of the range of the average medical student. Actually though, in spite of the importance of techniques such as Monte Carlo simulations in determining dose distribution (which the authors discuss briefly), and the role of elementary particle events in these simulations, the literature on radiology physics does not usually approach dose calculation from this fundamental level.

The authors take a look at the future of cancer therapies in the last part of the book, and the discussion is fascinating. Some of the areas they discuss are particle radiation therapy involving proton and neutron beams. They discuss the differences from a physical standpoint in the use of these beams as compared to the usual beam modalities. Another area they discuss are gene therapies, and although brief, the authors give the reader an idea of just how this technology works.

Looking further into the future, and this is justified by the current incredible rate of technological advancement, one can only wonder what new techniques will be discovered in cancer therapy and prevention. Further improvements in gene therapy using techniques from genetic engineering comes to mind. Another possibility is nanotechnology. This is an exotic possibility at the present time, but there is every indication that nanotechnology will reach fruition by the end of the second decade of the twenty-first century. Its medical ramifications are awesome.

Book Description

When the first results from patient trials appeared on Dr. Daniel Vasella's desk in April 1999, the chairman and CEO of Novartis sensed that an important chapter of medical history was about to be rewritten. The results indicated that Gleevec, the tiny orange capsule -- the development of which he had spearheaded -- was working wonders to arrest a life-threatening form of blood cancer. Here, for the first time, Dr. Vasella recounts the step-by-step challenges of bringing this revolutionary medicine to market and producing it in large enough quantities to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families everywhere in the world.

The leaders of major pharmaceutical companies rarely speak out so candidly and comprehensively about their businesses, but in this unique, groundbreaking book Dr. Vasella takes us behind the scenes and reveals the enormous pressures, the heavy costs, and the high risks involved in betting heavily on a drug like Gleevec -- regarded by many as the most exciting cancer breakthrough discovery yet -- while staying focused on the ultimate goal of saving lives.

In this clear and exciting account, Dr. Vasella explains why Gleevec is nothing less than a scientific breakthrough, one that medical experts believe already is revolutionizing cancer therapy. For decades the standard way to combat cancer has been to remove it surgically and/or to use toxic drugs or radiation to destroy cancer cells. But these techniques also attack normal tissues and frequently leave patients overwhelmingly weak. Side effects can be so severe that patients even die from therapy. In contrast, Gleevec is the first "designer drug" for cancer therapy, specifically targeting a cancer-producing molecule and "fixing" the malfunction, leaving healthy cells intact. It is hoped that Gleevec will be a paradigm for other molecularly targeted drugs that will work on cancers with larger patient populations, and the implications of this are enormous.

Magic Cancer Bullet is the first authoritative account of how Gleevec was developed and produced; of how on May 10, 2001 it won the swiftest passage from the Food and Drug Administration ever for a cancer drug; of how, even now, it is changing the lives and outlooks of patients everywhere, bringing hope in bleak and dire circumstances. From his unique vantage point as the man who guided this lifesaving "magic cancer bullet" from the laboratory to the pharmacy, Dr. Daniel Vasella gives us an insider's account of the scientists, the Novartis executives, and the Gleevec patients on this remarkable journey and he shows why the story of Gleevec is an intriguing part of the search for a cure to the scourge of cancer, one of the greatest human afflictions of our time. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Rent it. Nice reading
The issue is about cancer patients, their pain and a miracle drug.

The book sails through story of development of "Gleevec" pill. This medicine cured people with specific kind of cancer and saved lives.

It shows that a great deal of effort required over a sustained period of time from individual contributors that brought such a revolutionary medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Inside Story
This is an excellent account of the way things really happen. The media sometimes beats the political drum so loudly about the pharmaceutical industry being an evil empire that the other side of the story is never heard. Here is an inside look from the perspective of dedicated scientists, committed business executives, and the people they serve. If you want to base your opinions on all aspects of the issue, this is required reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will offer you an inside view....
As an employee within the pharmaceutical industry, this book will offer the reader an inside view of how a product goes from the research phase to finally, the consumer. As a father to a child with cancer, this book offers hope that someday a cure will be developed to eliminate cancer. A must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gleevec Book
As someone who has CML, the disease that Gleevec was developed for, and as someone for whom Gleevec has been a life-saver, I can attest to the the fact that this book is a valuable and interesting read.

This book makes note of the important part the internet played in the rapid FDA approval of this "proof of concept" drug. It also tells the personal story of how several persons that have used this drug lives' have been affected. Some parts of this book may bring tears to your eyes.

It is becoming apparent that Gleevec will be of help against several other diseases, besides just CML.

As a "proof of concept" drug, Gleevec is truly unique, promising and exciting, and that fact alone makes the telling of its story so worthwhile.

I am totally satisfied with this book, and am glad that I bought it. ... Read more

Book Description

The rising number of incidences of melanoma has led to increased interest in the disease from diagnostic, management, and basic science perspectives. The Melanocytic Proliferation describes the pathobiology of pigmented melanocytic lesions, and provides guidelines for their diagnosis and management as they affect the skin and mucosas.
Extensively illustrated, this book is divided into four parts: the biology of melanocytes and malignant melanoma; nonmelanocytic lesions (e.g., lentigo, congenital nevi, compound nevi); melanocytic lesions with the potential to develop as melanoma (e.g., dysplastic nevi); and malignant melanoma (e.g., radial and vertical growth phases). Offering extensive discussions of each lesion, The Melanocytic Proliferation covers clinical applications, histology, differential diagnostic features, diagnostic algorithms, immunohistochemistry, electromicroscopy, and, where applicable, treatment, prognosis, and adjuvant therapy.
The Melanocytic Proliferation is an excellent and indispensable resource for dermatologists, pathologists, dermapathologists, and surgical pathologists.

4-0 out of 5 stars Goal Achieved!
A Case Manager's Study Guide: Preparing for Certification works well for the motivated self learner. The information contained in the book is thorough and concise. I felt prepared for the test after I completed my studies. The test questions, with the added benefit of having them on a CD-ROM, provide the learner with an excellent opportunity to prepare for the certification test environment, especially if you have test anxiety! I just received notice that I met the qualifications and passed the examination to be qualified as a Certified Case Manager(CCM).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Concise Review for the CCM examination
The Case Manager's Study Guide with CD-ROM was the only reference book I used to prepare for the CCM exam. It is a very informative and concise manual which, unlike many books on the subject of Case Management currently on the market, is very easy to read and understand. The CD-ROM was especially helpful in preparing for the certification exam. And, I passed the examination with flying colors! Even now, I keep the manual in the office to use as a reference guide when I need clarification on certain issues.

When a Parent Has Cancer is a book for families written from the heart of experience. A mother, physician, and cancer survivor, Dr. Wendy Harpham offers clear, direct, and sympathetic advice for parents challenged with the task of raising normal, healthy children while they struggle with a potentially life-threatening disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book for an unfortunate topic
When my husband was diagnosed with cancer our children were 5 and 7 years old. This book gave us the tools to use to talk to them about cancer. Illness, chemotherapy and even death were topics that we suddenly had to confront. Dr. Harpham's book provided insight in dealing with a frigtening topic in a calm and reasuring manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars When a parent has cancer:
This is an excellent guide for being a parent, not just a parent with cancer. You can tell that Dr. Harpham has put enormous energy into making sure her children are affected as little as possible by her illness. Our children would be so lucky if they were not affected by our bad days, our obcessions, or our tainted view of reality. There are a lot of feel good about being a parent books out there. This is an excellent practical guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a stunning book written by a survivor
Based on her own experiences with cancer, Harpham offers insightful, compassionate and sound advice to parents. Most books on this subject talk about how to break the news to children and deal with their initial reaction. This book goes beyond that, dealing with the issues that arise during the long months of treatment. Becky and the Worry Cup is a wonderful companion piece that will comfort children of all ages ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Give this to every Cancer patient you know!
When my sister was diagnosed with cancer I sent her just about every book I could find on cancer survival, inspiration and the like. But when I stumbled onto this set, 2 tapes and a book, without listening or reading it, I sent it on. One week later she called me and told me that this set had helped her more than any other single book or tape out there. Most importantly it helped her deal with her fear, set her priorities for healing strategies in order, gave her a concrete meditation for invisioning the actual immune system, and discussed indentifing her passions and dreams, as they would help her survive, and much more. She followed the advice absolutly, started horse back riding again (her passion) and lived another 8 years, when she had been told only 6 months. Thankyou Dr. Simmington, for the quality time you gave my family, and the peace you gave my sister.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reality, help, hope and humanity
I read this book some years ago and it was very profitable, my father was ill not a cancer but the doctors feared it and the approach of the ill person in the book help me and my sister to understand the disease and our father behaviour a lot. We accepted that our father told us that his body was painful and that he was going to death. It was one his fear. It is one of the first time i saw him crying before us without hidden it to my sister and I. He is well now, despite of a prostate cancer some year ago but after. Thanks very much. I would appreciate that you inform me about your next meetings in France and in Europe. I met M. Carl Simonton some years ago in a meeting, and it was for me a great great moment. Thanks a lot for all the work you are doing, for the hope you give to everybody in pain, for your way of thinking, your honesty and your sense of humour

5-0 out of 5 stars A "MUST" for anyone with cancer !
I purchased the cassette tape of the book "Getting Well"...I've done MUCH research on cancer and alternative medicine, as it has been quite clear that the typical medical therapies alone are not usually enough to combat this monster. I found this book/cassette to be excellent and, further, the ideas expressed by Dr. Simmonton are what I consider one of the neccessary steps towards healing from cancer. I had previously seen the video called "Getting Well Again", which was very good, and this tape "Getting Well", is absolutely great. I'm grateful to Dr. Simmonton for seeing and sharing with us the importance of treating cancer in a more complete way. As an Oncologist and a human, his knowledge and dedication are admirable. Thank you! ... Read more

Book Description

A powerful and substantiated expose of the medical politics that prevents promising alternative cancer therapies from being implemented in the United States.

* Focuses on Harry Hoxsey, the subject of the author's award-winning documentary, who claimed to cure cancer using herbal remedies.

* Presents scientific evidence supporting Hoxsey's cancer-fighting claims.

* Published to coincide with the anticipated 2000 public release of the government-sponsored report finding "noteworthy cases of survival" among Hoxsey patients.

Harry Hoxsey claimed to cure cancer using herbal remedies, and thousands of patients swore that he healed them. His Texas clinic became the world's largest privately owned cancer center with branches in seventeen states, and the value of its therapeutic treatments was upheld by two federal courts.Even his arch-nemesis, the AMA, admitted his treatment was effective against some forms of cancer. But the medical establishment refused an investigation, branding Hoxsey the worst cancer quack of the century and forcing his clinic to Tijuana, Mexico, where it continues to claim very high success rates. Modern laboratory tests have confirmed the anticancer properties of Hoxsey's herbs, and a federal govenment-sponsored report is now calling for a major reconsideration of the Hoxsey therapy.

When Healing Becomes a Crime exposes the overall failure of the War on Cancer, while revealing how yesterday's "unorthodox" treatments are emerging as tomorrow's medicine. It probes other promising unconventional cancer treatments that have also been condemned without investigation, delving deeply into the corrosive medical politics and powerful economic forces behind this suppression. As alternative medicine finally regains its rightful place in mainstream practice, this compelling book will not only forever change the way you see medicine, but could also save your life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent History of Hoxsey & Alternative Cancer Treatments
I have been reading books on Cancer for several years now. I found "When Healing Becomes a Crime" a very well researched and written book. I would highly recommend it for those who want to know more about alternative treatments of Cancer and how the current treatments, both traditional and alternative, came into being (such an odd mis-use of the words since the "traditional" treatments often have only been around a few years to a few generations and "alternative" treatments have often been used throughout many cultures and many hundreds of years).

There are two main parts to the book. Part 1 is about the life of Harry Hoxsey, his work on healing cancer, and his battles with the AMA. This part of the book reads like a novel. The story is incredible, well researched, and is very very interesting to read. It is also very hard to put down. Part 2 and Part 3 discuss many of the aspects of alternative medicine and its relationship to what is called "traditional" medicine. There is a lot of information in these parts to provide a basis for further research. One thing this book doesn't do or even try to do, is to provide in-depth research on the viability of different treatments. For this information, you will need to do more research and the book does offer an incredible amount of references for those interested.

I have looked a lot into the cause of cancer, the prevention of cancer, and the healing of cancer. I believe the causes to be primarily toxins or foreign substances within our food, our water, our air, and our environment which affect our immune system and our cellular regeneration. I believe prevention can be best done by a plant based organic diet with periodic cleansing fasts, and some method of healing movement such as yoga, tai chi, and certain types of massage. I truly believe most cancer can be healed, but only if one looks at it holistically and is willing to make life changes. While "Traditional" western medicine often only suppresses or removes symptoms, alternative treatments such as Hoxsey's, typically focus on working with the bodies immune system to heal itself. For alternative treatments to work at their best (and traditional treatments as well), it is very important for the patient to improve other facets of ones life at the same time.

Additional areas of knowledge to heal cancer which are not discussed in detail within this book, but which may be of extreme importance, are "cleansing fasts" to remove toxins within the body, "plant based organic diets" to promote the best health of the cells within the body, "personal and social psychology" to promote the best environment for the healing and cellular regeneration of the body, and the use of yoga, tai chi, and similar physical systems which can promote a tremendous amount of healing within the body. Some excellent related books are (a mixture of books ranging from highly researched, to highly emotional and inspiring):

1. "Reclaiming Our Health" and "The Food Revolution" by John Robbins.
2. "Fasting and Eating for Health" by Joel Fuhrman M.D.
3. "Miracle of Fasting" by Paul Bragg N.D., Ph.D.
4. "The Master Cleanser" by Stanley Burroughs
5. "Dr. Christopher's Three-Day Cleansing Program" by Dr. Christopher.
6. "Mad Cowboy" by Howard F. Lyman.
7. "You can Heal Your Life" by Louise Hay.
8. "The Complete System of Self-Healing" by Dr. Stephen T. Chang.
9. "Fit for Life" series by Harvey Diamond.
10. "The Politics of Cancer" and "TPofC Revisited" by Samuel Epstein.
11. "The Serpent on the Staff" by Walinsky & Brune.
12. "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson.

Books by well known authors Andrew Weil and Deepok Chopra also provide an excellent overview of Natural Healing methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-documented and scary
This book was easy to read and it was scary about how much the American Medical Association influenced or even dictated medical practice in this country. You'd like to think that the best therapies are what we practice, but it's really the best therapies that large corps can control and profit from. I recommend it for anyone wanting proof of how little choice we have in medical care.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST READ!
This is a fascinating look into the politics of medicine and how the AMA became the monopoly it is today. Harry Hoxsey, a high-profile healer was having great success curing cancer. That was enough to trigger an all-out war against him by the American Medical Association. The problem the AMA had in convicting him of "quackery" though, was that his cured patients refused to testify against him. This book reads like a novel and is hard to put down. You will not look at medicine in the same way again.
And you may learn to beware of those who would cry "quack". Follow the money...

There is also a documentary film based on this book with the same name.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Medical Doctors should practice Evidence Based Medicine
Warning, when you read this book you might be scared away from “conventional medicine”! If you are suffering of cancer or have a relative that is terminally ill and has been given up by doctors, I recommend this book as a “second opinion”.

This book tells the story of how an alternative treatment was sabotaged by the medical community and by organizations that are supposed to protect our health (such as the Food and Drug Administration). As a European, I have been quite skeptical about this agency for some time, and this book doesn’t help at all! The picture this book gives you is that the main reason a drug gets accepted or not might be linked to serious lobbying inside the conventional medical community and to the financial gains that are linked to it. This isn’t hard to believe if you see how the tobacco lobby succeeded for years to cover up the problems smoking causes.

Yet, there is hope as far "conventional medicine" is concerned. Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) teaches doctors that they should stay current with recent research on drugs and learn how to interpret studies before administering drugs to their patients. I studied this subject in preparation of my Ph.D. I believe that EBM practices do drastically enhance our chances as patients to get the right treatment, especially if you read that 50% of doctors risk giving you a wrong or outdated treatment. No wonder many doctors admit that many patients get better DESPITE their doctor’s treatment.

The problem with EBM is that apparently some often used treatments such as many current forms of chemotherapy lack the statistical data to back them up, and that doctors seem to treat patients with those cures because they don’t have anything better. When I was doing my own research concerning whiplash, I was faced with a similar dilemma: conventional treatment in which patients have to wear a cervical collar may actually worsen the condition of patients. Yet 50% of MD’s still prescribe it today. On the other hand, if you would recommend a patient to throw away this collar, you might be pursued form “medical malpractice”.

On the other hand, I have known for years that the problem of many alternative cures (whether they are herbal remedies or psychological assistance) lies in the fact that they have not been proven scientifically. But, not being proven doesn't mean that the cure isn't valid, it only lets you know there is no way to tell. Therefore I keep trying to convince “alternative therapists” to do the necessary “homework” with regards to proving their protocols. The drama is that it doesn’t pay to do the scientific research for those cures, whereas there are billions to be gained from doing research for registered drugs.

Given that the death rate of cancer today isn't much better than in the 1950s, it's no wonder that today over 60% of cancer patients supplement their conventional treatment with one or more forms of alternative treatment. Reading this book should at least help you to be a bit more skeptical to what your doctor is telling you, and to be more willing to inquire for yourself what therapy will help to cure you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Anticipating reading this book...
I haven't read this book yet but I plan to do so because I remember accompanying my mother to the Clinic in Tijuana when I was l3 years old. She was having problems with fibroid tumors. They gave her six months' worth of medicine and told her to come back after that time. She never did..she said she hated the taste of the medicine and her doctor told her the tumors would shrink of their own accord after menopause anyway, so she chose to live with the pain. However, she knows someone who is still alive and in her 70's now because of completing the herbal course they gave her. It cured her cancer. I'm looking forward to reading this book to fill in the gaps in my memory and to learn more about the clinic and the man behind them. (Since I haven't read the book yet I can't give it any stars, so my three-star designation isn't valid.) ... Read more
