Book Description

One third of human cancers have a hormonal basis. Breast cancer, the most common cancer of women, is increasing in many countries, as is prostate cancer, the second most common cancer of men.Concurrently, molecular biology has refined the definition of hormones to include the interaction between tumor cells and both locally and distantly secreted factors. This volume in the series Cancer: Clinical Science in Practice considers aspects of hormonal cancer, including the molecular basis for the autocrine and paracrine regulation of cancer, molecular strategies for cancer detection, strategies in limiting the epidemic of hormonally related cancers, and new treatment approaches. ... Book Description

Three of every four children and adolescents with cancer can now be cured. However, physicians are using increasingly intensive treatment regimens. These treatments can expose patients to toxic chemotherapeutic agents, invasive surgical procedures, and radiation oncology interventions that risk disfigurement, neuropsychiatric damage, and life-threatening organ toxicity. These potentially dire consequences have mandated that advances in cancer treatment go hand in hand with supportive care measures that sustain patients through their therapeutic ordeal and allow each patient to achieve maximum quality of life. In this book, now in its third edition, the discipline of supportive care in pediatric oncology is covered in depth.

Supportive Care of Children with Cancer is a ready-reference handbook designed for use at the hospital bedside, in the oncology outpatient clinic, or in the physician's office. To create this book, leading experts in the field recommended approaches to supportive care which were then critically reviewed by members of the Children's Oncology Group, the world's largest cooperative study group for children's cancer. For students, house officers, fellows, pediatric oncologists, surgeons, nurses, nutritionists, social workers, and psychologists, this book provides essential information about the care of pediatric oncology patients.

The third edition features a new chapter on recognition, prevention, and remediation of burnout in pediatric oncology staffmembers, while throughout the book, chapters have been revised and updated to reflect the impact of new antibiotic agents, new antiemetics, and new approaches to pain management. ... Book Description

The first edition of this book was highly acclaimed and became the definitive text in the area. Its successor has been substantially enlarged, revised and improved. New chapters cover the provision and economics of palliative care, measurement of pain and other symptoms, principles of drug use, interventional radiology, asthenia, pruritus and sweating, pediatric palliative care, AIDS in children, and multiprofessional education. A number of chapters have been completely or substantially re-written. Over 100 European and North American experts contribute to this edition, many for the first time.

The Textbook's wide-ranging approach details every aspect of palliative care--physical, emotional, social and spiritual--in both research and practice. Sections examine the scientific principles underlying the subject, and offer a thorough review of the current status of research in the field. Besides emphasizing the emotional and psychological needs of the dying, the book considers the suffering of the family and discusses bereavement, support, the involvement of relatives, and the issue of domiciliary care. Other chapters cover the ethical aspects of care, rehabilitation, and the education and training of health professionals. Although based on practice in the developed world, the growing relevance of palliative care in the developing world is stressed throughout. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine 3e
It's here. What we've all been waiting for. The third edition of the OTPM. And it does not disappoint.

This edition looks to be largely re-written, not just up-dated, and there are many new contributors. There is a new section on the palliation of non-malignant disease, which I think will be particularly useful for the majority of us who deal primarily with advanced cancer. New chapters deal with the role of each of the allied health professionals who make up the multidisciplinary team. There are also new chapters on the principles of evidence-based medicine and on learning communication skills, both of which I think are particularly welcome.

It is not possible to review each section of what is a very large textbook. Overall, it provides good coverage of the whole field of palliative medicine. Duplication, as may occur in any multi-authored text, has been kept to a minimum. Although it has about the same number of pages, the use of a smaller (but very legible) font gives the impression that this edition is considerably larger and has a lot more information than the previous one. I have to declare that I wrote the chapter on HIV/AIDS in Adults, about which nothing more will be said, but had nothing else to do with the production of this book.

Is it up to date? I browsed a few areas where practice has changed in the last few years and found good coverage for selective COX-2 inhibitors, NMDA receptor antagonists and interventional radiology, although the usefulness of low molecular weight heparins in palliative care has not been emphasized.

Is it worth it? The book is not cheap by anybody's standards. But the answer has to be yes because this book will remain the gold standard reference in palliative medicine for the next few years at least. The editors are to be congratulated on the successful completion of what is a very impressive reference. And all who work in palliative medicine owe a debt of gratitude to Derek Doyle, who has now pioneered this book through three editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book
This is probably the best book currently available for ovarian cancer patients and their families. Published in 2003, the information is relatively current. The publisher is de-emphasizing its "Patient-Centered Guides" series, so this book may not have a second edition.

The book contains some frustrating errors; e.g., some of the websites listed in the book are shown as having ".org" URLs instead of the correct ".com" URL.

The address listed on page 487 of this book for Steven Piver's "Myths and Facts about Ovarian Cancer" is out of date. This very useful book is available from: CMP Media, 30th Floor, 3 Park Avenue, NY, NY 10016 Attn: Kristin Kazanowski. Ph: 212-600-3192.

I would recommend buying both books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and Current
I picked this book up from the library and am on Amazon to buy my own copy. My husband's mom was diagnosed 3 weeks ago and it has given us a better understanding of her situation and how we can help. Everything from ascites to FMLA to wills is covered. The quotes from patients are particularly helpful to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for All OV CA Patients
This is a must-have guide for women with ovarian cancer and their caregivers, among others. I bought one for my doctor's office because I feel more women undergoing care for ovarian cancer could benefit from reading this book. I wish I had heard about the book sooner -- ideally as soon as I was diagnosed with OV CA or before -- when it was first suspected. The guide is full of up to the minute tips for taking as much control as possible in your health care decisions. Though I am a nurse, there was much to learn from this book and the material is presented in a very user friendly manner. As ovarian cancer is a chronic disease, it is never too late to get this book and learn the latest on treatment and support -- from initial diagnosis, through surgery, initial chemotherapy, handling the anxiety ridden periods of remission, and through the dreaded recurrences and treatments that the majority of ovarian cancer patients will encounter.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BY FAR
This book told me more in plain, understandable English than I've seen in several books combined. Good definitions, understandable research data and first person accounts all make the vital information interesting and clear. I thought I knew a fair amount about ovarian cancer, but I keep referring to it because it has so much more information and is so up-to-date. It should be read by ALL WOMEN - not just ovarian cancer patients/survivors. Excellent for caregivers, too.

I just recently finished reading Kristine Conner and Lauren Langford's book, Ovarian Cancer...Your Guide to Taking Control and I have to say it is the BEST book that I have ever read on ovarian cancer. I especially liked it because it was written by women with ovarian cancer. It includes statements and facts from doctors, but it also contains the medical histories and thoughts from many women that have experienced ovarian cancer first hand. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with ovarian cancer, whether they are newly diagnosed, in remission or somewhere in between. It would also be good reading for loved ones of women with ovarian cancer. Finally, a book on ovarian cancer from the patient's point of view. We haven't had many of those since Gilda Radner's book.
Thank you for publishing a factual guide for women with ovarian cancer. I highly recommend this book and I can't say enough good things about it. ... Read more

Book Description

This volume describes the many ways in which mental health professionals have contributed to improving the lot of the cancer patient. A large section of the book is devoted to the psychological, social and behavioral factors that contribute to cancer risk and survival. Changing habits and behavior--reducing smoking, increasing certain foods intake, and decreasing sun exposure, for instance--is a significant factor in cancer risk, and becomes the focus of several chapters. Social class and socioeconomic issues are analyzed as far as they affect cancer risk and survival. Two chapters explore the brain-endocrine-immune connections and how they contribute to cancer prevention.

Other sections describe new psychological issues brought about by recent advances in cancer research. Sections of the book cover the "worried well" population--healthy people who are or who believe themselves to be predisposed to cancer. Chapters discuss tracing these people's family history, genetic testing, appropriate screening behaviors and counseling. A major section of the book deals with psychosocial interventions to improve patients' quality of life using psychological, psychoeducational, and behavioral methods. The book covers the use of psychopharmacological drugs, group therapies, nontraditional therapies (art, meditation, alternative medicine), and religious collaboration in helping ease the ordeal. Authors argue the ethical aspects of cancer care, including the ethics of clinical trials, informed consent, physician-assisted suicide, and palliative care. The specifics of caring for children with cancer, and for patients with special needs--such as the elderly and minorities--are accorded special attention. ... Read more

Book Description

30 years after its discovery as an antitumor agent, cisplatin represents today one of the most successful drugs in chemotherapy. This book is intended to reminisce this event, to take inventory, and to point out new lines of development in this field. Divided in 6 sections and 22 chapters, the book provides an up-to-date account on topics such as
- the chemistry and biochemistry of cisplatin,
- the clinical status of Pt anticancer drugs,
- the impact of cisplatin on inorganic and coordination chemistry,
- new developments in drug design, testing and delivery.
It also includes a chapter describing the historical development of the discovery of cisplatin. The ultimate question - How does cisplatin kill a cell? - is yet to be answered, but there are now new links suggesting how Pt binding to DNA may trigger a cascade of cellular reactions that eventually result in apoptosis. p53 and a series of damage recognition proteins of the HMG-domain family appear to be involved. The book addresses the problem of mutagenicity of Pt drugs and raises the question of the possible relevance of the minor DNA adducts, e.g. of interstrand cross-links, and the possible use of trans-(NH3)2Pt(II)-modified oligonucleotides in antisense and antigene strategies. Our present understanding of reactions of cisplatin with DNA is based upon numerous model studies (from isolated model nucleobases to short DNA fragments) and application of a large body of spectroscopic and other physico-chemical techniques. Thanks to these efforts there is presently no other metal ion whose reactions with nucleic acids are better understood than Pt. In a series of chapters, basic studies on the interactions of Pt electrophiles with nucleobases, oligonucleotides, DNA, amino acids, peptides and proteins are reported, which use, among others, sophisticated NMR techniques or X-ray crystallography, to get remarkable understanding of details on such reactions. Reactivity of cisplatin, once bound to DNA and formerly believed to be inert enough to stay, is an emerging phenomenon. It has (not yet) widely been studied but is potentially extremely important. Medicinal bioinorganic chemistry - the role of metal compounds in medicine - has received an enormous boost from cisplatin, and so has bioinorganic chemistry as a whole. There is hardly a better example than cisplatin to demonstrate what bioinorganic chemistry is all about: The marriage between classic inorganic (coordination) chemistry and the other life sciences - medicine, pharmacy, biology, biochemistry. Cisplatin has left its mark also on areas that are generally considered largely inorganic. The subject of mixed-valance Pt compounds is an example: From the sleeping beauty it made its way to the headlines of scientific journals, thanks to a class of novel Pt antitumor agents, the so-called "platinum pyrimidine blues". In the aftermath diplatinum (III) compounds were recognized and studies in large numbers, and now an organometalic chemistry of these diplatinum (III) species is beginning to emerge. The final section of the book is concerned with new developments such as novel di- and trinuclear Pt(II) drugs with DNA binding properties different from those of cisplatin, with orally active Pt(IV) drugs which are presently in clinical studies, and with attempts to modify combinatorial chemistry in such a way that it may become applicable to fast screening of Pt antitumor drugs. The potential of including computational methods in solving questions of Pt-DNA interactions is critically dealt with in the concluding chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cisplatin and more
This technical publication is aimed at specialist biologists and chemists in the field of platinum cancer chemotherapy. At a price of 225 dollars (US) and the technical knowledge needed to understand the book, it is not recommended for readers who are just interested in increasing their general knowlegde of cancer and chemotherapy.

Each chapter of the book covers a specific area of platinum chemotherapy and each chapter is written by the WORLD EXPERT in that field.

The first chapters deal with the discovery and use of cisplatin, the first platinum drug. The next chapters deal with its DNA binding and toxic side effects.

The remaining chapters deal with reviewing the research that has followed over the last 30 years and describes in detail new complexes that are undergoing clinical trails, their DNA binding and their cytotoxicity and toxicity.

This is an excellent book that is perfect for scientists who are entering or are currently conducting research into platinum complexes as chemotherapeutic agents. Definitely worth the money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff
My wife and I found lots of great help in this book. Detailed enough for our academic minds. Honest enough to be helpful in a difficult time. And staightforward enough to be understandable. We showed it to our therapist who liked it enough to include it in her list of resources for others with lymphedema. We highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Help
I found this book very informative and comforting. It not only tells about lymphedema, about why it starts and what can be done about it, but the book has the stories of other women with lymphedema and shows what they are doing for their condition. It helped make me aware that I am not the only person to have had problems after I was treated for breast cancer. Since my therapy for lymphedema I have used this book to maintain my arm's shape. I think the book is a wonderful guide. It was a real relief for me to find this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Helps Person in Small Town
I have had lymphedema for several years. I live outside a very small town which does not have a person who knows how to treat lymphedema. I found this book on Amazon.com and it gave me information that helped find a therpist in another city.

I must travel nearly two hundred miles to reach my therapist, but with her help and with the information in this book, the swelling has gone down and my arm is almost back to normal. In another couple of weeks I should not need to see the therapist any longer. Because of the detailed information in this book, and because of the therapist's instructions I know how to bandage my arm, what kind of sleeve to wear on it, exercises I should and should not do, even what kind of breathing helps my arm not swell.

I don't know what I would have done if this book had not been available. I wish it had been written years ago when my swelling began. I recommend it very highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book aids with treatment
I found this book incredibly helpful. After two years of having my arm so swollen it would not fit into many of my clothes, I found this book. It showed what exercises to do, how to do self-massage, how to bandage, and where to get help. It is complete with pictures that illustrate each step. I think this book is essential for anyone who's had treatment for breast cancer.

1-0 out of 5 stars A disappointing rehash
This book might be helpful as a starting point for someone who knows nothing about lymphedema. It read like a tired retread of the information the American Cancer Society dispenses for free. Since I experience a direct correlation between protein intake and arm swelling, I was hoping the authors would go into far greater diet detail than their short chapter on nutritional supplements. Save your money -- there is nothing new here. ... Read more

Book Description

This book is a comprehensive text on the all-important psychosocial aspects of cancer in children. Edited by an experienced psycho-oncologist and an equally experienced pediatric oncologist, the book brings together an international group of contributors composed of pediatric oncologists and psychologists/psycho-oncologists. This unique balance of contributors gives the book a focus on the real-life practical aspects of children undergoing treatment for cancer.

The book will help health care professionals who look after children and adolescents with cancer, in dealing with the difficult and complex problems that face the child, his siblings and his parents. It deals with critical issues such as the neuropsychological impact of treatment, (including bone marrow transplantation), pain, quality of life in survivors, palliative care, talking to children and their families about death, and providing support to the dying.

An important part of the book provides  tools for evaluation and methods of psychological intervention. It is thus a very practical work for psycho-oncologists, pediatric oncologists, pediatricians, psychologists, nurses, social workers and art therapists dealing with the problems that children with cancer have to confront.

  • The only recent comprehensive book on the clinical approach to psychosocial problems of children with cancer
  • Includes evaluation tools and psychological intervention techniques
  • Contributions from both pediatric oncologi sts and psycho-oncologists,
