5-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition in Clinical Practice
A very thorough and thoughtful discussion of nutrition that is ideally suited to the needs of the primary care provider. The CLINICAL HIGHLIGHTS feature at the end of each chapter is especially useful, but the final section, PRINCIPLES OF DIETARY COUNSELING, is worth getting the book for all by itself. Knowing about healthful nutrition is the easy part - getting our patients to adopt healthful eating habits is what's difficult. This approach to the problem of behavioral change is the best I have seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review by a nutritionally-oriented physician
Dr. Katz has done both the medical community and patients a great service by writing Nutrition in Clinical Practice. This book offers the layperson a surprisingly readable, painstakingly detailed overview of the role nutrition plays in health and disease. Anyone interested in knowing why good diet is so important should read this book.

For the physician or nutritionist, this book is an essential tool for incorporating the latest research into your nutritional interventions. For students, Dr. Katz's work will be a highlight of their curriculum.

Book Description

From mortal illness to miraculous recovery, a doctor's moving account of his own experience as a patient

At forty-two, Geoffrey Kurland, a pediatric pulmonologist specializing in such deadly diseases as cystic fibrosis, was diagnosed with hairy cell leukemia, a rare cancer with a statistically low survival rate. A remarkably fit man in training for 100-mile "extreme" races whose job is equally high performance, he is forced to confront the challenge of his own mortality. He tries to cope by turning inward in a desperate search for ever-elusive answers. As the doctor becomes a patient and lives through the terror and pain that he had until then only observed at a remove in his young patients, he learns invaluable life lessons that will ultimately make him a better doctor.

This is Kurland's memoir of his diagnosis, treatment, and return to health and "normal" life-an unforgettable testament to the resilence of the human spirit.

5-0 out of 5 stars power of the human mind and spirit
Our family was inspired by the stamina and ability to reach for the stars that doctor Kurland demonstrated in his book. It was quite helpful in dealing with our own personal fight against a difficult illness. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone dealing with disease and irony. As a doctor he has an aura of magnetic strength and is highly regarded in his profession. We tip our hats off to you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasure, inspiration AND education.
Nonfiction with all the excitement of a novel. It reads easily, stays on track, holds the reader's interest and has to have wide appeal. How a physician barely survives a frightening disease and manages to achieve some lifelong dreams in the face of extreme adversity. It offers special insight to all of us as potential patients or medical providers, with some special appeal to runners and endurance athletes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
Wonderful book with a lot of insight on the doctor being the patient. Despite the seriousness of the subject (diagnosis and treatment of lymphoma), it is sprinkled with humorous anecdotes about medical sub-specialists and medical training. Gives insight into physician thinking and training that should prove enlightening to non-physicians. A well-written, wise book by a great doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars moving and fascinating perspective on being a patient
This book is a refreshingly candid, funny, and moving account of one physician's experiences as a patient with a serious and often fatal illness. I found it difficult to put down, extremely well written, and accessible to both lay public and medical professional. Dr. Kurland's account is an important addition to the genre addressing the patient experience. It is must reading for anyone involved in patient care... and anyone who might be a patient... ... Book Description

Myelodysplastic syndromes are to the bone marrow what pneumonia is to the lungs; the response of an organ to a variety of etiologic insults like aging, toxic exposure, infections and auto-immunity. Among infectious causes alone, pneumonia could be the result of a variety of possible pathogens including bacterial, viral, tuberculous or fungal agents. Similarly, MDS cannot be treated as a single disease. Attempts to harness the inherent complexity of MDS by devising `classifications' which group the various syndromes as one disease is as misguided as saying that a pneumonia is not infectious because it did not respond to antibiotics. Progress in the field will occur faster when we re-analyze this premise. Therefore, until a clearer picture of the disease emerges it is best to treat each of the MDS syndromes as a separate entity. Having no classification is better than a misleading one.

Cancer research has been notable for its periodic cycles of promise and hope, followed by defeat and disappointments. It is not that there is no solution, but that the problem has not been identified precisely. This book is our attempt to define the most crucial questions related to MDS that need to be addressed immediately through logic, analysis and rigorous experimentation. If the emerging problems appear daunting, then instead of being overwhelmed by them, we should follow the advice of the great 20th century thinker Antonio Gramsci, `pessimism of the intellect must be faced with the optimism of will'. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars My review of this book
Okay...Everybody these dayz be talkin' how the Washington Manual series is tha bobm. (I mean this book was already ranked at 910,000 on Amazon within like 2 weeks of release) Well, sorry to alert you of this, but they ain't tha bobm. It's just that people were so gaga about there last one: The Washington Manual Gastroenterology Subspecialty Consult. I mean my sister just threw a "Gastroenterology Subspecialty Consult"-themed party last week and all her friends went basically BUHLISTIC over it.

Now, the Washington Manual stuff is aight, but it's no Health Institute-level stuff and it certainly is nothing when put in the ring together with the Terrence Bros. Series which, if nothing else, are mad powerful consults and the ones I would use most often in my practice.

And, can someone answer me this, why are hematology and oncology talked about in the SAME BOOK??? Oncology's cool, but, sorry again, fols, hematology is basically going the way of alchemy. That's right. I said it. Hematology is a useless science and only could MAYBE come in handy if anyone ever had a disorder of the blood or associated organs.

Also, it seemed like this book was totally not saying near enough about dosing chemo (I mean, not that any med student or resident would dose chemo, obviously), but, still, yo, these protocolz are constantly changing anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice overview
Just got this book- I thought it was a very nice overview of hematology and oncology. It was one of the few that I could find that had "just enough" detail without going overboard with minutiae. A great book for a student or resident on service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done
This is a subspecialty consult book on hem/onc that I just received. It seems to have all of the basics for the primary physician, med student, rotating resident and even the basics for the fellows. You never know it might even have some of the minutiae that some attendings might forget. I think it was created for the rotating resident or med student and for this it really serves its purpose. Easy and concise. Although I have not read it completely, it does seem a tad sparse in some sections such as dosing chemo (not that the med student/resident would dose chemo), but these protocols are constantly changing anyway...but an idea of dose range might have been a bit helpful some readers. Overall it is an excellent review of hem/onc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical writing at its best. Incredible prose!
Admittedly most medical texts are not "page-turners". This is an exception. Using beautiful prose, Iseman has compiled an excellent piece on this disease of antiquity. It is a joy to read and should be in the library of every physician who concerns him or herself with tuberculosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bottling Excellence
Videophiles may recall a classic TV advertisement (for Prego spaghetti sauce) that featured the tag line, "It's in there!" From the basic tomato paste to the more exotic herbs and spices, the ad line went, if it contributes to a fine spaghetti sauce, "It's in there!" Reading Dr. Iseman's fine new book gives me the same feeling of a complete and satisfying product. A compendium in the very best sense of the word, the text details the history, diagnosis, epidemiology, and treatment of tuberculosis in 14 elegantly-written, easily-digested chapters. My guess is that the secret ingredient in this impressive work is Dr. Iseman's obvious respect both for the disease and for those historical figures who struggled, sometimes heroically, to understand and to overcome it. And, as for Excellence...it's in there.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive TB text
Those of us in the field of TB know Mike Iseman as one of the giants and this textbook provides an invaluable guide for the treatment of this spreading disease. He deftly mixes historical perspective with clinical wisdom to achieve that rare combination of an edifying text that is actually pleasant to read. I can honestly say that I found myself reading this book not just as a reference, but as a work of literature--a rare complement, indeed, in the world of medical writing. The writing is superb, the research is cutting edge, and the book is a must have for anyone who deals with TB. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't transcribe heme-onc without it
As with all of Stedman's word books, this is power-packed and indispensible. I transcribe for cancer clinics, among other clients, and the people at Stedman's do a great job in this specialty as with all of their word books. In addition to hundreds of pages of terms related to cancer and diseases of the blood, there is terrific cross-referencing, appendices with details on different staging and classification systems, names and addresses of many major cancer centers (alphabetized by state, excellent idea), chemo regimens alphabetized by diagnosis, etc.

You may also benefit from the good deal Amazon offers for pairing this with Stedmans' equally fine Radiology book, or, if you would prefer these on a CD, you will find a CD on this site that has the Oncology and Radiology books gathered onto one CD with images etc. I couldn't do my job without Stedman's. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Woman's Guide to Healing fro
Dr. Nan Lu, extensively trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), founded and developed The Breast Cancer Prevention Project. He is also a founding director of the Traditional Chinese Medicine World Foundation, Inc., and is involved in SHARE, a self-help organization for women with breast and ovarian cancer. He is also a Qigong master and martial arts champion.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Woman's Guide to Healing from Breast Cancer, Dr. Lu describes how ancient TCM techniques can help prevent, treat, and aid recovery from breast cancer. He emphasizes throughout the book that "TCM is dedicated to helping the individual treat the source and not the symptoms of his or her problem."
Dr. Lu presents lots of general information about TCM, natural laws, and Qi, repeating that "everything has a connection and everything has an effect on every other thing." He then applies those principles specifically to breast cancer. He says that "headaches, stomachaches, PMS, or menstrual irregularities. . .are not normal conditions for a healthy body." He regards them as symptoms that should be heeded, to prevent future difficulties.
TCM can be used in many simple ways. For example, doing a monthly breast exam is a source of stress for many women, because it focuses their thoughts on having breast cancer. Dr. Lu recommends "telling yourself instead, that wherever you touch, you are sending in healing energy to protect that location so that you will never have breast cancer." He includes many other ways to conserve, increase, and use the natural healing energy each human possesses.
The healing information is presented in a way that allows each woman to customize the techniques to fit her own needs. All the techniques are compatible with modern medicine and may be used in conjunction with other treatments.
Dr. Lu says that "many of the self-healing techniques I've talked about can help keep your organs working in harmony." Bodies that are in harmony and balanced do not suffer from physical problems, including cancer.
The Woman's Guide to Healing from Breast Cancer is a valuable reference for everyone, regardless of age, sex, or current physical condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get to the root cause of breast cancer
I had breast cancer on the same breast twice, in 1983 and again in 3/2001. I want to find the root cause as I do not want it to happen again. I find the book easy to read and understand. I will start the Wu Ming Meridian Therapy which seems easy to do. I will also start to take the healing food and herb listed in the book. Thank you Dr. Lu for helping me to heal. If I had a book like this in 1983, I probably would not have breast cancer again in March 2001. I have been recommending this book to other breast cancer survivers at my support group.

5-0 out of 5 stars INFORMATIVE BUT EASY TO UNDERSTAND
I STARTED GOING TO A TRADITIONAL CHINESE PRACTIONER IN MARCH 2000. SOME OF THE TERMS SHE USED DID NOT MEAN MUCH TO ME. SHE RECOMENDED A BOOK TO ME BUT IT WAS SOMETIME HARD TO READ AND UNDERSTAND. I WAS LOOKING FOR A TCM BOOK SPECIFIC FOR BREAST CANCER. I FOUND THIS BOOK AND VERY STRONGLY RECOMEND IT TO ANYONE THAT WANT TO INCORPARATE TCM IN THEIR TREATMENT. DR LU EXPLAIN THE WHOLE CONCEPT OF TCM IN LAYMAN'S TERM. NOW WHEN I GO IN FOR MY TCM SESSION, I UNDERSTAND MORE OF WHAT MY PRACTIONER IS TELLING ME. AN EXCELLENT BOOK.

5-0 out of 5 stars The information in this book is incredibly useful and helpfu
Wow! I real page turner. I learned so much information about my body, and now feel more empowered over my body's health. I think this book is a must read for bay area women since we have the highest rates of breast cancer nationaly. I really apprecailted the combination of male and female authors and eastern-western perspectives this book offered.
