5-0 out of 5 stars The best book EVER on Eye Health Care
I had a near-debilitating eye burn accident a month ago and I went through a series of opthamologists who couldn't answer a majority of my questions regarding the recovery of my eyesight. To complicate matters I had LASIK surgery that was affected by the burn accident and no-one could tell me anything. Until I read this book; this book provided me with holistic and scientific approach to treating and supplementing my treatment. From supplements to herbs, this book provided me a complete approach to the healing process. I am now near 90% visual acuity and because I can now read, I've began a lifelong process of eye health care that will help me in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars HOW VITAMINS CAN SAVE YOU FROM GOING BLIND
***************************************************************** BACKGROUND

I am a 32-year old chemistry Ph.D. student who this past fall was told that retinas in both eyes had detached.

I underwent surgery and got the "best possible" surgical result; however, this is not the same as what my vision had been before. At that point, I was told that since they didn't know why this (retinal detachment) happened that there was no guarantee that it wouldn't happen again.

I am extremely lucky that I stumbled upon Dr. Abel's book by accident in a local bookstore -- it has profoundly changed my life for the better. I am now at (...) to buy extra copies for friends and relatives.

ONE OF THE BEST HEALTH BOOKS EVER!

This is one of three of the most important health books I have run across in my life. (The other two are nutritionally-related -- "Entering the Zone" by Barry Sears,Ph.D., and "The Formula" by Gene & Joyce Daoust, and provide information on how to use diet to minimize illness and maximize longevity. These books well-complement this book and are of a similar holistic mindset.)

Dr. Abel, a U.S.-trained ophthalmologist (M.D.), has embraced the wisdom of non-Western medicine in his search to find ways to treat eye problems that Western medicine claims are "untreatable" and by so doing HAS FOUND SOLUTIONS TO MOST COMMON EYE PROBLEMS, WHICH HE HAS SHARED IN THIS BOOK.

Also typical of a non-Western approach, this book takes a holistic view -- showing that several other conditions can also accompany eye problems.

For example, before reading this book, I never recognized that arthritis and dry eyes commonly occur together (they are both collagen "diseases" which, in retrospect, makes a lot of sense) and that successfully treating one will also help lessen the severity of the other.

MOST EYE PROBLEMS ARE DUE TO INADEQUATE DIET & SO PREVENTABLE

The core message of this book is that most eye problems are the result of nutritional (specifically, vitamin/supplement) deficiencies.

ORGANIZATION OF THE BOOK

A general background on the eye if first given to provide a foundation to the layman, clearly explaining eye structure and basic function. (This background would probably be accessible to the average person who doesn't have a scientific background.)

Successive chapters build on this foundation as they each address one of the most common eye diseases, e.g. glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, dry eyes, etc. At the end of each chapter is given a summary of what vitamins you can take to prevent/halt the progression of that particular eye problem.

The vitamins/supplements recommended are mostly available in your local grocery store's vitamin aisle -- you don't have to make a special trip to someplace exotic. (Also, a lot are common enough that there are generic versions available, which makes this easier for people on a limited budget.)

HOW THIS BOOK WAS USEFUL TO ME (& HOW IT COULD BE USEFUL TO YOU TOO)

Although the final step leading to my retinas detaching was the mechanical tearing of the retina, this book made me realize that the precursor was the weakening of the collagen in both my blood vessels and in the eye structure itself and that these were to vitamin deficiencies. (This book calls retinopathy "scurvy of the retina".)

Some of the solutions recommended in the book for this, e.g. bilberry and vitamin C, are vitamins/supplements known to strengthen collagen and other tissues.

I have taken multivitamins everyday and so would not have initially guessed that I have had a vitamin deficiency. But, after comparing the amounts in the multivitamin to the amounts recommended, I see that I did have one. (Remember you use up a lot of vitamins when you are under stress! :-) )

THIS BOOK IS EMPOWERING!

After reading this book, I realize that I have the power to prevent my eye condition from worsening just by taking a few more vitamins and supplements a day. This is a very easy way to significantly improve the quality of your life.

I am extremely grateful to Dr. Abel for writing this book and giving me the ability to take back my life again.

ONE SMALL CRITICISM: WHY NOT A LARGE-PRINT EDITION?

My only possible complaint is that a book on eye problems needs to be available in a large-print edition so that the bulk of people who need this book might actually be able to read it themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives clear advice on how to avoid blindness
Dr. Abels book brings a wealth of information on how to prevent and sometimes reverse common eye problems like cataract, macular degeneration, glaucoma and others. Losing vision can be one of the most frightening of experiences. Few people realize that 13 million people lose their eyesight from macular degeneration, and their ophthalmologists tell them nothing can be done except laser surgery.

I have known Dr. Abel personally for over 10 years, and I have seen with my own eyes a young girl of 18 facing blindness who now can now drive, and another woman with glaucoma resistent to eye drops have her eye pressures go down to safe ranges. I know for a fact that Dr. Abel has flown to India to perform free eye surgery in remote villages, helped found the first eye banks in several third world countries, and is not afraid to get down on the floor to show young children how much fun it is to put in eye drops. That is the man. Dr. Abel is an encyclopedia of useful medical wisdom, and his book is a true reflection of his knowledge-based desire to prevent blindness no matter what.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have book for everyone concerned with good eyesight!
My Mother has macular degeneration. The doctor's told her there was nothing that could be done, she'd go blind eventually. Maybe those doctors need to read this book! In fact, everyone should read this book if they are concerned at all with their eyesight. The writing is concise and easy to understand. Dr. Abel explains diseases so anyone can understand and goes on to tell you what you can actually do about your health. He covers topics such as: Diabetes, Cataracts, Glaucoma, AMD and more. Get this book and read it BEFORE you see your doctor. Heck, get your doctor a copy too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the Market regarding Macular Degeneration.
Here's a book with real substance written by a doctor who has M.D.There are too many books on the marketthat appear to be written by doctors who are looking over someones shoulderin an attempt to write authoritively onthe subject. I was very impressed by the dept of knowledge of this doctor who writes with true in depth investigative knowledge, he truly understands because he has the problem.A lot of good advice regarding diet which is of major importance, and life style, (Smoking), etc.Careful reading will show at least how to stop the progression and he also tells what kind of research is being done to find , if not a cure, at leastpossible major help.I'll buy anything this guy writes !

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book yet!
This book on macular degeneration is by far the best one published to date. There are numerous other publications available by other doctors that don't come close to the quality and depth of information contained in this book. I even gave a copy to my eye doctor who was not aware of it's availability.I must add that this doctor really speaks from personal experience with Macular Degeneration and it shows in the quality and quantity of great information.I thank God for this mans bookand highly recommend it to anyone who has MD or a friend or relative with the problem.Sincere thanks,Lee CarlsonSpring Hill, Fl

5-0 out of 5 stars Best resource on Macular Degeneration
I have a parent with macular degeneration and this book gave my father and our family new hope and inspiration. Particularly compelling was the fact that the author himself suffers from this affliction. The information provided was extremely useful and written in an informal, personal and non-technical manner. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has or knows someone with macular degeneration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ophthalmologist - Vitreoretinal Specialist
Dr. Solomon has written a wonderfully insightful account to aid patients and families cope with macular degeneration. He writes from the unique perspective of being an ophthalmologist who suddenly realized that he was now a patient with macular degeneration. The text is much more than an account of his experience. It is an in-depth review to help patients and families understand macular degeneration, the natural course of the disease, current theories for treatment and prevention, including careful consideration of the role of vitamins and nutrition. Overcoming Macular Degeneration addresses spoken and unspoken patient fears and concerns. There is thorough review of options and attitudes for dealing with visual impairments to enable patients to increase their visual ability and achieve a renewed lifestyle. Overcoming Macular Degeneration is a welcome addition to the support system for those dealing with macular degeneration. I will frequently recommend this book to my patients and their families. G. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book to Date on Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD)are hungry for information about this eye condition, which is the leading cause of legal blindness in people over age 60. This volume is a wonderful reference book for anyone dealing with AMD. Dr. Mogk not only provides valid medical information, but also dispenses useful tips for day-to-day living. The chapter on low vision aids is particularly helpful. She and her co-author write in an engaging, warm and personal manner. Her own experience with AMD in her father lends a note of credibility. She obviously cares for her patients and is anxious to give people the knowledge they need to deal with this devastating eye disease. I recommend it highly to anyone who has macular degeneration or is helping a family member or friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone interested in macular degeneration!
Anyone who has recently been diagnosed with macular degeneration, or who has a family member or friend with MD, will treasure this book by the Mogks. It was one of the first books on the subject I read after my doctor told me I had early dry MD in one eye. I was terribly upset to be suddenly faced with a future totally different from what I'd expected. When I picked up the Mogk book, my attention ws immediately riveted by Dr. Mogk's description of her father's happiness and independence despite late-stage MD. This was what I needed to hear: that people could be happy and retain independence in the face of low vision. That very positive beginning is an excellent way to pull the reader into what for most people is an unfamiliar medical problem.

As I read further, my first impression of "Macular Degeneration" as an invaluable resource for those who have the disease was reinforced. The Mogks approach the subject of MD from a problem-solving perspective as well as from a professional point of view and from Dr. Mogk's father's experience. The book is very well organized, and the appendices are chock full of good resources for readers to pursue.

Dr. Mogk also discusses ongoing research, letting readers know there is a keen interest within the medical-scientific community in macular degeneration and other retinal diseases. As I read of the various efforts afoot, I felt a sense of hope that before too long there will be effective treatment for this devastating disease that affects one-third of those over 75 and also younger people.

The message I came away with after finishing the book is that there IS life after MD, and it can be a good one. I enthusiastically recommend this book to everyone who has MD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our support group loved this book!
I am the facilitator for a support group for persons with Macular Degeneration. I have read the entire book to the group. It brought many comments from our members, as most could relate to the experiences written about. Our group enjoyed it so much, they have begged me to purchase another book to read. Mogk's book covered so many issues that persons with AMD care about: symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and coping emotionally. We recommend it everyone with the disorder, and their family and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book brought back my courage
This book is absolutely great, without evoking false hopes it provides all the information and support people with ARMD so badly need and usually don't get from their doctors. After 4 years (I got ARMD in 1996) I finally know what has happened in my eye and how I can help my system to fight the disease, what the risks are, and what research is going on. I feel so much better both psychically and physically since I've read the book; the diet is easy to follow (and not at all expensive, everybody can afford it), tips and recommendations are extremely helpful. I've lost my panic to become dependent on other people, I feel I'll be able to help myself and be active in many respects, for a long time to come. And this feels so good. Thank you Dr. Mogk! (Hopefully, the book will soon be translated into German).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Guide Saved My Father's Life
This is a beautiful book and I think it saved my father's life. Not only that, but he could read it with vision loss. The print is bold and well spaced, so with his 20/80 eyesight he could read it. We both read it because we got relatively little help from his doctor and there was so much good information -- the first really clear explanation of macular degeneration that I've seen, recipes and a prevention plan for me, a whole rehabilitation program for my father, and a whole section on emotional coping. This book is so well written that it is really one of the most touching books I've read -- very practical but very moving. I want to thank the authors from the bottom of my heart -- I think they have really helped my father to keep his spirit and extent his life. Everyone should read this book. It's a mistake not to. ... But, you will still require a textbook in order to write the answers to difficult theory questions. I STRONGLY recommend this book as the BEST PRIMER to your approach to Opthalmology as it is quick reading, helps you become familiar and understand the meanings of all the words used in opthalmology(and good glossary, too), has a very systematic/organized approach, and the information just sinks in. After breezing through this book(3 days), you can run through your Opthalmology textbooks much, much faster.

5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Visual Neurophysiology
This is 2 Volume 2000pg Tome on Vision. It's comprehensive and covers most of the topics. It is a reference work so you can look up the chapter on MST, V1, MT, Ganglion cell recordings, Illusions, you name it. It will go into pretty good depth on most things. If you're in Vision Research, it is not enough, you will need more specialized books and journals. The format kind of reminds me of the journal format for Nature Reviews Neuroscience. You better believe I am going to keep it in my library. Once reading, it can overwhelm you, so write down a list of 2 topics to look up each time you set-up to read it. This will easily be a standard reference for 7-10 years. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Bible" for Ophthalmic Technical Personnel
I have been in the eye care profession for nineteen years. Over the years I have read and collected many professional books to continue my education, and expand my knowledge of the eye and it's function, . I refer to "The Ophthalmic Assistant" far more than any of the others books in my library. I use this book to prepare for lecture presentations, as well as hands on teaching and workshops for staff and students. It is the primary book I used to study for my C.O.A. and C.O.T.
