5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This book is considered the "Bible" for vitreo-retinal specialists, as this book gives a comprehensive and conscise insight to diseases, treatment and opinions in the subspecialty. I highly recommend this book to any general ophthalmologist who has a keen interest in the vitreo-retinal subspecialty, and to those who are planning to take post-residency fellowships in this subspecialty.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for a resident
I just graduated from medical school and trying to become an Ophthalmologist. Since I am not an English speaking person, it is difficult to get informations in English. However, each sections and chapters of this book is well organized and helps me to get accustomed to the medical terms in Ophthalmology. This book is easier to understand than the text books written in Japanese (I am a Japanese). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes sense
This book gives a broad overview of this extremely common and debilitating eye disease. The co-authors, a leading ophthalmologist and a patient with macular degeneration, present the information from both the technical point of view and the laymen's point of view. The book covers many aspects of macular degeneration, including its definition, types, diagnosis, treatments, and coping methods. The treatments section includes a comparison of alternative therapies as well as standard medical treatments. There are also chapters on possible causes of macular degeneration and potential ways to lower the risk of developing the disease. The book includes a glossary and a list of resources for further information or help. If you or someone you know is diagnosed with macular degeneration, this book will be invaluable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Patient Education
I'm extremely impressed by this book. All patient education should strive to be this clear, readable, respectful, and comprehensive. It is written with understanding of and sympathy for the experience of coping with a potentially life-changing condition -- and by that I don't mean simply that the tone is warm and encouraging (although it is), but that the book is full of practical information that answers the kinds of questions that patients are likely to ask.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you've recently been diagnosed with ARMD, read this book!
A few years ago my wife had a blood vessel in her retina burst causing permanent partial vision loss in one eye. (She complained of "wavy vision" the day before she was to go to Europe on vacation - she cancelled the trip.) Since then we have had an Amsler grid on our refrigerator door, and she has learned to cope with the 'missing spot' in her field of vision.... Two weeks ago she noticed - while watching the Bloomberg channel - that she could not read a good bit of what was on the screen. This time the doctor found another leakage into the retina (not involving red blood cells); her vision returned to what it was before in a few days. The doctor 'put dye into her' to 'check her eyes out.' - BUT this time the doctor told her that she has early dry ARMD. ----- I realized that we didn't understand very much of what we were being told ... so I bought this book and spent the last two days reading it cover to cover... This is really an EXCELLENT summary. I wish we had had it before my wife's latest problem, because I would have been able to ask more intelligent questions. We will on the next checkup! This deceptively small book holds more information than I thought could be packed into a 170-page volume in large type. Dr. Robert D'Amato's explanations are not only complete, but also clear. (I finished reading it before I noticed that the Macular Degeneration Foundation has endorsed it!). I have a bent for details and proofs, for the exact pro's and con's of different 'treatments.' I learned that my wife's emotional reaction to her diagnosis (she was initially convinced that she 'was going blind') was only partially justified. Dr. D'Amato shows that this outcome is highly improbable; most people show a gradual loss, if any at all, over a period of years. I learned, however, that it is essential to keep an eye on (unintended humor there) dry ARMD so that progression into wet ARMD can be detected, and then treated. He details both current and prospective treatments for wet ARMD. ---- "Macular Degeneration" contains a very helpful glossary, and the book is filled with specific sources - so one can pursue additional research on this affliction! ----- I was NOT particularly impressed by Joan Snyder's contribution to this volume, despite the fact that she is obviously sincere. 'Alternative medicine' seems to be all the rage now, but I think it lacks the rigor of true science. Mrs. Snyder's very complete listing of alternative approaches seemed to me merely a catalog of 'ways to kid yourself.' [I was waiting for her to suggest prayer, pilgrimages, or divine healing -- which she never did, thank goodness!] Dr. D'Amato's kind words about his co-author did not hide his skepticism about her sympathy for 'alternative medicine'. He is a more patient man than I am! Since the 'alternative medicine' section occupied a relatively small part of the volume (the preface and Chapter 8) I don't feel that Mrs. Synder's contribution significantly detracted from the book's worth -in fact, for those like me who are hard-headed empiricists, the descriptions of 'alternative approaches' told me: don't waste time on this approach! ---- Hats off to the publisher: Note that the typeface is quite large which opens this valuable work to those who need it the most -- ARMD sufferers with significant vision loss! I strongly feel everyone recently diagnosed with ARMD should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Focuses on understanding of this sight-robbing condition
The condition described here is age-related but has grown significantly in recent years as the population ages: Macular Degeneration provides an analysis of the disease, its progression and its symptoms. From the latest medical treatments to options for alternatives, Macular Degeneration focuses on understanding all aspects of the sight-robbing condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars First book that answered my questions!
I have been trying to find info on new treatments for macular degeneration. What is the difference between photodynamic therapy (PDT/Visudyne) versus transpupillary thermotherapy? This book covered all the latest treaments, even ones in experimental stages. Amazingly, the book is also comprehensive in its discussion of diet and alternative therapies. As well, it explained all the nuts and bolts of the disease process. I found it exciting to read and quite inspiring. It is a "must read" if you have macular degeneration. ... Read more

As a reference book, this little handbook falls short.

As alearning tool it is also lacking, with little detail or helpfuldiagrams.

However, as a study tool, this review should serve the student well if he/she had a real reference from which to learn. That is, in fact, what it markets itself to be -- a last minute study review -- so no false advertising here.

The magnificent work of the author has helped us to start working with low vision patients at a small low vision clinic that has been recently created. It's an interesting book that is practical, and also fully developed for the Ophthalmologyst or Optometrist that work with the low vision patients. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is cool, but there is better
This book is incredibly cool. It has 15 ViewMaster reels with it that give you an up-close look at some things that can go wrong with your eyes. In fact the problem with this book it that it is too close -- and all the VM photos look more or less the same.

However, Volume II -- "Orbit, lacrimal apparatus, eyelids, and conjunctiva" by David D. Donaldson is much better. Stomach-churning pictures of the grossest eye problems you've ever seen -- all in glorious ViewMaster 3-D.

Both of these books are must-haves, but after Donaldson's masterpiece, Gass' is a little bit of a let-down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the BEST
Gass provides the "gold standard" for textbooks regarding macular maladies. I have read many other texts purporting to review macular disease but none do so to the extent Gass does. Each sentence is jam-packed with information and the references are extensive and complete. The text is a must for any serious student of macular disease. One drawbrack is the black & white photos but I recognize the prohibitive costs of printing the text with color prints. I recall reading the beginning part of the chapter on choroidal neovascularization as a resident and marveling at how Gass explained the pathophysiology with simple yet telling diagrams. This book rates a solid 6 stars (on the five star scale!). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural way to better eye sight
I have been using Meir's techniques for 3 years.
The first month my eyes went from 20/200 to 20/100(Left)
20/70 to 20/30(Right) and after the second month 20/70 and 20/20
Soon after it was 20/50 and 20/15 I exercise them 2 to 3 times a week now (3 yrs later) to maintain the vision. (Initially I exercised them daily, including yoga techniques)
No more glasses for Myopia and NO reading glasses (I am 45)

2-0 out of 5 stars Too bad there isn't a hard copy
I wouldn't go so far as to say this is a farce, the man used to be blind for goodness sake! I think I would be more inclined to use it if it was in written form. Trying to find your way through the audio cassettes is difficult because you don't know what section he's talking about if you stop or roam the cassette. I kept wanting to skip certain parts but then got lost not knowing how far forward or back I should go. I just got discouraged. There is a decent length meditation/hypnosis type segment that didn't appeal to me, but maybe to others. He really stresses relaxing the eye instead of straining them on a daily basis which I think is such valuable information and really makes a difference. Just make sure you consider the advantages/disadvantages of an audio tape before you buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars helpful exercises
Eyes work because of muscles. These exercises teach you to both strengthen and relax these muscles. I noticed improvement in my eyesight immediately, and it just got better. It may not work for everyone, but this technique helps me. I'm over 50 and don't wear glasses. I read books, computer screens, newspapers and the contract at my auto repair shop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Transcriptionist's ovation
It seems that Stedman's word books, generally, get a nearly unanimous standing ovation from transcriptionists, and a good head-scratching reply from those who are looking for more detailed information in addition to terminology, phrases, and spelling.

Well, that's appropriate. This ophthalmology word book, and all of the other similar word books Stedman's publishes, are specifically targeted to the niche market of MTs, medical authors, etc., who need specific information on the hundreds of thousands of terms used within the field. This particular book is valuable because it is so specialized, as terms of ophthalmology are rarely used in other areas. While many medical terms may apply to a number of specialties, that's just not the case here.

If not for this book, I would be completely lost, for example, in an ER trauma report that deals with an eye injury, and certainly would be lost when having to transcribe a blepharoplasty or even a routine cataract removal. Stedman's is a gold mine for anyone hoping to advance in the field of medical transcription.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Reference for Ophthalmology
The second edition of "Stedman's Ophthalmology Words" [January 2000] is a real gem for the medical transcriptionist needing a current reference in this specialty. It has 60,000 entries, cross-indexed, with >42,00 medical word entries relevant to ophthalmology, including the pertinent peripheral nerves, muscles, disorders and diseases.

Additionally, it has four helpful appendixes: 1) anatomical illustrations, 2) common terms by procedure, 3) drugs by indication [i.e., for entities such as "conjunctivitis" or "glaucoma", there is listed the Rx for these common problems] and, I believe most helpful, 4) thirteen common operative reports with many of the arcane terms used by eye surgeons.

Surgical instruments are listed freely in this tome: the word "forceps", for example, has four pages of various forceps found in ophthalmology.

This is a gold mine for the individual who needs a reference in this specialty. As a transcriptionist who occasionally transcribes ophthalmological reports, I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Reference Book
"Ophthalmology Words" by Stedman once again lives up to the Stedman tradition of excellence. With over 60,000 entries, it completely covers the gamut of ophthalmologic words, surgical and otherwise. In addition to being completely cross-referenced, it includes four helpful appendixes that include 1) several anatomic reference guides, 2) commonly used eye drug/medications, 3) a preparation/procedure reference, and, most helpful in my estimation, 4) 13 ophthalmologic reports--the latter are extremely helpful for he/she who writes up surgical reports.

This second edition, written in the year 2000, is as current as you can get.

As a transcriptionist who occasionally does ophthalmologic transcription, I find this reference tops. ... Read more
