Easy-to-use Clinical Retina features hundreds of photos, and free searchable CD-ROM

Ophthalmologists now can quickly diagnose both rare and common retinal disorders by turning to one user-friendly volume.

Clinical Retina, edited by David Quillen and Barbara Blodi, helps ophthalmologists easily confirm diagnosis by pairing more than 800 detailed color photographs with text, atlas, and differential diagnosis material written by leading and emerging retinal specialists.

Formatted with an easy-to-use layout, the most important information about each retinal condition is presented on two facing pages, with one side detailing the condition in a standard format and the other page featuring magnificent color photographs that illustrate its characteristic features. The guide covers the most important areas of retinal conditions including macular disease, retinal vascular diseases, inflammatory diseases, and hereditary retinal disorders.

Clinical Retina includes summaries of major clinical trials involving retinal disease and highlights the indications, techniques, and complications of treatments including laser and photodynamic therapy. To make the content even more functional, the guide comes with a fully searchable CD-ROM with the complete Clinical Retina text and images including a visual quiz for self-assessment.

With its intuitive format and one of the largest collections of high-quality retinal images, this single-volume summary is an exceptional value for any ophthalmologist or retina specialist. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for the medical student
As a medical student taking a retina elective, I wanted a book that would provide sufficient detail and color photographs at a reasonable price. This book fits the bill.

In terms of content, this book works perfectly for a beginner. The first chapter begins with the anatomy and physiology of the retina. The second covers ancillary testing from fluorescein angiography to OCT. The third chapter then provides the clinical features and differential diagnosis for a variety of retinal findings such as a cherry red spot. From there, the book continues as mentioned in the editorial review. I felt the first three chapters gave me a good foundation to understand the diseases presented later on. The writing is clear and concise throughout.

As for the photographs, there are hundreds of high-quality color photographs in this book. The entire text of the book with photographs can also be found on the CD-ROM. However, you cannot take the photographs from the CD-ROM for presentation purposes unless you have a full version of Adobe Acrobat as the entire thing is in pdf format. Being able to use the photographs for presentations would have been a plus as they are really superb.

I cannot compare this book to the Academy books since I am not a resident yet but it is certainly the best book I have seen available to me. I highly recommend it to any medical students or transitional year interns doing a retina elective. ... Read more

Book Description

Retinal dystrophies are the major causes of incurable blindness in the Western world. Our insight into their aetiology has improved remarkably over the past decade and a number of key genes have been identified. Together with a more detailed understanding of disease processes, this knowledge is stimulating new approaches to therapeutic strategies involving gene therapy, growth factors and retinal cell transplantation.

Molecular genetic studies have provided detailed information on the pathogenesis of retinal dystrophies. An important proof of principle that gene therapy holds great promise for the treatment of these conditions was demonstrated in the rds mouse: introduction of a functional copy of the peripherin gene subretinally resulted in complete rescue of rod outer segment structure. Novel approaches are being developed based on the manipulation of biochemical pathways that previously were not considered relevant to these diseases. For example, renewed interest in retinal dystrophy pathogenesis led to the successful use of high dose vitamin A treatment in Sorsby fundus dystrophy.

This important new book covers all aspects of retinal dystrophies from the molecular and developmental biology of these disorders to possible therapeutic approaches, with special reference to gene therapy. Specific chapters deal with the molecular genetics of gene therapies, clinical genetic studies, molecular and cellular mechanisms of the development of the disease, functional genomics of retinal diseases, animal models of retinal dystrophies, and finally with studies on gene therapeutic approaches to correcting the disorder. With contributions by many of the leading researchers worldwide, this book is likely to be an important milestone in this rapidly developing field. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for the eye doctor!
This is a great concise text that presents the ocular side effects of almost every drug that's on the market. I have yet to find a drug that is not in there. While there are constantly new drugs being formulated and released there may not always be what you are searching for in this book...but there will be that drug category which will give a good idea to the practitioner about what to expect. This book saves time and frustration for the Optometrist or Ophthalmologist in that we do not have to repeatedly look at the PDR and sift through the mounds of information presented in it. ... Book Description

This book begins with a promise: people with severe vision loss can be trained and equipped to function as sighted. The author, himself legally blind for 30 years, fulfills that promise with precise information and guidance on improving life through visual rehabilitation. The book explains fundamental facts about eyes and vision, including the causes and varieties of blindness, and then moves on to the new skills the partially sighted person must learn. Specific approaches and devices are covered in depth, including "eccentric viewing" and driving with telescopic glasses, and the visual and electronic aids that can help overcome the effects of vision loss. In spite of his own limited vision (20/240), Dr. Chapman uses a computer without a voice synthesizer, watches TV, and even drives, and he shows readers how to do the same. ... Read more
