A must read for the oral boards
This book is a real gem for any trainee in ophthalmology. I read it initially as a medical student, and then again for the oral boards. Without a doubt, this is the most concise book for the orals, and many of the questions that I was asked were well reviewed by the authors of this book. It made my orals a snap!

A solid, unique reference book.
This book is unique among the myriad of ophthalmology texts. It is in the form of question and answer. I find that retention of relevant information compliments this approach. Reading in this style is pleasurable. This is one book I do not regret purchasing.

A WASTE OF MONEY
This book is so general and sprawling it is useless. I went to the section on Presbyopia (Middle-Aged Eyes. It describes the condition (this I already know), says conventional medicine has no remedy other than glasses, says that "vision therapy has shown that people who perform simple focuing exercises experience a great benefit." But does he tell us what those exercises are? There is a general section on exercises. Are those the ones? Grossman's other book "Natural Eye Care: An Encyclopedia" is no better. Presbyopia does not even appear in the index! In "Greater Vision" Grossman takes up a lot of pages describing various Complementary Therapies, with a paragraph each on practices such as craniosacral therapy, the Alexander technique, yoga, meditation, etc. Okay, but I already know about these therapies, in fact have, at one time or another, partaken of all of the above. What I really need to know is which one is right for my condition? Grossman doesn't say. If you really want to improve your vision and read an altogether fascinating book (although with a terrible title), try Jacob Liberman's "Take Off Your Glasses and See." It is usefully informative, well-written, and full of some amazing insights about our culture and how our way of life contributes to vision problems.

Dr. Grossman points out the vitality of vision in ways that no other eye doctor does. He brings together a Western approach to optometry along with Chinese medicine and psychology in this book. Easy to read, it proved to be an integral tool in helping me to better understand the relationship between eyesight and vision. So your olfactory's off and your auditory's kaput? Help is on the way via this highly recommended book (wouldn't be surprised if it might also cure the 'mr. cranky' in you). No matter your handle or the locale you claim, it's beneficial from india to menninger and points beyond.

Lacking in some places
As far as content goes this manual is lacking in up to date therapies, and has a limited view on differential diagosis.Pictures are great, though, and in one small handy book. But, if you don't know what you're looking for it is very hard to find

Perhaps the best ophthalmology book ever
Kudos to the authors!

This well-organized, concise and practical book begins where the Wills Manual left off. Drawing from a vast library of clinical photographs, the book serves both as a clinical resource and an atlas. The reader is expertly guided through both diagnosis and management.

I was very impressed and would recommend this book to any ophthalmologist or health care professional interested in eye care.

Excellent Book by an Excellent Surgeon
This is an excellent book by one of the world's best LASIK surgeons. Dr. Machat is so skilled, that he is often called upon to repair the damage done by other less talented surgeons. Brent A. Hanson had 5 operations from another surgeon before he went to Dr. Machat! IMO, perhaps all the king's horses and all the king's men, could not put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

A patient's experience with Dr. Machat's surgical procedures
Dr. Machat has written a book which describes the proceduresfor performing lasik. However, the book fails to mention that hiscompany, TLC, is so overloaded with patient complaints, that thecompany is unable to respond to all of them.

I wish that the bookplaced a greater emphasis on the risk of having to have a corneatransplant after lasik surgery. I had to have a cornea transplantafter Dr. Machat performed lasik on me, and then dumped me as apatient...

A superb text
Although this is a textbook for professionals, it can be used by patients who are keenly interested in this topic. Machat is clearly a leader in his field, and this book can be rated "6 stars". I would consider this text to be the "Bible" of LASIK.

Good on surgical techniques --weak on pre-op. considerations
As a surgeon performing refractive procedures for over 15 years now, I was certainly impressed with the surgical techniques of Dr. Machat, which in fact borrow from much of my own research. He has certainly learned much, and I am impressed with his progress.

However, Dr. Machat has left a rather large gap in his coverage of pre-operative considerations, such as the need to check for scotopic pupil size, pre-existing dry eye conditions, and the presence of exphorias and extropias. He has also not discussed the increasingly higher risks of he Lasik procedure in high myopic corrections (6 diopters and above).

It's a shame that both surgeons and patients end up learning more about pre-operative considerations from bulletin boards such as surgicaleyes and eyeknowwhy than from medical treatises such as this.

I have been heavily involved in refractive surgery for 5 years and this is the best single source on laser surgery that I have come across.

It has excellent photographs and explanations; it covers the personal LASIK techniques of many surgeons rather exhaustivley.

C.O.A Review Manual is very helpful!!
I found the review manual very helpful in studying for my COA exam. It was precise, and provided me with knowledge of alot of things that I had not dealt with in clinic before. There is alot of "old-school" things in the book, but come in very handy because there is alot of things on the test that are based on technology from years ago. Had I not studied this book, I would have been lost in taking my exam.

The most detailed, complete, atlas w/photos of it,s kind!
Three months ago, I recieved an opportunity to have my retinal detachment repaired by the author of this book. Dr. William Feeman. The surgery was performed at the Shiley Eye Center here in La Jolla, Ca. I am now almost completely recovered. I have always been very afraid od doctor's, and even though Dr. Freeman is up front and frank, I would not have wanted anyone else to perform my surgery. His book explains it all!!
