Macular Degeneration Discussion Inadequate
Remarkably this book has only one chapter on macular degeneration. Other eye diseases are discussed in chapters that follow. Useful descriptions of macular degeneration research or ways to achieve living independence are lacking. Heavy emphasis is placed upon nutrition therapy. I found other books to be of more value in understanding the role of nutrition strategies in preserving sight and practical ways to follow them in daily living. This book alone will not fulfill most needs.

Provides concrete advice for those who have researched "fix-it" methods and found them wanting. Definitely for those who are interested in natural means to retard degeneration of remaining vision.

Offers a natural alternative to losing vision!
My eye doctor told me I suffered from macular degeneration and I would gradually lose a good deal of my eye sight. He said there is no treatment for the condition that he was aware of. This book offers a natural alternative to losing vision. The book is based on fairly substantial research. The book gives you a detailed program of proper food and nutritional supplements that have been successful in halting the progression of this problem and even reversing its degenerative eye-sight robbing effects. We are a highly visual species. Most of our information about the world comes to us through our eyes and most of our cultural and intellectual heritage is stored and transmitted as words and images to which our vision gives access and meaning. Knowing more about our eyes and vision is, therefore, one path to better understanding ourselves. And, as it happens, the human eye is a fairly representative vertebrate eye; knowing more about it tells us much about the eyes of other animals and about how they view the world and us.

In more practical terms, a better understanding of the human eye allows us to intervene more intelligently and purposefully as we attempt to correct, modify, or ameliorate disorders of the eye brought on by trauma, disease, or senescence.

Understanding the eye requires an exploration of the relationship between its structure and its function--that is, a consideration not only of how the eye and its parts are constructed, but also of what they do and how they work. Thus this book considers both the structure and the function of the human eye and how they are related, often using functional issues as a guide to the most meaningful and important features of the anatomy. Limited use of technical terms from the various disciplines that relate to the eye, definitions of terms as they are used, a glossary, and suggestions for additional reading are all included to make the text accessible to readers for whom the subject is new. Boxes interspersed throughout the text discuss methods used to study the structure of the eye and surgical procedures used to alter its structure in beneficial ways.

In addition to the main theme of structure and function, several subthemes make the general point, in different ways, that the eye and our understanding of it are dynamic and changing. This is an excellent book which covers comprehensively the structure and function of the human eye as its subtitle implies. The selection of subject matter is balanced, clearly presented and well illustrated. The book is sprinkled with interesting illustrated historical vignettes reminiscent of those in the classical Duke-Elder, which add, for me at least, valuable sparkle to the corresponding text. The book will be of great value to students studying the eye, professionals in the field, and perhaps equally to health professionals and students in other fields, or to any sophisticated reader looking for an up to date summary of the subject. There is an excellent expanded table of contents which can be browsed to get a quick overview of the text. Researchers will enjoy the book, but will not find specific references to the topic covered though there are comprehensive lists of sources for further reading. Don't let the Doctor's review fool you, it works
If you're looking for a book with eye EXERCISES that was written by someone with curiosity who EXPERIMENTED and STUDIED at the same time to improve their vision, with advice that may help you, you've found it. I used to be in eye therapy at the Alderwood Vision Clinic in WA, I know these exercises work and I know that without daily exercises... your vision will tend towards what you mainly look at. I was nearsighted, then eventually didn't need glasses thanks to the vision therapy, then I played video games for 3 years as well as computer games and gradually got worse.

The only exercise I miss from the book is "eccentric circles", I believe they have a version using squares. Looks kinda like
[ []] [[] ] and you have to make them look like one square or 3 squares by focusing in, then focusing away. (using a window helps).

I believe the internet lacks resources for vision therapy...

One more tip: Take your most nearsighted eye, and with your finger, pull the skin on the outer side back. It will make your vision blurrier, but focus it right and you'll get 20/20 vision or better temporarily. Took me some time... the theory behind it is that I have a muscle there that got used to focusing in, so I focused it out. There's also the factor of making the eye round again because muscle strain made it oval-shaped. Either way, it deals with your muscles... (also, think about what squinting does... relate it to the above).

Unfortunately you do have to work for better vision. Remember to rest your eyes every now and then. But, doctor$ do exi$t and if you'd like to give them your ca$h you can always believe their "expert" review$, which I'm sure are more ba$ed on your benefit than their profit. Be careful. And do what works for you.

This book is an excellent start, and much cheaper than eye therapy. I do believe it will correct your vision a noticeable amount within a year if you keep at it... might fix it totally within 2.

a physical approach
The author presents vision improvement in a way that likens relaxed use of the eyes to other forms of fitness that keep the body, or various aspects of it, working smoothly and efficiently. The material isn't strictly the Bates Method, but it's basically in line with it, with some things added that some Bates teachers may not agree with. The book goes over why glasses are not the solution, then it gets into specific exercises that are to help refractive errors.

Your eyes are important; it pays to keep them in shape!
Despite all the emphasis today on healthy lifestyles and physical fitness, I can't recall seeing any other recent book that has advocated applying those same principles to a person's eyes. As Ms. Roy points out in "Eyerobics", the eyes contain muscles that need a good workout, too, in order to stay strong and limber. Many years ago, as a teenager, I struggled with the fact that I was nearsighted and had no choice but to wear the heavy "nerdy-looking" glasses that were available back in the 50's. I was intrigued when I found a paperback book that described a variety of exercises that one could perform in order to improve vision. The book seemed to be based on sound principles, but unfortunately, it treated eye exercises as if they were the "calisthentics" that were so popular in those days: something boring and uncomfortable that was "good for you". The book sat on a shelf for years, filled with good ideas that never became a reality. I eventually learned of the newly-available contact lens, and was able to take advantage of this wonderful development to shed my glasses for a while. However, at some point the discomfort of contact with smoke and dust overcame my vanity, and I decided that a pair of lightweight, wire-rim glasses was really not so bad. Now, as I approach the big "50", I have found that I have a new challenge, one that we all face eventually: the tendency to have difficulty with close work when wearing my regular glasses. I have tried using the latest version of "bi-focals", and I find a lot of disadvantages. I believe that with a little work, I can improve my close vision so that the single-vision lenses will be sufficient. I may decide at some point to undergo laser vision correction for cosmetic reasons, but I know that the close-vision issue will remain unless I develop healthy, flexible eye muscles. I have found "Eyerobics" to be a source of inspiration and a kind of "owner's manual for the eyes". The exercises are designed to fit into today's busy schedules, and seem to be more like an interesting little games than like "calisthentics". Marilyn Roy has brought some important eye-care issues to the attention of the general public in a readable, down-to-earth book. Perhaps it should be made into a "Dummies" book, because it deserves to be just as popular.

Unfortunate
It is unfortunate that people with refractive errors will buy this book, which was written by an accountant, not any sort of health care practitioner. As an eye doctor, I see many types of ocular problems, and, yes, some of these can benefit from exercises. Roy's book misreads Bates's work, is ignorant of ocular anatomy and promises results that just cannot be delivered. Again, ther are some eye conditions that benefit from exercises, but many (most?) do not. See an accredited optometrist or ophthalmologist for help. Behavioral optometrists are especially aware of eye exercises regimens for improving vision. Most people are only to willing to part with their money for miracle cures, be they surgeries or exercises. Please take responsibility for your own health - find out the facts yourself. The author of the above book published and toured to support her book for one reason - cash. Don't let it be yours.

A Good Start For Eyesight inprovement
This book, while not a "cure," certainly helps one to improve and take control of one's own eyesight. I disagree with the Ohio reviewer in that this book is a good way in which to control ones vision. I know two individuals who have lowered their persecriptions since using this book. Definitive Vision for Psychologists and Neuroscientists.
Milner and Goodale provide one of the most comprehensive reviews of the neural processes underlying visual perception. Students will appreciate the detailed treatment of subjects such as concurrent processing, functional specialisation, and visual disorders. Perhaps the book lacks adequate treatment of colour disorders and recent neuro-imaging research. The distinction between accepted opinion in the subject and the authors' own theory of perception and action is sometimes blurred. Those already familiar with the human visual system will find Milner and Goodale's views stimulating and controversial. Overall, it is a valuable book in a topic that lacks a truly comprehensive textbook/review. For its content it is very favourably priced.

Excellent overview of tinnitus and available treatments
The feature of this book that makes it so helpful is the unbiased overview of the various available treatments. You may wince to hear your favorite home remedy analyzed in strictly scientific terms, but the knowledge can be as refreshing as a splash of cold water on your face. The variety of topics covered--medication, depression, masking, habituation, ginkgo, etc.--indicates that Dr. Vernon wanted this book to be a comprehensive guide to treatment, not just promote one clinic's speciality over another. As a tinnitus sufferer myself, this book was a indispensable tool in trying to understand what I was up against. Very Technical
This is a very encyclopedia-type of book. It has a lot of information about different eye problems and is a great book describing the functions of the different parts of the eye and what goes on at visits to the eye doctor. But it doesn't give alot of information on saving your sight, taking care of your eyes, remedies for problems or anything like that. The book claims to be "The Owner's Manual for your Eyes" but I don't think this to be very accurate. Its from 1998, but doesn't even include alot about laser surgery.

A Great Book
The Eye Book by Gary Cassel is extremely well-organized and easy to read. Anyone wanting to know how their amazing eyes work should read this book. It also conveys basic information about many eye diseases.

A good layman's guide for general eye information
The book is a good layman's guide to understanding the eye and the most common types of eye problems. However, the subtitle, A complete guide to eye disorders, is somewhat misleading. Many eye disorders are not covered. Only major disorders such as cataracts, glaucoma, ARMD, and diabetic retinopathy are discussed in detail. Otherwise, some other disorders are described at a high level in a few paragraphs.

Very easy to read and helpful
I am 65 years old and recently diagnosed with cataracts and glaucoma. This book was recommended to me by my eye doctor and was exactly what I needed to understand my problems. I also enjoyed the sections on the eye anatomy and exam. I highly recommend it.

Handy patient education resource
I was pleased to be able to take a copy of this very readable general ophthalmology source book with me on a lecture tour in the mideast. It made an ideal gift to patient educators for use in both an ophthalmology setting as well as the general hospital. The authors clearly have a wealth of experience in clinical ophthalmolgy and understand the kinds of questions that patients have. The language used is not intimidating nor overly technical. Explanations of various diseases and conditions are straightforward. The tone of the volume is friendly and sympathetic. This is important to an anxious reader who may be concerned about a newly diagnosed condition which could threaten his sight.However, its usefulness is not limited to patient education alone. Many health care practitioners need a refresher from time to time about basic ophthalmolgy and this reference book provides that review in a clear and concise fashion.This is a handy book to have around the clinic or home. ...
