5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book by an Excellent Surgeon
This is an excellent book by one of the world's best LASIK surgeons. Dr. Machat is so skilled, that he is often called upon to repair the damage done by other less talented surgeons. Brent A. Hanson had 5 operations from another surgeon before he went to Dr. Machat! IMO, perhaps all the king's horses and all the king's men, could not put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

3-0 out of 5 stars A patient's experience with Dr. Machat's surgical procedures
Dr. Machat has written a book which describes the proceduresfor performing lasik. However, the book fails to mention that hiscompany, TLC, is so overloaded with patient complaints, that thecompany is unable to respond to all of them.

I wish that the bookplaced a greater emphasis on the risk of having to have a corneatransplant after lasik surgery. I had to have a cornea transplantafter Dr. Machat performed lasik on me, and then dumped me as apatient...

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb text
Although this is a textbook for professionals, it can be used by patients who are keenly interested in this topic. Machat is clearly a leader in his field, and this book can be rated "6 stars". I would consider this text to be the "Bible" of LASIK.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good on surgical techniques --weak on pre-op. considerations
As a surgeon performing refractive procedures for over 15 years now, I was certainly impressed with the surgical techniques of Dr. Machat, which in fact borrow from much of my own research. He has certainly learned much, and I am impressed with his progress.

However, Dr. Machat has left a rather large gap in his coverage of pre-operative considerations, such as the need to check for scotopic pupil size, pre-existing dry eye conditions, and the presence of exphorias and extropias. He has also not discussed the increasingly higher risks of he Lasik procedure in high myopic corrections (6 diopters and above).

It's a shame that both surgeons and patients end up learning more about pre-operative considerations from bulletin boards such as surgicaleyes and eyeknowwhy than from medical treatises such as this.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive text on laser refractive surgery!
I have been heavily involved in refractive surgery for 5 years and this is the best single source on laser surgery that I have come across.

It has excellent photographs and explanations; it covers the personal LASIK techniques of many surgeons rather exhaustivley.

If you want to be involved in the fastest growing part of ey-care than this book is a MUST!!! ... Read more

As a reference book, this little handbook falls short.

As alearning tool it is also lacking, with little detail or helpfuldiagrams.

However, as a study tool, this review should serve the student well if he/she had a real reference from which to learn. That is, in fact, what it markets itself to be -- a last minute study review -- so no false advertising here.

Book Description

We are a highly visual species. Most of our information about the world comes to us through our eyes and most of our cultural and intellectual heritage is stored and transmitted as words and images to which our vision gives access and meaning. Knowing more about our eyes and vision is, therefore, one path to better understanding ourselves. And, as it happens, the human eye is a fairly representative vertebrate eye; knowing more about it tells us much about the eyes of other animals and about how they view the world and us.

In more practical terms, a better understanding of the human eye allows us to intervene more intelligently and purposefully as we attempt to correct, modify, or ameliorate disorders of the eye brought on by trauma, disease, or senescence.

Understanding the eye requires an exploration of the relationship between its structure and its function--that is, a consideration not only of how the eye and its parts are constructed, but also of what they do and how they work. Thus this book considers both the structure and the function of the human eye and how they are related, often using functional issues as a guide to the most meaningful and important features of the anatomy. Limited use of technical terms from the various disciplines that relate to the eye, definitions of terms as they are used, a glossary, and suggestions for additional reading are all included to make the text accessible to readers for whom the subject is new. Boxes interspersed throughout the text discuss methods used to study the structure of the eye and surgical procedures used to alter its structure in beneficial ways.

In addition to the main theme of structure and function, several subthemes make the general point, in different ways, that the eye and our understanding of it are dynamic and changing. Change on a geological timescale is represented by the evolutionary history of eyes generally and the human eye's place among the diversity of eyes in the animal kingdom; these issues are discussed in the Prologue. Change within a human lifetime begins with a chapter about the early stages of development in utero, continues throughout the book with the developmental histories of different parts of the eye, and concludes, in the Epilogue, with accounts of postnatal growth, maturation, and senescence. Change throughout human history in the way we have understood our eyes is another story, fragments of which are contained in a series of "vignettes" about some of the people and ideas that have influenced human thought about the eye over the past several thousand years.

The Human Eye: Structure and Function appeals to a wide audience, including all scientists who are interested in the eye and in vision; optometrists and ophthalmologists; and optometry students and ophthalmology residents. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Human Eye; Structure and Function, Clyde W. Oyster
This is an excellent book which covers comprehensively the structure and function of the human eye as its subtitle implies. The selection of subject matter is balanced, clearly presented and well illustrated. The book is sprinkled with interesting illustrated historical vignettes reminiscent of those in the classical Duke-Elder, which add, for me at least, valuable sparkle to the corresponding text. The book will be of great value to students studying the eye, professionals in the field, and perhaps equally to health professionals and students in other fields, or to any sophisticated reader looking for an up to date summary of the subject. There is an excellent expanded table of contents which can be browsed to get a quick overview of the text. Researchers will enjoy the book, but will not find specific references to the topic covered though there are comprehensive lists of sources for further reading. This is a book which deserves to be on the shelf of any collection of books about the eye ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes sense
This book gives a broad overview of this extremely common and debilitating eye disease. The co-authors, a leading ophthalmologist and a patient with macular degeneration, present the information from both the technical point of view and the laymen's point of view. The book covers many aspects of macular degeneration, including its definition, types, diagnosis, treatments, and coping methods. The treatments section includes a comparison of alternative therapies as well as standard medical treatments. There are also chapters on possible causes of macular degeneration and potential ways to lower the risk of developing the disease. The book includes a glossary and a list of resources for further information or help. If you or someone you know is diagnosed with macular degeneration, this book will be invaluable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Patient Education
I'm extremely impressed by this book. All patient education should strive to be this clear, readable, respectful, and comprehensive. It is written with understanding of and sympathy for the experience of coping with a potentially life-changing condition -- and by that I don't mean simply that the tone is warm and encouraging (although it is), but that the book is full of practical information that answers the kinds of questions that patients are likely to ask.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you've recently been diagnosed with ARMD, read this book!
A few years ago my wife had a blood vessel in her retina burst causing permanent partial vision loss in one eye. (She complained of "wavy vision" the day before she was to go to Europe on vacation - she cancelled the trip.) Since then we have had an Amsler grid on our refrigerator door, and she has learned to cope with the 'missing spot' in her field of vision.... Two weeks ago she noticed - while watching the Bloomberg channel - that she could not read a good bit of what was on the screen. This time the doctor found another leakage into the retina (not involving red blood cells); her vision returned to what it was before in a few days. The doctor 'put dye into her' to 'check her eyes out.' - BUT this time the doctor told her that she has early dry ARMD. ----- I realized that we didn't understand very much of what we were being told ... so I bought this book and spent the last two days reading it cover to cover... This is really an EXCELLENT summary. I wish we had had it before my wife's latest problem, because I would have been able to ask more intelligent questions. We will on the next checkup! This deceptively small book holds more information than I thought could be packed into a 170-page volume in large type. Dr. Robert D'Amato's explanations are not only complete, but also clear. (I finished reading it before I noticed that the Macular Degeneration Foundation has endorsed it!). I have a bent for details and proofs, for the exact pro's and con's of different 'treatments.' I learned that my wife's emotional reaction to her diagnosis (she was initially convinced that she 'was going blind') was only partially justified. Dr. D'Amato shows that this outcome is highly improbable; most people show a gradual loss, if any at all, over a period of years. I learned, however, that it is essential to keep an eye on (unintended humor there) dry ARMD so that progression into wet ARMD can be detected, and then treated. He details both current and prospective treatments for wet ARMD. ---- "Macular Degeneration" contains a very helpful glossary, and the book is filled with specific sources - so one can pursue additional research on this affliction! ----- I was NOT particularly impressed by Joan Snyder's contribution to this volume, despite the fact that she is obviously sincere. 'Alternative medicine' seems to be all the rage now, but I think it lacks the rigor of true science. Mrs. Snyder's very complete listing of alternative approaches seemed to me merely a catalog of 'ways to kid yourself.' [I was waiting for her to suggest prayer, pilgrimages, or divine healing -- which she never did, thank goodness!] Dr. D'Amato's kind words about his co-author did not hide his skepticism about her sympathy for 'alternative medicine'. He is a more patient man than I am! Since the 'alternative medicine' section occupied a relatively small part of the volume (the preface and Chapter 8) I don't feel that Mrs. Synder's contribution significantly detracted from the book's worth -in fact, for those like me who are hard-headed empiricists, the descriptions of 'alternative approaches' told me: don't waste time on this approach! ---- Hats off to the publisher: Note that the typeface is quite large which opens this valuable work to those who need it the most -- ARMD sufferers with significant vision loss! I strongly feel everyone recently diagnosed with ARMD should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Focuses on understanding of this sight-robbing condition
The condition described here is age-related but has grown significantly in recent years as the population ages: Macular Degeneration provides an analysis of the disease, its progression and its symptoms. From the latest medical treatments to options for alternatives, Macular Degeneration focuses on understanding all aspects of the sight-robbing condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars First book that answered my questions!
I have been trying to find info on new treatments for macular degeneration. What is the difference between photodynamic therapy (PDT/Visudyne) versus transpupillary thermotherapy? This book covered all the latest treaments, even ones in experimental stages. Amazingly, the book is also comprehensive in its discussion of diet and alternative therapies. As well, it explained all the nuts and bolts of the disease process. I found it exciting to read and quite inspiring. It is a "must read" if you have macular degeneration. ... Read more
