The magnificent work of the author has helped us to start working with low vision patients at a small low vision clinic that has been recently created. As I am from South America, all the information that the author wrote down the book was perfectly right for my patients, even tough they are so different. It's an interesting book that is practical, and also fully developed for the Ophthalmologyst or Optometrist that work with the low vision patients. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE text for Optometrists to understand Glaucoma
This is a great book for optometry students, and optometrists alike! If you've got any questions about the peculiar disease of glaucoma, read this book. Not only does it explain diagnosis of the many forms of the disease, but has an in depth section that explains pharmacological management as well as surgical management. The discussions are fairly up to date, and easy to follow. The text does a good job at integrating as much new information and research as possible. 2-0 out of 5 stars Not very well researched !
The title incluudes the words"reversing " and preventingmacular degeneration and headlines "overcoming visionloss", but inside says macular degeneration is not reversable.I beg to differ as there is nomention of the benefits of chelation therapy for the eyes. There is much to be said for chelation therapy as a treatment ,as the build-up of deposits behind the macula is one of the most direct causes of macular degeneration. Theonly known way to remove the deposits and clear out the circulatory system at the backof the eye is CHELATION THERAPY. How can one present himself as an "expert" withouthaving any mention of ths typeof treatment? To be sure, diet, smoking and lifestyle are important and these are well covered, but in my opinion, the doctor needs to do some more homework.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Book's Title is Misleading
When I saw the title "See Again" and read the two onling customer reviews of this book I became very excited that at last there was a way to help my 85 year old mother with macular degeneration see again. But, this book is not about reversing macular degeneration for those who have it now, as it is billed. It presents the view that macular degeneration can be prevented through nutrition, exercise and the use of protective eyeware. A great many pages are devoted to discussing vegetables, fruits, food preparation and recipes. Nowhere does the book demonstrated that sight will be returned through a specialized diet. My mother and I are very disappointed that it offers no new information or hope on reversing the disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, well written and easy to follow
I wish I had read this book 20 years ago so I could have prevented the vision loss which is making it hard to read and write. At least I now know what to do. The four step program is easy to follow, and I have given my children a copy so that they can get started early on a program to prevent macular degeneration.

This book is a must if you have macular degeneration, or if you want to prevent it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Offers hope for people with macular degeneration

Book Description

A comprehensive reference to help people care for their eyes and protect their vision—with the latest information on the changes and diseases that occur with aging.

When all is well with our eyes, most of us take them for granted. But when our vision is blurred, or our eyes are itchy and watery, it's hard to concentrate on anything but our eyes. In The Eye Book, three eye care specialists present a comprehensive reference to help readers care for their eyes and protect their vision, with special attention to changes and diseases that occur in the adult years.

After detailing how the various parts of the eye work together so we can see, the authors review everything that can go wrong—from myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism to the major disorders of cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. They also thoroughly describe each part of the eye and the problems that can develop, from the irritation of itchy eyelids and conjunctivitis to emergency situations such as a detached retina. They describe the signs and symptoms of all these problems and how to deal with them, including when to apply a warm compress—and when to head to the emergency room. Medical and surgical treatment of both minor eye irritations and major diseases are explained in detail, so readers know where to turn and what to expect.

The authors also tell readers what happens during an eye examination and how to recognize an eye emergency. They explain all about eyeglasses, including the various kinds of bifocals, and describe the care and maintenance of contact lenses in a way that makes wearing them a viable option for anyone who wishes to do so. They detail the special concerns of people with systemic diseases such as diabetes, and indicate how common medications—from antibiotics and antidepressants to tamoxifen—affect the eyes. The pros and cons of refractive surgery are discussed, as are the special problems of people with low vision.

An Appendix lists medications used to treat eye conditions and the side effects of those medications. The book is fully illustrated with 55 line drawings and includes a Symptoms Index that will direct readers to sections of the book which describe the possible causes of the specific symptoms they are experiencing. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Very Technical
This is a very encyclopedia-type of book. It has a lot of information about different eye problems and is a great book describing the functions of the different parts of the eye and what goes on at visits to the eye doctor. But it doesn't give alot of information on saving your sight, taking care of your eyes, remedies for problems or anything like that. The book claims to be "The Owner's Manual for your Eyes" but I don't think this to be very accurate. Its from 1998, but doesn't even include alot about laser surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
The Eye Book by Gary Cassel is extremely well-organized and easy to read. Anyone wanting to know how their amazing eyes work should read this book. It also conveys basic information about many eye diseases.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good layman's guide for general eye information
The book is a good layman's guide to understanding the eye and the most common types of eye problems. However, the subtitle, A complete guide to eye disorders, is somewhat misleading. Many eye disorders are not covered. Only major disorders such as cataracts, glaucoma, ARMD, and diabetic retinopathy are discussed in detail. Otherwise, some other disorders are described at a high level in a few paragraphs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to read and helpful
I am 65 years old and recently diagnosed with cataracts and glaucoma. This book was recommended to me by my eye doctor and was exactly what I needed to understand my problems. I also enjoyed the sections on the eye anatomy and exam. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy patient education resource
I was pleased to be able to take a copy of this very readable general ophthalmology source book with me on a lecture tour in the mideast. It made an ideal gift to patient educators for use in both an ophthalmology setting as well as the general hospital. The authors clearly have a wealth of experience in clinical ophthalmolgy and understand the kinds of questions that patients have. The language used is not intimidating nor overly technical. Explanations of various diseases and conditions are straightforward. The tone of the volume is friendly and sympathetic. This is important to an anxious reader who may be concerned about a newly diagnosed condition which could threaten his sight. However, its usefulness is not limited to patient education alone. Many health care practitioners need a refresher from time to time about basic ophthalmolgy and this reference book provides that review in a clear and concise fashion. This is a handy book to have around the clinic or home. ... Book Description

A wide variety of optical instruments exists in which the human eye forms an integral part of the system. This book provides a detailed description of the visual ergonomics of such instruments. The book begins with a section on image formation and basic optical components. The authors then discuss various optical instruments that can be adequately described using geometrical optics, and follow this with a section on diffraction and interference, and the instruments based on these effects. There are separate sections devoted to ophthalmic instruments and aberration theory, with a final section covering visual ergonomics in depth. Containing many problems and solutions, this book will be of great use to undergraduate and graduate students of optometry, optical design, optical engineering, and visual science, and to professionals working in these and related fields. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Landmark text on the topic
I am a researcher in the field of visual optics. I first obtained a copy of this book nearly 5 years ago, when I was a lecturer at the University of Auckland. I thought the book was excellent then and the subsequent passage of time has reinforced my view.

I refer to my copy constantly. When I am dealing with a new and complicated topic as part of my work my first instinct is to check if Smith and Atchison have anything to say on the topic, and I'm usually rewarded. They nearly always provide good introductory material and analytical tools. The book contains very basic level material which is suitable for undergraduates in the area of clinical optics and develops these concepts to postgrad and research levels.

The section on aberrations is extremely useful, although it does not use the Zernike polynomials that have become popular in the last few years, it has still allowed me to do useful analysis of my data. I have also found the sections on optical quality calculations extremely useful, and the appendices on schematic eyes are the most complete I've come across in the literature.

I look forward to many subsequent editions of this text. An excellent book for researchers and students.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for Ophthalmic Optics
This book has good content, particularly for ophthalmic optics. The description of optical aberrations is useful. However, the treatment of paraxial optics is confusing. The authors should avoid the use of symbols that are not writeable (e.g. Cyrillic), and obscure Greek letters. All in all, a useful book. ... Read more

Vision research is one of the largest and most active areas of brain research. Psychologists, neuroscientists, opthamologists, optometrists, computer scientists, and engineers all have an interest in the practical side of the subject. A Practical Guide to Vision Research is a clear and comprehensive laboratory manual providing the detailed information necessary to begin vision research. Spanning the full range of disciplines, this book provides protocols and practical advice on key experimental techniques, along with useful background information. It covers the choice and use of modern light sources and optical components, with particular consideration of how to generate specific colors, and describes the creation and presentation of images, with an emphasis on current computer techniques. It also discusses the design of psychological experiments. Finally, it provides a thorough coverage of all types of physiological measurement, including ERG and evoked potentials, accomodation, eye movements, and pupil diameter. It presents the "tricks of the trade" in vision research, from some of its leading practitioners, of a kind that cannot be found in published papers and are often only acquired through direct experience. Accessible to beginning researchers with little background in optics and electronics, the book is an essential tool for students and a valuable resource for experienced researchers new to the field. ...
