Book Description

With more than one hundred illustrated techniques, Atlas of Manipulative Techniques for the Cranium & Face is one of the most comprehensive sources of cranial techniques available.

Organized by bone, each technique is illustrated through remarkable drawings which graphically depict the placement and movement of the practitioner's hands on the patient's head. Accompanying text systematically describes the purpose of the technique, the position of both patient and practitioner, the points of contact, and the movement of hands and fingers in relation to the cranial motion.

The concise, systematic description of each technique and the vivid illustrations which accompany the text have contributed equally to the success which this book has enjoyed throughout the world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any practioner dealing with musculoskeletal disor
This text is a must for any practioner who wants to learn about musculoskeletal medicine. The text integrates the diagnostic strength of Cyriax'Orthopaedic Medicine, the energy of Chinese Medicine, the ligament diagnostics of Hackett, Ongley and Dorman, Travell's Myofascial Pain, the biochemistry of nutrition, and the spinal diagnostics and philosophy of Osteopathy. This is a massive work that encompasses and coalesces the many and seemingly disparate fields that any sophisticated practitioner needs to know. The information is useful both for understanding multiple approaches, and as "how to" book for performing many of the recommended procedures. It is not a book that will languish shelf but will be well worn by continued use. Bravo and well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent integration of Western and Oriental orthopedics
Dr. Marcus synthesizes three systems of discipline- energetic, medical and functional in a very coherent manner. It is an extremely difficult task to integrate Western orthopedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, but I believe that Dr. Marcus has done a beautiful Job. This book is the first of his kind and is an important addition to Western literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for the practicing physician and student
Pretty good book though I was surprised about the author's comment about the late, great osteopath Larry Jones who actually developed positional release through strain/counterstrain.I remember Larry as being a friendly, helpful chap who was much more flexible regarding his techniques rather than the rigid clinician that the author describes. Regardless, the British Osteopath Chaitow goes into details of the various positional release techniques such as strain/counterstrain, functional release etc. which helps clarifies all the terminology. Chaitow also has a video which is a good acompaniment to the book. Kind of wish I had this for the boards.

On a very complete way, once more, Chaitow shows on Positional Release Techiniques important ways to restablish functional state of different structure, such as muscle spasm, enhacing circulation and more. Book Description

This influential book is the last work of A.T. Still, the founder of osteopathy, whose ideas have greatly influenced the practice of all forms of manual medicine during this century. The book was first published in 1910 but was long out of print. In this final summation of the fundamentals of osteopathy, Dr. Still expresses his vision of health and disease, and what it means to be an osteopath. He then looks at each region of the body and describes in detail his approach to the diagnosis and treatment of specific disorders.

A new introduction by Harold Goodman, D.O. provides historical background and sets this book in the context of the 'Old Doctor's' other writings. This new cloth edition of Osteopathy Research and Practice should be required reading for all practitioners of manual medicine. ... Read more

Book Description

This book completes Jean-Pierre Barral's widely acclaimed four-volume exploration of the osteopathic implications of the dysfunctions of the internal viscera. The focus of this volume is on the pelvis, especially of women.

The introduction provides an overview of the relationships of the pelvis and spine. Tests which are particularly useful for pelvic disorders, including the genitohumeral and completed Laségue's tests, are detailed. Also included are imaging studies that demonstrate the utility of the viscersl manipulative approach to the pelvis.

Chapter 2 focuses on the bladder, and especially the treatment of stress incontinence and the effects of the various systems of pressure on the lower pelvis. The role of bladder restrictions in low back pain, lower leg problems, and hip pain is explained.

Chapter 3 discusses the uterus, focusing on the cervix. The reader will gain an appreciation for the osteopathic view of the importance of the different motions affecting the uterus, and how they can become dysfunctional.

Chapter 4 concludes the tour of the female pelvis with the uterine tubes and ovaries. The holistic osteopathic viewpoint is typified by Barral's presentation of the various elements that must work in harmony for fertilization to occur ... Read more

Book Description

The osteopathic profession has developed many treatment modalities and approaches to manipulation. Ligamentous articular strain is the name given by William G. Sutherland, D.O., the founder of cranial osteopathy, to a group of techniques that he used for treating the body outside the core axis of the craniosacral system. The term has since come to refer to a wide variety of techniques that engage the body's own healing mechanisms in a relatively direct manner.

For over thirty years the Dallas Osteopathic Study Group, originally under the tutelage of Rollin Becker, D.O., has been exploring this type of manipulation. Ligamentous Articular Strain is the distillation of their work. The introductory chapters address the historical development of this approach, and review some of its scientific underpinnings. The remaining chapters are devoted to an examination of the body, area by area, from the feet to the shoulders, describing and depicting effective manipulative techniques.

Ligamentous Articular Strain provides clear instructions and vivid illustrations which will enable the trained practitioner to quickly gain proficiency in these techniques. It also presents a cogent approach to working with the concepts of the key lesion and the bowstring, first developed by Rollin Becker. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great practical book for osteopathic physicians.
This is a great practical book for the osteopathic physician. I use it frequently when caring for hospital patients. While it has sections on various types of diseases (upper respiratory, GI,etc.) Dr. Kuchera also has a basic outline on how to use osteopathy in any sort of disease state. This means you can take the basic philosophy and apply it in any situation. I highly recommend it to all osteopathic physicians and students of osteopathy.

He describes the theories underlying the use of spinal manipulation developed by osteopathy's founder, Andrew Taylor Still; traces the movement's early success despite heated opposition from the orthodox medical community; details the internal struggles to broaden osteopathy's scope to include the full range of pharmaceuticals and surgery; recounts the efforts of osteopathic colleges to achieve parity with institutions granting M.D. degrees; and looks at the continuing effort by its practitioners to achieve greater recognition and visibility. Gevitz also examines such significant events as the formation of the American Osteopathic Association and teh amalgamation of California D.O.'s with the orthodox medical establishment in the early 1960s. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars History you will need
I bought the book in order to be prepared for my med school interview but never got it quite read. I found out upon my arrival at school in the fall that the book was a required read for my History of Osteopathic Medicine course. The book is a great resource to make a person more familiar with an ever growing branch of medicine; that there isn't just a world of MD's. And who knows, maybe it will get you a bit ahead of the game for your first class in your Osteopathic medical school :o)

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough
As chairperson of the social medicine department at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Norman Gevitz knows firsthand the details of ostepathy. This book is a thorough, well-written review of osteopathic medicine's climb into the medical arena; originating from the depths of the mind of its founder, Andrew Taylor Still in the late 1800's, into the growing profession of the 1980's. Unfortunately, however, it does not cover the growth and expansion of osteopathy in the last twenty years of the 20th century. It does explain, though, the legal and social struggles that osteopathy survived in its first 90 years. Gevitz also does a wonderful job explaining what ostopathy is and how it evolved from a holistic, drug-free approach to medical care into an alternative, legally licensed medical practice. I highly recommend this book for osteopathic medical school applicants. It is also an excellent book for those interested in the history and sociology of medicine in the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best
This book offers an extensive review of the history of osteopathy. It also illustrates this medicines important role in the world, as well as its future direction and how this philosophy views the patient.

3-0 out of 5 stars Historical
Good history of Osteopathy from 1828 to late 1970s, but the modern osteopathic techniques are not mentioned (book was published in 1982..so a lot is missing in this recent time period). Otherwise a good thorough history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for DO applicants!!
I read this book cover to cover before applying to osteopathic medical school and believe that it made a big difference in getting admitted. I was able to comprehensively discuss osteopathic principles and practice and critically evaluate decisions that the osteopathic profession has made along the way. The book is well researched (I think that it is based on Dr. Gevitz's dissertation) and historically accurate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn More When You Want It Most
I first read this book about six months ago. I found it through a search at my Milwaukee Public Library. After looking at about 10 books I found this very comprehensive with a good glossary and index.

We women think we have read and understand osteoporosis until some one close to you has been found to have the disease and the comments are this is the worst I have ever seen. This from an 85 year old woman who raised chickens and sold eggs on a farm up until 30 years ago and then retired to town. It is not believed that any Dr. recommended that she take calcium or any other preventitive measure. In fact she fell 18 months ago breaking a wrist and no one even thought to do a bone scan at that time. Thanks to my sister-in-law she demanded a bone scan prior to surgery to replace a knee.

This book discusses medicine and what you need to do - exercise and medication to turn the bone density around. Up until reading this I had no idea that the density could be reversed. I also see this in other recent conference notes etc.

We ordered this book for all of my mother-in-laws sons and today I am sad to say that my sister, who also has spent all of her life on a farm has osteoporosis and part of a blind osteoporosis 10 year study (she is not going to participate any longer as she feels she will be to busy getting well,) at a pretty high level so I am ordering the book for her. ... Book Description

Overcoming suspicion, ridicule, and outright opposition from the American Medical Association, the osteopathic medical profession today serves the health needs of more than thirty million Americans. The DOs chronicles the development of this controversial medical movement from the nineteenth century to the present. Historian Norman Gevitz describes the philosophy and practice of osteopathy, as well as its impact on medical care. From the theories underlying the use of spinal manipulation developed by osteopathy's founder, Andrew Taylor Still, Gevitz traces the movement's early success, despite attacks from the orthodox medical community, and details the internal struggles to broaden osteopathy's scope to include the full range of pharmaceuticals and surgery. He also recounts the efforts of osteopathic colleges to achieve parity with institutions granting M.D. degrees and looks at the continuing effort by osteopathic physicians and surgeons to achieve greater recognition and visibility.

In print continuously since 1982, The DOs has now been thoroughly updated and expanded to include two new chapters addressing recent and current challenges and to bring the history of the profession up to the beginning of the new millennium. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars pedantic (look it up youll have to look up everything else)
though this book is supposed to have been revised for the general public im sure even professionals will find the overuse of medical terminology tedious.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear anatomy
I found this book to be very helpful when doing my certification exam. It clearly explains the anatomy of the system and broadens one's understanding of what this therapy is about. I don't believe that this therapy is something that can be learned from a book, so I didn't have that expectation from it. The techniques that he does share are simple, basic techniques that one can begin to play with. If it stirs your curiousity for more, get yourself to a class. I've also found it helpful for clients of mine that want to know more about the nuts and bolts of the technique in a readable and clear form, without the length of a textbook.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book
Get the "Heart of Listening" instead. Pictures are poor and the text is very hard to read. There is no logical order to this book. The author should have worried more about the content of the book instead of using words like "Serendipitous". Gee, when is the last time you've seen that..High School!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent look at the function of part of the nervous system
Blood brain barrier, cerebral spinal fluid circulation, the layers of dura, locations of vesicles and other structures...all the things my anatomy/physiology professors spent not-quite-enough-time on. Putting it all together at a level that someone with a reasonable knowledge of anatomy can absorb, this book resembles a textbook in some ways. Vague on actual practices of this therapy, but personally I don't care because the a/p is the meat of the book and it's very interesting and enlightening. ... Read more

Book Description

While there is considerable diversity in the forms and styles of cranial manipulation, all would agree that a thorough understanding of the sutures of the cranium and face is essential. Yet until now, no one has given these important structures the attention they deserve.

In this ground-breaking work, the author describes the structure and motion of the sutures in much greater detail than ever before, showing with extensive photographic evidence how the bones of the cranium actually move, and how the practitioner can optimally affect that movement. Based on many years of experience in both the clinic and anatomy lab, Dr. Pick's analysis is supported by over 300 photographs and illustrations.

Systematically examining each of the sutures, including those of the face, vault, and base, Dr. Pick brings clarity and precision to these descriptions. Everyone who touches the head with a therapeutic intent will learn many valuable lessons from this book.

This is likely to become the standard reference on the cranial sutures for many years to come, and is an essential book for all practitioners of cranial manipulation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have reference book
This is a first rate holistic treatment of sub-adult osteology. The text covers the entire juvenile skeleton. Chapters contain drawings of each skeletal element, descriptions of growth, unique developmental attributes and in some cases, illustration of the element through different growth stages to see the sequence of changes of the bone up to adulthood.

The usefulness of this text is comparable to Tim White's Human Osteology. The White book uses extensive real life photos with text description and predominantly covers adult morphology. This juvenile osteology book craftfully uses hand drawings and color illustration to depict the skeleton and muscle attachments. Although it may seem pricely, this is a must-have reference book for those students and researchers interested in human osteology, growth and development, forensics and comparative anatomy. ...
