Book Description

Until recently considered an inevitable part of aging, osteoporosis is typically diagnosed only after a serious complication such as fracture. It is now possible, however, to diagnose high-risk patients beforehand. Easily performed noninvasive tests estimate bone mass, and patients at risk can be treated with new drugs whose efficacy for fracture reduction has been proven in clinical trials.

Osteoporosis: An Evidence-Based Guide to Prevention and Management, the newest volume in the acclaimed ACP Women’s Health series, addresses every important facet of this common disease. The latest scientific evidence and the extensive clinical experience of the authors provide essential information on the origins and progress of osteoporosis. Treatment options are thoroughly reviewed.

The busy primary care physician will appreciate an entire section of clinical cases. Commonly seen presentations are analyzed in depth with regard to risk, management, and therapy.

Osteoporosis has been endorsed by the American Geriatrics Society and the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. ... Read more

Book Description

Since the time of Hippocrates, medical practitioners have noted the clinical significance of temperature changes found over different parts of the body. In Manual Thermal Diagnosis Jean-Pierre Barral brings this form of diagnosis into the new millenium.

As one aspect of the physical examination, manual thermal diagnosis is a method that utilizes sensitivity to temperature changes to identify dysfunction within the body. It is useful across a wide spectrum of health disciplines, and augments other forms of diagnosis.

Manual Thermal Diagnosis begins with a review of the scientific understanding of body heat, and the clinical significance of changes in surface temperature. The reader is then provided with the tools that are needed to transform one's hands into sensitive diagnostic instruments. Each area of the body is surveyed, from the cranium, face and neck to the thorax, abdomen, pelvis and posterior visceral projections.

This is an indispensable book for practitioners who want to discover more of what their hands can tell them. ... Read more

Book Description

The only arthritis guide you'll ever need-from the author of the landmark health classic Sinus Survival.

Arthritis can be healed. But the healing will not arise from adopting a single miracle treatment or taking a magical herb or pill. Living successfully with arthritis can be achieved by the simple, committed lifestyle changes and combination of healthful natural and traditional treatments explored in easy-to-understand detail in Robert S. Ivker's Arthritis Survival.

The twenty-one million Americans who suffer from osteoarthritis are often also suffering from unhealthy nutritional, physical, and even emotional lifestyles. Yet too frequently they are told simply to reach into their medicine cabinet for a cure. While conventional medicine plays an invaluable role in alleviating the symptoms of this disease, the Arthritis Survival program will help readers truly relieve their pain and replace it with a feeling of wellness and hope.

In meticulous and easily understood detail, Arthritis Survival begins with a "quick fix" guide that outlines the herbs, vitamins, and other substances that can begin to relieve pain right away. Dr. Ivker then lays out a program of lifestyle changes-from exercise, to eating choices, to emotional factors-that will help readers to gain mastery over arthritis. He provides specific recipes for healthful eating, a wellness self-test, and an extensive guide to resources that will allow readers to further shape their own arthritis survival program. Resource guide. Index.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for medical school but for dental school.....
Barrons is a great book for medical school applicants but doesn't offer too much in the way for dental school applicants. The information found is not organized and I wouldn't personally recommend it. Instead, buy Dr. Kanani's book on dental school admission at dentalschooladmission.com The information is more current, better organized, and theres much more useful information that will actually help you do well in studying for the DAT, but more importantly, in presenting a strong and compelling application that will get you a seat in dental school. It got me in!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad job
I had inhibitions about buying this book due to the other reviews, but I've found it extremely helpful. There are plenty of stats regarding the MCATs, GPA and enrollment. Although the descriptions of the curriculae aren't as in depth as I had hoped, it's more than enough to form some initial opinions about the various schools.

3-0 out of 5 stars a very good broad general overview with some mistakes
This book is great in terms of giving stats on allopathic schools and information about types of medicine and the MCAT. I feel like maybe too much was being attempted. I don't know about the dental school info., but as for the osteopathic medical section, there are lots of mistakes regarding class sizes (more than once the entire school's population was given as the first year population) and there is very little information, in general, given for each school. And one more thing: there are now 19 osteo schools in the US (not 17) and the application process for each begins with the AACOMAS application. I guess these incorrect details can be attributed to the book's EXTREME outdatedness in terms of osteopathy. However, it is the only book I've found that is so comprehensive in terms of giving the average pre-med a decent glimpse of everything there is out there regarding the medical field and medical education.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate data or out of date materials.
If you are looking for Dental school information this book is inaccurate. Most of the material is out of date. It does not contain very much information about each school. It is a waste of your money.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent source of medical schools.
Barron's Guide to Medical and Dental Schools is an excellent source for pre-medical, dental, osteopathic students. The authors included prerequistites and admission requirements for most of the programs in the U.S. and Canada. It also offers limited information on foriegn medical schools. Some information is outdated and needs to be revised. Very reasonably priced. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers COMLEX I completely... COMLEX II too
I read this book cover-to-cover three times and maxed the OMT and Osteopathic Principles sections of the COMLEX I. The COMLEX II felt equally good. The bottom line? This is a very easy to read and understand text that clarifies everything and removes all doubt. The perfect refresher for those who want to make sure they bag all the points they can get.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent source for the physician and medical student!
This book is a must have, especially when studing for the board exams. I found the information easy to understand. And most of all the questions in the back are just like the questions on the boards. Don't bother with anything else! This is the best review book in osteopathic medicine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for board review.
The OMT Review by Savarese is a "must have" for Osteopathic Medical students. I bought this book close to the end of my second year to help me study for "boards" and I wish I would have bought it sooner. It would have been a GREAT resource throughout my first two years of school. 1-0 out of 5 stars Skimpy at Best
I graduate from Berkeley, I'm finishing my premed requirements and I am seriously considering a future in osteopathic medicine. I bought this book believing that it would cover in depth fellowship/residency opportunities, day-in-the-life, practice areas/scope (in depth) etc. The book is big-type-font and in terms of actual pages, it's less than 100 (and the book iself is about the size of a palm pilot!). The information is outdated and skimpy at best, and the majority of the focus tends to center around the idea that "osteopathic physicians are now considered equal (almost) to allopathic physicians" and that all students of osteopathic medicine should go into a DO program solely to practice primary care (for the most part). The way statistical measurements are portrayed/discussed is flawed (thank you professor Rice (Statistics 2 at Berkeley)) and if anything I am more turned off after reading the book. Finally, an extensive portion of the book is spent thanking various people for their help in this 'project.' Personally, I do not think the author is indebted to anyone - the 'project' is poorly written, outdated, misrepresents numerical data, and truely should never have been written. Moreover, it costs about 10 dollars - you get what you pay for. There is much better information on the web(www.studentdoctor.net/do/index.asp), and on the admissions webpages for the various osteopathic schools (and www.aacom.org etc). ... Read more

Book Description

Robert Fulford, D.O. (1905-1997) was an important, if enigmatic, figure in late twentieth-century osteopathy. Trained at the Kansas City School of Osteopathy and Surgery (class of 1941), he was a strong believer in the "triune" nature of man---physical, mental, and spiritual---and the importance of diagnosing and treating the whole person, not just the physical symptoms.

Dr. Fulford's career was a testament to this ideal, what A.T. Still called the philosopher physician. In the mid-1940s he studied cranial osteopathy with William Garner Sutherland and became a lifelong member (and one-time president) of The Cranial Academy. During the course of a practice that spanned six decades he explored a wide spectrum of scientific and philosophical ideas about the basis and mechanics of life. Nothing was off limits---field theory, Aryuvedic medicine, biomagnetics, psychological and subtle energy medicine, crystals. Always he followed Sutherland's advice to "dig on," integrating whatever was useful into the practice of what he termed "twenty-first century medicine."

Robert Fulford, D.O. and the Philosopher Physician is both an intellectual biography and a practical introduction to Dr. Fulford's methods of diagnosis and treatment. In addition to tracing the principal figures and ideas that influenced his thought, there are sample protocols of Fulford's history-taking, physical examination and general treatments, and exercises for learning to discern the human energy field ("etheric body") and treating with "intention." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ON THE HEART OF TRUE HEALING
This is an amazing book. Dr. Fulford was ostensibly a simple family doctor, but for years was respected by his peers as a master healer. Dr. Zachary Comeaux captures the essence of what made this extraordinary healer "tick." Focusing more on the philosophical principles of Fulford's work than on technique, Dr Comeaux makes it possible for all students of healing to "catch" something of this man's greatness. Importantly, the author details the path Fulford followed to become the healer he was, chronicling the good doctor's own influences. This enables the student, whether novice or advanced, to follow his lead and enter a vast world of energetically-based wisdom larger than any one person. Personally, since first being exposed to Dr. Fulford I sought out everything I could find on what he read, studied, recommended, and who he had influenced. Dr. Comeaux, in a thoroughly scholarly, yet friendly, manner does this for the reader in the pages of his book. I hope this remarkable work inspires further writings about and by this wonderful physician to be released to the public. Do yourself a favor and get this book and plunge into an ocean of inspiration. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars WOW, just what the doctor ordered!
Osteopathic Medicine: A Reformation in Progress is a long overdue reference for those seeking accurate information about the history and development of the ostoepathic medical profession. It concisely reviews the historical foundations and evolution of osteopathic medicine from a frontier-based medical sect to a full-fledged social movement in American health care.

In a well-written and engaging style, the authors provide the reader with a critical appraisal of where the osteopathic medical profession has been, its past achievements and current challenges, as well as a clear course for its future development. It also explores the dimensions of osteopathic medical education and practice that distinguish DOs from their MD counterparts. The authors review the philosophical foundations that drive the unique osteopathic approach to patient care as well as a critical appraisal of efforts to incorporate osteopathic principles and practice into the broader infrastructure and science of total health care management.

This is book is highly recommended reading for all pre-medical students considering a career in osteopathic medicine, current osteopathic medical students and residents, as well as practicing physicians, and interested lay people. This book will also be of particular interest to medical educators and public health policy-makers who work to further refine and develop a health care system that is compassionate, accessible, evidence-based, integrative, and technologically advanced. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars DEMOLISHES THE MILK MYTH!
Appleton's well-documented yet reader-friendly book shows that maintaining healthy bones is not based merely on ingesting dairy products, despite what the billboards proclaim. In fact, she shows us that excess dairy consumption can actually CAUSE osteoporosis. Since I can't eat dairy foods, I found much reassurance in her book. For a long time I wondered why the heavy milk and cheese eaters I have known seemed to lose their teeth, bow their backs, and break their hips in spite of all the calcium they had consumed. Appleton explains that there are other factors which cause osteoporosis which we don't hear about in the mainstream press, such as excess protein, sodium, and sugar. I've been following her suggestions for about a year, and my forty-seven-year-old bones and joints are feeling very good these days.

4-0 out of 5 stars Homeostasis key to Osteoporosis
Your bones are more than your calcium/magnesium balance. This book takes the mystery out of understanding why the body loses calcium and how we can reverse the problem without massive doses of minerals. The key is understanding how our diet and lifestyle damages our bodies efforts to stay in balance, homeostasis. I read the older edition of this book and maybe it has improved in the area of recipies and nutrition but the theory is great. If the new edition has the latest nutrition information about glyconutritionals and biochemical balance then I would up the grade to five stars. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars POS for Dental School Information
This is a waste of any pre-dental student's time. I didn't read the medical stuff (which is over 2/3 of this book) but I did read the dental material and it was a waste. The information on the DAT is superficial at best and plainly WRONG. It incorrectly states a zillion things like that the DAT is a paper test offered twice a year (uh no?). It also has a profile for each school but the information that it provides on each one is quite variable. Some have complete information that is really useful and others have nothing at all 'data not available' and others dont' list relevant information to help you out. The sample DAT questions are good but you're not buying this book for the DAT. They obviously just didn't take the time to update the book from previous editions and it is questionable if any of the information about dentistry trends, etc is even relevant anymore. ... Book Description

Osteoarthritis is the most common joint pathology which primarily affects the older population. The disease is characterized by unique pathological changes in some synovial joints, predominantly affecting the articular cartilage, but also entire joints, including the synovial tissue and subchondral bone. The remarkable growth of research on normal and abnormal biology of tissues in the articulating joint, including the application of novel molecular biological approaches and new imaging techniques, is reflected in this volume. It describes the current state of knowledge and helps to further understand the etiopathology of osteoarthritis, hopefully leading to early detection of the disease and novel treatment modalities. The volume contains contributions and discussions from a select group of investigators, all experts in this field, who met at the conference "The Many Faces of Osteoarthritis", held in June 2001 at Lake Tahoe, to acknowledge Klaus E. Kuettner and his contributions to osteoarthritis research.
