Book Description

Keep your family safe from tick-borne infections

With millions around the world infected–and millions more at risk–Lyme and other tick-related disorders are today’s fastest-growing infectious diseases. And while there has been much progress in combating these illnesses, we are a long way from eliminating them.Early treatment is crucial–and there’s no better way to get informed and be prepared to deal with these diseases than to read this book.

This comprehensive guide tells you everything you need to know to protect yourself and your family from the pain of Lyme, including vital information about the new Lyme disease vaccines. Written by Lyme disease pioneer Karen Vanderhoof-Forschner–cofounder of the Lyme Disease Foundation and a Lyme sufferer herself–this updated and expanded edition provides the latest on the multiple diseases that can be transmitted in a single tick bite and the symptoms that indicate you’ve been infected. In easy-to-understand language, the author discusses the often controversial issues of diagnosis and treatment of Lyme while reviewing the other tick-borne diseases in North America, such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, tularemia, the emerging ehrlichioses, and some that are considered potential biowarfare agents. She offers expert advice on:

  • Protecting yourself from disease-carrying ticks–and what to do if you find one on your skin
  • Obtaining the best medical treatment
  • Accessing online information on vaccines, repellents, and the latest research
  • Finding self-help and support organizations, state medical complaint boards, products, and related services
  • Starting a school or business prevention program

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book written about Lyme disease.
Everything You Need to Know About Lyme Disease, by Karen Vanderhoof-Forschner, is by far the best book written on the subject, especially for people lacking an extensive medical terminology vocabulary. The book is also a good starting point for the curious clinician wishing to find acurate information on Lyme disease. Karen Vanderhoof-Forschner has painted a very clear, conscise picture of what Lyme disease and its manifestations are. The book includes a very well referenced timeline of the disease starting in Europe in 1883. After reading this book, the reader will realize that recognition and discovery are two very different words and, no matter how many credentials a doctor may have, he can easily miss this diagnosis if he does not have the facts about Lyme disease. A doctor is only as good as the information he has. I feel the book gives the reader, doctor or patient, a very good acccount of Lyme disease and its complications. Ms. Vanderhoof-Forschner has gone the extra mile and provided the reader with a wealth of references . I only wish I could give the book six stars on a five star system. I would like to thank Ms. Vanderhoof-Forschner for writing this book . The information it contains is invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and readable up-to-date resource on Lyme disease
Information presented in this book is essential for anyone (public or medical professional)who wants to know the latest on Lyme disease. Factual information, presented in an understandable format that never underestimates the reader's intelligence and common sense, is presented by one of the true heroes in the Lyme disease saga. Mrs. Vanderhoof-Forschner's personal experience is the driving force behind this well-executed, fact-filled, medically-sound and resource-filled book. This is a must for anyone serious about this complex disease and a handy reference guide for further information.

Rita L. Stanley, Ph.D.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST BUY for ALL
This is an excellent overview of the disease with detail a doctor or interest patient would want to know. It handles information with non-alarmist views and scientific accuracy.

Even better is the updated new version that includes data on other tick-borne diseases. The writing shows respect for patients and the medical community.

I really like the information that addresses the questions about possible Lyme and other diseases in the midwest and other areas that are not considered to have lyme disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yep. This is the book you want.
Fantastic book, and clearly the best that I read during my recovery from LD. Thorough, level-headed, wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is NOT an alarmist's book, but a MUST READ!
My children and I have chronic Lyme disease. I was misdiagnosed for over twelve years and unknowingly passed the disease to my children via pregnancy. Contrary to the reader's statement that this is an "alarmist" book, this book is a MUST READ, especially for anyone suffering with this disease. The reader who stated otherwise should be ashamed to have sounded the alarmist bell him/herself (especially since that reader does NOT have Lyme disease and therefore has no idea of the suffering involved)! Antibiotics are effective only if the disease is caught early, as early as within 48 hours of infection and perhaps as long as up to 6 weeks after infection. Otherwise, the odds dramatically decrease for antibiotics working to rid one of Lyme disease. Unfortunately, by the time symptoms are apparent, it is usually too late for antibiotics to effectively treat the disease. Only approximately 40% of persons with Lyme disease remember a tick bite or develop the "bull's-eye" rash. Therefore, most persons with the disease go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed and untreated for an extended time. Once finally diagnosed after I was again bitten and did see a tick bite and rash, my children and I suffered through several months of antibiotic treatment that made us sicker, not better, and not just from spirochete "die off", but because the antibiotics started to attack our systems. Most persons with Lyme disease WILL continue with certain possibly irreversible symptoms, such as Lyme-related arthritis, even after antibiotic treatment. Integrative medicine, which is a combination treatment of homeopathic (alternative, such as certain herbs and nutritional supplements) and allopathic (conventional, such as antibiotics) as well as dietary changes (such as reduction or elimination of meat consumption, as well as eliminating all sugars) appears to be the best approach for sufferers of Lyme disease, especially those with chronic Lyme disease. The fact is that Lyme disease IS scary and IS a huge problem of epidemic proportion that MUST be addressed. Sticking ones head in the sand and hoping it will simply go away or ignoring the cold, hard, at times frightening facts of this disease is irresponsible. The reader who refuses to give this book to his/her friend who has Lyme disease is doing that friend a grave disservice. Those of us with Lyme disease recognize a factual account as opposed to an "alarmist" point of view. I for one appreciate the TRUTH. This book is well researched and honestly written. EVERYONE should read this book, whether they have Lyme disease or not. Often, persons diagnosed with nervous system disorders, such as MS, or autoimmune disorders, such as Lupus, actually have Lyme disease. I reiterate: THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great review
Really a great review text on the parasitic diseases. It devotes the standard visuals on what the organisms look like on special stains/microscopy which you would expect from a book authored by a pathologist. But it also features a healthy amount of pictures of clinical presentations, and up to date textual information. Clearly this is a work of friendly collaboration and shared academic enthusiasm.

The visuals and text make for better information recall and storage. I also have the Mandell book, considered the infectious disease bible by most among my peers, but I prefer to read a book like parasitic disorders on the train. First of all it's more portable than Mandell. Second, because reading it is almost like doing infectious disease rounds in a tropical country. I.E. fun. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars ITS RELATIVELY HIGH PRICE DRAGS IT DOWN
For the size of this book, the listed price is clearly on the high side. But if that wouldn't deter you, then, get ready to savour a delicious series of well-documented medical information.
This fully revised new edition of the "Tropical Medicine and Parasitology" maintained the tradition of providing succinct clinical information. Its principles, techniques and consistency makes it unique. The textbook is particularly useful for tracking down summarized topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Helpful
When I was diagosed with several allergies my doctor suggested this book. Doctors are often not the best communicators which is why I am glad I had this book as an easy to understand, yet very informative guide. If anyone in your family suffers from allergies I would stronly suggest this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stop sneezing and start living!
I have been diagnosed with a severe allergy problem. After purchasing several books from Amazon and having purused several more at the book store, I can honestly say that this one book is the best written, most complete and scientifically accurate book I have seen for lay people on the subject. It covers everything from how to modify your home environment, to what drugs are available, to what are desensatization shots and what are the results if you take them. It has enabled me to discuss things more intelligently with my doctor. Also I want to warn you there is lot of pseudo-science out there. This book sets things straight about what is the science in allergy diagnosis and treatment and what is just plain nonsense. Read this book before you read anything else. It is quite concise and I found you can jump around and the read the chapters of your choice without being lost.

5-0 out of 5 stars clarifies the mystery of allergies, easy to understand
This is "THE" book my doctor recommended to me. It is written in a most thorough, but extremely easy to understand manner. Its confidence helps allay the fears that come from the mystery of allergies. Interesting, informative and very helpful! -e.s. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative Cookbook
This is a very informative cookbook. The recipes are the best I have found (and this is the third cookbook I have purchased). I wish I had known about using 100% pure vegetable glycerine as a sweetener months ago! Her recipes make you feel like you are eating "real" food again.

It has been my bible over the course of this. I am purchasing CANDIDA, The Silent Epidemic and hope it will help me with figuring out what to do to maintain my healthy lifestyle. 3 CHEERS! for this cookbook!

5-0 out of 5 stars Anti Yeast Diet
This book has been a real help to me in my anti yeast adventure. I have been taking lamisil and following the diet for 3 weeks with great success. It is a roller coaster ride, but more ups than downs. The food is not the most tasty at times, but with so little choice it is hard. A favorite is the Oat and Orange Muffins (which I vary with different flavorings Raspberry is delicious!) -- they are simple to make, moist and freeze well. Also real good are the Rice Ball Cookies. This book is a must for those with this particular need. (ALSO - to a previous reviewer: I BELIEVE STEVIA IS VEGETABLE GLYCERIN AND WATER.)

THE CANDIDA CONTROL COOKBOOK is considered to be the best cookbook on the market for yeast control and is in its 11th year of publication! Best wishes, Gail Burton

4-0 out of 5 stars Glycerine
It is not the brand but the chemical itself that is important.

Chemically, glycerine should be qualified as a sugar alcohol. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies sugar alcohols as carbohydrates. Thus, glycerine is a really a carbohydrate for labeling purposes.

Glycerine is used by the body somewhat differently than are other carbohydrates. To be used as an energy source, glycerine must first be converted to glucose (body sugar) in the liver. After glycerine is converted to body sugar, it then is oxidized as sugar, but the overall process takes longer when compared to other carbohydrates.

Glycerine is a common ingredient in low carb bars, where it is omitted from the carbohydrate count. Glycerine does not react metabolically like a regular carb as it does not raise insulin or blood sugar levels directly. In addition, very little glycerine converts to glucose under normal conditions, so it is, for the purposes of a low carb dieter, justified to omit it from the carb total. Metabolism 1994 Oct: 43 (10):1293-9. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It is much more inclusive than the title suggests
I met the first edition 30 years ago in the U. of Illinois library, when I was in graduate school. Now, a full fledged medical and veterinary parasitologist, I had a second chance and . . . I just had to have it! Not because it was necessary to my work but because I remembered it as a jewel of a book. I hesitated a bit because the price was kind of steep for just a memento. Boy, but what a memento! The tight text and tiny letters are rarely interrupted by illustrations, and these are usually photographs; of only average quality, they are of exceptional content. It does not cover all the comon parasitic infections (the way they treat them, it would take an encyclopedia to do so!) but only the major ones. The survey of each infection, however, goes much farther than one would expect for a book on "wild mammals." It reviews (and references) a large part of the recent literature as it applies to any host; wild, domestic, or human. I found that it quickly gained a place among my favorite references. If you are interested in Parasitology at all, you MUST get it. You can't afford to wait another 30 years for the next edition. ... Read more

Book Description

Hypochondriacs beware-- would you believe the nastiest creatures in the known universe live inside our bodies? Not content to just find a home and produce offspring in our internal space, parasites will drink our blood, eat our cells, and infest our muscles. There is very little that can be said in their favor, with perhaps one exception-- they are truly fascinating!

Fearsome Fauna is a wickedly amusing and startlingly informative look into the secret world of these fascinating creatures. Perhaps the greatest biological success story of all time (there are more kinds of parasites than insects), parasites have found homes in the vast majority of people on earth and have learned to live in their environment without destroying it (usually). For readers who would like to meet these hardworking beasts-- or learn how to avoid them-- Fearsome Fauna tells you everything you always wanted to know about parasites but were too disgusted or terrified to ask.

This book is very well balanced in its representation of parasites and their role in the world in which we live. Book Description

This book is designed primarily as a textbook for graduate and postgraduate courses in Medical, Public Health and Veterinary Entomology. Its uniqueness is that its emphasis is on disease as opposed to arthropods. It includes general discussions of epidemiology, transmission, disease control, vector control and disease surveillance. In addition, it contains chapters oriented towards the many specific arthropod-borne diseases. Furthermore, the book discusses the many direct impacts that parasitic insects have on human and animal health. The arthropods themselves are dealt with in two introductory chapters.

3-0 out of 5 stars NICE ATLAS, CUT-THROAT PRICE
The biggest obstacle in the way of this beautifully illustrated atlas is its rather unreasonable price-tag. Its publisher, (and authors), did overlook the fact that there are lots of moderately priced equivalents out there in the market.
Nevertheless, anyone who goes ahead and purchase this atlas will appreciate its versatile accomplishments. It is very practical, and included high resolution photographs and micrographs.
"Atlas of Human Parasitology" has a unique organization, which enabled it to provide comprehensive laboratory information. Every specimen it portrayed was labelled and analyzed in details. There is complementary taxonomical description in each case. This is a well-compiled atlas, but I still maintain that its price is a great barrier.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good bench atlas
I use this book on the bench in the microbiology department and I find the clarity and amount of photos extreemly useful. The other good features are the lifecycles and the methods present within the book. The book is sturdily bound and printed on high quality paper I would recomend this book to any laboratory, or person interested in parasitology.
