5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent manual for all healthcare provoders
Many clinicians confuse conversation skills (which most people have) with professional communication skills (which most have had little formal training in at all).
The cinicians in our practice have found it helpful in becoming more patient-centered in the goals setting process. The payoff being that patients who are more involved in their goal setiing and treatment planning are usually are more adherent to their treatment plan and demonstrate better outcomes. The book does a good job describing the difference between the traditional clinician-centered interview proceess and the patient-centered interview process and helping us blend the two. It does a particularly good job at giving strategies of how to work with various types of patients, i.e. the reticent, passive, overly talkative etc..
Strong in the fundamentals. Practical.
Highly recommended

Book Description

The CBS television show, "C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation," has captured audiences - and ratings - with its unflinchingly realistic details of forensic science, tools, and technology. This fascinating new book - written by an acclaimed biographer with a master's degree in forensic psychology - goes behind the crime-solving techniques dramatized on the TV show to examine the reality of these cutting-edge procedures.

From DNA typing and ballistics, to bitemark and blood pattern analysis, here are detailed accounts of the actual techniques used in today's crime investigations. Prominent experts in the field offer rare glimpses into cases ranging from missing persons to murder.

For fans of the television show, as well as true crime buffs and science readers - this is the real thing.

"With the mind of a true investigator, Katherine Ramsland demystifies the world of forensics with authentic and vivid detail." (John Douglas)

"Fascinating...this book is a must for anyone who wonders how the real crime-solvers do it." (Michael Palmer, New York Times bestselling author of The Patient.)

3-0 out of 5 stars not bad at all
If you are a serious fan of CSI or if you are fascinated by forensic science then this book might belong in your collection. The author actually has a degree in the subject so she really knows what she's talking about. The good points about the book are: You get a quick overview of how crimes are really solved. It's not by the flashy cop like in the movies it's by the CSI person in the lab. The author liberally sprinkles examples real life crimes and how use or misuse of evidence affected the outcome. For instance she shows how the JonBenet Ramsey crime scene was ruined and why the coroner will never be able to get an approximate time of death. She also mentions the O.J. Simpson case. Poor handling of physical evidence turned the tide there. The only objections I have to the book are the design problems. The brittle paper feels horrible... your visible fingerprints will be left on it... frankly for the cost of this book I think the publisher could've made a better looking product.

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting, but gruesome, in some places, type of book.
This book, part series guide; part primer on forensic science, gives some of the scientific background to C.S.I.. (Crime Scene Investigation) and now, also, C.S.I. Miami, as well as other movies and shows; where science and criminology meet. Gives fairly good explanations, although some are left out, maybe because anyone who watches these shows has heard terms, for example, "bindle" [a piece of paper or some small envelope, used for evidence collection]. Some of the "real life" cases, as contrasted to some of the episodes, are pretty gruesome and not recommended for everyone. Great for fans of the shows [like me] or anyone moderately curious about how some crimes are solved.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is a 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this book tells you everything you need to know about forensics. It is the best science text i have ever read. from the scene to the autopsy table, it has it all. if you like the show CSI and the CSI books by Max Allen Collins, you'll love this! it gives you real life examples, lists , and explanations on every page. it also has an awesome glossary and reference. LOVE IT!!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Might be good to get your teen into reading science
I found this book to be marginal at best. That may have something to do with my education and the amount of reading I have done in real forensics books. It would be a good read for teens interested in a possible career in this field, or for adults whose primary exposure is through the TV series. I'm sure that the writer knows much more than is in this book, and I would like to see a more in-depth coverage written for those who aren't in medicine or law enforcement but who have a genuine interest in the science. If your teen likes the show, it might be an excellent way to get them interested in reading science outside of that dull text from high school.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for board review!
Excellent color pictures, and an excellent way to review path. The questions are tough and the book is broken down by systems. This book goes well with either the Big Robbins or even Stars Review pathology since they are both organized by systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Companion for Any Usmle Review Book
This is a very good test book. It is based on Robbins Pathology books. All pictures and slides are from Robbins books. It contains more than 1000 questions, mostly in clinical vignette format. Questions are very well prepared and reflect the clinical picture of each disease entity very well. Each chapter covers most of the needed items for USMLE Step 1. Answers are not exhaustive, but they are enough. I always recommend the combination of BRS Patholgy and this book as the best pathology source for Step 1.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for USMLE 1
Okay so this book was my primary review book for Path for the Boards I loved the questions and explanations. I used it with First Aid. It has like 1100 questions and in my opinion completely reviews the most impt points in path for you in question format. The questions are very similar to the board in layout with the clinical presentations. Kaplans questions are similar to it but in my opinion this book offers more questions for path and the material is organized for a complete review. Just do like one block/chapter in it per day and read the explanations. This book is your best path review for the exam because its in question format!! My other review books that I liked were. In the Made Ridiculously Series the: Neuroscience, The Anatomy, especially Microbio Made Ridiculously Simple. For pharm and biochem first aid has all you need to know. BRS Physio is also excellent. These were my books hope it helps you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Comprehensive review of Pathology
There are a tremendous amount of questions that encompass the content of Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease. Helpful are the complete discussions of answers and why the wrong answers are wrong--along with references to the page number in Robbins, in case in don't believe them. The questions in this book tend to be from the challenging to ridiculous in terms of difficulty compared with USMLE Pathology questions; however, if you can master these questions, there is no doubt you will do very well on the USMLE or in your Pathology class. Well worth the [money].

4-0 out of 5 stars Robbin's Review of Pathology
This review is excellent for those who are preparing for USMLE Step I. The best part of this book is images and the explanation for them. In USMLE Step I, some questions will test you on similar images. Recommend using this book with the BRS Pathology. ... Read more

Practical Principles of Cytopathology is more than a repository of facts. It offers practical information, useful instruction, and valuable advise that every cytopathologist can use everyday.

I like to call this book "baby DeMay". It's very well organized, great pictures, and a whole lot easier to haul off the shelf than the Big Daddy DeMays. Excellent as a quick reference and/or a study tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars A concise but comprehensive book with great images
This book, like its big brother (The Art and Science of Cytopathology, by the same author), is well written, even fun to read. It includes virtually the entire realm of morphologic cytopathology in a concise, portable format. It is well organized with separate chapters for the Pap smear, fluids and organ systems in some cases and individual organs in others. It even includes a chapter on gonads and a microbiology chapter covering many "bugs" that can be seen in cytologic specimens. The images are of excellent quality (as we have come to expect from Dr. DeMay) and include appropriate examples of specimens stained with Papanicolaou and Diff-Quick methods, in addition to some illustrative H&E histology. This book is an excellent addition to the library of the pathology resident, cytotechnologist and even practicing pathologist for a quick consultation, and I enthusiastically recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars best for Pagana & Pagana
I own a similar reference to this one done by the same authors and is very good but not as good as this one. I have this one available to me in two work places and I'm tempted to buy this for myself. If you need a reference such as this, get this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Qualified usefulness for medical transcription
I had this book recommended to me as a transcription terminology aid. It is very limited in that function. It is obviously a very good book for those who will be performing tests, but not as much so for those of us transcribing the results. It is useful for providing context to help you infer what type of test or range of results you may be listening for, but you will need a book specifically for terminology once you have narrowed it down.

Calidad de papel, encuadernación e ilustraciones son maravillosas. Este volúmen no debe de faltar en la oficina de ningún colega, aunque sea de habla hispana.

It is a versatile manual which every clinician and lab scientist, (including trainees), would value very much.

Book Description

Regarded as the "Bible" of mammalian embryo manipulation techniques since the 1986 publication of the first edition of Manipulating the Mouse Embryo: A Laboratory Manual, the third edition of this essential laboratory resource has now been completely reorganized, rewritten, and updated by a new cast of authors. The result is a compilation of new, cutting–edge protocols that include embryonic stem cell production and genetic manipulation, mouse chimeras, mouse cloning, assisted reproduction strategies (including intracytoplasmic sperm injection and in vitro fertilization), whole embryo culture systems, electroporation, embryo and gamete cryopreservation and rederivation, and gene expression, as well as more extensive background information on the use of these techniques. The "gold standard" techniques for applying recombinant DNA technology to investigations of mammalian embryonic development included in the first two editions of this book are also updated and recast, as is the summary of the current state of understanding of mouse development at the molecular level. This book is the premier authoritative and comprehensive source of technical and theoretical guidance for mouse developmental biologists and geneticists and is an essential resource for newcomers to these fields. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The New Testament?
A definitive summary of mouse development and simple, concise proven protocols. This is the best publication there is for this kind of work. It's much better than the 2nd, ed. I wish it had more of a troubleshooting focus, but I guess if you are in this line of work, you should be able to figure out problems yourself, or query the tg list.... I like how there are alternative strategies mentioned depending on how your lab is equiped (or not). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Roll the Bones and Read the Truth They Cast
For nearly a century the science of forensics has grown from a barely understood art to a marvel of modern science. From development of finger printing in the early 1900's, to DNA gene matching of today, forensic pathology and anthropology have blossomed into the law's best weapons against criminals that stalk our world. In 'Dead Men Do Tell Tales' we enter the world of Dr. William Maples, PhD of the C A Pound Human Identification Center in Gainesville, Florida-an often brutal and ghoulish realm of dismembered corpses, hastily torched cremains of hapless victims or those dumped in septic tanks to rot and putrify in the other detritus of man's remains. Dr. Maples' own study is the field of forensic anthropology-the study of the human skeleton, and this man's expertise in that field has cemented my interest in amateur study of forensics.

Told in the first person, Maples comes across as brilliant and personable, if a little supremely confident in his own abilities as an investigator. And like Stephen Hawking's 'A Brief History of Time', isn't afraid to admit when he has erred. Where the book shines, aside from its plethora of information, is in the presentation of that information-Maples never uses terms that he doesn't explain, knowing full well that the book is going to be read more by laymen like me than a peer within the profession. So do not expect detailed treatises on anatomy, pathology or pages of chemical breakdowns. Instead, Maples presents an easy to understand work that is surprising in its level of detail, and a credit to himself and his co-author, Michael Browning, for making it understandable.

Though it is a book on anthropology, one cannot write about one subject without at least touch on the pathology end, since the two are intimately related. After explaining his own origins from his birth in Dallas, Texas, his schooling and odd jobs he held in order to pay for his college-mostly that of riding shot gun in an ambulance while working for a mortuary as they sped from accident to accident, trying to scoop business away from competing funeral homes. He majored in English, but took a course on anthropology on a lark at the suggestion of his university counsellor. In so doing he met Tom McKern, who impressed Maples with his skill as a teacher, mentoring himself to the older professor.

Past the first chapter we enter Maples' job, past his trapping baboons in Africa in 1960s to his eventual relocation as Gainesville and the C A Pound offices there. Florida, he describes, is a living organism with highways making up its arterial system, and a place where criminals, like blood cells, pass through, dumping their often mutilated cargo of human debris. In many ways I believe he softened the blow in his descriptions of finding the body of man in a septic tank where it had been for over a decade or that of three murdered drug dealers near a golf course who had been executed by fellow criminals then unceremoniously tossed into a pit to be buried. Mere words cannot describe these gruesome atrocities, but he makes it clear that while it doesn't bother him anymore, it does turn even the hardest cop green with nausea.

His affinity with tools, since they are so often used as murder weapons, has led him to collect quite an assortment of hatchets, crow bars, hammers, saws-and could often be found in the hardware department at Sears looking at tools, trying to find the right one that matches the damaged bone. His expertise in this field enabled him to study John Merrick's remains-the Elephant Man of the 19th century, and even to Russia where he examined the skeletonized remains of Tsar Nicholas and his family, almost seventy years after they were murdered by Bolsheviks during the 1917 revolution. All of this experience-almost forty years before his death in 1999, has set Maples in his ways. He possesses a strong, passionate belief that there is true evil in the world, and that somehow the world is better off without certain murderers around. Though this is tempered by his own research into the most humane ways to execute someone.

'Dead Men Do Tell Tales' is a fascinating, enjoyable read-captivating in its insights in forensic pathology and anthropology in a language that everyone can understand. It gives the novice reader in the field a general understanding of the chemical changes our bodies go through as they decompose, the organs and other bodily system are rendered down in the earth-by insects and animals, and how evidence is gleaned off bones-chisel marks, bullet holes, little nicks and scratches that can tell the investigator what tool was used, and a little insight from Maples' point of view of the people who used them. It is a fascinating, engrossing book that anyone with a reasonably strong stomach should be able to enjoy. A fitting testimony to a highly skilled man who is sadly no longer with us. Thank you, Dr. Maples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, Readable, Informative
This is an outstanding book -IF- you can stomach reading about things like insect larvae implanted in human decay. Dr. William Maples (1937-97) was a forensic anthropologist who examined bone and tissue samples to determine a person's age, gender, if they'd given birth, cause of death, etc. Imagine testifying at a murder trial while the killer stares at you. Dr. Maples did, knowing that if the jury acquitted the killer might seek revenge. When historians questioned whether angry slaveholders had secretly poisoned President Zachary Taylor in 1850, they called in Dr. Maples for the answer. Maples also investigated the bones of Russia's murdered Czar Nicholas II and family, in part to determine if their Bolshevik executioners might have spared young Anastasia and Alexei. This book has many such authentic tales.

Maples and co-author Michael Browning wrote personable, easy prose that never loses the reader in jargon. DEAD MEN DO TELL TALES is an excellent read for the non-squeamish.

5-0 out of 5 stars great info
One of the best books on forensic anthropology yet. Dr. William Maples gave first hand experiences of his "odd" job. He also illustrates what a lab looks like, how to identify a victim, and stories of the original cases that started it all. A fabulous book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
Being from Florida and actually living near Gainesville, I knew a lot about the things he talked about in this book. I found it very interesting and loved the case studies. I read it almost non-stop and did get a lot of strange looks from people around me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Readable and Informative
I liked the no-nonesense relationship William Maples had with the dead. Whether he is dispelling myths about worm eaten corpses or explaining the reason for the distinctive smell of death he is both entertaining and informative. I was distressed to hear about his death in 1997 because clearly he is the type of expert that is needed in the field of forensic anthropology, one who knows both the lab work and the courtroom. The best expert in the world is useless in a case if he or she cannot convey their knowledge in a way that a jury will understand.

He also showed an admirable (but at times frustating) concern for the privacy of the dead and their survivors. ... Read more

Book Description

Newly appointed principal research investigators have to recruit, motivate, and lead a research team, manage personnel and institutional responsibilities, and compete for funding, while maintaining the outstanding scientific record that got them their position in the first place. Small wonder, then, that many principal investigators feel ill-prepared. In this book, a successor to her best-selling manual for new recruits to experimental science, At the Bench, Kathy Barker provides a guide for newly appointed leaders of research teams, and those who aspire to that role. With extensive use of interviews and a text enlivened with quotes and real-life examples, Dr. Barker discusses a wide range of management challenges and the skills that promote success. Her book is a unique and much-needed contribution to the literature of science. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for the new professor
I love this book and only wish it was published when I was first starting a faculty position. Definitely a biologist's perspective (and a lab-oriented one at that), but it covers many of the trials and tribulations of starting a new faculty position: setting up a lab, assessing priorities, making hires, managing committees, managing colleagues, etc.

The worst part of the job is often maintaining harmony in the lab (which, of course, we're never taught in graduate school), and Barker has great advice on building or rebuilding lab morale, dealing with lab member disputes, and the dreaded firing process. I recommend this book wholeheartedly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be caught without it!
This book is extremely useful for all levels of scientists. An intresting read that will leave you feeling a whole lot wiser.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding primer to managing a laboratory
Scientific faculty are chosen for their ability to do science; not to manage it. Indeed, many young scientists fail precisely because they are unable to shift from the bench to the office. Kathy Barker's book provides a wealth of information for new investigators. The advice, gleaned from interviews with a great many scientists, from Nobel laureates to those that have failed miserably, provides an outstanding road map for those embarking on this critical new phase of their career. No postdoc will leave my lab without receiving a copy as a parting gift.

1-0 out of 5 stars waste your money on something else
I guess you will only need the trivial advice presented in this book if you lack any common sense or if you should not have become a principial investigator in the first place. I found this book more or less useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for all research lab heads
This is a fantastic book. The author interviewed about a hundred new and seasoned lab leaders, and not only summarizes their advice clearly and succinctly, but also includes lots of anonymous quotations presenting a spectrum of opinions on any particular issue. And the book covers _many_ issues of interest to those setting up a lab, and those who wish to improve the way they run their lab. It focuses mostly on academic labs, but also presents some issues peculiar to industry. It really goes into every detail about people-managing issues.
Each chapter has tens of references to other useful books and articles. Kathy really did her homework. I can say nothing bad about the book. Get it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I would have given it more stars if I could've...
This book is THAT good. It is the most clear and concise book on various pathologies that I have seen since entering PT school a decade ago. It's a huge book that covers every illness one could possibly think of. As a required text for my tDPT program I was a little put off initially by the price but it is well worth the expense. I have used it frequently when a client has presented with symptoms which just didn't match their referral dx. I have also used it with family members and friends who have been diagnosed with serious illnesses and it has been very informative. This should be in every PT's personal library...you can always ask for it on your wishlist! Also, if you have a chance to take a continuing ed course from Ms. Goodman, please do...I had the opportunity last month and she was a very dynamic speaker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pathology:Implications for the physical therapist
A very useful book. Probably the one I consult most often. Great reviews of many conditions/disorders with frequently helpful guidelines for practice. Worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well organized and directly applicable
This text is the most valuable one I own. The information is extremely useful and is written in very understandable language. The best aspect of each description of the Pathology is the "Implications for the PT" that follows each one. These columns break each pathological condition down into what we can and should do in each case, and what we cannot do for each case. An excellent source of information. ... Read more
