Book Description

How the hot new science of forensic ecology is cracking some of the world's toughest criminal cases.

When detectives come upon a murder victim, there's one thing they want to know above all else: When did the victim die? The answer can narrow a group of suspects, make or break an alibi, even assign a name to an unidentified body. But outside the fictional world of murder mysteries, time-of-death determinations have remained infamously elusive, bedeviling criminal investigators throughout history. Armed with an array of high-tech devices and tests, the world's best forensic pathologists are doing their best to shift the balance, but as Jessica Snyder Sachs demonstrates so eloquently in Corpse, this is a case in which nature might just trump technology: Plants, chemicals, and insects found near the body are turning out to be the fiercest weapons in our crime-fighting arsenal. In this highly original book, Sachs accompanies an eccentric group of entomologists, anthropologists, biochemists, and botanists--a new kind of biological "Mod Squad"--on some of their grisliest, most intractable cases. She also takes us into the courtroom, where "post-O.J." forensic science as a whole is coming under fire and the new multidisciplinary art of forensic ecology is struggling to establish its credibility. Corpse is the fascinating story of the 2000year search to pinpoint time of death. It is also the terrible and beautiful story of what happens to our bodies when we die. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "We know WHO killed Cock Robin..., but WHEN did he die?"
"Corpse: Nature, Forensics, and the Struggle to Pinpoint Time of Death" by Jessica Snyder Sachs, ISBN 0-7382-0336-X (hardcover). Perseus Publishing 2001 is a 270 page discourse (including 10 page index) written by a seasoned freelance science journalist. Sachs provides us with the historical interest in and the subsequent development of a multitude of devises used to arrive at the best 'Time Of Death' (TOD = Ger. Death) that ofttimes may reveal the why, where, when, whom (and whom not) of an unexplained death.

Sachs proffers physician Antistius of Rome as the first forensic 'pathologist' (mass murder plot on Julius Caesar in 44 B.C.), reviews the classic triad of rigor, algor, and livor mortis (reliability generally limited to 48 hours post death), and discusses ongoing search for those time markers which may critically span hours, days, weeks, months, years and decades using analyses of vitreous humor, cadaver impedance, and the singly and combined forensics of entomology, botany, and anthropology with a discussion of the "Bugs, Bones, and Botany" death-investigation workshops for cops and coroners devised by Byrd and Hall by the late 1990's.

Sachs examines the more recent pursuits to pinpopint time of death by probing and quantifying specific insect (e.g. Diptera) and plant DNA profiles, cadaver soil leachates, aroma patterns, relative ratios of amino acids and degradation product assays (e.g. cadaverine, putrescine, GHB and GABA) of decomposed flesh. A shrewdly-written succint but highly informative must read inquiry for those professing to be informed on 'Time of Death'. The price is right and I'd suggest the hardcover edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not For the Squeamish
"Corpse" is nauseating on two counts. First, it includes grisly details of murders so heinous they will haunt your waking hours, if not your nightmares. Second, it describes step-by-step, many times, exactly what happens to a rotting corpse. If you are unaccustomed to reading or thinking about such things on a regular basis, it will turn your stomach.

Despite my disgust for the subject matter, I found the book hard to put down. It was entertaining to read about how experts in various academic fields--entomology, anthropology, and botany--have been recruited for time-of-death determinations. Some of these engaging personalities became the first forensic ecologists. The book describes some of their research projects as well as the crimes they helped solve. Although "Corpse" gives center stage to the entomologists and anthropologists, the three chapters near the end about botany and chemistry show the reader that these lines of research are equally credible and promising.

I didn't really know anything about this subject before reading the book, and now I know almost too much about it for my own peace of mind. I find myself remembering all the crime scenes I've ever read about or seen in movies, and critiquing them in light of what I've just read. In summary, "Corpse" is fascinating, memorable, and informative, but definitely not for the squeamish.

4-0 out of 5 stars fabulous anthology of forensic ecology
reading Corpse was a joy. having read books by nearly all of the scientists she discussed, i felt privy to a fascinating universe of emerging death science. for those with a genuine interest in death examination, i definately reccommend reading books such as bill bass's Death's Acre and m. lee goff's A Fly For the Prosecution to supplement your knowledge. for other who would much rather read a simple overview, Corpse will do just fine. well written and not sensationalist, Corpse is a great introduction to forensic ecology.

5-0 out of 5 stars all we are is dust in the wind ...
Corpse is grisly, graphic reading. As one reader remarked, it is certainly not for the squeamish, as Sachs describes week by week what happens to our bodies as we gradually decompose. The book is much more than a mere cataloguing of which insects devour us in which order, though. At the root of the book is the important question of determing time since death - critical in the correct prosection of murder crimes.

I found the details fascinating of how forensic scientists (entomologists, anthropologists and even microbiologists) are learning more about the decompostion, dessication and eventual disintegration of human bodies. I was similarly riveted to the numerous stories of how the science was evolving and gradually coming into use in the courtroom.

The book is certainly not for everyone, and be prepared for the odd sideways glances from those who see you reading it. But it is a guilty pleasure (pardon the pun) for those who have the guts (sorry, had to do it) to read it through. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars terrific read
this amazing book is well written, holds your attention and teaches you the ugly reality of death investigation. brutally raw and descriptive - not for weak stomachs - a page turner to the end. so many lessons in this book - the post mortem clocks of livor, algor and rigor mortis, the introduction of natural forensics, the history of the medicocriminal entomologist - it's all in here. centuries of historical cases all leading up to today and the new advances that forensic science is making in determining the time of death. i highly, highly reccomend this book to anyone that wants a glimpse of what forensic science really is ... COLOR ATLAS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT is a clinical resource for practitioners who assess and treat sexually assaulted adolescents and adults. The atlas presents color photographs of injuries of the internal and external genitalia, anus, and mouth, which are magnified for distinct visualization of the injury, providing critical visual aid to the accurate physical diagnosis of sexual abuse. Also included are many photographs of normal anatomy of the adult genitalia, as well as typical variations that may be found, to contrast with the photos of sexual assault victims. The text provides findings in consensual intercourse, which are critical for comparison to assault injury. There is a detailed description of the assessment of the sexually assaulted individual, including the physical and emotional aspects. Rape trauma syndrome is included. Four actual case studies of sexual assault victims are presented, along with photographs of their injuries. ... Read more

This book is very complete, and has many pictures describing a variety of situations. Highly recommended.

You should also consider "Sexual Assault: The Medical-Legal Examination". This book has more information on the psychology of the assailant and the assailed, and on filling out legal forms during examination, but "Color Atlas" has more pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential resource book
My forensic nurse colleagues have provided an outstanding resource for those of us who perform sexual assault exams and forensic evidence collection. The photographic documentation of cases and information in the Color Atlas have proved invaluable to me as a sexual assault nurse examiner. 2-0 out of 5 stars A dissenting opinion....
In order to temper the unrestrained exuberance of the former reviews, I think it is appropriate to point out what I believe are a couple of major shortcomings of this book.

Yes the photography is very good. However, the paper it is printed on is not so good. Don't try underlining any of the text with a pen or pencil; the line will be transferred to the following page. The thin paper combined with the ink on the opposite side forms a tracing paper when you mark on the page. For a price that completely wrecks a hundred dollar bill, I think the customer deserves more. Mr. White is surely wagging his vestigial tail all the way to the bank.

Most importantly, the descriptive sections of the text are very brief, with many bone features ignored. The Running Press reprint of the 1901 edition of Gray's Anatomy has a much more thorough (and much much cheaper) text of bone anatomy, although many of its formerly great illustrations have been reduced to dark blots (evidently in an effort to make the text more legible). In White's book, I would have preferred that seemingly precious text space be used for description of anatomy rather than the author spinning his (and academia's) fairy tales of how fish turned into men.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is an excellent source for information on learning the bones, how to side them, and many other interesting aspects of osteology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete and concise course
This is quite possibly the most useful book I have ever bought. "Human Osteology" is clear and complete. The photos and diagrams are clear and complete. The text is clear and complete. I have used this book in three separate classes and it has proved invaluable to me all three times.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best textbooks I've owned
Two words: wonderfully illustrated. They could use this book for a class on lab photography.

I chose this book over other optional texts available for a forensic anthropology class, and I believe it was by far the best at this level. Like others have said, if you need to know the small visual differences between two similar landmarks, this is the one.

Also, don't sell it back once you're done. You'll be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide
This book is excellent for anyone interested in Forensic Science. Just as the synopsis says this brings to light the reality of forensics as a science rather than psychology. It is in depth but clear and easy to understand - it even has a huge glossary of terms at the rear with the words highlighted in the chapters for easy acess to their meanings. It will be an invaluable help to people with an interest in forensic science. As this book says, it's an introduction on "scientific and investigative techniques" but don't be fooled, the detail is immense and the book is superbly laid out. Clear diagrams, photos and graphs are well placed to help the reader further understand what they are taking in. The text it's self is easy to follow and friendly to read and the concepts are well explained. What I especially like about this book are the questions at the end of each section (nothing formidable) and the case studies and examples that further help to emphasize the points being put across. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A little book that stands by itself
This is a little book I've been using since day one at work, and let me say it is simply the most practical reference I had ever bought. It has a very concise overview of the principles underlying any diagnosis, an overview of some critical values, a pathologist incline clasification in the book (more disease oriented), and a super complete list of causes that may provoque the anomalies detected and outlined in this book. All in a minute consultation, really fast and easy to use. Simply very, very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interpretation of Diagnostic Tests
I, too, have been using this reference for several years. I consider it to be one of the five most useful medical books on my shelf. This is probably the only book I feel the need to purchase every time there is an updated edition. I strongly recommend it for medical students, residents, midlevel providers and practicing physicians. It is a core reference in medical board review. It may also be of value for nursing staff in the hospital or clinic setting, especially for critical care nurses, or for anyone who is motivated to learn about medical diagnosis. The book is less likely to be useful to patients and their families, due to its highly technical nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interpretation of Diagnostic Tests
An indispensable guide. Thorough and complete. Very helpful both in determining what tests to order, and how to interpret test results; especially helpful for the less common and more esoteric tests.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most complete, handy reference of lab tests ever written
I have been using this reference for several years. I can't practice medicine without it. I have made many esoteric diagnoses with it. It is extremely helpful whenever I have abnormal lab values, which do not seem to make sense at the time. Other lab references pale in comparison. Not only are abnormal labs explained, but the disease processes as well. I really like the way the book divides the elevated lab value from the decreased lab value, with their respective etiologies. An essential, excellent book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A tour de force
This book is the eight edition of a venerable work first written in 1965 by the great Elmer DeGowin, MD. Dr. DeGowin was a professor of medicine at the University of Iowa, and contributed immensely to research in transfusion medicine. Perhaps because of this, he is commonly remembered today as a hematologist, but this specialist designation, while recognizing his obvious expertise in this area of medicine, does not do justice to Dr. DeGowin's eclectic interest in migraine, trauma, thyroid disorders and many other areas of internal medicine. He was in his time the broadly trained master clinician.

This work may be seen as the culmination of his efforts as an educator of medical students in the profoundly important (and currently woefully neglected) area of clinical diagnosis. When Elmer died in 1980, the task of periodically bringing the book up to date fell to his son Richard Louis DeGowin, also of UI, up until the seventh edition published in 2000. With RL DeGowin himself now emeritus professor, editorship of the text for this newest 8th edition are in the capable hands of Richard LeBlond and Don Brown, professors of medicine at UI.

The work's subtitle is an accurate description of its aims: a "complete guide to assessment, examination, and differential diagnosis". One of the few textbooks of bedside clinical diagnosis produced in handbook format, it should nevertheless not be presumed to be incomplete - it is 1077 pages long! (An example of what an excellent publishing effort can do with medical handbooks - produce a thorough, exhaustive compendium in a size that will fit into a coat pocket). This apparent (and welcome) paradox - so much information written and produced so well that it is the size of a handbook - is not the only noteworthy feature of this work.

There are 18 chapters. Three introductory chapters on the diagnostic examination, the history and medical record, and an outline screening examination are followed by the main body of the work, focused chapters on the examination of all anatomic regions. Two final chapters explain the principles of diagnostic testing and adduce examples of common laboratory tests. There is a valuable chapter on the pre-operative assessment of a patient.

The real gem here however is the heart of the book - the detailed chapters on the examination of all the organ systems. In an age when the beauty, elegance, and sheer value of the clinical examination is increasingly underappreciated, DeGowin's is an affirmation of its central importance. In it you will not learn simply that there are such things as, for example, heart sounds and murmurs. You will learn what precisely they are, their semiophysiology, their meaning, what happens to them in disease. Knowledge, especially when disseminated by an erudite teacher, is inspiring. You will be inspired not to inanely parrot "S1, S2 present, no S3, S4, murmur"; rather you will seek out the gallop, or the Bruit de Canon, or perhaps even the Bruit de Diable. Splits, reversed splits, snaps, pericardial knocks, Austin Flint murmurs, pulsus tardus et parvus, pulsus paradoxus, alternans... they are all here, taught patiently, explained clearly. Many of the beautiful figures were inked first by Elmer DeGowin, in simple line diagrams, 40 years ago. They do much to make things clearer.

To given an example of the depth of the text, consider the subtopics in one subsection: heart murmurs. This is classified into systolic and diastolic, after the usual fashion. With respect to systolic murmurs, DeGowin explains the following: under basal systolic murmurs, we have aortic stenosis, supravalvular AS, Idiopathic Hypertrophic Subaortic Stenosis, pulmonic stenosis, infundibular PS, ASD at the ostium secundum, ASD from persisten ostium primum, coarctation of aorta, thoracic outlet bruit, HTN/atherosclerotic; under midprecordial systolic murmurs, VSD and tricuspid insufficiency; under apical systolic murmurs, mitral insuff and mitral valve prolapse; and under abrupt systolic murmurs, rupture of interventricular septum, papillary muscle or chordae tendinae. EACH of these is explained in two parts: the pathophysiology, and the clinical features of the murmur and associated findings. This is not a mere book of lists.

The breadth is as excellent as the depth. Every type of physical examination you can think of is represented; the skin, lymphatics, the endocrine system, the head and neck, breasts, genitals, lungs, heart, vessels, liver, spleen, kidneys, musculoskeletal, neurological, even the fingernails... all explained in devoted detail.

The new editor has done a first-rate job and tightened up some of the chapters, reorganizing material to make it easier to find topics. The one thing people used to complain about with DeGowin's was that while it was comprehensive, the organization made it difficult to use. This is no longer a problem, and the excellent use of color type and varying fonts is a plus. Each chapter is organized in a uniform fashion: first, an overview of the system under consideration, then superficial and deep anatomy, third the method of examination, fourth the symptom-complexes the patient may present with, fifth the physical signs that may be elicited, and finally syndromes. These final sections in each chapter have explanations of pathophysiology, followed by extensive differentials. The book is thoroughly cross-referenced.

A common "justification" for the indifference many residents and medical students display toward thorough clinical exams is that signs aren't common these days, so we might as well not read about them or seek them. I think this is not true. How well an examination is conducted is a function of knowledge, skill and motivation. When there is no knowledge of methods and signs, they will simply not be elicited. Even a medical student, properly taught and motivated, can do an excellent job at diagnosis. In my final year of med school, after I had placed an enormous effort into learning and practising bedside diagnosis, I remember repeatedly coming up with diagnoses and findings others (much senior to me) had missed. This was only because I would actively look for them (and I knew about them), not because of anything special.

DeGowin's Diagnostic Examination is a masterpiece, one of the two greatest American works on clinical diagnosis in the last half- century. Every medical student worth the name should read it, and ponder its wisdom.

4-0 out of 5 stars your little trusted friend
During my practice whenever I needed to consult it, it gave me information about the symptoms and diseases. 2-0 out of 5 stars not for Mac users!
I purchased this book mainly for the CD test. Too bad for me that nowhere in the reviews does it mention that it can't be used in a Mac! I don't really care for the format of the questions, either - I've purchased much better review guides; especially the CLS Review by Harr (of course, you can't use it's floppy in a Mac, either - that's why I wasted my money on another book) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST desk reference available for massage therapists
I've only had the book a week and I've used it to reference two clients already. It is loaded with useful photos and is fast and easy to use. The little traffic light icon tells you immediately if you can do a massage (green), can't do a massage (red), or if you need to read for more info (yellow). Why hasn't someone thought of this before? Thank you Ms. Salvo! Worth twice the price and its HARDCOVER!!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars clinical lab scientist
good source of information, helps alot in taking the board exam for clinical lab scientist,it's a must to have it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Review Book....But No CD-ROM :(
This is a really great book to review for the Registry. There are well over 1000+ questions in this book. It covers the seven majors areas of Clinical Science. Those areas are Hematology, Immunology, Immunohematology, Clinical Chemistry, Body Fluids, and Microbiology. The thing I found really neat about this book was that it gave detailed explanations at the end of each review section. So you got the opportunity to learn a little something extra even if you did got the question right.

My only complaint about this book is the disk. I could'nt use it because I have a CD-ROM drive. Don't they know that the majority of computers that are coming out today have CD-ROM drives? I hope that the latest version of this book comes with a CD-ROM....because disks are just so late 20th century! :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Laboratory Science Review
This is a great book for review purposes. It covered each topic completely. The only thing I was disappointed in was the disk that came with it. It was 100 questions and didn't give you the answers till you completed the enire thing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Laboratory Science
I think this is an excellent resource for MLS majors. The expinations given with the answers help in understanding any cloudy areas within the subject of the questions. I was a bit disappointed in the CD. I was hoping it would be more like the book in giving explinations for questions, but it only provides a 100 question mock exam. Don't get me wrong, this was definately worth the price paid for such a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference and preparation guide for Registry !
I just finished my MLT program this year. I purchased this guide in preparation for my national registry exam this summer. The format was easy to follow with its answers and explanations for those answers. After reviewing this material, I feel more prepared to PASS registry. I find this book to be an EXCELLENT preparation guide for Registry examination ! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and concise reference
I find myself referencing this paperback over and over again for both personal and professional help. The information is organized and written in a very simple, easy to locate, and understandable fashion. It is very handy to have on your shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Make it an addition to your medical library
Auseful tool to find normal values and aceptable levels of every element of body fluids. Abrief desciption of each test is followed by lists of medical conditions that may influence the result. The design of professional considerations add more value to this book, since abnormal results not necessarily reflect abnormal medical conditions, they may as well come from various mistakes when preparing or handling the test, or influenced by the patient's previous medications. The text is well organized with plain English. A very useful book that I'd like to recommend it to every medical student. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
This is definitively one of the best Clinical Chemistry books I know. At work I routinely need to consult information and this makes a great reference book to search for in depth explanations. Now, I don't feel this would be good for a student, I feel this book is a little dense and treats some issues in such a way that might be a little intricate for the first contact with them. I believe you need some practical work experience to really take all the juice out of it, though I don't mean I'm not recommending it to students. This is a great book to anyone, the only thing is I don't concieve it as a texbook (for this I'll better recommend Kaplan & Pesce "Clinical Chemistry", which is an easier reading while not compromising much depth).

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing to rave about
I used this text for a pathology undergraduate course, along with a more complex text (Concise Pathology by Lange). The Mulvihill text did not solidify the concepts; rather, it skimmed over the topics in a cursory manner without giving each topic the attention it needs. A good book for someone with little background in the health sciences, but not enough for anyone who needs something more comprehensive. One plus in this book are the charts at the end of each chapter, which categorize diseases by signs and symptoms, treatment, etc. ... Read more
