5-0 out of 5 stars Review of The Criminal Mind
Writer's Digest Books' The Criminal Mind by Katherine Ramsland is an insightful tool for the serious crime writer. It is more intellectual than most self-help writing books and can provide interesting ideas for fleshing out characters. It is deeply rooted in psychological theory and that makes it an exceptionally interesting read. Complex topics are explained in layman's terms. It is nice to have a writing guide by such a talented writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference tool for crime/fiction writer
The Criminal Mind: A Writer's Guide to Forensic Psychology is an excellent reference tool for any crime or fiction writer who wants to write a believable story involving elements of criminal behavior and those who investigate and treat individuals who display this behavior. Katherine Ramsland, Ph.D., is herself a forensic psychologist and the author of fourteen previous nonfiction books. She uses a mixture of fiction and fact to describe the fundamentals of forensic psychology. She stresses the importance of keeping characters and their behavior realistic to an extent. By knowing how your character would really behave, Ramsland suggests that the writer can add credibility to both characters and plot of the crime, mystery or suspense novel.

Ramsland includes the liberal use of notorious examples from pop culture and media to illustrate various aspects of forensic psychology. From brief descriptions of individual assessment tools, to court testimony and strategy, she gives the writer/researcher answers to her many questions. Ramsland uses numerous colorful examples to illustrate her points, from real-life serial killers Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Daumer, to popular TV shows like "Law and Order" and the novels of Patricia Cornwell (The Body Farm) and Thomas Harris (Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal).

The Criminal Mind is written in clear, informal language, even given the necessary legal, forensic and psychological jargon defined throughout the book. This book is a must-have guide to help writers create truly human "bad guys" as well as believable mental health professionals. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I am a PA licensed Funeral Director/Embalmer. I studied at NCACC. Most of my embalming training was through hands on experience, the rest through Xerox copies of outdated texts. Also, there was the 1st edition of this book. I only found it useful to study the history section. This new version has not improved at all. This book covers the legal requirements and BORES you to "death", but it is not very practicle for embalming techniques. The title is very misleading. The Theory & Practice Sections you can rip out of the book. I reiterate: This book is only good for the History of Embalming (& perhaps some of the federal requirements too). If you want a good embalming text, ask your local funeral director to Xerox his old embalming book for you --just make sure It's not by Mayer!

5-0 out of 5 stars The top textbook for Funeral Services
Upon reading the standard textbook for Funeral Services in Canada I wasn't satisfied with the large volume of text involved so I turned to Mayer's Theory History and Practice. This book is an excellent resource for students and professionals in the Funeral Services field. There are alot of visual representations and I found it to be very useful in helping with the 'hands on approach' needed to help perfect the embalming process. I hope more students and professionals start using this book as a reference.

This book is not for the average individual interested in gore.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY MESMERIZING BODY OF WORK!
Since I am not a funeral director but have been interested in the profession (I used to work with friends on the east coast), I could not put the book down because it captured and sustained my interest. As a novice reader to the mortuary profession, I could not believe how much technical information you had to know. It is almost like becoming a physician. Although the diagrams/pictures were not in color, just having them spiked and fueled my interest -- with actual embalming techniques.

Finally, my favorite unit was on embalming instruments. I highly respect morticians because of the administrative, logistical, creative, and artistic so-called 'hats' they must wear in order to do a professional service!

3-0 out of 5 stars Amusing Topic, Dull Style
Ths tyle that this book was written in is pretty dran boring, but then again, it is a textbook, and they're supposed to be dull, I reckon. The section on the history of embalming is a bit sparse and the legal requirements will put one to sleep, but the actual theory and practice I found to be quite informative, if somewhat out-of-date. I wish the pictures were in colour (at least some of them) as the balck-and-white rendering defeats the purpose of some of them; for example, we are shown an example of someone who died from carbon monoxide poisoning in which the extremitieas are shown to be bright red -- a characteristic of that type of death -- and the picture illustrating this is not in colour, so one really does not get any additional information from it. There are chapters on dealing with "unusual" deaths -- hanging, refrigeration, poisoning, etc., positioning problems, the methods of aspirating the various sections of the body, organ and tissue donors, care of the autopsied body, embalming of infants and those in various stages of decomposition and most other relevant topics, but I would hate for this to be one's only source -- there are better texts available and of course nothing can beat hands-on experience. This may be a good place for an interested party to start, but I think a more modern text would be in order for actual funeral practice.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book is OUTDATED!!!!
This book has no Idea How and what we are doing today in the FASTPACE world of CORPORATE Embalming!!! I have no time to complete the mentioned tasks in the book. The book outlines to many detailed items that are "REQUIRED" When I went to school I hardly Cracked this Book, I learned more in the previous 3 years BEFORE school than I learned from this JOKE of a book!!! Maybe MR. Mayer can teach all those Techniques at P.I.M.S. but on the westcoast @ San FRAN. and Cyprees(I attended S.F. for 1 semester and Cypress for 2) it does not cut it and the techniques are BOGUS!!!! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Superficial and mediocre
This book has a superficial review of issues in forensic psychology. Perhaps useful for a student in an initial review of the subject, it lacks any depth for the practitioner who is generalizing skills into specific areas in the forensic domain. I am sure there are more useful and valuable books for the practitioner.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
The book was just okay as a very basic overview, but I was disappointed. A very superificial overview of each topic that was presented, much was redundant from other texts. For example, how many times can one read about using the MMPI-2 in forensic assessments. Furthermore, the cover said that the book covered newer malingering instruments, such as the MPS. However, the coverage of the MPS was about 7 lines and pretty useless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Abbreviation overload
Of course Sternberg is one of the leading sources of general surgical pathology information and the book lives up to its reputation with adequate discussions of each topic with relatively good microscopic descriptions and information on special stains (unlike the new Rosai/Ackerman). However, consistently, he gives the name of an entity in one place in the books/volumes and then every where else it is only reffered to by its abbreviation. So now if you don't remember the abbreviation you have to hunt for it ealier in the chapter or in other chapters all together. And of course the abbreviation is not in the glossary nor is there a seperate index of abbreviations. I find that this adds unnecessary distractions and time to what should be smooth studying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Usual excellent surgical pathology reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Best book on the subject, goes hand-in-hand with Guyton's book. Common pathologies of each system or organ is described sometimes with nice colored pictures. Explanations are very simple and easy to understand. Each system is first explained in terms of structure and physiology and than followings chapters in that section takes on pathologies of the system or its components, number of chapters depending on the system complexity. It is a perfect book for pathology or parallel book with physiology to understand physiology with its applications.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's not so bad if you know what you're getting into.
I'm glad that you've come. It shows that you believe in looking ahead and being prepared. A little bit of that action would have saved General Custer and his men a whole lotta' headache. With a bit of luck, reading this review will do the same for you. Hopefully (because you'll be ready for what's coming), by the time you finish this book you won't want to put a bullet through your head and forcibly remove your own scalp (in that order). My initial reaction to the book wasn't as bad as it might be for others (I have a high tolerance for pain and boredom), however I would like to do my best to prevent any Dubliners-induced tragedies. I will admit, when I first read this book I did not enjoy it at all. I don't know about you folks, but I enjoy a book where at least some of the characters have at least one redeeming quality. You're hard up to find so sweet a gem in this anthology. From open to close the reader is bombarded with every class of loser imaginable. If it's not some gutless nobody without the heart to even attempt to go after his dreams, it's a drunk who beats his children. Of course there was that one part where Ransom got into a fistfight with Satan-oh, wait. That was from a book I enjoyed (C.S. Lewis's Perelandra-check it out). Let's not get confused about this. Saying that I did not enjoy the book does not imply that I do not like it. Often in life, things look entirely different in retrospect. Dubliners is one of those things. James Joyce wrote this book at about the time he expatriated. There have to be some pretty powerful feelings behind a decision to leave one's own country. In this book you get a glimpse of what he saw, the things that he dealt with everyday. You see the world that he put up with, and you see it through his eyes. In that regard, this is one of the most powerful pieces produced in recent times. Nevertheless, I write book reviews with people like my dad in mind. If it gets too real or hits too close to home, he won't take it. You can visualize it like this: Quigley Down Under = Good; Dingoes Ate My Baby = Bad. If he doesn't get a huge kick out of it, he will have nothing to do with it. So, if you're looking for huge explosions, karate chops, or campfire flatulence, this is not the book for you. On the other hand, if you like 'em slow, powerful, subtle, and poignant (and moderately depressing-cough, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, cough) Dubliners is your sack of oats, Mr. Ed. I find myself caught in the middle of the two types: which means that if it can blow up and move me at the same time, I'm sold-kinda' like a Tchaikovsky finale. The book is classic-quality literature; I won't deny that. I'm just saying that it's not for everyone. It's definitely not my dad's cup of tea (technically, nothing is his 'cup of tea.' He won't touch the stuff. He says it makes him gassy-but I digress).

5-0 out of 5 stars disease at it's best
As a graduating student in Homoeopathic medicine this is without a doubt the best general book I have read so far in this field. It uses a great variation of diagrams, charts, pictures and text, thus allowing for differing styles of absorption. It's subjct headings are broken into logical chapters and the recent addition of chapters for infant and elderly pathology is a fine improvement. The text is friendly and well written but remains professional. It also come with an A drive disk carrying a basic exam based round the books content. This is the first book I would recommend to students starting in this field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for FPGEE
I found this book very helpful for my Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination. It has covered a lot of important topics in one book. I recommend this book for licensure examination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
This book is a Godsend! I was given the opportunity to write the Evaluation Exam for the PEBC in Canada and I had no idea where I was going to get all the information I needed to study. This book is really a 'Comprehensive Review' of what was done at University (and sometimes, what was NOT done too!). There are a few errors in the text which you should keep in mind (don't accept everything as truth without questioning statements occasionally. If you are wide awake, you will spot them. All in all, a brilliant book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Graduate Nursing Student
I found the book vague and unclear. It was recommended as a "reference" book for a graduate level pathophysiology course and it was the first book I returned. There are several other books on pathophysiology that are on the market for about the same price or a bit more that are MUCH more thorough and useful for undergraduate, graduate or medical student reference. I would NOT recommend this book for anyone looking at any type of indepth medical information.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very confusing book for USMLE prep
Hi there first of all I would like to say that I am from Brazil, Recife, Pernambuco. I went to a university called UPE, FESP which is in the north east part of Brazil. I bought this book because I thought that it would complement BRS pathology'
But it really didn't so as I thought that it would;
I mean it does but its like discussing too much one some points so its just not really a good book for the USMLE step1 prep; I was actually led to think that because of something I had read on the first aid book that said that '
Really did not like the book at all for the usmle prep. Although you can see that it's a very well made book and they put their hearts into making it but it's just not good enough for the boards.
It's not serving me any good I barely opened it since I bought it and I got their latest edition it was sort of a waste of money for me' I think that this book might be of value for the students at UCSF that are taking classes on introduction to medicine or something like that'
But for the usmle? Forget it'!!!
It's really confusing, and there are no simple index for a particular disease, meaning If you look for something in specific it will be related with some many things that you wont see it right there; there won't be simple diseases listed there for you to look at like that'
Every time I go look for something its not there or it's in contest with something else makes you loose so much time looking at it to find it' It's a very good book but not to be used as a complement to BRS pathology unless you're taking the class.
Hope that this was of help to some of you'
Dr.Claudio A.G.Monteiro Filho.

Book Description

Ion channels are membrane proteins that act as gated pathways for the movement of ions across cell membranes. They play essential roles in the physiology of all cells. In recent years, an ever-increasing number of human and animal diseases have been found to result from defects in ion channel function. Most of these diseases arise from mutations in the genes encoding ion channel proteins, and they are now referred to as the channelopathies.
Ion Channels and Disease provides an informative and up-to-date account of our present understanding of ion channels and the molecular basis of ion channel diseases. It includes a basic introduction to the relevant aspects of molecular biology and biophysics and a brief description of the principal methods used to study channelopathies. For each channel, the relationship between its molecular structure and its functional properties is discussed and ways in which genetic mutations produce the disease phenotype are considered.
This book is intended for research workers and clinicians, as well as graduates and advanced undergraduates. The text is clear and lively and assumes little knowledge, yet it takes the reader to frontiers of what is currently known about this most exciting and medically important area of physiology.

Key Features
* Introduces the relevant aspects of molecular biology and biophysics
* Describes the principal methods used to study channelopathies
* Considers single classes of ion channels with summaries of the physiological role, subunit composition, molecular structure and chromosomal location, plus the relationship between channel structure and function
* Looks at those diseases associated with defective channel structures and regulation, including mutations affecting channel function and to what extent this change in channel function can account for the clinical phenotype

5-0 out of 5 stars The answer is in here ...and here is the question:
The author has a splendid writing gift, and she has produced a broad and wonderfully clear survey of the state of the art in this vigorous field. For a detailed summary of what you will find in the book, check the editorial review (above) from the New England Journal of Medicine.

It seems to me the book might well be read in the context of two other important books in this field: One is Bertil Hille's classic, "Ionic Channels of Excitable Membranes." As a science gathers momentum (and this one is certainly surging) we tend to lose track of what is known and what is simply assumed. Hille's book will fill in some blanks at the fundamental level - and show you exactly where the underlying assumptions are in this science. If you are at all skeptical, and of course you should be, you will like Hille's calm precision and care.

The other background book is Spikes, by Rieke et al. The implication of Spikes is that Adrian was wrong and that, therefore, all of us have been wrong about what nerves actually do - and wrong since 1926. The authors put this rather more diplomatically than I have, but there it is: Adrian wrong.

Spikes summarize evidence accumulated since about 1993 that a single nerve impulse, all by itself, can somehow convey information to the brain. This shocking news will have to be either explained or explained away in terms of the biochemical machinery of the neuron. The current explanation (which is based on precise arrival timing) would seem to rely upon the physiological equivalent of a quartz crystal, um, a device we don't often come across in biochemistry.

It would be my guess that a better understanding of ion channels will point to a more biologically realistic solution. And a new and better picture of how the neuron works.

Ion Channels and Disease is the most current and broadest survey of the subject. The key to the problem is probably in here somewhere, or is referenced here, and is waiting to be discovered. I would pay particular attention to any type of evidence for linkage, structure or signaling between "individual" channels. Linkage between discrete trans-membrane ion channels could create a longitudinal channel running the length of the nerve, probably many of them. A multi-channel axon - a cable rather than a wire -- would be one possible solution to the new mystery of how a single impulse can be freighted with graded information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Compendium of Channelopathies
This is a fantastic book for anybody interested in ion channels or molecular medicine. If you happen to be a graduate student preparing for an exam in the field - this is your salvation! Personally, I read it with enormous delight. What a great compendium of this fascinating, quickly growing field! The style is very elegant, everything is lucid, the concepts come through crystal-clear. This was certainly an enormous amount of work and the book will be helpful to many in the field - for brushing up on channels that you don't work on, for checking things quickly, for teaching, and just for fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars The very first book of a kind
This is really a landmark achievment to write such a good book in such a way, understandable .

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! Essential reading in modern molecular medicine
This is a lucid discussion of the role of ion channels in disease. It begins with a wonderful introduction to molecular biology and physiology of ion channels suitable for neophyte as well as the seasoned investigator. Then individual ion and ligand gated channels are discussed in individual chapters. After the basic properties of each channel are introduced, diseases of the channels are discussed. ... Read more

Book Description

Between August 1918 and March 1919 the Spanish influenza spread worldwide, claiming over 25 million lives, more people than those perished in the fighting of the First World War.It proved fatal to at least a half-million Americans.Yet, the Spanish flu pandemic is largely forgotten today. In this vivid narrative, Alfred W. Crosby recounts the course of the pandemic during the panic-stricken months of 1918 and 1919, measures its impact on American society, and probes the curious loss of national memory of this cataclysmic event. In a new edition, with a new preface discussing the recent outbreaks of diseases, including the Asian flu and the SARS epidemic, America's Forgotten Pandemic remains both prescient and relevant.Alfred W. Crosby is a Professor Emeritus in American Studies, History and Geography at the University of Texas at Austin, where he taught for over 20 years. His previous books include Throwing Fire (Cambrige, 2002), the Measure of Reality (Cambridge, 1997) and Ecological Imperialism (cambridge, 1986).Ecological Imperialism was the winner of the 1986 Phi Beta Kappa book prize. The Measure of Reality was chosen by the Los Angeles Times as one of the 100 most important books of 1997. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Caught Between a History of the Era and of the Flu
Why did the Spanish flu kill 25 million people worldwide? Why did it kill those in the prime of life more efficiently than the usual flu victims, the very young or the very old? Where did it go after its nine month run through the world in 1918-1919? Can it strike again? Why has it been largely forgotten by historians? Engaging questions all, and Alfred Crosby asks them and to a greater or lesser extent seeks to answer them. Still, this book is less than it could be, written for too much of its length as if he were keeping his narrative powers deliberately in check. For those that doubt he is capable of powerful writing, the last chapter stands as rebuttal, with its tribute to Katherine Anne Porter -- to whom the book is dedicated -- and an adult's recollection of how the flu brought home at age seven the early realization that "life was not a perpetual present, and that even tomorrow would be part of the past, and that for all my days and years to come I too must one day die." I'd like to have seen more of those personal close-ups of the impact of the flu instead of the grim numbers in Philadelphia, then the grim numbers in San Francisco, then the grim numbers in Alaska. It is as if Crosby wanted to write a history of the era as it was lived with the flu and wound up writing a journal of morbidity and mortality, and the virus sleuthing that followed. He aimed for a vision and achieved a laboratory slide -- no mean accomplishment, but not, I think, what we or he were finally after.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great example of what history can be
Between Alfred Crosby and Richard Collier, these two men have written the definitive works on the Spanish Influenza Pandemic of 1918. Subsequent writers like Iezzoni and Kolata heavily use the primary reseach done by both Crosby and Collier.

Crosby's work does, to some degree, lack eloquent narrative, but it is a superbly researched book on the pandemic. Crosby sticks to the facts and statistics and has achieved a work that is well written history. I would recommend reading Richard Collier's work in conjunction with this work to get the full impact of the pandemic. Crosby focuses on the pandemic's impact in America while Collier focuses on the more global experience. While Collier may have a better flowing narrative, Crosby includes all of the hard statistics which lends a different, more concrete feeling to the subject matter. Overall, if Crosby's work is the left shoe, Collier's is the right shoe. You can read one without the other, but, why would you want to?

4-0 out of 5 stars very good, but it has been overtaken by The Great Influenza
Without a doubt this is an excellent, provocative, and thoughtful book. In and of itself I'd give it 5 stars... But that would make it impossible to rate John Barry's The Great Influenza higher. Of course Barry's book came out 25 years after Crosby's, and to some extent is derivative. But it goes so far beyond Crosby, and adds so much context about scientists, the virus itself, and politics, there is unfortunately no reason to read Crosby any more. Actually that's wrong-- there is a reason. If you wnat tables and statistics, Crosby includes them. Barry does not. Although Barry's book does read better, and has a real narrative flow and scientist-characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars The First on the 1918 Pandemic--and still the best...
Crosby's classic study of the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic-- while recently supplemented by John M. Barry's excellent new book THE GREAT INFLUENZA and Gina Kolatta's FLU-- remains the Source Authority for all serious students of this devastating killer virus.

While researching FINAL EPIDEMIC, my own novel of the re-emergence of the Spanish flu of 1918, Crosby's book was a goldmine of information... and a primary reason why I spent so many sleepless nights during the time I was writing on the subject.

Crosby's book is, without doubt, the classic study of the H1N1 killer flu virus and ranks among the best of medical non-fiction narrative around.

Frighteningly, killer flu and the possibility of a lethal pandemic is again a timely subject.

A startling fact about the original 1918 plague that devastated humanity --notable, since it occurred within the lifespan of many still alive today-- is the collective amnesia that so often surrounds that event.

Few Americans realize that it's extremely probable that they have a family member only a generation or two ago who fell prey to the deadly Spanish Flu pandemic; tales of when the cry "bring out your dead!" echoed along American streets were seldom passed from those who witnessed it to those of us who descended from the survivors. It takes a trip to virtually any cemetery to bring the death toll home to us, as marker after marker identifies the victims of the 1918 flu pandemic. Worldwide, deaths in 1918-1919 totalled at least 40 million humans, and very likely as many as 100 million-- all within a timespan measured in months.

As I write this, an avian influenza virus not unlike that which triggered the 1918 pandemic, if forcing the mass slaughter of chickens and other birds throughout Asia. It is an attempt to forestall the very real possibility that the virus (which already has infected human victims through bird-to-human transmission, and currently has a 70 percent mortality rate among human victims) could acquire genes which would allow for human-to-human transmission.

During research for FINAL EPIDEMIC, I interviewed dozens of medical researchers and epidemeologists. Without exception, each stated that their greatest fear was a resurgence of a influenza virus similar to the 1918 variant, which through incubation in humans mutated into a unprecedented killer of humanity. Based on the cyclic nature of flu pandemics, I was told, mankind was already overdue-- and, worse: woefully unprepared-- for such an emerging viral Shiva.

Influenza was, and remains, a universal threat: As Crosby wrote in "America's Forgotten Pandemic," "I know how not to get AIDS. I don't know how not to get the flu."

5-0 out of 5 stars What do YOU know about the flu of 1918??
The title of this exceptional book is the understatement of the 20th Century. This was not your average killer flu! The handful of other killer flu's of the century (defined as 20,000+ deaths, a small fraction of the number who died in 1918), the kind with which we're all familiar, look mighty miniscule beside this virus that took its victims in a most painful and violent manner. This pandemic, which killed more soldiers than World War I, seems to have completely escaped the attention of America's under-informed and virus-obsessed media today. So much so that Crosby devotes a chapter to the fact that this major event--which, by the way, has never been fully explained--disappeared from the collective conscience as soon as it was over. Some of this undoubtedly was due to (1) no television, and (2) very little radio due to the war, and (3) the war. Because I assure you, if anything even remotely of this magnitude happened today, there would be absolute mass panic and hysteria: the economy might well come crashing to the ground for good. This mysterious and deadly virus remains unique in several ways, including the weird fact that it mostly attacked and killed people in the prime of their lives (20s and 30s). So devastated was port-city Philadelphia that coffins were stacked in the street. Coffin-makers naturally took advantage and price-gouged to the extent the US government had to intervene (kind of like gas immedately shooting up to $5 a gallon on September 11th in Indianapolis, Indiana). And on and on. There is nothing about this subject or this book that isn't shocking. As for the data, well, that's how good academic research is done, for crying out loud. If the author hadn't included the statistics, everyone would have denounced this as shoddy pseudoscience. Moreover, the startling mortality data are fascinating in their own right. An exceptionally well-written, riveting read. ... Read more

Book Description

Completion of sequencing of the human genome, as well as those of many other organisms, has now opened the door for exploration of the proteome, the many thousands of interacting proteins in a given organism. Critical to tackling the complexity of the proteome is a workable strategy using reliable and tested protocols for identifying, isolating, and quantifying proteins in cells and cell pathways and for performing functional assays. Proteins and Proteomics: A Laboratory Manual, authored by Richard Simpson of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Melbourne, provides the first authoritative and wide–ranging protocol-based approach to proteomics. Presented as a logical strategy for analyzing proteomes, Proteins and Proteomics provides information about protein structure and numerous methods for the preparation and analysis of protein samples ranging from electrophoresis and mass spectrometry to protein chips and informatics. Extensive background information and references are provided regarding the theoretic aspects of the techniques presented as well as their applications. This manual is an essential laboratory tool for genetics and molecular biology investigators moving from studies of genomics and genotype to those of proteomics and phenotype. It is invaluable for cell biologists, developmental biologists, and neuroscientists exploring the intricacies of the proteome. It will also be an excellent resource for protein chemists and biochemists. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An OK book but reinvents the wheel
To be fair this is a good and useful book, but at a higher price than the already excellent published (2002) laboratory proteomics by Westermeier and Naven, save your dollars. The latter goes for half the price and serves the same purpose with excellent illustrations and protocols.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "must have" book for the practicing proteomics lab .
This is a outstanding book, covering all aspects of sample preparation and experimental techniques involved in protein and peptide analysis by gels, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Each chapter gives detailed protocols complete with tips, reagent lists, short tutorials (printed in blue colored information panels) and references. The protocols will work for you just as they are written and will give you a place to start in customizing and adapting them to your own circumstances (and you certainly will do that!). As with any fast moving field an updated second edition will be welcome around 2006, but by then, I'll be happy to replace my dog-eared copy for a fresh one (or maybe not, I don't really think a book as good as this will ever be obsolete). I recommend you buy the paperback edition, it will serve you well and save you some $$$. ... Read more
