Book Description

A lifeless newborn baby is found discarded in a motel dumpster.Authorities quickly arrest the infant's teenage parents, charging them with murder.Did Amy Grossberg and Brian Peterson, in fact, murder their own baby? When Tammy Wynette died suddenly at a relatively young age, why was no autopsy performed? Was someone trying to hide the real cause of death?Did Sam Sheppard (who later served as the basis for the television series "The Fugutive") really kill his wife? And if not, who committed the murder?

Things are not always as they appear, as world-renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht shows in this riveting behind-the-scenes look at nine famous cases.Drawing on police reports, depositions, trial testimony, and autopsy reports--as well as his four decades of experience--in MORTAL EVIDENCE Dr. Wecht, with the assistance of coauthors Greg Saitz and Mark Curriden, raises important issues and offers fresh perspectives on each case.In the nationally known baby case involving Amy Grossberg and Brian Peterson, Dr. Wecht reviews the evidence and comes to a startling conclusion. In fascinating detail, he demonstrates how the tools of forensic pathology often uncover murky, long-hidden secrets that track seemingly unsolvable crimes.

Writing in the first-person, Dr. Wecht leads readers into the heart of the investigation, focusing each chapter on a single engrossing drama. He reveals the most startling evidence that shows why, in his professional judgment, JonBenet Ramsey's killer most likely came from within her home.Dr. Wecht also offers insight into the O.J. Simpson trial and the murder of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman, and shocking revelations about Robert Berdella's conviction for grisly torture and sex-abuse crimes against young men.Other cases covered include the drug-related death of casino magnate Ted Binion; the 1982 showdown between religious sect members and police in Miracle Valley, Arizona; and Robert Curley's death by long-term, methodical thallium poisoning.

Whether you find the fictional plots of such dramas as "C.S.I." and crime scene documentaries exciting or you are just fascinated by true crime investigation, you'll be amazed by the true stories Dr. Wecht has to tell in this amazing real-life thriller. As this intriguing page-turner proves, the science of forensic pathology has changed the face of detective work forever. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Dissappointing perspective of the cases
I was expecting this book to provide a detailed account and complete involvement in the cases depicted. It was dissappointing to note that a lot of the information is just speculation based on newspaper articles and journalism sources (including tabloids), which undermine the impartiality and quality of the evidence presented in the book. Still, the narrator reviews and explains autopsy reports and photography, which is more than a normal reader can understand or access for himself. The author was marginally involved in some of the cases, and as such can only provide limited insight into the what actually happened. If you expect an absolute and unavoidable truth, this is not the book. If you want to read the opinion of an expert regarding famous cases, then this book might help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
Well-written with exceptional content. I could not put it down. Would definitely recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book explains the author's theories behind nine well known cases. It is well written and easy to understand.

Once I started reading about one of the cases I could not put the book down until I reached the end.

The writer definitely paints a realistic "word picture" making you feel like you are along for the ride with Dr. Wecht in each one of his investigations. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Much About Products
The sparse information in WOUND CARE about caring for wounds and preventing them is superb, but the manual is primarily a catalogue of products. The type of material provided in WOUND CARE can be found in the detail sheets packed with wound care products. I found the book a disappointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wound Care, A Clinical Guide
This book is an excellent nursing resource for wound care. The opening provides a quick review of wounds and the healing process. It then moves on to proper wound assessment techniques, staging, and measurement. A section is dedicated to describing product types used for the prevention of decubitis ulcers. What I found most helpful in the nursing field was the wound care product descriptions. The book gives a general overview of product types and catagories then procedes to list specific brand name products. Each product is pictured for easier identification. The sizes of each product are listed along with the action, indications, contra-indications, and application/removal methods. This is excellent for product comparison as well as referral. I would suggest this for any nurse interested in wound care. It would also be a great reference book for nursing units that treat various wounds.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much focus on products and not enough on wound care
Received this book as a CEU offering. It seemed 3/4 of the book was on products. In some ways this was helpful as a comparison reference, but in this day of managed care, I can't use all these products. Would have liked more information on wound healing

3-0 out of 5 stars a list of wound care products, not a text on doing woundcare
if you're looking for a comprehensive listing of wound care products (dressings, gels, etc.) then this book is a good resource. my only complaint is that it is misleadingly titled. only a brief, introductory section of the book actually discusses wound care, and it does it in such a short space that it is useless to the beginner (because it lacks detail and specificity) and useless to the experienced clinician (because it lacks in-depth analysis and meaningful references). it certainly does list just about every single wound product you can mention, though. it should have been titled "the wound care product PDR"

5-0 out of 5 stars Product information is wonderful
I am a wound care specialist, in the home care setting, this book has been very beneficial . I use this book as a PDR for wound care products. This book is also a wonderful teaching/ educational aide to those not familer w/ wound care products. ... Read more

For nearly 20 years, Slauson-Cooper has been the book of choice in general veterinary pathology. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for first year residents and beyond
I purchased this book at the tail end of my first year and wish I had gotten it sooner. It is an awesome quick reference for conferences and sign-out. The descriptions of what to look for in a particular lesion are great. The differential diagnoses are a touch incomplete. However, for the differentials listed, an explanation of why the lesions are different is given. Another bonus is the fact that special stains are included for each lesion (my personal favorite). The book could be a bit more organized, but I think this will come with age. Overall I thinks it's a great book and a good buy (bordering on must buy) for the lost confused eyes of a first year resident.

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs improvement
A direct quote (p. 866): Clinically, melanomas occuring on the sun-damaged skin of the face and presenting as large irregularly pigmented patches have been referred to as lentigo maligna melanoma.
Does the author know what she is writing about?
Other sections are better. E.g. I quite liked the GI tract. Nevertheless, this book, in its present shape, is a pseudo-help for residents. With so many excellent textbooks available, what is the use of a less than average one?

5-0 out of 5 stars Required for the Pathology resident's bookshelf
This book is a must for all pathology residents, especially those starting out. It is excellent for a quick reference before sign out or conference and is a good starting point for further reading. It should be coupled with a solid surgical pathology reference book such as Sternburg.

5-0 out of 5 stars PGY-3 Pathology Resident
This is an excellent title and should be part of the required textbook list that all pathology residents should get at the start of their residency. The bullet comment format is very useful and this text is a fine companion to the standard Anatomic Pathology text. It is also perfect for a quick review of a disease entity either at sign-out with staff or prior to a larger scope teaching session. Get this book early in the residency if at all possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a first year pathology resident
I bought this book without the benefit of any reviews or opinions from other folks in pathology because the title sounded so perfect for addressing a lot of the frustrations facing a new resident. This book is really excellent. It is a great value...because most of the photomicrographs are in black and white. (There are some color plates in the front.) Normally this is considered a deficit in pathology books, but its other good qualities outstrip the lack of color photos. The chapters are organized by organ system. There are a number of diagnostic algorithm charts. Each entity has bullets under the following headings: clinical features, gross pathology, histopathology, special stains and IHC, modern techniques for diagnosis (e.g. serum antibodies, flow cytometry, or EM, etc.), differential diagnosis, and pearls. There are also selected references at the end of each entry. It is well-organized and easy to use with a fairly good index. Many less common, but important, entities aren't given their own headings, but are mentioned (along with some pearls) in the differential diagnoses of more common entities. Many of the residents in my program are getting this book. I think everyone has been impressed with its completeness and ease of use. It may not be quite as valuable to experienced staff pathologists who can generate a complete differential diagnosis just by looking at a slide or hearing a history. Thanks so much to the authors, editors, and contributors. ... Read more

Written by the foremost authority in the field, this practical book introduces students to the practice of forensic psychology. Wrightsman clearly presents the roles and responsibilities of forensic psychologists and addresses both the opportunities and temptations inherent in the role. Through this lens, Wrightsman explores the ethical responsibilities of the field such as promising clients too much, the possibility of becoming advocates rather than objective scientists, and the pitfalls associated with substituting one's values for data.Wrightsman's broad view of forensics shows readers the variety of ways that psychologists aid the legal system such as serving as expert witnesses, criminal profiling, trial consulting, determining child custody decisions, assisting in jury selection, and testifying about battered women syndrome or rape trauma. Wrightsman provides students with an accurate and candid picture of the field, while at the same time, demonstrating the variety and depth of opportunities available. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Safety Standard. Period.
Thirty years ago I met the predecessor to this volume. Sounds like a long time? I have made it those 30 years because of what I learned from this book.

If you are a chemistry student (I was a freshman when I encountered this book) then you need to read this book before you start working with your reagents.

If you are employed in a field where you work in a laboratory or come into contact with laboratory materials (albeit - it is aimed at chemical labs and not specifically at bioscience labs) then you need to read about the materials you could be exposed to, BEFORE you are exposed.

If you are a medical professional - then you already have one.

If you are a legal professional and you deal with toxic torts: you need one.

Concise, clear and accessible by any high school grad. If you work with chemicals - you need this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
As a busy forensic pathologist who practices in North America, I eagerly anticipated the newest release of the Knight textbook.

The book, however, is a sad collection of re-hashed material from Knight's earlier works, confounded by new errors strewn throughout its substance. Where error does not exist, peculiar use of the English language makes reading it painful.

The gunshot wound chapter is particularly disappointing. Here, Knight's/Saukko's inexperience with these types of wounds is obvious. Their discussion is superficial, and in several places, of questionable practical value.

I am not at all able to recommend this book to anyone who actually practices forensic pathology.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most authoritative forensic pathology text on the market
In the preface to the second edition, Knight advised readers to approach every autopsy with a critical attitude, pointing out the fact that there were several Appeals going through the English courts that emphasized the need for objective expert evidence in order to prevent miscarriages of justice.
Since 1996, the number of such cases has grown, and in particular there have been a number of recent high profile cases involving child deaths, where expert pathological evidence has been called into doubt. In the preface to this 3rd edition, the authors again stress the need for caution and the avoidance of over-interpretation, and the reader is reminded of the limitations of interpretation throughout the text.
For example, post mortem changes such as rigor mortis and lividity, as well as decomposition and temperature changes can be of use in formulating a post mortem interval. However, some experts have been dogmatic about the inferences that can be drawn from these phenomena, and Knight and Saukko attempt to provide evidence based conclusions about the utility of such findings.
The reader is left in little doubt that the range of autopsy findings can only give a very basic estimate of post mortem interval, and that there are so many variables in operation that previously held 'rules of thumb' can only be very broad 'guestimates'.
Knight advised his readers in the 2nd Edition Preface that his text draws on the writings of the 'great' pathologists and morbid anatomists, and each subject is meticulously referenced with the original papers that form the basis of modern forensic pathological principles. This principle is continued in this 3rd edition, although the style of the referencing has changed.
In the previous edition, references were to be found at the end of each subsection, allowing quick access to the relevant papers. Now they have been combined in a familiar manner at the end of each chapter.
Although this ensures that each chapter flows in more readable style, I do think that the new edition has lost some of the charm of its predecessors. However, the quality of the referencing remains formidable - one can still find the classic papers alongside newer evidence based articles, allowing comprehensive research of most topics presented in the text.
The style of this 3rd edition has undergone a complete revamp - and it looks stunning! Most of the illustrations are now in full colour, and there have been hundreds of new additions - both from Cardiff and Finland. Some familiar photographs have been retained, and there is now a collection of images that rivals most textbooks, and even most atlases.
The layout and style of the text is also more pleasant to the eye, and this edition has lost the 'bland' look and feel of the last edition.
A vast number of Coronial autopsies in England and Wales are carried out by hospital-based histopathologists, and the vast majority of those cases are sudden natural deaths. The inclusion of a fantastic chapter on the findings in such cases, and in particular the histological features of, for example early myocardial infarction etc, coupled with advice on cause of death formulation are of great value for non-forensic pathologists carrying out autopsies within a medico-legal framework.
The target audience of this book is invariably practicing forensic pathologists. However, there is such a wealth of information that hospital based histopathologists will frequently find themselves turning to this book as a source of authoritative guidance on what features to look for specifically in maternal deaths, epilepsy and asthma related deaths, and if they provide services to the Coroner at Public mortuaries, deaths involving immersion, fire and decomposed bodies.
Of use to trainee pathologists, there is also a wealth of practical information contained in this book on how to carry out autopsies, and how best to access certain structures, such as vertebral arteries etc.
I would also strongly recommend this text to medical students. Shorter texts such as 'Simpson's Forensic Medicine' cover similar ground but in a superficial manner, and without the capacity to stimulate further reading. This textbook, however functions well as both an introductory text and a detailed reference text, and as such should find its way onto the shelves of medical school libraries (the cover price may be a little too steep for those wishing to own their own text on forensic medicine).
The chapter on wound identification is excellent, and benefits from many new illustrations - including more clinically relevant images of wounds in the living. All students undertaking their emergency medicine and trauma rotations should read this chapter so that they can correctly distinguish a laceration from an incised wound.
In the current medical curriculum, forensic pathology, and forensic medicine receive scant attention, and the market for textbooks in this subject, previously examined by all medical schools as a matter of routine, has suffered in a similar fashion. This is shame, because there is much within this text that is of direct relevance to the current undergraduate curriculum, and all clinical medical students would benefit from this knowledge.
The second edition of this text enthused me to seek out some of the classic source articles referenced by Knight. After reading this present edition, I find myself once again enthused to review the evidence base for the underlying principles of forensic pathology.
Practitioners are often criticized for their approach to interpretation of injuries using a weak evidence base, or the 'n of one' technique. In this edition Knight and Saukko attempt to shake up these traditional beliefs and have drawn on the relevant evidence base with which to make their observations.
However, they repeatedly warn the reader of the consequences of over interpretation. The prescriptive didactic teachings of previous authors was dangerous to the justice system, and should now be consigned to history. Hodder Arnold have yet again added a triumphant forensic text to their stable, and are to be congratulated! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!! but slight lack in essentially details.
This is the book of books for histologists... a virtual bible for the histotechnologist. The book covers everything from laboratory management, fixation (theoretical and practical aspects), sectioning, staining, and an overall and detailed view of histology and immunohistochemistry. However, I found some sections to be more as summaries rather than desciptions. By that I mean, for instance the microtomy section (which deals with problems and solutions to those problems while sectioning) lacks the details needed to correctly resolve a situation unless you are already a trained histologist. I would recommend maybe adding more information with diagrams of the microtome, blade angles and the difference changing such angles would make (something that would be found in a BOR study guide or more like the microscopy section - Chapter 4 that perfectly diagrams and depicts all aspects of microscopy very well). Also, the recipes for some stains... unless someone was a trained histologist, some the solutions may be difficult to make up from the way they are worded (i.e. amyloid (Congo Red) solution saturated in 80% alcohol ... back of book tells what saturation point for Congo Red is in water but not alcohol... simple explanation within recipe itself would help making up such stains easier, I believe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very High Yield!
High yield cell and molecular biology is exactly what it says, and from the outset doesn't pretend to be anything else. "Lean efficient text" says the blurb, "Study guides with the barest essentials". These words certainly comforted me after reading the somewhat ominous title! The text is compact, with clear and helpful diagrams illustrating and clarifying the most difficult concepts in the book. The style is in fact very much the same as I might choose to write own revision notes, with chapters divided into sub-titles, and those into bullet points. Key words are emboldened, so it is possible to absorb a page by only scanning the bold type; useful if you are caught short when preparing for an exam and need the facts quickly! There is a smattering of clinical examples throughout, and descriptions of procedures such as PCR, which both help anchor your thoughts of the sometimes abstract nature of the subject. Being a molecular biology book it is biased toward genetics, and as this is a confusing area for many students (including me), this will help if your genetics lectures tend to sail several meters over your head. On the downside, the economic nature of the text and the no-frills nature of the diagrams mean that it is not a particularly colourful or engaging read in it's own right. This is also positive, meaning that it is easier to extract information quickly than would be possible from a more bulky text. It is clearly meant to be dipped into, rather than read cover-to-cover. Realistically though, who would read a textbook cover-to-cover? People who will benefit from this book will be pre-clinical medical students, those intercalating a BSc in clinical science or genetics, doctors requiring an up-to-date review, or other students of biomedical science. This should not be your only textbook on cellular biology and genetics, but will serve as the perfect revision tool when exams sidle up too close for comfort. ... Read more

Book Description

Links have recently been established between the study of death assemblages by archaeologists and paleontologists (taphonomy) and the application of physical anthropology concepts to the medicolegal investigation of death (forensic anthropology). Forensic Taphonomy explains these links in a broad-based, multidisciplinary volume. It applies taphonomic models in modern forensic contexts and uses forensic cases to extend taphonomic theories. Review articles, case reports, and chapters on methodology round out this book's unique approach to forensic science. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Overview of the field of forensic taphonomy
Haglund and Sorg have done an excellent job of compiling and assembling information about the diverse field of taphonomy. The authors chosen to contribute to this volume are the leaders in their respective sub-disciplines and are illustrative of the many forms taphonomy can take. They further demonstrate that taphonomy is no longer considered just as: the study of skeletal assemblages in paleoecological and archaeological settings. It is a growing, diversifying, multi-faceted field. Students of taphonomy will find references in this book invaluable. In short: it will be your greatest resource in taphonomical studies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Single First Source for Neuropathology
As a neurology resident, I find this book to be extraordinarily helpful. It is, as the title of this review suggests, the first text I consult for any neuropathology question. It is also an outstanding resource for concise summaries of the clinicopathological hallmarks of a wide variety of conditions.

The book contains numerous high-quality photographs of gross anatomical pathology and histopathology. The text is well-written, clear and concise. There are a number of handy summary tables in each section. The overall layout of the book is clear, aesthetically pleasing, and visually appealing. The color coding of different sections is helpful in reviewing a given topic, and the index is complete.

Some previous reviews suggested that bibliographic references could be more complete. While this is true, I find it to be a minor point in such an otherwise outstanding text. For comprehensive treatment of any given subject, other, more detailed textbooks are available, but few can rival the clarity of text and quality of pictures in Ellison et al.

From the perspective of an academic neurologist in training, this is the one neuropathology book I want to have on my bookshelf. It is an outstanding contribution to the field. ... Read more

Book Description

This is the first comprehensive volume of the clinical management of sex addiction. Collecting the work of 28 leaders in this emerging field, the editors provide a long-needed primary text about how to approach treatment with these challenging patients. The book serves as an excellent introduction for professional new to the field as well as serving as a useful reference tool. The contributors are literally the pioneers of one of the last frontiers of addiction medicine and sex therapy.

With a growing awareness of sex addiction as a problem, plus the advent of cybersex compulsion, professional clinicians are being confronted with sexual compulsion with little clinical or academic preparation. This is the first book distilling the experience of the leaders in this emerging field. With a focus on special populations, it also becomes a handy problem-solving tool. Readable, concise, and filled with useful interventions, it is a key text for a problem clinicians must be able to identify. It is destined to be a classic reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great quick reference for the pics!
As a Pathology resident, I love this book. When I'm reading in Robbins and a picture isn't given for an entity, or I want to see more, and bigger, examples of something, I just flip this book open. It isn't meant to be a stand alone text, but the pics are awesome and are a great supplement to any text.

3-0 out of 5 stars plenty images, too clearly text
Milikowski et Berman's Atlas has a lot of full-coloured images(over 1000 images!), taken at microscopic level. Although every image has text for explanation, it is so simply written(20-30 words) that it is not easy for me, a beginner at histo-pathology, to understand well. ... Read more

Book Description

More than ever, the sixth edition of the highly acclaimed Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialties fulfils its role as the essential one-stop port of call for all the clinical specialties: Obstetrics, Gynacology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Primary Care, ENT, Eyes, Skin diseases, Anaesthesia, Orthopaedics & Trauma. It's ten books in one, and from this point of view alone it must be the best-value medical book ever. And it's an exciting read because, by virtue of its diversity and because within it all the specialties are interrelated, it offers unrivalled opportunities for multidisciplinary learning. It's only one inch thick, yet in this inch lie all the ideas and facts essential to those who will or who are already caring for patients whose needs may or may not fit within the traditional bounds of individual specialties. The ideas may be difficult, and the facts may be numerous, but here they are made comprehensible and memorable, laid out in the Oxford Handbook's characteristic style, the consistent page-a-topic format with space for the reader's own updatings and refinements. So this new edition scores 10 out of 10 because: 1. Its ten books for the price of one-so there is no medical exam that it cannot help you to pass (for a start, it even teaches you to master your own anxiety). 2. It's intimately linked to the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine, so that together they provide an internally consistent view of the whole of clinical medicine and cover everything you need to know about medicine and surgery. 3. Full of practical advice, with step-by-step guides and dosages given in full. 4. It's thoroughly up-to-date and more evidence-based than ever before. 5. With many hundreds of links to reliable medical internet sites such as Medline and Clinical Evidence, it is easy for readers to probe beneath the topics covered. 6. It's holistic and multidisciplinary 7. It's authoritative (all sections double-checked by senior specialists)-yet always aware of medicine's short-comings. 8. It's human, it's humorous, yet all the while it is deeply serious about communicating not just recipes for care but a philosophy of medicine which has come to be respected around the world. 9. More illustrations, with NEW colour pictures in Opthamology and Dermatology. 10. It's small; it's neat - and it just can't wait to get into your pocket. ... Read more
