4-0 out of 5 stars Fungal ID
It is a well written, and illustrated book for the idenfication of fungi, however, the inclusion of plates for appearance on media and more direct photos would improve the publication (and no doubt increase the cost) otherwise it is a good book for the identication of fungi in the laboratory that processes some fungi, as an offshoot to the microbiology department, a mycology department would include this in its library but would include other texts, and resources. In summary good at uni good on the bench, but would need suplementation in a pure mycology department.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's a good book for fungi identification
I have had very satisfactory experiences in the use of this book as a guide for the identification of Food Fungi, even though outside written for Fungi of Medical Importance. It displays a very particular approach that makes extremely didactic, mainly for the novices in the subject or that they do not make fungi identification of routine. It presents first a classification of the fungi based on the color of the colony and the characteristic formation of conidias of the fungi genera. In one second part of the book it makes a more detailed description of each one of the considered generas. And finally it makes an review of the main medias used in the isolation and identification of fungi. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to put down!
I agree with the Nobel Laurate quoted on the back of this book, - It's hard to put down! Interesting, well structured, highly readable book on general pathology with focus on the basic unit; the cell. I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in pathology, and especially the curious student who wants to know more than what't needed to pass an exam! Best medical text book I've read so far!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Intelligent Guide to Morbid Human Biology
Due in part to television, pathology holds a curious fascination for laymen and physicians alike. In medicine, pathologists always have the last word and frequently the first word. This humanistic treatment of pathology is appropriate reading for physicians, students, and broadly educated persons. It is immensely readable and with a gracious style that avoids the usual ghastly technical jargon of even the "best" pathology textbooks. It could be titled, "Pathologic Epistemology" or a "Thinking Man's Guide to the Human Species". Majno and his wife have returned to Virchow's maxim that disease happens in cells, the cells in tissues, the tissues in organs and the organs in people. If you think of yourself as literate this book will teach you about the inner you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for general pathology !
This is absolutely a great book. It has a lot of positive aspects: 1. easy to read 2. enough details 3. nice anecdotes which are written in smaller letters 4. easy to find what your looking for by bold, italic and underlined words 5. good table contents 6. good diagrams as well 7. at the end of each chapter a good summery

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent diagnostic guide for the clinical microbiologist
The recent edition of the "Color Atlas" is the standard by which all other comparable works must be judged. The volume should be the standard reference for both laboratory personnel and clinical microbiology educators. Previous reviews to the contrary, charts and figures represent the current state of the art in microbiologic taxonomy and identification methodology. The book is highly recommended for both professional microbiologists and for the interested layperson with a background in biology, chemistry and pathology.

I would recommend this book highly to anyone in the medical/clinical field as well as to clinical pathologists.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dearth of Death Data but some Gruesome & Missing Photos
"Handbook for Death Scene Investigators," Jay Dix & Mary Ernst: 0-8493-0298-6 (1999) has only 66 pages (11 chapters) of basic material on types of deaths, timing of deaths, decompositions, evidence collecting, signs of CPR and suggestions that forensic sub-specialists are needed in some cases. Appendix A has 12 page glossary of terminology, B has 14 page list of Rx medicines and Appendix C has 6 page narrative describing 45 B/W photographs of deaths, decomposition and injuries including 2 damaged vehicles.

The convenience of the small format (about 3.5 in. x 6 in.) is overshadowed by numerous shortcomings that includes print font too small to be easily read, poverty of useful information, 14 (or more) misspelled words and with 8 of 45 photographs totally missing (blank pages). The book appears to have been overly hastily assembled, not speaking too well for forensic scientists.

In short, the book is grossly overpriced. Yes, I sometimes carry it in my coat pocket.

Book Description

In this book, Oldstone focuses on several of the most famous viruses humanity has battled,.He begins with some we have effectively defeated, such as smallpox, polio, measles, and yellow fever, then describes the fascinating viruses that have captured headlines in more recent years: Ebola and other hemorrhagic fevers, Hantavirus, mad cow disease, and, of course, AIDS. He goes on to tell of the many scientists watching and waiting even now for the next great plague,monitoring influenza strains to see whether the deadly variant from 1918a viral strain that killed over 20 million people in1918-1919will make a comeback. Viruses have wiped out cities, brought down dynasties, and helped destroy civilizations.But, as Michael Oldstone reveals, scientific research has given us the power to tame many of these viruses as well. ... Reviews (3)

4-0 out of 5 stars The focus on historical impact makes this book worthwhile.
It is a shame that the decisive impact of communicable diseases on history are typically underplayed in school books. This information needs to be known by every educated person. Dr. Oldstone's book provides both an account of medical progress and its context in social and cultural history. In meeting these goals, this book succeeds admirably. Dr. Oldstone writes well. His expertise shines in his understanding of critical events in scientific development, and his knowledge of the contributions of both well-known and obscure scientists indicates a mastery of the breadth of the field. This scholarship is enhanced by his personal interactions with many of the 20th Century's great virologists, many of them familiar names, including Salk, Sabin, Montagnier, Gallo and Enders, among others. Some of the best illustrations in the books come from Dr. Oldstone's own research.
The discussion of the impact of viral disease on wars and public life are both factual and pointed. Having recently read, Jared Diamond's important book, "Guns, Germs and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies", I find Dr. Oldstone's exposition of many of the same stories support Diamond's conclusions while providing important additional information. I have read many other discussions of the disastrous impact of smallpox virus on Native Americans, but Oldstone goes beyond reporting victimization to point out that the Chiefs of the Five Nations were astute enough to be among the first to adopt Edward Jenner's discovery and vaccinate their own people, while in Europe resistance to this new approach continued. The Chiefs sent Jenner a letter and a ceremonial belt in thanks for his discovery.
It is fascinating how the social responses to lethal epidemics have not changed over the centuries, even into the 1990's (panic, cover-up, attempts to turn away fleeing refugees). The horrendous yellow fever epidemic of 1878 in my home town, Memphis, Tennessee, is described in some detail, particularly pointing out the selfless devotion of the physicians, nurses and religious orders who chose to stay, 60% of whom did not survive.
There are, however, some weaknesses. The third chapter, on immunology, is written very densely. Unlike the other chapters, there is no historical development, just a statement of the facts. Since this chapter contains information important for understanding later chapters, it should have been better developed with historical anecdotes to increase interest. The book is limited to a selection of viruses, but the reason for their inclusion and not others is unstated. Some very poorly-understood (but very dangerous) viruses are included, while others of great interest to a general audience (rhinoviruses = cold viruses) are absent. Research on many of these viruses and the eradication of poliovirus continues to advance, so that the information in this book should already be supplemented with readings from current science news. The editing by Oxford University Press is erratic and flawed. There are many typos and omissions. For example, in Chapter 13 the work of Zigas and Gajdusek on Kuru is first located in New Zealand, later (correctly) in New Guinea. In the same chapter I read that meat contaminated with Mad Cow disease was mislabeled and sold in St. Petersburg, but that turns out to be St. Petersburg, Russia, not Florida, as I first guessed. Many dates are absent, which makes it hard to get a sense of the rate of progress. The index is very sparse. For example, although rabies is mentioned in the text, there is no index entry for that virus. The description and explanation of ultrafiltration devices and other material is repeated several times in various chapters. The Works Cited contains numerous identical references to the same papers, for example the historic 1989 paper of Loeffler and Frosch on hoof and mouth disease.
Overall, the problems amount to an irritation. I recommend this book as an introduction to the field.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don¿t give up on this one too soon
This is an good book that unfortunately starts out in a very forbidding manner with a difficult (at least for me) introduction to the principles of virology in Chapter 1 followed by the principles of immunology in Chapter 2, but then gets very readable. The material on smallpox and yellow fever is fascinating. Oldstone leaves it unclear whether mad cow disease is caused by a miss-manufactured prion protein or by a virus: Others books, including Richard Rhodes' Deadly Feasts: Tracking the Secrets of a Terrifying New Plague (1997), clearly cite the cause as being faulty prion protein production in the brain.

This is not for the squeamish. I confess that there were twenty or so pages on polio that I skipped, not wanting to relive that sadness, although of course the defeat of polio is one of the great triumphs in the history of medicine. Incidentally, the title owes something to the classic Rats, Lice and History, by Hans Zinsser, first published in 1934, a book that has enjoyed a well-deserved and remarkable commercial success not easily duplicated.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not great
I was not impressed by this book. I admit I have, so far, only glanced at it. What I found was:

- one factual error: Sherlock Holemns was based on Prof Joeseph Bell not Dr Charles Bell

- a very cursory description of the history and recent outbreak of the Ebola virus. I would expect Time magazine to have a better article;

- an exetremely cursory description of Hantaviruses. The Field Guide to Germs by Wayne Biddle does it better;

- avarege descriptions of the histories of "classic" infectious diseases such as yellow fever. I recommend Plague, Pox & Pestilence by Kenneth F. Kipple (Ed.) for an excellent lay introduction to the topic. ... Read more

Book Description

Serita Stevens has published many books, from mystery novels to a description of poisonous plants. She also has long been a nurse, and it is that profession that sent her to learn more about what a nurse could do when one of her cases seemed to have a criminal or illegal side. "SleuthRN" on the Web led her to the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) and that started her off on her specialty as a forensic nurse. She took the courses that gave her training in law and medicine, learning that the number of cases that came under the umbrella of forensic is a great deal larger than she had imagined: if there is any legal aspect at all, forensics play a part. Insurance? Possible liability? Workman's compensation? All these and more join the more obvious criminal or suspected criminal cases in having "forensic" connotations.

But what does the forensic nurse know and do that other well-trained nurses and even most doctors do not? Recognizing a possible forensic situation is just the beginning. Forensic nurses are trained to know when to bring in law enforcement, how to treat the patient so as to learn the full story, how to present the findings to doctors and detectives. They learn to recognize possible evidence and preserve it properly. They have particular skills in spotting details that are overlooked by those who are without medical knowledge that is coupled with law. A forensic nurse is skillful with special equipment. They photograph evidence, and may find such evasive clues as nearly invisible marks that an automobile's bumper leaves on the victim's clothing, and they know how to question a fearful child to get accurate information. They are also trained to give evidence in a court case, since nurses are almost inevitably called upon as the first witness to see the patient when he or she is brought into the emergency room, a requirement that often terrifies someone without experience or training.

In fascinating informal case histories that read like stories in a novel, Stevens describes all these and many more aspects of the forensic nurse's work. Each individual case looks at the valuable "extras" these nurses bring to their medical specialty. In one case early in the book Stevens even walks us through the necessarily several-hour examination of a young female victim of sexual assault, and every reader will be amazed by the nurse's techniques, how she uses special equipment to bolster her information, and how thorough the examination must be for an accurate result.

Forensic Nurse is a book that will leave every reader hoping to have this fast-growing medical specialty represented in his or her medical world, always on call if and when it is needed.
