5-0 out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive Ever
I think that the thing I found most helpful about this book, is that the illustrations show normal articulation and then have the traumatized area together for easier comparisons. This book covers everything from cellular biology to disease pathology and histology. It's worth the money to have this book as a resource in your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for histology students
I would recommend this book for anyone taking histology in medical school or undergrad. I am a med student and found this book much easier to learn from compared to other textbooks I have read. The author writes in a fashion that enhances learning. The pictures are also very good and helped me to further visualize the types of epithlia. I studied from the following which is also on amazon.com:

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb. Gratitude and commendations to the authors.
Absolutely excellent book with abundant illustrations and clearly spelled out rules which ALMOST completely conform to D.F. Gleason's original paradigm. Deviations from same are clearly identified as such and rationale is given. Concise yet thorough with a reasonable approach which doesn't seem to deviate from mainstream practice (although it should be stated that I'm NOT an academic uropathologist). Really an excellent treatise. Nicely done.

3-0 out of 5 stars This one depends on the reader....
This book was fair to midlin, depending on the perspective of the reader. I usually read for entertainment and to learn and the factual information presented was good. However, for a layperson like myself, I found much of the information on DNA and other crime solving techniques very confusing. It made me wonder how juries ever can understand it all. At times throughout the book, one would have to be a chemist to understand. Despite that, there were good portions that were both interesting and instructional. Anyone interested in forensics would just love this book. It is complete with pictures (some gruesome) and many different criminal investigative techniques. If you are reading this book because this is your field, it would be a five star book, if you are reading this book solely for entertainment - skip it, if you are reading this book in the hopes of committing a crime and getting away with it, it won't happen. But, if you are like me and are reading for both pleasure and knowledge, it's worth your time and effort.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Forensics
Not for the faint of heart, this book contains a fair amount of somewhat graphic photographs accompanying the text. While to be sure, this is not an in-depth thesis of forensics, for what it is, which is a layman's overview of forensic methods and detection, it is quite good. The font of the text and the book layout make it very comfortable to browse, and you may find yourself reading quite a lot in one sitting. Overall, very enjoyable, but don't expect a really deep book

3-0 out of 5 stars Picture book of forensic science
"Bodies of Evidence" is a Reader's Digest book about forensic science, featuring more than a hundred true crimes and many gory, full-color photographs. It's definitely not a text-book, but more of an overview of different methods of forensic detection. I didn't find the explanations particularly clear, and the cases chosen to illustrate the detective work were the usual, tried and true (or tried and convicted) Dr. Buck Ruxton, Aunt Thally and her poison tea, Sacco and Vanzetti, etc. The 'Boston Strangler' case was used as an example in the 'Suffocation and Strangulation' section, but no mention was made of the fact that DNA analysis has recently been used to clear Albert DeSalvo of at least one of the murders.

For those who are following the Chandra Levy case, "Bodies of Evidence" will provide an overview of the forensic techniques that the Washington D.C. police force may be employing.

The body of the book is divided into the following chapters, each with lots of illustrations and a case history or two: "Gathering the Evidence;" "Suicide or Murder?;" "Mark of Death (Physical assault, bruising);" "With Poison Deadly;" "Skull and Bones;" "Breath of Life (death by oxygen deprivation);" "Worm in the Flesh (decomposition, insect traces);" "Finger of Suspicion (fingerprints);" "Written in Blood;" "DNA Fingerprinting;" "Hanging by a Hair;" "The Speeding Bullet;" "Fire and Destruction;" "Fragments of Evidence (broken glass, paint fragments, etc);" "Speaking Likeness (voice prints);" "The Guilty Party (handwriting, identity parades, etc.);" "The Forensic Hardware (hi-tech methods and devices such as Neutron Activation, Mass Spectrometry, etc.);"

One minor criticism---I wish the publishers hadn't decided to stamp "CASE CLOSED" over the actual text of the case. It made the case histories slightly hard to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hidden Evidence Was Better
I've just started reading this book. I bought it a few weeks ago but I find that Hidden Evidence is much better in the way they set there book up. In this book there information seem to be satured (sorry I'm a horrible speller.) In hidden evidence the material is put in sudheading which helps to find the information a lot faster. This book has headings at the begining of each chapter but no subheadings. Also in Hidden Evidence there case studies were right after the chapter which made it easier to read not having to stop half way through a chapter in Bodies of Evidence they put it in no good spot and it has nothing to do with that chapter. But the information so far in this book is good to learn if you want to know how crimes are solved and how they use it. But remember I'm only started the book and this is how I find it so far. Oh and the pictures in both Hidden Evidence and Bodies Of Evidence are excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars one of the most fascinating books i've ever read
On tv the witty cop gets the criminal single handedly. In reality the case against a criminal is often made in the forensics lab. If you enjoy watching the New Detectives or the FBI Files on TV you will love this book. ... Read more

Book Description

Flesh and Bone: An Introduction to Forensic Anthropology offers the reader a solid background in forensic anthropology by out- lining some of the methods and procedures that best define the discipline. It introduces readers to the rapidly growing area known as forensic science, providing a comprehensive look at many of the participants in the field. Nafte avoids technical terminology whenever possible and includes photographs, charts, and illustrations to complement the text.

The book evolves sequentially, beginning with a discussion of all things forensic and then continuing to detail the broad field of anthropology, the process of death, decomposition, and skeletonization. Methods of identifying the human skeleton, DNA analysis, and the reconstruction of identity are highlighted. The final chapter deals with the modern application of forensic anthropology to human rights missions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Well-Written
Myriam has compiled an excellent overview of forensic science, well-researched and documented.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Solid, Informative Book
Flesh and Bone was required reading for my course in forensic anthropology. I found it very informative and interesting. I like how many of the legal terms were translated. The book has inspired me to pursue this field of study even further. I recommend it to students who are nervous about the sciences and cannot get through alot of technical terminology, and for those who are curious about crime scene investigation. The pictures are helpful even though some are quite graphic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Read!
Flesh and Bone by Myriam Nafte

As a curious and somewhat eclectic reader, I was quite taken with the cover and title of this book so I bought it. What a compelling read!

For someone with no formal background in science, this book presented an interesting and thorough introduction to the topic of forensic anthropology without being too challenging. I found myself drawn back to the book time and again.

The first of four sections introduces the context for the book - the definition and development of forensic science. Then, the author moves to anthropology and its sub-disciplines. This provides the backdrop for understanding the context of forensic anthropology.

Section two covers the human body. Some of the pictures in the book are a little upsetting to look at, but after a while, they become a little less disturbing.

Section three deals with the mysteries to be uncovered through the examination of human remains. This part of the book is fascinating and provides some great examples of actual cases. Differences between male and female skeletons and ages are interesting, as is the whole discussion about what death is and what happens to the body afterward.

Section four focuses on the human rights aspect of this type of work. Unfortunately, there have been too many 'for instances' to illustrate when and why this work is so critical lately.

It provides a good base from which to follow discussions on criminal matters, read detective stories with a new eye and follow new developments in dating and understanding early historical mysteries such as the illness that supposedly threatened King Tut's family.

It is an academic book with many good references and hints for further reading as well as ideas on interesting collections to visit on your travels! All in all, a great book to add to your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, Informative, Brilliant
M. Nafte has successfully and brilliantly introduced students and interested readers alike, to the very scientific field of forensic anthropology. It is difficult enough to read through dense scholarly materials, but Professor Nafte has found a way of making forensic anthropology accessible to specialists and non-specialists alike. I highly recommend this book to physical and forensic anthropology students who are beginning in the field, scholars who need generalized data to inform their research, students and employees in the area of criminal justice who regularly encounter materials in the field, police forces, coroners offices, and finally (but not lastly), interested readers. I guarantee their understanding of the difficult and fascinating field of forensics will be greatly enhanced. I look forward to more books from Professor Myriam Nafte.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I found M.Nafte's book, Flesh and Bone: An Introduction to Forensic Anthropology very informative and helpful. Details and difficult concepts were easy to understand. The author has a good way of explaining scientific terminology and ensures that the reader is not intimidated. The photos are graphic and somewhat disturbing but they are used for educational purposes and not gratuitously. The preface of the book written by the mother of a child who has died under mysterious cirmcumstances and the dedication are especially touching. They illustrate the very humanistic aspect of the book as opposed to it being about hype and entertainment. Are there any other books by this author? ... Read more
