3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations
This book is really not a book but a pictionary. The text not only falls short, but is actually full of false statements and wrong proofs. However, nobody buys it for the text, they buy it for the illustrations. If you have a real core textbook and Agamemnons color atlas next to you, you can't fail Physiology. And this make it worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding quick reference
I teach Physiology at University and this book is my first port of call in areas in which I am not an expert. It is the easiest way to jog my memory as the index is good, the text is concise and the figures add a lot to my understanding. The only trouble is that it is getting a little old, so although it is great for most of the basics, it lacks a bit of detail on signal transduction pathways etc

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best physiology handbook ever published
This pocket manual is an envaluable reference tool. All experimental physiologists, biochemists and pharmacologists should own a copy of this color atlas. It is extremely well illustrated, clear and simple, but at the same way complete and deep in summarizing every aspect of human physiology. I can not recall any other full size book that is comparable to is one for the huge amount of information, written and illustrated. More precisely, there is no equivalent to this book in any other branches of biomedical sciences. We hope that the booklet will be periodically updated, also to honor the memory of its main author and revisor, Professor A. Despopoulos.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an example for other researchers
This book helps several students and professor around the world and it is easier to learn and to teach

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Much About Products
The sparse information in WOUND CARE about caring for wounds and preventing them is superb, but the manual is primarily a catalogue of products. The type of material provided in WOUND CARE can be found in the detail sheets packed with wound care products. I found the book a disappointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wound Care, A Clinical Guide
This book is an excellent nursing resource for wound care. The opening provides a quick review of wounds and the healing process. It then moves on to proper wound assessment techniques, staging, and measurement. A section is dedicated to describing product types used for the prevention of decubitis ulcers. What I found most helpful in the nursing field was the wound care product descriptions. The book gives a general overview of product types and catagories then procedes to list specific brand name products. Each product is pictured for easier identification. The sizes of each product are listed along with the action, indications, contra-indications, and application/removal methods. This is excellent for product comparison as well as referral. I would suggest this for any nurse interested in wound care. It would also be a great reference book for nursing units that treat various wounds.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much focus on products and not enough on wound care
Received this book as a CEU offering. It seemed 3/4 of the book was on products. In some ways this was helpful as a comparison reference, but in this day of managed care, I can't use all these products. Would have liked more information on wound healing

3-0 out of 5 stars a list of wound care products, not a text on doing woundcare
if you're looking for a comprehensive listing of wound care products (dressings, gels, etc.) then this book is a good resource. my only complaint is that it is misleadingly titled. only a brief, introductory section of the book actually discusses wound care, and it does it in such a short space that it is useless to the beginner (because it lacks detail and specificity) and useless to the experienced clinician (because it lacks in-depth analysis and meaningful references). it certainly does list just about every single wound product you can mention, though. it should have been titled "the wound care product PDR"

5-0 out of 5 stars Product information is wonderful
I am a wound care specialist, in the home care setting, this book has been very beneficial . I use this book as a PDR for wound care products. This book is also a wonderful teaching/ educational aide to those not familer w/ wound care products. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting. Translating it was a good experience
I found it very interesting. I learned so many things I did not know about this theme. I am not an especialist in the field. As a matter of fact, I am a translator and I had to choose a text as a final "work" to get my college degree; so I picked this up because I thought it could be of help for the kinesiologists and all therapists in the reabilitation institution where it was provided to me. As a book, I think it is brief, complete, explicative, easy-reading. I am sure it is an excellent reading and handbook for any especialist in the field, and believe me, I am quite certain of that. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good fast review of Pathophys. 4 days before exam!
As I said, 2day I passed my Pathophys exam due to this book. It's really good and made me understand sooooo many principles that i've never understood before. That's a really good one but i give it a 4/5 rating cause the book is quite expensive.

2-0 out of 5 stars don't over estimate this book
This book isn't for medical students, isn't for nursing student but should be good for a high school student wanting to learn about pathology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with specific, realistic, useful information.
A friend at work showed me this book, delighted with it. The first time I looked at it, I learned a "sign" I had never heard of before. With almost fifteen years' full-time experience on stepdown units, and a fascination with anatomy and physiology, I was not expecting to learn as many new things as I have from this book. The format is engaging, and almost begs people to pick it up and browse. It is a terrific home resource, and even better to leave lying around at the hospital. I have checked a number of on-line book sites and this book is not discounted anywhere. I think it's worth the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good General Review of Pathophysiology.
Pathophysiology Made Incredibly Easy is a good general review for students.

Each chapter begins with major points concerning the topic being discussed (eg. genetics or cardiovascular system) and then breaks down into specific disorders/conditions.

Explanation boxes appear throughout the chapters highlighting special points or ideas. Each chapter closes with a "Quick Quiz" to reinforce concepts.

The book uses simple language to explain complex ideas. Little reminders in the margins point out important things to remember.

I would recommend this book to anyone taking patho who is strugling with the basic concepts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC LITTLE REVIEW BOOK!
This book is not only great for quick look ups on rounds, but it is great during the first 2 years of med school because the little highlights/buzzwords helps with exams.
Very easy to read, highlights just the important stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little book, not much different from previous edition
Great book for what it's intended for- this is a handbook that only provides the essentials; nothing this size can be as all-encompassing as a complete textbook of medicine or UpToDate, so don't buy it with those expectations in mind. Covers facts on a surprisingly large number of diseases, ones often overlooked in many other handbooks such as Ferri's Guide, Washington Manual, or Pocket Medicine (the latter doesn't even mention anything on stroke management).

Of note, the new (4th) edition is no different from the 3rd edition with the exception of a few review questions tacked on the end, so if you have the older version, there's no need to upgrade. ... Read more

Book Description

This book takes account of the most recent findings in laboratory research and clinical trials to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date reference on the pathophysiology, epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of acquired and inherited aplastic anemia. As well as providing a detailed overview of the pathophysiology of the disease, the international team of authors covers all aspects of management, including the established approaches of bone marrow transplantation and immunosuppressive treatment, new approaches such as the use of hematopoietic growth factors and escalated immunosuppression, and controversial issues such as stem cell transplantation. Also included is an important international consensus document on treatment, and a final section concentrates on the inherited syndrome Fanconi's anemia. Detailed treatment guidelines are given, making this the definitive resource for hematologists and other clinicians involved in the management and supportive care of patients with aplastic anemia. Scientists interested in bone marrow failure will also find this an invaluable reference. ... Read more

Understanding Pathophysiology provides students with the basic concepts of pathophysiology and explains the processes of specific diseases in an easy-to-read, consistent format. The most current information on the mechanisms, manifestations, and treatments of disease are clearly and concisely presented. Accessible writing, numerous illustrations in full-color, and complete and separate treatment of pediatric pathophysiology are the hallmarks of this popular and respected text. The new third edition features extensively revised and updated content and an enhanced art program.

The book is divided into two parts. Part One presents the general principles of pathophysiology, including cell injury and repair; genetics; fluids and electrolytes, acids and bases; immunity, inflammation, and infection; stress; and cancer. Part Two is organized by body system, and for each system it covers normal anatomy and physiology, alterations of function in adults, and alterations of function in children. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Probably not the authors' fault
This was the prescribed textbook for a class I took in nursing school. I found it very difficult and unpleasant to read, as did most of my classmates. Halfway through the semester, someone introduced me to another book by the same authors, called "Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults & Children" (4th edition, ISBN 0-323-01438-0). This book is twice as long as "Understanding Pathophysiology" and is much easier to understand. It is a sheer pleasure to read. I would give it five stars without hesitation.

I suspect that "Understanding Pathophysiology" is a condensation of "Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults & Children" and that the publishers mistakenly thought they were making things easier for students by leaving some details out.

It may seem paradoxical, but I think it would take less time to read the big book than the small one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Analyze this
Rather than giving my opinion on this book, I would like to quote a typical paragraph. If you like it, you will probably like the book, but if you don't, you probably won't:

"An altered level of arousal (awareness) with acute onset may be caused by various factors (i.e. structural arousal alteration, metabolic arousal alteration, psychogenic arousal alteration). Structural causes are divided according to whether the original location of the pathologic condition is above or below the tentorial plate. Pathologic processes include infectious, vascular, neoplastic, traumatic, congenital (developmental), degenerative, polygenic, and metabolic causes. Metabolic causes are further divided into hypoxia, electrolyte disturbances, hypoglycemia, drugs, and toxins (both endogenous and exogenous). All the systemic diseases that eventually produce nervous system dysfunction are part of this metabolic category. Alterations in arousal range from slight drowsiness to coma" (page 356).

5-0 out of 5 stars A postive guide in a complex world.
Understanding pathophysiology requires years of study and practice, believe me I know. As a practicing RN/APRN and pathophysiology teacher at a local college - I have come to rely on Huether & McCance to guide myself and students through this complex subject. Give the book and authors the credit due for making sense of a difficult and oft times frustrating topic. "Understanding Pathophysiology" is everything the title promotes it to be.

1-0 out of 5 stars Graduate nursing student
Of all books that I read in undergraduate and graduate schools this one is the winner in dullness and difficulty reading. Instead of presenting already complex topics in more comprehansible way, this book just makes matters worse. If you are a student and this book is a requirement, well- good luck. If you are instructor- read this book before you make it a requirement. The only way this book may be a worthwhile to read if you are planning to write pathophysiology book and want to know what writing style to avoid.

2-0 out of 5 stars good info, bad organization
The information in this book is great, but the organization and editing is horrid. I would be reading along and the text would wander off onto other subjects and eventually drift back to where it started.

If you have to have this book, try and find another one that makes more sense to your head if this one doesn't. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars brings it all together!
This is a fantastic book for med school physiology, especially if you find lecture boring and need a book to bring the dry material into a clinical context. the book presents classic presentations and data, asks questions about the physiology behind the symptoms, and then explains the answers. the explanations are laid out simply using nicely worded paragraphs and incorporating all those nasty equations so that they make sense!

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic book

4-0 out of 5 stars It's all about you
The key to selecting a useful textbook for physiology lies in knowing the depth of knowledge you actually need. Having gone through med school and learnt physiology as part of the course, i actually found that Berne & Levy was really too detailed to use as a primary text. I used B&L, Ganong, and Guyton primarily as references when i needed more in depth detail on certain topics. An excellent book for undergraduates is a text by the author Sherwood. This book gives an excellent conceptual account of human physiology, so that you understand the principles. In books like B&L, it's easy to lose the big picture in all the detail, particularly as a student when it's all new material.

Having said that, i'm now using B&L along with several other texts to study for my anesthesiology exams. It undoubtedly has the best cardiovascular chapter of any physiology text.

Take home message is that if you are studying physiology for postgraduate purposes, you'll probably need B&L as well as several other texts. As a student, i'd recommend using a more basic text and consulting B&L for the fine print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I am a first year CRNA student. This book is fabulous for getting the main point across and leaving nothing out. I would recommend it for any student looking for a great physiology text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I am a 2nd year PhD student in physiology, and throughout nearly all of my courses I found this book to be an excellent reference. Very clear and concise, with much more detail than most other basic physiology texts, which often gloss over important details. Very complete content, nice basic figures and helpful bibliographies. I highly recommend this book to anyone studying physiology as your "go-to book" for basic info in just about any specialization, whether you're a med student, grad student or undergrad. Furthermore, the price is [great]; at less than [$] it is [less costly] than most far-inferior textbooks in any scientific discipline.

4-0 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT TEXTBOOK FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS
I AM A MEDICINE STUDENT AND I FIND IT VERY COMPLETE AND DEPTH. BUT, UNLESS YOU'RE A MEDICINE STUDENT, DO NOT BUY IT. IT COULD CERTAINLY BE TOO COMPLICATED. I THINK THE CARDIOVASCULAR CHAPTER IS ALMOST PERFECT.

I am a pharmacy student, and this is a very thorough text book, but as a study guide I have found that it is mainly boring and useless. Anyone other than a medical student probably should find a better text book. ... Read more
