Book Description

Spatio-temporal pattern formation is a major area of research within the subject of mathematical biology. The topic involves the use of mathematical modelling to analyse how patterns in biology are created and develop. For example, the growth, over time, of the intricate and beautiful patterns on certain sea-shells or the striped markings on a tiger can be modelled and their development predicted in terms of nonlinear mathematical processes. The current volume captures the breadth of recent research into various aspects of spatio-temporal pattern and form, such as development biology, reaction-diffusion systems and morphometrics.

Brings the ideas of the classic On Growth and Form by D'Arcy Thompson, the founding classic of mathematical biology, fully up to date and looks to future developments in the subject.
* Foreword provided by Professor John Tyler Bonner, Princeton University.
* World class collection of internationally renowned contributors from both experimental and theoretical backgrounds

Taking its inspiration from D'Arcy Thompson's classic and still influential volume On Growth and Form, this new volume presents a collection of 21 articles from the Plenary Speakers of the recent D'Arcy Thompson Conference, held at the University of Dundee, 20-24 September 1998. The topics covered include pattern formation in development biology, reaction-diffusion systems, intercellular systems and morphometrics, offering the reader a stimulating blend of theory and experiment.

This book will be of particular interest to bio-mathematicians and development biologists. Paediatric clinicians, evolutionary biologists, orthodontists, anatomists, physiologists and many other members of the biology community will also benefit greatly from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory book
Very good book, everything is simplified, easy introduction into subject, it is almost like being spoon fed.
Pathologic correlation's are given, it does not have all the biochemistry but major subjects are covered and author has conceptualized that makes everything easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book to have re: the beans
For anyone who struggled to understand why the nephron concentrates, then dilutes, then concentrates again the urine, this book will do much to ease your pain. Since medical school I've purchased Editions 1, 3, & 5, just so that I could keep up with my interns & residents. Here's how he does it:
#1: short book, (you know how intimidating those tomes can be)
#2: lots of diagrams
#3: end-of-chapter questions (with answers & explanations)

If you want to understand the Kidney, no matter where you are in your studies or practice, I wholeheartedly recommend this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lifesaver
Renal physiology can be very difficult to truly understand, and yet an understanding of it is essential to understanding so many aspects of physiology, pathology, and pharmacology. Studying diuretics for cardio pharm is nightmarish unless you understand the physiology of the loop of Henle. Vander takes this difficult yet important subject and makes it easy to understand. The book reads extremely quickly, and the flow-charts and diagrams are amazing. I never even opened Berne & Levy for renal phys--I read Vander's book (which is no longer than B&L's renal chapters) and cruised through renal phys. I am writing this review now, a year after I took physiology, because I am now studying for the USMLE Step 1. I have not looked at Vander's book in a year, but I still remember renal phys, and reviewing it now is the easiest part of my studying (the only easy part, in fact). That is because, thanks to Vander, I actually understand renal physiology. A great book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Vander on the kidneys.
For any medical student that needs a comprehensive, but easily understood explanation of the structure and function of kidneys, I highly recommend Renal Physiology by Vander. It is very well written, and covers all the basic principles that you will need to know to understand pathologies associated with the kidneys. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent illustrations and clarity
A well written, nicely illustrated, quite comprehensive book on the female genital tract pathology.

The main plus are the clear illustrations all of which are in colour so it serves as an atlas as well as a textbook (versus the black and white photos of the Blaustein, which in my opinion is a better text).

This is quite recent and so up to date (this ed. was published late 2001/2002). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
This book gives you exactly what it says it does. I believe it is specially made for the quick study of a given subject. If you come to this book expecting to find all answers you'll surelly be disapointed. As the title of the book says here you only find the "principles". For a thorough study you must get a physiology treaty either by the same authors or by Guyton, Ganong... In addition I think this book will be somehow difficult to understand if you are not a medical student because the authors write about a subject as if you already have some concepts on medical subjects as Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Histology, Biochemistry... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lingappa's and Farey's Rules
My name is Marco Antonio Vazquez and I am a physician from Mexico. To tell the truth, "Physiological Medicine" is an excelent book. Unfortunately, there is not an spanish edition. You see, when I was a medical student, I did not read english and I had never had a chance to read a book like this one. I remember that I used to read some good Physiology's books: Berne and Levy, Guyton and Best and Taylor.

In my private practice, because of the clinical cases, I have used this book a lot. This cases makes me think in real human beens with real problems. Because of this situations I think medicine is an art.
In some ways due to this book I have become to be a much more humble physician. I believe that I understand better my own limitations. Nature is quite much more complex that I used to think. In some way, I think that nature defends itself against some of our medical actions.

I really enjoy reading books like this and Lehninger's Biochemistry. It is fantastic to understand the real foundations, how it works our body, from biomolecules to organs and systems. I hope that this very basic knowledge makes me a better physician and human been at last.

DO NOT HESITATE, YOU SHOULD BUY THIS WONDERFUL BOOK¡¡¡¡

5-0 out of 5 stars Physiological Medicine - excellent clinical and basic book
I used this book in a 2nd year medical student course taught by V. Lingappa, and I've read it almost in it's entirety - it's that easy to read and understand. I've never done that with any other text. The clinical pearls are very insightful and helpful to bring clinical relevance to the
material.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone studying physiology
as a primary text or as an excellent resource. It's been very helpful
to me as a medical student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
If you are a medical student and want a refreshing, interesting approach to learning basic physio, this book is a dream!
Fundamental information is explained clearly and thoroughly, clinical examples are given throughout the book, and the author has a very realistic and helpful attitude toward medical knowledge and the practice of medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good bedtime reading (really!)
The words, "I just couldn't put it down!" probably have never been spoken in reference to a textbook, much less a physiology textbook, but I can honestly say that this book was quite a compelling read. The writing style approximates a narrative more than a lecture.

Lingappa and Farey manage to keep the textbook at the perfect level of detail -- not too hot, not too cold, but just right. It is also obvious that a great deal of thought went into organizing the textbook. The clinical correlation boxes are outstanding, and provide tantalizing insights into the world of clinical medicine -- insights that are exceedingly valuable if you're a medical student such as myself. The "Frontiers of Research" and "Summary" sections of each chapter are also extremely helpful (especially if you've gotta lotta cramming to do).

But in my opinion, the best part of the textbook is the case presentations. Through the cases, I not only gained knowledge about physiology, I also learned a great deal about the practice of medicine in general, specifically concerning the constraints within which medicine in this country is currently practiced.

I give this textbook my highest recommendation. Useful even if it's not the required text. . .

4-0 out of 5 stars First Year Medical Student's Thoughts
Overall, this is a very good textbook and Drs. Lingappa and Farey should be commended for the work that they have done. The clinical focus makes the text much more interesting to read. The cases used to introduce each chapter provide good examples of how physiology can be used in a clinical setting and often adhere to the tone of the modern medical environment. The charts and diagrams used to illustrate the concepts do a good job of facilitating and summarizing the knowledge presented in each chapter. As the old adage goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. In all, this textbook provided a very good description of "big picture" physiology. ... Read more

"[Hypoventilation] and hyperventilation influences loss carbon dioxide and water, which effects fluid and electrolytes." (3 mistakes)
