Diagnostic Tests by SPRINGHOUSE
This is an excellent reference guide on the rationale and
specific details of diagnostic medical tests both simple and
complex. The authors provide an extensive forward, a discussion
of collection techniques and precautions. For instance, the
bone marrow aspiration and biopsy is a moderately complicated
procedure aimed at diagnosing leukemias, granulomas, pernicious
anemia, primary and metastatic tumors, the staging of Hodgkin's
disease and evaluation of chemotherapy effectiveness. The
procedure is contraindicated in patients with severe bleeding
disorders. Yellow marrow contains fat cells and connective
tissue; whereas, red marrow contains hematopoiec cells, fat cells
and connective tissue. A detailed Histology of the bone marrow
specimen may detect myelofibrosis, granulomas, lymphomas or
cancer. A hemotology blood and bone marrow report is generated
by the blood laboratory. It shows details of the cell type
and applicable levels of myeloblasts, promyelocytes, myelocytes, metamyelocytes, polymorphs, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes,
monocytes, plasma cells, pronormoblasts, basophilic normoblasts,
polychrom-Normoblasts, Orthochrom. Normoblasts and Reticulum
cellular structures. A diagnostician's detailed interpretation
usually follows the detailed description of cellular types.

Still the best read on the subject
Most books on whiplash have such a limited scope, or are so out-dated by the time they are pubished, that they do not offer much to the lawyer, insurance adjuster, or physician. Despite being published in 1999, this book remains the Bible of Whiplash, being more comprehensive than any other book, explaining everything from facet joints to low-velocity collisions to psychosocial and treatment issues.

I notice that Ferrari is the most publsihed person on whiplash in the scientific literature. This adds a credibility to the work that no other author can match. As a Defence lawyer, meeting the Daubert criteria is critical. I thus recommend this book for Defence lawyers and all medical experts who want to stay credible in their work.

Doesn't weed out the junk science!
I have read Ferrari's book and it is incredibly biased against the phenomenon of whiplash. The overwhelming balance of the engineering and medical literature on whiplash is clear that whiplash-associated injuries are very real injuries.

What is missing is a critical review of the quality of research in this field. When the insurance industry sets out to do research on whiplash, the sole purpose is to present biased information which can be used by defense lawyers in court. Much of this "junk science" has been refuted overwhelmingly in the medical and engineering literature.

Anyone interested in the true nature of whiplash should become familiar with the work of Panjabi et al. at Yale University. This group has performed crash testing with human cadavers and looks at the damage to facet joints of the cervical spine (neck) even in low speed collisions.

Ferrari's bias is suspicious, to say the least, and his articles in the literature are weak and often without merit. He has claimed that TMJ (jaw joint) injuries in whiplash accidents do not exist. Perhaps Mr. Ferrari, who has probably never experienced a whiplash injury firsthand, would be willing to volunteer as a human dummy in crash testing to test the hypotheses put forward in this pro-insurance company book. But then, he might feel compelled to seek the truth.

Remember, while greed is at the heart of whiplash malingerers, it is also at the heart of the auto insurance industry (we might call it capitalistic or the "profit motive"). However, long after whiplash victims settle their legal cases with the insurance companies, there is a strange event: chronic pain! If litigation and fraud were the driving force behind whiplash, why would whiplash victims continue to seek medical care years and years after their cases settled?

The answer is clear: insurnce companies don't want to pay the 95% of claims which are legitimate. Certainly fraud exists. However, it does not exist to the point that insurance companies would have us believe.

Listen: Suppose I take two wine glasses filled with wine and strike them together as hard as I can, breaking the glasses? Suppose now that I videotape this event with a high-speed (high-quality) recorder? What happens?

Answer: The glasses shatter, and for a split second, the wine stays still.

Now suppose I hit the two glasses together as hard as I can, but not quite hard enough to break the glasses. What happens now?

Answer: The wine goes all over the place, with no damage to the glasses!

Compare to a low speed collision: Does no damage to a car really mean there is no damage to the occupants?

OF COURSE NOT! But that is what this book would like you to believe.

Nonsense. Utter nonsense!

Ferrari - King of junk science
When you read Mr. Ferrari's attempt at an Encyclopedia, someone who was not familiar with his works would be impressed with the title of the treatise and some of the included tabloid information. Unfortunately, his compilation of works is only of the junk science that (mostly) he and other defense-sponsored quacks try to espouse on the complex issue of whiplash injuries. The articles in this issue are out-of-the mainstream, referenced among themselves like an inter-bred family, and completely out of touch with the 10,000 or so published, peer-reviewed works on the subject of whiplash.
For instance, his results of rear-impact collisions in Lithuania suggest you are actually better off if you were in a car crash than the normal population walking down the street - which is quite different from the real-world epidemiology. This text should be a bible only for defense attorneys, and those who have no clue as to what actually happens in the cervical acceleration/deceleration syndrome, are trying to 'pull a fast one' on an uneducated jury, or don't really care. Get Croft or Nordhoff's text if you want ot know what really happens in auto collisions. This trash is a waste of your money.

May Ferrari and buddies get a real good WHIPLASH injury
As a whiplash chronic pain sufferer, all I can say for these ignorant folks is "may you get a good one"...."may you get to know whiplash real intimately"...I am usually a very kind hearted person however, these people with their erroneous and damaging opinions should get a taste of what whiplash is really like for some of us. I have endured so much pain and to have these supposed "experts" express their views is incredibly frustrating...so, perhaps God will provide some justice...

The authoratative source on whiplash knowledge
This book has it all. It does not matter whether you are a chiropractor, physician, dentist, psychologist, lawyer, or therapist. This book takes you through every aspect of whiplash in a highly readable and thoroughly referenced fashion. You do not have to be a specialist in any particular field, because the book starts from ground and works its way to the peak of knowledge of whiplash. Even though it was published in 1999, so much of the book is ahead of its time, and it covers so much of the fundamental literature on whiplash, you become quickly familiar with the whole scope of this controversy.

For lawyers, who have to struggle to get this information all in one source, look no further. It is all here and you need no other source.

I've read the various criticisms of this book on this site. It is clear that many people do not recognise just how effectively and fairly The Whiplash Enccyclopedia treats the topics at issue. There is NOTHING in this book that degrades patients, and NOTHING that puts whiplash in the psychiatric realm. Those who think the book does, have not read it, or are just too ignorant to understand it. The book is on much higher ground than any I have seen before. Those who read the book with an open mind are instantly educated, and can leave others in the dark. Bottom line is that you do not understand whiplash until you have read this book. Much better than BRS Physiolog, a must have!
I am a graduate of Ross University School of Medicine and presently a 1-PGY residence at a major, top-tier U.S. teaching hospital. While taking basic science physiology, I began reading this book to supplement/review for exams. Not only is this a wonderful text to supplement the lectures but will help you aced the physiology section of the USMLE 1.

A very well put together text book!
I purchased this book to study for a CLEP-type exam and found it to be an excellent reference not only for my studies, but also for general research and review of various diseases that I encounter in my job. When we have a critically ill patient, I now turn to this text to help understand exactly what is going on. Excellent summary of the vast literature.
As Y.C. Fung put it, biomechanics is a field characterized by a vagueness of definitions and abundance of literature. I was feeling hopelessly lost trying to get a handle on both the engineering aspects and biological phenomena. Martin and Burr have summarized the entire field very efficiently. It would help if you have a previous background in solid mechanics, but even that has been explained in a simple fashion. The exercises at the end are what attracted me most. They look very similar to actual problems in research and doing them sincerely is sure to enhance your understanding and appreciation of the field. This textbook is based on 4 previous editions of Pathophysiology: Adaptations and Alterations in Function. It has been carefully revised and updated. The text can be used in nursing schools, allied health courses,including occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy. It also can be used in Advanced Practice Nursing courses. The "Bers book" - Better than ever!
Here it is! The second edition of the classic "Bers book". Still easy to read, up to date information with many new references and a whole new chapter on action potential & ion channels in the heart. It is longer that the first edition but still focused including more than 170 excellent figures. The new edition is even more valuable than the first one, not only for students, Post-Docs, but also for experienced researchers. It is a must read for everyone who works in the field of heart research (physiology, electrophysiology, molecular biology, pathophysiology etc.). This is the reason why it is generally accepted a classic and - without question - deserves all five stars. Thank you Don Bers!

Can't wait for an updated edition
Don Bers' precious book sets a standard for making accessible a complicated research area to a specialized scientific audience. The book does not aim at attracting readers from the general public. It is written both with scientific accuracy and in a very accessible language and must be considered a "first-read" for students in biomedical science who start working on projects in cardiovascular research. And also the more advanced scientist will frequently use this great source of information for reference. It is a pity that a more current edition is not (yet?) available.
