5-0 out of 5 stars A must!
Where do you go when you want to know something related to the human body, find out what cosmetic surgery is, or magnetic brain stimulation, or perhaps what is the Hinduism view of the body. Today answer is obviously: you log on the internet. The only problem is that you don't know how serious and reliable the information is across the variety of links. It can be good or bad. If you're not an expert, it's tough to decide, isn't?

Colin Blakemore and Sheila Jennett, two distinguished British Professors of Physiology, with the help of 350 experts, did a beautiful job in editing an authoritative and fascinating guide, which covers every aspect of the human body, including many that you would have never thought about. It includes an impressive range of academic domains (e.g., Anthropology, Medical Sciences, Psychology, Religion, Philosophy, Sociology to name a few) that makes the book captivating. In addition, this impressive knowledge is readily accessible to both the specialist and non-specialist reader.

The Oxford Companion to the Body is clearly a book that can have many different uses. It has its place in your school, college as well as in your lab. I myself have it as one of my favorite bedside reading, and given the number of pages (753) and issues covered (over 1000 entries), it's going to be a great companion for a long time. ... Read more

Book Description

Today's resources on bloodstain analysis are still based on methods that were derived in the 1920s.Although medical and clinical research have provided a growing body of information on blood composition and behavior, this information has been ignored in favor of historical bloodstain analysis methods-until now. With 25 years of experience in the field, author Anita Wonder shows how to use these new methods for interpreting bloodstains, including non-Newtonian fluid behavior (a process that does not conform to Sir Isaac Newton's laws of motion) and three-dimensional dispersion modeling.

Blood Dynamics focuses on how to accurately identify eight bloodstain pattern types and their permutations. It covers every aspect of bloodstain analysis, and shows how some standard practices of reconstruction are not only unnecessary for identification of blood dynamics, but can even be misleading.

This book presents completely new scientific evaluations of blood dynamics and will fundamentally change the way in which bloodstains are interpreted. As such, it will be required reading for anyone who deals with blood evidence at the crime scene, in the lab, or in the courtroom.

*Presents groundbreaking new methods for interpreting bloodstains, including non-Newtonian fluid behaviour and three-dimensional dispersion modelling

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
This is a great book for anyone who needs to get a good understanding of the physiological basis for various clinical disorders. The author has described the various topics in great detail, and has put more stress on getting the concepts right than anything else. One thing is worth mentioning though, that is, before reading this book, it is advisable to review physiology, biochem, and general pathology (use some brief reviews e.g., Lippincott's. etc.). ... Book Description

Dendrites form the major receiving part of neurons. It is within these highly complex, branching structures that the real work of the nervous system takes place. The dendrites of neurons receive thousands of synaptic inpites from other neurons. But dendrites do more than simply collect and funnel these signals to the soma and axon; they shape and integrate the inputs in complex ways.Despite being discovered over a century ago, dendrites received little research attention until the early 1950s. Over the past few years there has been a dramatic explosion of interest in the function of these beautiful structures. Recent new research has developed our understanding of the properties of dendrites, and their role in neuronal function. This is the first book devoted exclusively and comprehensively to dendrites. Its main aim is to gather the new information on dendrites into a single volume, with contributions written by leading researchers in the field. It presents a survey of the current state of our knowledge of dendrites, from their morphology and development through to their electrical, chemical, and computational properties. As such it will not only be of interest to researchers and graduate-level students in neuroscience, but will also be useful to researchers in computer science and IT, psychology, physiology, and biophysics. ... Book Description

Osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative disease associated with joint pain and loss of joint function. It has an estimated incidence of 4 out of every 100 people and significantly reduces the quality of life in affected individuals. The major symptoms are chronic pain, swelling and stiffness; severe, chronic joint pain is often the central factor that causes patients to seek medical attention. Within the affected joint, there is focal degradation and remodelling of articular cartilage, new bone formation (osteophytes) and mild synovitis.

Several mechanisms are thought to contribute to osteoarthritic joint pain. These include mild synovial inflammation, bone oedema, ligament stretching, osteophyte formation and cartilage-derived mediators. Changes in joint biomechanics and muscle strength also influence the severity and duration of joint pain in osteoarthritis. Within the nervous system, the relative contributions of peripheral afferent nociceptive fibres and central mechanisms remain to be defined, and there is limited information on the phenotype of sensory neurons in the OA joint. Importantly, there is no relation between clinical severity, as measured by radiographic changes, and the presence and severity of joint pain. Patients with severe joint pain may have normal joint architecture as determined by X-ray, whereas patients with considerable evidence of joint remodelling may not have significant joint pain. Treatments for osteoarthritic joint pain include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory compounds, exercise, corrective shoes and surgical intervention. There remains a critical need for improved control of joint pain in osteoarthritis.

This book brings together contributions from key investigators in the area of osteoarthritic joint pain.  It covers the clinical presentation of joint pain, the pathways involved in joint pain, osteoarthritis disease processes and pain, experimental models and pain control. The discussions provide insights into the nature of osteoarthritic joint pain, identify key studies needed to advance understanding of the problem, highlight possible intervention points and indicate future pathways towards a better treatment of osteoarthritic joint pain.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disapponted
This book was confusing at times. Not as clearly written as the review on the back cover says. I read the Lange Cardiovascular Physiology book and it was written much better. I am probably being overly generous by giving this book 3 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gave me a good understanding of Pulmonary Physiology
I have this book and the West book. There is not question this book is better. West waves his hands at a lot of problems but never works them out in a detailed way. That isn't the way I learn. This book takes you through detailed solutions so you can better understand the concepts involved. I didn't have time to read the whole book but whenever I was confused by a professor I could look it up in this book and figure the problem out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Basics and More
This is a wonderful book for anyone looking to learn pulmonary physiology, especially physio majors and medical students. It starts at a very basic level and proceeds through some of the more complicated topics (at least for me!!). I'm a first year medical student, and our first medical subject after basic sciences was pulmonary physiology. The professors recommended West, but a friend of mine was a physiology major in undergrad and recommended Levitzky. After reading the book, I was extremely happy with it. West may be more well known, but Levitzky's book provides a concise and complete explanation of the relavent topics, including structure and mechanics of the lungs, gas diffusion, and control and regulation of breathing. Very readable and accessible to people with little to no experience in physiology and respiration.

4-0 out of 5 stars very good
If you need to learn respiratory physiology then this is a much better book than West's respiratory physiology book I believe. Dont get me wrong, they are very good books from scientific point of view but I think Levitzky's book is better for teaching students. Perfect book for respiratory therapy and medical students. ... Book Description

During sleep, the mammalian brain generates an orderly progression of low frequency oscillations. The nature of these oscillations changes as the brain moves from sleep onset into deep sleep.Although readily measured and recorded, the underlying neural mechanisms involved and the purpose of these oscillations have remained unclear. However, as we learn more about the properties of neurons in the thalamus and cerebral cortex and their interactions, it has become possible to suggest a role for these occurrences. This book reviews the molecular components and ionic mechanisms underlying sleep oscillations, including their distorsion into epileptic seizures. It reviews the properties of ion channels, synaptic interactions, intrinsic cellular behaviour, and how these elements assemble into oscillating circuits and networks. The precision experimental data collected has provided a foundation for the study of dynamic activity in the central nervous systems and it is now possible to suggest a role for thalamocortical oscillations in memory consolidation. Thalamocortical Assemblies is for neuroscientists, neurobiologists, physiologists and other researchers interested in sleep and memory processes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I have read numerous other books on acid base and electrolyte disorders, but this book helped to clarify many questions I have had about interpreting ABGs, and electrolyte abnormalities. This book should be required reading for all medical students and residents!

5-0 out of 5 stars Got Acid-Base Anxiety? Buy This Book!
With this marvelous book, Dr Abelow has proven himself to be the proverbial "Bill Nye, The Science Guy" of Acid Base. Understanding Acid-Base is the perfect book for medical students, residents, and anyone hoping to gain a thorough understanding of Acid-Base quickly and painlessly! The text is clear, beautifully written, and surprisingly interesting. It reads fast, and - like Costanzo's Physiology - seems to anticipate your questions as you read along (the sign of a great teacher). Buy this book, AND KEEP IT! You'll find yourself going back to it again and again.

Book Description

This clear and accessible textbook introduces students to the brain's remarkable capacity for memory. It begins with a history of thinking and research on the biological bases of memory, highlighting discoveries about the brain made in a "Golden Era" of neuroscience around the turn of the 20th century. This is followed by presentation of our current understanding of the neurobiology of memory, organized into sections corresponding to the book's four major themes. The first is Connection, and it considers how memory is based on alterations in the communication between nerve cells. Research on the physiology and biochemistry of neurons has revealed a cascade of molecular events and structural changes that enhance or weaken the connectivity of nerve cells in support of memory. The second theme is Cognition, which considers the psychological structure of memory.Early work on this topic involved controversy over the basic cognitive processes that underlie memory, and modern research has shown that these characterizations reflect distinctions among qualitatively different forms of memory. The third theme is Compartmentalization, the notion that the different forms of memory are accomplished by distinct brian systems.Recent research has revealed parallel memory systems that separately mediate our ability for conscious recollection, our capacity to acquire skills and habits, and our acquisition of emotional attachments and aversions. The fourth theme is Consolidation, the process by which memories are transformed from a labile trace into a permanent store. Scientists have shown that there are two distinct stages in memory consolidation, one involving cellular mechanisms that underlie a fixation of changes in the neuronal connection strengths and the other involving a reorganization and restruction of the circuits that store and retrieve memories. The book assumes little background knowledge from biology or psychology, and is intended as a text for use in undergraduate courses on memory and cognitive science, and for early graduate students in neuroscience, cognitive science, or biology. It encapsulates the major concepts in the field, and makes this area of research accessible to students who pursue a variety of related disciplines. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Reference!
This book is an absolute must have for any nursing student or new grad RN. Its organization and plethora of information is unsurpassed by any care-planning source I've encountered thus far. It incorporates JACHO approved nursing diagnoses with standardized outcome criteria, interventions, and rationales. Sections are organized by systemic disorders and precede each medical-surgical condition or procedure with a brief pathophysiology, etiology, and guidelines for patient assessment (i.e. patient history, physical findings, diagnostic studies, and potential complications). Brief discharge planning checklists follow each medical-surgical condition or procedure. Care plans are general; yet allow individualization to your specific client's needs. Compared to other care planning texts, this is by far a more detailed, flexible means of developing goal-directed and action-oriented plans for the daily quality care of your patients. ...
