4-0 out of 5 stars excelent
To make it short: this is a very good book on Pediatric care. It includes most info that you will need to work succesfully on the PICU floor. Mainly for nurses, but majority of the text can be of use for neonatal/pediatric respiratory therapists. With a little improvement and a hardbound cover this book deserves a five star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Manual of Pediatric Critical Care
This book has been extremely helpful in my practice as a PCCU nurse. It gives detailed information in an easy to read format for quick reference. I carry it with me always when I go to work. I highly recommend it!

2-0 out of 5 stars truly disappointed
I recently began working in a pediatric ICU. Although I had 9 years of pedi experience as a floor nurse, I knew I would need a solid reference to help in my transition to the many new procedures and medications I would need to learn. After obtaining this book, I was disappointed by what little it had to offer. I searched for some information on some very basic critical care issues (i.e. CVP) and found it woefully lacking. My only assumption is this text is written with the understanding that you own the larger more detailed book. If you are new to the critical enviroment and need basic, clear information, you may be better served with the larger more informative text. As for me, I will continue to refer to my old general pedi text, which currently is a better source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Manual of Pediatric Critical Care
I heard the author of this book at a conference, and KNEW I had to have her manual. She presents relevant information in such a clear, concise, and interesting manner. I will use this book as a teaching aide for my pediatric nursing course.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for all PICU RNs
This book is a must for any nurse working in a pediatric intensive care setting. It is an excellent resource that provides quick answers to questions! I take mine with me to work and it has come in handy numerous times! As a new nurse, I've been told by the more experienced nurses that this book will help me greatly and they were right! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars filled with errors
This book is filled with errors. The very first week I had it in class, I noticed several just in the genetics chapter alone! I was hoping to have an OB book to keep as a reference when I'm done with nursing school, but I don't feel that I'd be able to trust this book. If I found many errors in an area that I'm familiar with, how many errors are there that I'm unable to discern since I'm not yet familiar with that material? Many of my classmates found additional errors, and also feel that the book is untrustworthy. It's too bad, because I'm sure that the book does contain worthwhile information. I'm sorry that I wasted the money on this book. I plan to invest my money in a medical OB book instead. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
This should be required reading for any physician caring for the breastfeeding mother or the breastfed baby. With all of the mythology surrounding breastfeeding and the wide range of advice given to nursing mothers, it is essential that practitioners give accurate, informed advice. Reading this book will allow health care professionals to do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and educational for the medical profession
As a gynecologist based in Spain, I found this book extremely helpful while counseling my patients about breastfeeding, and while breastfeeding myself. I think most obstetrical textbooks do not cover enough the aspect of breastfeeding, and numerous questions remain to be answered, some as simple as: both breasts or one breast?. These simple questions, however, are an important source of stress to new mothers. Apart from that, the more "medical" aspects of the book are also exceptional. A must for all medical professionals involved in pregnancy, birth and infant care.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession
I am a IBCLC and work in a NICU with very small premature &/or sick newborns. As a nurse I very frequently use Dr Lawrence's book when there is a conflict with a doctor over the care of our breastfeeding babies. Dr Lawrence's book is compleatly research based and written with authority --- no touchy/feely all professional. It is a great book to use to study for the lactation exam !!! Get the newest copy date you can find -- doctors respect new information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Medical Professionals and Mothers
This is an amazing text that answers almost every question the reader or a patient can bring to the table. Easy to read with good references. This is a must have for anyone who treats lactating women. As a mother I found the book to be very helpful, as a medical professional this book has been an excellent reference when treating lactating women. Definitely 5 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession
I am a Registered Dietitian and have promoted breastfeeding to women for years. It wasn't until I became a breastfeeding mother that I wanted to be more informed on the subject. This book provides the how and why on specific benefits of lactation. If you do not have a medical background, be aware that there is a great deal of medical language. I am very pleased with my purchase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book for serious Pediatric ICU Nurses
I was lucky to get this book at a used-and-reduced price; however, that doesn't change the fact that the book is outstanding in it's content. I own Hazinski's pediatric ICU "bible", but this book is SO much more detailed. If you want to learn peds cardiology...REALLY learn not only the congenital malformations but the surgery for each malformation with detailed diagrams in a step-by-step process, then this is the book for you. Each section starts with detailed embryology and expands your knowledge base from there. Most of the PICU nurses I work with have grabbed this book out of my nursing bag to use as a reference many times in the month I've owned it. They are all planning to buy it in the near future. This is a great book even if you don't plan to take the AACN certification exam for RNC. I highly recommend it! ... Read more

Book Description

Two books in one, Maternal-Child Nursing covers both the maternity and pediatrics portions of the nursing curriculum. A condensed format makes this book ideal for programs that teach this content in an extremely abbreviated time period. Written by expert educators in both arenas, this text provides a consistent level of depth and accuracy as well as a student-friendly writing style. Current issues and trends are addressed through the use of community nursing care plans, expanded health promotion content, enhanced communication tips, and parent/child teaching boxes.

* Want to Know boxes guide the student in teaching women, parents, and children about self-care and follow-up home care.

* Critical to Remember boxes alert the student to vital safety and care issues.

* Critical Thinking exercises challenge the student to apply learning to practice. Suggested answers and rationales appear at the end of chapters.

* Procedure boxes highlight step-by-step instructions for common clinical nursing tasks.

* Communication Cues offer tips for obtaining information from women, children, and parents, including probing questions and other practical examples.

* Nursing Care Plans guide the student through assessment, nursing diagnoses, expected outcomes, nursing interventions, rationales, and evaluation for specific maternity and pediatric conditions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hate this book
Have you ever needed to look up a word for extra clarification, flipped back to the glossary and found what you were looking for? Can't do that with this book - no glossary. Have you ever read textbooks that had bolded words to make them easier to find? McKinney never did. They italisized their words making them HARDER to find. It's the wordiest book I've ever read and I have 3 degrees. It's overpriced and should be banned from college bookstores.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand, terrific illustrations/pictures
This is a reference book I come back to again and again. The text is written in a no-nonsense straight forward manner. The technical terms are all defined in an easy to use glossary at the beginning of each chapter. This book describes every treatment step in detail in easy to understand language. Its the first book I turn to when dealing with matern-child treatment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know...
This book is packed full of everything you need to know about breastfeeding. Even better, the information is easy to find, which as any new mom will tell you, is essential those first hectic weeks and throughout a baby's infancy. Before giving the book to a friend who's expecting, I wanted to make sure it would stand up to any question she would have and any situation she might encounter. So I thought back to my own experiences, first with my daughter, then with my twin boys. Every doubt I had, every challenge I faced, I found easily in the index, the nicely outlined contents, or by flipping through the pages. The fact that this book is written by practicing RNs who have been in maternity for a number of years should be a great comfort to any breastfeeding mom. I especially like the sidebars in the grey boxes, many of them with personal tidbits from the co-authors' own breastfeeding experiences. Reading them, I found myself remembering the joys and challenges of nursing my babies. I wish this book had been available to me. I will happily pass it along to my friend and recommend it to other moms.
