This book is an excellent resource for the RN practicing in the OR. It covers state of the art technology while discussing basic concepts of nursing and how they are adapted to care of the patient in the OR. The Gold Standard reference text for Child neurology
This is a reference text for Child Neurology. However, it is quite "readable" and can be finished in a month's rotation, if one is motivated to do so. It is very clearly written, but does not have many tables or illustrations. Still, it is the best and most current reference text available for Child Neurology.

Excellent textbook
I was recently introduced to this textbook by a child neurologist while I was on an elective at my medical school; he had used an earlier edition during his training and spoke glowingly of it. It's a quite comprehensive text written in a very clear style (a boon for tired eyes and tired minds at the end of the day), and its fairly reasonable price makes it accessible to medical students and residents. Another excellent child neurology book is the one by Berg, however, it has not been updated and there are apparently no plans to release another edition. In short, Menkes' and Sarnat's book is a very valuable addition to the aspiring child neurologist's library. ... Read more

If it is not required for your class, don't buy it.
I bought this book because it was listed as an additional text book for my pediatric nursing class. I never even used it. My instructor didn't really teach from the subjects in the workbook, and since the reason I bought it was to help me pass the class, I really had no use for it.

This is an excellent textbook, period. It provides an excellent balance between scientific background and practical knowledge. Chapters are concise, well-illustrated, and each chapter concludes with a question/anwer discussion format which mimics the conversational style of the best lecturers. Contagious in our PICU
I am a 1-year experienced RN who is not only new to pediatrics, but also new to critial care, coming from adult med/surg. A friend of mine in the PICU lent me her Hazinski manual (the smaller edition) my first week in the PICU, calling it the "Bible". I have to say that I have dog-eared her book, referring to it practically every day when I get home. She has finally asked for it back, and so I now must get my own copy! It has been a Godsend to me. We have several copies of the larger edition on our unit, which is very comprehensive, so I have decided to purchase that one instead. Additionally, many other nurses on our unit owns one (it's contagious!). Just about everything you could want to know is in the book, and it doesn't speak to you as though you already know peds. critical care; it is truly an educational book in the best sense of the word. The inner covers have quick charts to refer to vital information, heart rates, respiratory rates, BSA Nomogram, fluid maintenance, resuscition equipment, etc. Our Education Department refers to them in orientation classes. The only thing I would love to see is a chapter on the very absolute basics, such as I&O's (which is included, but as part of chapters on dehydration, renal, cardiovascular, etc.), assessment of the critically ill child, skills, the key things to look for and report to the physician, etc. Just one small chapter like this for the very beginner. It would have been very helpful to someone like me in my first few weeks, and I believe a solid foundation is the best ground upon which to learn. I hope anyone buying this book enjoys it as much as my colleagues and I do. ... Read more
