Book Description

Respected scholars contribute chapters to this comprehensive volume that provide state-of-the-art nursing care for families. Based upon papers presented at the Second International Conference on Family Nursing, it offers significant directions for cross-cutting issues in practice, education research, and theory to bridge the gap between perceived needs and expectations of families and the practice of nursing of families.Among the diverse and compelling issues explored are policy and economic issues, theory development, research methodology (sampling and scoring family data, practice issues, and education), and contemporary topics such as cross-cultural concerns, HIV/AIDS, feminist perspectives on family nursing research, and homeless mothers and their children.A final section utilizes meta-analysis techniques to answer the question, "Does family intervention make a difference?" This volume will be a valuable resource for graduate students and faculty of nursing, family studies, health services, and social work programs.Clinicians, and others interested in the most recent developments in the field of family nursing, will also benefit from this outstanding volume. "The strengths of this book are many. . . . The contributors are leaders in the family nursing and health care field. This book belongs on the shelf of serious family health care professionals, whether they practice in the clinical area, conduct research, teach, or are involved in policymaking. The book also provides a good reference for graduate students in any health care discipline. I am proud that nurses, along with other family social scientists, are embracing the family as a unit of care/analysis, and this collection represents some of the latest thinking toward this end." --Family Relations ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Has never been a help for my nursing needs on the job
This was a poor purchase. As a nurse getting back into the field, I required a handy pocket-sized book to carry with me to have lab values and other valuable handy information at a moment's notice. This was not the help I looked to receive. The labs, nothing highly unusual, were not available here. Any other information presented was not worth a purchase price plus shipping. The cheaply bound spiral paper tore from the binding immediately. It is better to carry a small notepad and jot some needed information from a med-surg book and whatever needed info you can find on the 'Net. Conciseness was a priority, but this did not provide some basic info I require on the job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely perfect
I am a student nurse. This is the best investment I have ever made. Porter's Pocket Guide goes with me to clinical and answers my questions about drugs, lab values, ABGs, assessments and more. You'll love this book that really fits in your pocket!

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and easily portable reference for nurses
This is such a practical size for easy use - it measures only 3.5" x 5.5" - initially it contains a listing of commonly used drugs - generic/brand names - so at a glance and with ease you can check drugs out; it has a more detailed review of each, with dose, contraindications etc. It goes on to show charts of EKGs and shows common distortions; then compatibility charts for both IV and oral drugs - those which are not compatible with one another are in red, so easy to spot potential problems. It charts height/weight, lab values, formulas, infusion rates, signs and symptoms of electrolyte imbalance...a 'complete' drug index at the end, showing brands and generics, and finally, life support charts (VF, tachycardia, shock etc) and the use/dosage of various drugs in these situations...a totally cool and practical book for 'on the job' use - and the text is plain and simple, and ideal for both students and qualified nurses - I am an RN who has taken a short career break, and wanted a concise 'review' to revise what I know before going back on the job - and also being able to use it once there - this is it! ...
