5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for nights on-call in the NICU!
This book, particularly the new 5th edition (released in August, 2003) is a must-have for on-call nights in the NICU. Although not as complete in terms of information as a full textbook, this book contains a blurb on nearly every topic one might encounter in the NICU. It is also surprisingly up to date for a textbook, containing the latest standards of care on controversial topics such as PPHN, use of ECMO and BPD, plus lots of other conditions.

This is no longer a spiral-bound book, which has positives and negatives. On the positive side, it's probably more durable long-term - no more ripping of pages and holes out of the spiral. On the negative side, it's harder to keep your page open without bending the spine out of shape.

This is by far the best on-call reference manual for neonatology. It's highly recommended by everyone I speak with, from staff to fellows to residents. I would recommend it as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Always helpfull
All informations which are needed to work at an neonatal intensive care unit are in this book.
The chapters are clearly organized and the text is structured strictly to ensure that information can be quickly found.
Hopefully there will be anew edition soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nicely done concise reference for the on-call physician.
This is a nicely written, well organized quick reference text for the practicing physician, or resident in training. I was impressed by the amount of clearly presented practical information. Definitely a good book to check for a quick suggestion for response to a clinical situation. I wish there had been a book like this one when I was a resident.

5-0 out of 5 stars a complete textbook on pediatric problems
This is the book every post-graduate ought to read during residency days in pediatric ward. It helps boost clinical acumen by making diagnosis at the bedside with a very logical approach. It is excellent while describing the diseases of kidney, heart and nervous system. After going through the chapters in detail it infuses a kind of confidence in making diagnosis; and coming to differential diagnosis for a number of presentations of various illnesses. Sometimes, i feel it is a must not only for dealing with complicated and day to day problems but for passing examinations too. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars very informative
when my daughter was born prematurely at 29 weeks and 6 days gestation, i was devastated. i didn't know where to find information on premature babies. it was only after my baby came home from the endless days in the hospital, then i found this book. this book would have helped me if my baby were still in the NICU, because it provided a lot of information on NICU, and all the procedures and medical terms. it also would had saved me from looking so stupid in front of the doctors. overall, this book is highly recommended to all parents of preemies, especially if they are still in the NICU.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of both worlds - Informative and caring!
Even though I was an ICU nurse (adult) I was not prepared for the world I entered after my daughter was born at 26 weeks. When my daughter's medical conditions were explained to me the nurse in me wanted to know more so I searched the internet for help. Explanations were difficult to find and overly clinical or overly simplified. The mommy side needed reassurance and straight forward explanations. I purchased 2 books and found this one to be superior. The doctor's perspective and the parent's perspective are both given for each stage/situation as it arises. Up to date statistics and medical explanations are given with a clear, but caring demeanor. The question answer format was great! And major medical conditions are spotlighted which makes comprehending easy. I wish I had purchased this book sooner during the hospital stay. There is some information on the home stage, but not a lot. It may be better to puchase another book for that stage. I highly recommend this book and at $2200 a day the hospitals should be able to afford giving one to each preemie's parents in the NICU!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
During the five months our son has been in the NICU, this book has been absolutely invaluable. For nearly every ailment or condition preemies face, there is a very comprehensive, easy to understand explaination of treatments and long term impact. The book is organized chronilogically, from the time before birth until preschool and beyond. It is useful both when reading for the first time and as a reference, due to a very complete index. No parent of a NICU baby, especially a long-term NICU baby, should go without this book. If I could give it six stars, I would.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference for Parents of Preemies
My parents bought this for my husband and I two weeks ago when our little girl was born at 29 weeks. We have both found this book very helpful. My husband read is constantly while I was still hospitalized and I have been reading it since I came home. The NICU is an overwhelming place, and the nurses and doctors do their best to explain things in terms us non-medical people can understand. This book has thus far proven to be an excellent source we can reference on our own. It explains things in lay terms and the glossary in the back is excellent. If we don't understand something the nurse has told us, we just find it in this book and read on it. It has really helped to keep us calm and informed.

I definately recommend this book. We will keep this book for as long as we need it and I'm sure it will continue to be helpful as our little blessing grows up.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book kept me calm while in the hospital!
I delivered my daughter at 33 weeks by emergency C-section. During the next few weeks of staying at the hospital and spending time in the "special care" nursery, I read this book in the hospital guest room in between nursery visits. It was wonderful, and helped me keep my sanity. It explains all the high-tech stuff you'll see, talks about common problems in preemies, and puts everything into common language. Often I understood what they told me in the nursery, then forgot it once I left... sleep deprivation and stress does that to a person!... this book always had the answers I needed. If you are a new parent of a preemie, or know someone who is, I highly recommend this book! ... Read more

Organic or regular baby food? White or wheat bread? Yogurt or ice cream?Parents often wonder how best to feed their families, but the wondering is over with The Family Nutrition Book: Everything You Need to Know About Feeding Your Children--From Birth Through Adolescence. The beloved William Sears and his wife, Martha (a nurse), teach you how to become your own family nutritionist. Parents of eight children and well-known authors of more than a dozen childcare books, the Searses offer the solid advice on breastfeeding, beginning solids, and feeding picky eaters you'd expect. But more than that, they provide a crash course in overall nutrition. You'll learn how the body works, how to read food labels, what ingredients to look for (and which to avoid), how to trim fat from your diet, what makes up a balanced diet (not just the "food pyramid"), which foods are thought to prevent cancer, and more. The Searses also offer helpful food lists: good fats, best proteins, top 10 complex carbohydrates, and top 12 family foods, to name a few. You'll even get favorite Sears family recipes to help you get started on the road to healthy eating. It's all here, and it's all mixed with a healthy dose of passion for eating well. So you can show your children--by example--how to stay healthy and feel great. --Kelley Smith ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a very useful and complete book
Again written in a very easy-to-read way, this book is a very complete nutrition guide. It gives you the why's and how's of the differnet food groups and its very eye opening about comercial products and the way so called "healthy products" are marketed. After reading the book I have found myself in a better position to make informed decisions about what I'm buying and the way I'm cooking. The Sears give you a complete perspective without getting in the controversy of whether you should be a vegeterian or not, which I found very important so people of different believes and eating philosophies can enjoy the book equally. I particularly enjoy the sections of feeding your baby and toddler. They very complete and helpful. The book doesn't have recipes or anything but it has some cool ideas. I keep refering back to it everytime need to check in the nutritional information of different foods, or just when I need to give a boost to my health-awareness. It's very well documented (research references wise) and I particularly recommend it for people interested in cancer preventive styles of living.

5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting and eye opening nutrition book
This book was interesting to read (and I am NOT a nutrition nut). I especially like the way it is divided into managable chapters that tackle a particular concept (fish, oils, brain foods, anti-cancer foods, vegetables, milk, yogurt, etc.)

It takes potentially daunting concepts and makes them understandable to the layman. For example, the chapter on fats finally helped me understand all the jargon out there about saturated and unsaturated fats, hydrogenated oils, etc. This information has made me a better consumer and mother...now I know what to look for on labels.

It is also very readable because it incorporates many lists and side bars that highlight key concepts and insights. These items make it easy to skim through and glean a bit of information about many things without feeling overwhelmed by a bunch of dry and boring facts.

I also liked the way that Sears explains how certain foods impact our body. He uses many analogies to help the reader understand what occurs during the digestion process and why particular foods lead to optimum health.

Although I could never incorporate all of their suggestions, the book does a great job of giving me some goals to shoot for. It has helped me understand why some foods are bad and others better. The book has inspired me to look at eating in an entirely different way and to make efforts to improve my family's health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand
This book is great, even if you didn't have kids and just wanted to learn about how to eat right! The stuff nobody ever tells you and food manufacturers don't want you to know! It's a very helpful, complete book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Family Nutrition Bible
By page 7, I was diving into my cupboards and discarding all the foods with hydrogenated oil. I devoured this book, and found this to be the easiest book on nutrition that I have ever read. Cut into bite-size sections, this book was a delight to read. I was able to make consise, informed decisions without feeling pressured into one lifestyle over another. I purschased this book for my Mother-In-Law, who is as far apart from me on the eating spectrum as possible, but who will still be able to glean wonderful and relevant information from this book.
My favorite section was the top twelve food list, honorable mention food list, and top-ten foods for each vitmin, mineral, and food classification. By implementing these foods into my family's lifestyle, I have increased the diversity of our meals, while feeling confident that my family of six is getting all the nutritional requirements that they need. I used the food circle as a guide to create a weekly nutrition plan for my family, and using that, I prepare weekly meal plans using the tops foods for each category. This also helps when it is time to do the shopping, as I only need to get the items on the mealplan, minus what I already have in the pantry. It sure helps for me in the kitchen! As a Mom who doesn't relish her time spent in the kitchen, this book helps me to maximize the nutritional efficiency of the time that I do spend in there!
This book helped me to take the final step into vegetarianism, and introduced me to the world of whole foods. Thanks, Dr. and Martha Sears!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get your nutrition info straightened up
The Searses have really outdone themselves this time. Knowlege is power, YOUR power to be healthy and raise healthy kids with sound eating habits. A definite MUST for all who are concerned and confused about what and how we eat and feed to our kids. The "Family Nutrition Book" opens all these little drawers in your brain full of jumbled-up bits and peices of incomplete information of dubious quality - and makes order. The book is superbly organised and easy to read, which doesn't make it any less scientific. No more mumbling a vague "it's good for you" when your kid asks why he should "eat this stuff", for now you actually KNOW why. Enjoy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to pediatric radiology
This is a well-written text that is easily readable during your first pediatric radiology rotation (slightly bigger than Helm's pink book). It's clearly targeted at radiology residents, since the author includes short explanations and tips on performing common fluoro procedures and anticipates questions most residents have when first starting peds. Given its size and cost, some compromises with the book were made (I would like to see more pictures and diagrams), but the ones in the book are generally of excellent quality. Pertinent films are discreetly labelled to illustrate major findings, a major benefit to newer residents. The topics are discussed clearly and succintly, with the most relevant facts of each topic included. Given it's size it's not overly comprehensive, but this is probably a plus for most residents frustrated by larger texts that drone on about one topic or focus on obscure topics that are unlikely to be helpful early in their training. This book is much better than two larger and more expensive texts I have looked at, the Peds Requisites and the Essentials of Peds Radiology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful reference work, even for non-peds and non-cards
In concise and clear language, Prof. Park explains how a
medical practitioner can diagnose alsmost any known
    cardiac anomaly in a child.

Having a scientific but no medical background myself,
I found it very readable. Some knowledge of cardiac
anatomy and electrocardiography are a prerequisite.

What is especially good is Prof. Parks comprehensive
approach to the diagnosis: all posible pathologies are
listed and when a particular observation
is possible in normal patients, he doesn't forget to point
    this out too.

I have only read the 2nd edition of the book (1988), so
I cannot vouch whether the latest (4th) is up to date
on recent advances in the field, be it in pacemaking
    capabilities or teratogenic discoveries.

As a resident in pediatrics, you face the usual time constraints, yet you want to prepare yourselfs for electives by reading a comprehensible text. For Cardiology, I have found with Park's "Pediatric Cardiology for the Practioner" an outstanding text, which I actually prefer over more recent review articles for its easy to understand approach. This book provides more than an introductory text for the pediatric resident with a general focus, it also provides a valuable and readily accessible resource for cardiology fellows. ... Read more

    Finally, a beginning...

The time had finally come. The time I had been waiting for through all these long months that I knew sooner or later had to occur. Now it was here.

She had surprised me so much by actually crying that for a moment I did nothing but look at her. Then I gathered her into my arms, hugging her tightly. She clutched onto my shirt so that I could feel the dull pain of her fingers digging into my skin. She cried and cried and cried. I held her and rocked the chair back and on its rear legs, feeling my arms and chest get damp from the tears and her hot breath and the smallness of the room.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotionally riveting!
This is the 2nd book I've read from author Torey Hayden and it is the most emotionally riveting book I have read in a very long time. In this book we read about 6-year old Sheila temporarily sent to Hayden's special ed. class. Sheila comes in as an angry revengeful little girl and in a period of 5 months, blossoms into a flower full of joy and happiness. Hayden's book shows much of the ups and downs with her relationship with young Sheila. Nevertheless, it still shows positive progression. It lends credence that when dealing with emotionally disturbed children, the issues aren't always black and white, for I was clearly appalled with Hayden's accounts of Sheila's actions. However, as I continued to read, I discovered the reasons why Sheila acted as she did and this was due to her background situation with her mother and father.

One thing that I did not like is that I felt Hayden's departure to pursue academics was in a sense, abandonment on Sheila's part. While I can understand the reason for it, I felt that it left Sheila too vulnerable into eventually thinking Hayden left her as well. With the Tiger's Child as the sequel to Sheila's story, I'm sure my reasoning will probably be addressed.

And I agree with Hayden in the beginning: Sheila is a survivor.

5-0 out of 5 stars GRABS YOU BY THE HEART & WON'T LET GO!
ONE CHILD is my favorite book in the whole world. I first read it when it came out in the summer of 1981 I believe it was. Since then I have read it no less than 5 times. ONE CHILD has altered my life because today I am a foster mother and the way in which Torey dealt with 6 year old Shelia has influenced the way that I treat the lives which are entrusted to me.What can be said about that remarkable teacher that hasn't already been said? The formula that God poured into that woman's heart when he was creating her was the stuff that changes lives, that make people better, that rescues drowning souls! The steps that she took to help that child were small and seemingly ordinary but the power and results of those choices were the type that moved the mountains within the souls of those she helped. Torey Hayden is the kind of human being that God sends, if you're lucky, to people who never knew that a thing called LOVE ever existed. Buy this book and I dare you to not be moved and changed in at least some small way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy your read, but don¿t take it as gospel
Torey Hayden's books impress on readers the success of her vast body of work with disturbed and troubled children. However, as you read, do not assume that you are reading facts and biography. You are reading parts of the truth, spiced with generous helpings of poetic license. These accounts are greatly fictionalized, and perhaps conflate a variety of cases.

According to Hayden's official website, one can figure out a timeline of her career. Her "biographical" writings are based on work done in the states, and, again according to her official website, she came to England in 1980. Yet, judging by her date of birth, it is highly unlikely that Hayden graduated from college before 1972, and that was with a science degree. Her graduate work was in special education, which means she was unlikely to have graduated with a Master's degree before 1974. In the US, a PhD is a long hard slog. Hayden did not finish hers, but one can easily deduce that she spent a great deal of time in college, and probably fitted in her work with disturbed children as part of her college field experience requirements.

So from this we know that her entire collection of "biographical" works was, at the most, based on experiences between 1972 and 1980. But even then the timeline is way off, especially when one considers Ghost Girl, and Hayden's claim of meeting her again when she was a college student.

Reading her accounts, one imagines a life's career. No. The fiction is the life work. Keep writing, Ms. Hayden, you do it well. But be honest: don't present your teaching experiences with these children as autobiographical and biographical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes me ponder retirement
I will be retiring from the military in 5 years. I have thought about what I want to do for work when that day comes....as I'll only be 39 and still young. What Torey has envoked in me by her book was that feeling I once had. That I might want to teach. To be that one teacher you always remember.....for me, it was Mr. Mathias in 4th grade at Wishon Elementary in Fresno, CA. This is my first review of a book on Amazon, I was so moved. I only closed the cover 2 minutes ago. I was touched by the human spirit, and the power of love. How Shelia broke free from her shell, she was "tamed", to put it in her own words. I looked at the date the book was originally written....1980. Shelia would now be about 30. I wonder where she is, how she's doing? I was so moved that I know I will be thinking about her in the next few weeks. I love the part about the mysterious colored "candies" her classmate vomited up at home. I won't tell you to outcome so as to not ruin it. I laughed out loud, though, truly. I originally bought this book to sell on Amazon, but I wanted to read it first. Now, I'm keeping it. I'm glad I have another book by Torey as well.

One Child is a clear and precise look at a child of abuse-sexual and child. The reeling life of pain and disappointment. The long journey to come to the other side. This is a must read, highly rated book.

5-0 out of 5 stars the most usefull guide to inherited metabolic disease
I'm now into the vast subject of inherited metabolic diseases for about one and a half year. This book is the perfect guide in dayly clinical work. It gives a short introduction at the first page of every chapter, showing the metabolic pathway and giving a short summery of the different types of metabolic defects in this part of metabolism. It's not only brief but also based on the recent publications. The very systematic structure and the much better index of this new edition is another reason why there is no day without Fernandez et al. in my clinical work. ... Read more

    Book Description

Every parent eagerly awaits the day his or her child will speak for the first time. For millions of mothers and fathers, however, anticipation turns to anxiety when those initial, all-important words are a long time coming. Many worried parents are reassured that their child is “just a late talker,” but unfortunately, all too often that is not the case. Nineteen million children in the United States have a serious speech disorder. For these children, early and intensive therapy is crucial if they are to stand a chance of ever speaking normally. This book was written to help the worried parent cut through the confusion and stress to determine if their child needs help.

The Late Talker is the first book of its kind, providing effective, practical answers to the questions every concerned parent asks. Written by Marilyn C. Agin, a highly respected developmental pediatrician, and Lisa F. Geng, a mother of two late talkers, it is a tremendously useful handbook that includes:

    - Ways to identify the warning signs of a speech disorder
    - Information on how to get the right kind of evaluations and therapy
    - Ways to obtain appropriate services through the school system and health insurance
    - Fun at-home activities that parents can do with their child to stimulate speech
    - Groundbreaking evidence of the promising and dramatic benefits of nutritional supplementation
    - Advice from experienced parents who’ve been there on what to expect and what you can do to be your child’s best advocate

5-0 out of 5 stars The Late Talker book A Guiding Light
The Late Talker book is like a guiding light through a turbulent storm. Finally a book geared toward both parents and professionals written in a clear "how to" way to help any child that needs help talking. The Late Talker is the first book that breaks down the needed medical, educational and speech information into language that anyone can understand--and intertwines it all with stories any parent can relate to.

As a mother of two late talking children, diagnosed in later years with a speech disorder, I now know how critical it is to seek appropriate services as early as possible, and the importance of knowing the difference between a speech delay and a speech disorder. How I searched for information when my boys were growing up speech and language impaired! Not just on therapy--but on where to go, which professionals to see and what to expect, what to look for in the school, how to deal with the teasing and the fears -only to find nothing out there in books to help me to help my children. What I would have given to have had this valuable information when both my sons were younger.
I hope it makes the world brighter for children like mine -and "brings them a voice." For this reason, The Late Talker book brings tears to my eyes.

Hats off to co-authors, Dr. Marilyn Agin, Malcolm Nicholl, and Lisa Geng for creating this book and for teaching how to be the voice for your child, until your child's voice is unlocked.

5-0 out of 5 stars A call-to-action for parents & caregivers of any late talker
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is even slightly concerned that a child may have a speech delay. I only wish I had read a book like this when my preschooler was 15 months old (the time at which I first started having those nagging feelings that something just wasn't quiet right with his speech development). Instead he was 27 months old when he was finally diagnosed with a speech delay because well-meaning people advised us to adopt a "wait and see" approach. By doing so, he lost one year of very valuable speech therapy. This book contains a wealth of information: signs of possible disorders vs. a mere speech delay; the importance of obtaining the right kinds of therapy and evaluations; dealing with insurance companies, early-intervention programs and school systems; how to be your child's best advocate; the amazing benefits of essential fatty acid supplementation; things parents can do at home with their child to stimulate speech development; internet sites, support groups, and so much more! In short, this book contains everything you'd ever need to know or want to ask to give your late talker the best head start possible!

5-0 out of 5 stars hope for my 2 year old
I bought the book, The Late Talker, and I am so happy with the results that we have gotten with my 2 year old. My son, was not saying a word, or communicating at all and was very independent. About a month ago I started a suggestion that they made in the book, and WOW have I seen results. He is no longer independent (meaning, not wanting to communicate) He is repeating words now that I ask him to repeat and his focus and attention span is amazing. All my friends and family thought that he may be autistic and after only 3 weeks of giving him this product that they suggest in the book, I have seen miraculous changes. I thank God first and then I thank the authors of this book. I would highly recommend this book if anyone has a child with speech problems or is even in doubt. This product that I am giving him is sooooo healthy for the whole family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't recommend high enough
I was so tired of hearing my son was just a late talker. I wasn't worried, but I had questions and wanted to know what I could do to help my child. Why is he not talking yet? Does he need therapy? As a father I absolutely loved this book. It's cram packed with information on how to work with my son to help him. The chapters are broken down by topic ie: therapy, things to do at home to help, etc.

Simply put this is a must read for any parent of a child who has a speech problem. Best book and only book I've found so far that gives specifics on how and why your child may have a speech delay from an easy to understand parent/professional point of view.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 grandparents review
As grandparents we were upset at first when we realized that our two-year old grandson still had not begun talking. He had a speech impairment. Fortunately, our daughter was directed to a "special needs" nursery school, where a knowledgeable teacher introduced her to the concept of "early intervention" and the need for a prompt proper diagnosis by a developmental pediatrician, followed by therapy by a qualified speech pathologist. Our grandson, now eight years old, is enrolled in a "Special Ed" county schools, and is receiving the special therapy, which will enable him to look forward to clearer speech patterns and enunciation in the foreseeable future. All this, because our daughter became involved actively,in searching for a solution to her son's disorder. We recently read" The Late Talker" by Dr Marilyn Agin and Lisa Geng, which describes in great detail the frustration of parents of an apraxic child, who do not know where to turn for help. The book explains the importance of "Early Intervention" and the danger of a wait-and-see attitude. A professional diagnosis by a developmental pediatrician is essential for a guide for proper therapy. The need for a speech therapist is stressed, whether in school or privately. This book lead a parent of a child with a speech impairment from a maze of confusion into a reasonable plan for a child's future progress of better speech. At the end of "The Late Talker" there is a section on resources for a parent,a guideline for school-based speech-language-pathologists, explanations of medical abbreviations, a glossary and finally an extensive bibliography. This book encourages parents to get involved, go to IEP meetings, work with the boards of education to get the best training for their child. Fortunately,it is an easy read,as well. We recommend it highly. Sincerely, 2 lucky grandparents ... Read more
