3-0 out of 5 stars has its ups and downs
The book has absolutely everything you need to know word-for-word to get certified in NALS. It comes from more of a nursing perspective so little details like how to operate the jackson-reiss and anatomy of the airway will be extremely redunant for respiratory therapists.

I found the CD-ROM included was very buggy in my computer. While it was helpful to see everything happening at once, the videos' content should have been more closely watched, since during a chapter about mechanical ventilation saying bag at around a rate of 40, will clearly show the person at the head ventilating at a rate of closer to 70 or 80.

5-0 out of 5 stars best so far
I'm going to make it short. I just passed my neo resuscitation recertification because of this book. What makes this book so special is its illustrations (each illustration is worth 1000 words or so)and its flowing text.If you need this type of book, than I believe this one is the best so far on American market; there is one better in Europe and Australia, but they have slightly diferent guidelines which may be better than ours, but hey, maybe one they we get to the point where we have world guidelines. Believe me, I have researched alot to find the best book on this topic, and this book is it. I recommend it to all MDs, critical RNs, neonatal respiratory therapists(RRT-NPS)and other medical staff that is often in contact with little bambinos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Improved Version
Text flows well and I was able to ace the course. Great reference to keep in your locker at work for review, too

5-0 out of 5 stars Neonatal Resuscitation Made Easy
NRP has been streamlined to enhance the readers learning and retention of the resuscitation guidelines. This book is easy reading...cover to cover! Key learning points are emphasized throughout the book. Each chapter is carefully laid out with case studies to reinforce the content covered. The reader builds on the foundation of the previous chapter(s) thus progressing one from a basic to complex resuscitation scenario. Comprehension questions are found through various points of each chapter with a test at the end of each chapter. The book is excellent not to mention the CD-ROM as an added bonus. Even if you are due to renew your NRP under the old guidelines(through June 2001) this book will provide you with all the information you need to know. Thanks Marla!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Learning tool!
Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation provides very easy to follow information as well as hands-on excercises in the practice of Neonatal Resucitation. An excellent read for the emergency worker who would like to get more information on this very specialized field in the practice. Very easy to follow even for the non-native english speaker. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
This should be required reading for any physician caring for the breastfeeding mother or the breastfed baby. With all of the mythology surrounding breastfeeding and the wide range of advice given to nursing mothers, it is essential that practitioners give accurate, informed advice. Reading this book will allow health care professionals to do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and educational for the medical profession
As a gynecologist based in Spain, I found this book extremely helpful while counseling my patients about breastfeeding, and while breastfeeding myself. I think most obstetrical textbooks do not cover enough the aspect of breastfeeding, and numerous questions remain to be answered, some as simple as: both breasts or one breast?. These simple questions, however, are an important source of stress to new mothers. Apart from that, the more "medical" aspects of the book are also exceptional. A must for all medical professionals involved in pregnancy, birth and infant care.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession
I am a IBCLC and work in a NICU with very small premature &/or sick newborns. As a nurse I very frequently use Dr Lawrence's book when there is a conflict with a doctor over the care of our breastfeeding babies. Dr Lawrence's book is compleatly research based and written with authority --- no touchy/feely all professional. It is a great book to use to study for the lactation exam !!! Get the newest copy date you can find -- doctors respect new information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Medical Professionals and Mothers
This is an amazing text that answers almost every question the reader or a patient can bring to the table. Easy to read with good references. This is a must have for anyone who treats lactating women. As a mother I found the book to be very helpful, as a medical professional this book has been an excellent reference when treating lactating women. Definitely 5 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession
I am a Registered Dietitian and have promoted breastfeeding to women for years. It wasn't until I became a breastfeeding mother that I wanted to be more informed on the subject. This book provides the how and why on specific benefits of lactation. If you do not have a medical background, be aware that there is a great deal of medical language. I am very pleased with my purchase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-Organized
I just love medical texts that take the "Signs and Symptoms Approach." That's how real medicine works. This book is no exception--while not a comprehensive reference by any means, it is very helpful in diagnosing childhood neurological conditions. That's why I recommend it for office use. For something more comprehensive, check MD Consult online or visit your nearest medical library. For something truly useful for your office, buy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for review ; handy for quick clinical reference
The format (signs & symptoms approach) of this text should be helpful for those who need to know where to start with a case. Text is brief and to the point. The long ddx lists would be great, except that they are in alphabetical order, rather than listing by frequency of occurrence or some similar relevant quality. It is the only decent, recently published pediatric neurology text of its size that I'm aware of, so is a good choice for those needing a quick review. With improved proofreading/editing, I would rate it more highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for residents
This is a very good book. The signs and symptoms approach makes this book quite easy to read. No, it is not a comprehensive text of child neurology. But, yes, it is an extremely valuable resource for residents rotating through child neuro.

5-0 out of 5 stars The next best thing to Juan Pascual
Sometimes you can't have a portly, balding pediatric neurologist right at the bedside to help you out. For those times, you need this book.

Fenichel's book is the standard for adult neurologists and pediatricians who need a practical, concise, well-organized introduction to the otherwise mysterious world of pediatric neurology. It's organized by the presenting sign and symptom, which makes it redundant in places, but also invaluable when preparing for Board vignettes, not to mention highly relevant for taking care of real patients. There's no substitute or alternative.

Its only shortcoming is its lack of depth - and it doesn't purport to be a textbook. (That role is filled by Swaiman's 1998 2-volume edition, which is superior in my opinion to that of Aicardi.) This is a book you could carry around with you on your pediatric neurology rotation - and if you rotate, you'd better!

What else it's not: It's not for lay readers, such as parents or non-medical personnel. It assumes a great deal of familiarity with medicine, pediatrics, and neurology, and presumes that the reader has a good deal of clinical experience. For this reason I also wouldn't recommend it to medical students - it's written for residents. (I'd send the students to Swaiman.)

As much as we wish we could keep a pediatric neurologist in our pocket at all times, current technology doesn't permit it. And the one I'm thinking of would never fit. So, order your copy of Fenichel today! ... Read more

Disease processes often encountered by the pediatric primary provider are addressed through discussions of assessment, differential diagnosis, management, and prevention. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for shelf board exam
When I took the shelf board, my jaw dropped - it was as if the board came straight out of this book. Concise, but loaded with information. Lacks only info on immunizations and milestones, but these can be found anywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent review!
This book is a perfect review for the USMLE-2. It include 5oo clinical-cases question with pictures and X-rays. The questions are shorter than on real exam but they help you to concentrate on high-yeld topics and learn important details which are often missed in other review books.
The book is well-organized. The questions are arranged in chapters. For example, the newborn infant, respiratory system, cardiovascular system... This allows you to learn the topic first and than sharpen your knowlege using this book. Plus, you can practice with questions before you finish reading the whole Pediatrics!
Perfect review!

1-0 out of 5 stars MS Reader Version is cumbersome
The content of this book is good, but I recommend against the MS Reader version of this edition. MS reader is very basic--you can only flip forward/backward by page or chapter--basically ok for reading novels. But this version of Pediatrics PSAAR is straight text w/out links to answers, checkboxes for the practice questions, etc. It is frustrating and time consuming to write your answer for a question on paper, flip to the beginning of the next chapter of answers, and flip page-by-page to your specific answer in the answer chapter. You have to do this all over again backwards and then forwards if you want to remind yourself what the question asked or what your answer said. There is also no way to view more than one location in the book at one time. MS Reader is horrible for a Q&A Review format. Waste of money. If they were to come out with a version containing links to answers, weblike forward and back buttons, checkboxes for your answers, a scoring system, and even a palm version, I would go bonkers over it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I used this book to help review for Step 3. As a resident in IM, I really needed a Peds refresher. This book was excellent for the job. It was a tough review, but I think it's a necessary task for the Boards. Allow a few days to cover the book (including time to look up the answers in your Peds reference). ... Read more

In clear, step-by-step detail, this highly practical manual provides a research-based framework for strengthening executive functioning in children and adolescents. The book explains how executive skills develop in children and are used in everyday life--from the self-regulation required for responsible behavior to the planning and initiation abilities needed to complete homework on time. Guidelines are presented for conducting multimodal assessments and using the results to plan environmental modifications, individualized instruction, coaching, and whole-class interventions. Attention is also given to working with children with ADHD and other clinical problems in which executive skills are impaired. Many of the techniques described can be implemented by teachers and parents in collaboration with school-based clinicians. Designed in a large-size format with convenient, lay-flat binding, the manual includes over a dozen reproducible assessment tools, checklists, and planning sheets, ready to photocopy and use.

Great resource to get ready for the Peds section of the step 2 exam. I was impressed with the depth of discussion on each case that the author somehow managed to trim down to one page. Excellent photos as well. Well-written and definitely very high yield.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding series for step 2 review!
Loved this book and the whole series. Great way to review, because this is how the boards are - lots of long clinical vignettes where you have to know not only the diagnosis and treatment, but how to manage it over time. Concise, high yield and easy to understand. Great photos as well. Definitely check this series out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice review for boards
As a future peds resident, I wanted to do well on the peds boards questions and this book was a big help. The cases are written so you can guess the diagnosis before reading about it on the next page. Well-written with very good explanations and good photos (I finally know what the thumb sign of epiglottitis and an impetigo rash look like!)

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful techniques but not grounded in real life practice
I would be more than happy to give this book a five star review but for a few key, significant complaints about narrative therapy. The main one is that no therapeutic failures are ever presented in narrative texts (including this one). This leads me to wonder if the authors' political, or politically correct, agenda is not more important than the clinical aspect of the work.

An example is the situation here where the therapist feels she must confront a client's racist remarks. It is presented as an imperative - that the therapists' needs at that point in the session are of supreme importance, given the context of the therapists' socio-political righteousness. I agree that racism should be challenged, and I am sure I am in accord with the therpaists' views here. But this is not the point.

After Ms. Freeman confronts the client about the racism the therapeutic relationship evolves to an epiphany in which all are blissfully healed - this is standard narrative mythology. In most psychodynamic literature (and real clinical practice) even skilled therapists sometimes suffer an empathic failure that leads to an adolescent leaving therapy. Young people are extremely sensitive to being judged, and it takes a very strong relationship, grounded in the clients' needs, to contain this type of intervention. Better still, the therapist should embody her/his beliefs in their being rather than by pontificating. A righteous stand like that presented here would stand at least a 50-50 chance of rupturing a therapeutic alliance. You won't find a book called "Failures in Narrative Therapy". This is not because failure is a 'construction' or some other bit of sophistry, or because therapeutic ruptures do not occur. It is because narrative therapy has yet to attain a level of maturity where it can admit that it, too, is an errant art that demands transparency and empathy, not preaching to the client out of the therapists' needs, no matter how noble.

All that said, many of the storytelling methods presented here are useful for working with children and their families. But please hold the self-congratulation, narrative enthusiasts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and well writen
Provides original solutions to tough and common problems. I found that I was able to apply the concepts and suggestions, both personally, and in my practice, effortlessly. I bought it for every therapist I knew.

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy to read book about new ideas for child therapy.
Playfull Approaches is an engaging book that makes the complex simple. A therapist parent or teacher will be spurred to creativity about even the most recalcitrant child. The authors work with children is presented in a literary form that puts the reader right inside their thinking and the world of childrens ideas. There is an excellent chapter on the use of expressive arts so its not just about talk therapy. The book shows how to put children in charge of their own healing and in touch with eachother. There are a number of extended case "stories" that are fascinating and educational. ... Read more

The award-winning Seizures and Epilepsy in Childhood is the standard resource for parents in need of comprehensive medical information about their child with epilepsy. Now in its third edition, this highly praised book has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the latest approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy in childhood, including the use of the ketogenic diet as a treatment for children who either do not respond to traditional drug therapy or who suffer intolerable side effects from medications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable
This book provided straightforward, invaluable information to our family when faced with our child's seizure disorder. It explains all the medical terms that our neurologist seemed to throw around without explanation (thereby scaring us!). It is optimistic and practical. It spans everything from how to deal with seizures, the pros and cons of different treatment, and how your child can live a full life. Most of all it put us at ease and educated us as to how to proceed with our child's medical treatment. It also helped guide us with what to tell others - the school, babysitters, grandparents. Definitely a must read for parents dealing with a child with seizures! ... Read more
