5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and Factual
As a practicing pediatrician, I use this book to review a few items that I have long since forgotten. I also recommend it to the medical students and pediatric residents that rotate through my office. I love the fact that the material is written in an easy to understand format. It virtually jumps off the page at you. I also think its organization into to etiology, epidemiology, differential diagnosis etc. makes it idea for the medical student. Its format reflects how you will be "pimped" on rounds and the key stats and concepts that you will see on the USMLE. A great read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great medical resource
This is a fantastic reference for residents and medical students. I especially found it useful in preparing for attending rounds, but it's also great for exam review. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Book Description

In American society, the consumption of alcohol during pregnancy is considered dangerous, irresponsible, and in some cases illegal. Pregnant women who have even a single drink routinely face openly voiced reproach. Yet fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) in infants and children is notoriously difficult to diagnose, and the relationship between alcohol and adverse birth outcomes is riddled with puzzles and paradoxes.

Sociologist Elizabeth M. Armstrong uses fetal alcohol syndrome and the problem of drinking during pregnancy to examine the assumed relationship between somatic and social disorder, the ways in which social problems are individualized, and the intertwining of health and morality that characterizes American society. She traces the evolution of medical knowledge about the effects of alcohol on fetal development, from nineteenth-century debates about drinking and heredity to the modern diagnosis of FAS and its kindred syndromes. She argues that issues of race, class, and gender have influenced medical findings about alcohol and reproduction and that these findings have always reflected broader social and moral preoccupations and, in particular, concerns about women's roles and place in society, as well as the fitness of future generations. Medical beliefs about drinking during pregnancy have often ignored the poverty, chaos, and insufficiency of some women's lives—factors that may be more responsible than alcohol for adverse outcomes in babies and children.

Using primary sources and interviews to explore relationships between doctors and patients and women and their unborn children, Armstrong offers a provocative and detailed analysis ofhow drinking during pregnancy came to be considered a pervasive social problem, despite the uncertainties surrounding the epidemiology and etiology of fetal alcohol syndrome. ... Book Description

Three of every four children and adolescents with cancer can now be cured. However, physicians are using increasingly intensive treatment regimens. These treatments can expose patients to toxic chemotherapeutic agents, invasive surgical procedures, and radiation oncology interventions that risk disfigurement, neuropsychiatric damage, and life-threatening organ toxicity. These potentially dire consequences have mandated that advances in cancer treatment go hand in hand with supportive care measures that sustain patients through their therapeutic ordeal and allow each patient to achieve maximum quality of life. In this book, now in its third edition, the discipline of supportive care in pediatric oncology is covered in depth.

Supportive Care of Children with Cancer is a ready-reference handbook designed for use at the hospital bedside, in the oncology outpatient clinic, or in the physician's office. To create this book, leading experts in the field recommended approaches to supportive care which were then critically reviewed by members of the Children's Oncology Group, the world's largest cooperative study group for children's cancer. For students, house officers, fellows, pediatric oncologists, surgeons, nurses, nutritionists, social workers, and psychologists, this book provides essential information about the care of pediatric oncology patients.

The third edition features a new chapter on recognition, prevention, and remediation of burnout in pediatric oncology staffmembers, while throughout the book, chapters have been revised and updated to reflect the impact of new antibiotic agents, new antiemetics, and new approaches to pain management. ... This is really a bible for a Pediatric Neurologist as me. Almost all aspects in the field of pediatric neurology are broaldy and deeply discussed, especially adding many important new chapters in this new edition, such as Tourette syndrome and ketogenic diet. All the material is well updated. There are many small errors which perhaps may be misinterpretated by beginners. However, it won't shake its role as a bible. Of course, non-neurologist pediatricians, non-pediatrician neurologists, neurosurgeons, rehabilitation specialists, and all neuroscientists concerning children or developing nervous system will feel satisfactory on referring this great book. ... Book Description

Quickly acquire the knowledge and skills you need to confidently administer, score, and interpret the NEPSY

The NEPSY is widely used by school psychologists, neuropsychologists, and research psychologists to assess children ages 3-12 with developmental disabilities and to develop effective intervention strategies. It provides comprehensive assessment over five functional domains: Attention/Executive Functions, Language, Sensorimotor Functions, Visuospatial Processing, and Memory and Learning. To use the test properly, professionals need an authoritative source of advice and guidance on how to administer, score, and interpret this test. Authored by the creators of the NEPSY, Essentials of NEPSY Assessment is that source.

Like all the volumes in the Essentials of Psychological Assessment series, this book is designed to help students and mental health professionals quickly acquire the knowledge and skills they need to make optimal use of a major psychological assessment instrument. Each concise chapter features numerous callout boxes highlighting key concepts, bulleted points, and extensive illustrative material, as well as test questions that help you gauge and reinforce your grasp of the information covered. The book also serves as a resource for advice on specific questions you may have during an assessment.

Essentials of NEPSY Assessment includes vital information about the NEPSY, including the advantage of being able to assess a child across functions and modalities. The authors provide step-by-step guidance on test administration, scoring, and interpretation, along with their expert assessment of the test’s relative strengths and weaknesses, valuable advice on its clinical applications, and several illuminating case reports. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The essentials of pediatric surgery.
This is then 2nd edition of a book that covers the essentials of pediatric surgery in a clear, concise fashion. While at 800+ pages, it is not a small book, it is shorter than the couple of other mainstream pediatric surgery textbooks that are each two volumes pushing 2000 pages. This book encompasses what U.S. and Canadian Pediatric Surgery Residency Program Training Directors expect their residents to know at the end of their training.

Who might benefit from this book? Firstly, as a board-certified pediatric surgeon, I would recommend it as a study guide for surgeons who have completed an accredited pediatric surgery residency program when studying for their American Board of Surgery exams in Pediatric Surgery. General surgery residents and medical students will also find it to be a manageable background source during their busy rotations on a pediatric surgery service. Other medical physicians, such as pediatricians and neonatologists, who care for young patients would also find it to be a handy reference to understand the surgical problems of their patients. Finally, I also use it as a source of material to help explain things to the parents of my young surgical patients.

If you are looking for the definitive bible on the subject, the one to get is the two-volume textbook, Pediatric Surgery, also published by Mosby. ... Read more

This curriculum guide is excellent especially for first year special educators who are required to write family-friendly IFSP/IEP goals. 4-0 out of 5 stars Reading: Broad or narrow?
This book assumes that the reading of medical texts is not just something that is self-evident, but something that can be learned by reading the book. "The traditional course in reading the medical literature consists of "Here's the New England Journal of Medicine. Read it!". Unlike this "sink or swim" method, this book provides a step-by step, active-participation approach to a clinical review of the medical literature.

In a way, this book is a traditional book on research methods turned upside down. Instead of telling the researcher how to do and report a study, this book tells the reader how to apply such knowledge in determining the quality of a medical paper. As such it is well written, clear and relevant.

I would like to suggest, however, that research methods are always depending on a views in the philosophy of science. (Courses in the Philosophy of Medicine are becoming more and more important in the education of Doctors). As an example of a well received book I can mention "Philosophy of Medicine. An Introduction" by Henrik R. Wulff, Stig Andur Pedersen & Raben Rosenberg (Oxford, UK: Blackwell Scientific Publications, 1986). Knowledge of this kind should enable the reader to read and interpret the medical literature at a still higher level. (It is of course more difficult to write easy "how to read books" based on such a more theoretical and philosophical level compared to the more statistical and methodical level).

There exists a broader literature on "Clinical reasoning in the health Professions" (Higgs et al), "Medical semiotics" (Baer et al.), diverse philosophical studies of medicine, "Quality in science" and much more. It would be interesting if anyone would try to expose how such knowledge could be turned upside down as guide on how to read the medical literature on a still deeper level.

It is my claim that a general background in philosophy and science studies should provide readers with even better qualifications to read the scientific literature. This is not an extraordinary position. In Denmark courses in the philosophy of science are very popular, and just now are we discussing to make such courses compulsory in all university studies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Fit for a Niche Market
In "Cooking Up Fun for Kids with Diabetes" the authors dedicate the first two chapters to providing a basic understanding of diabetes. The first chapter discusses diabetes with a slant toward helping a child understand it. The second one is from the perspective of what the adult parent needs to know.

The book contains simple recipes rated on a one, two, or three hand system with one being the easiest and three being the hardest. Each recipe provides information on serving size, exchanges, calories, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, fiber, protein, and carbohydrates. Some are just easy recipes that a child can do; others have been adapted to make it more fun for children. For example, an ordinary grilled cheese sandwich becomes a toasted cheese person.

"Cooking Up Fun for Kids with Diabetes" is a fun book of recipes and food related crafts for any child and a recommended read.

Book Description

Dr. Laura Nathanson wrote The Portable Pediatrician to help parents find the joy in parenting and gain the confidence to quickly and easily assess their child's development, medical symptoms, and behavioral problems. Parents can't always visit their pediatrician every time they have a question, but fortunately with this book they have the next best thing.

The Portable Pediatrician, one of the few child-care books written by a practicing pediatrician, offers authoritative and practical advice on:

  • Keeping up with, or even one step ahead of, your child's rapidly changing needs
  • Setting limits before the one year birthday
  • Planning the arrival of the next baby in the family
  • Coping with your own as well as with your child's separation anxiety
  • Dealing with the four I's: illnesses, injuries, immunizations, and insurance coverage
  • Getting prompt medical attention for serious crises -- and what to do in the meantime
  • Preventing childhood obesity and eating disorders later
  • Confronting complex behavior and medical problems, including ADD, autism, asthma, oppositional behavior (including potty resistance)

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best
I have a few problems with this book. First of all, the lay-out can be difficult to follow. Sometimes it just seems jumbled. And, more importantly, I think the author is too obsessed with weight. Considering our country's growing population of obese children, there is some reason for concern, but her advice against snacks for toddlers is taking things a bit too far (and is in contradiction to the American Academy of Pediatrics' advice). The book is filled with advice about how to tell if your baby is too chubby, and how to keep them trim. This might be useful IF your pediatrician has told you that your child is too heavy, but could cause useless anxiety otherwise. Also, like any baby book author, Dr. Nathanson's biases show through, and may be in conflict with yours. For example, in the chapter on Nine months to One year, she advocates, "Consider a baby-harness or leash: this is the age for Cherub (she always refers to baby as Cherub) to get used to it." If this makes you cringe, you might want to pass on this particular book. In the nine months since our son was born, we've refered to this book a few times, but have found The American Academy of Pediatrics Caring for your Baby and Young Child Birth to Age 5 much more useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars lots of expertise, little advocacy
This book fit in nicely with the books that fit our parenting philosophy, which is off the AP bandwagon but in touch with current academic research on attachment and limits. And that's what's best about Nathanson's writing: it's soundly informed and appropriate for our culture.

Our newborn had transient tachypnea, and this was the only book we found that discusses it. Her position that you shouldn't let a newborn cry alone (but that it's possible to spoil a six-month-old) fits nicely between my mother's Spock-influenced rigidity and some of our friends' overindulgent parenting. We took her advice and introduced a "reminder bottle" at 2 weeks and now our baby goes easily from breast to bottle, finger to pacifier with ease (and no crying at any stage).

Unlike Dr Sears, Nathanson presents medical concepts for their own sake. She presents the variations of thought about fussiness and colic one by one, without using them to justify AP or scheduling--thus we could use them to understand the situation rather than spiral into self-doubt and sleeplessness. Her advice on breastfeeding actually has answers instead of rephrased attempts to convince us to do it.

I'm not sure this is a good choice for readers who see parenting as a cultural revolution, because Nathanson's advice is firmly centered in mainstream culture. But more importantly, it's broad and consistently helpful in its presentation of current pediatric knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reassuring Resource
This is one of the most well-worn books in my house. It's reassured me through countless colds and scrapes on the part of my two kids. The developmental sections are helpful, and the parenting parts are no more than suggestions of various alternatives you might not have thought of. If you're very dogmatic about child-raising this book will annoy you, as the author will invariably discuss some child-rearing technique you don't like and think no one should ever use, but I personally had no problem ignoring the parts I wasn't interested in and benefiting from the rest, and I'm glad she wrote a comprehensive enough book to let me do that rather than making arbitrary decisions like "I hate pacifiers so I'm not going to say anything about them." My only complaint was the illustrations are extremely ugly. Maybe a child drew them, but they certainly don't add anything.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment....
As an anxiety ridden, first time mom, I am addicted to reference matierials such as this book. I own several books of this sort and refer to them often. However, I was very disappointed in the advice this book had to offer and disagree with many of the authors opinions. For example, she states that children in the 12-18 month age set should not be given any snacks during the day and children of any age should not be given peanut butter for the mere fact that it is fattening. I don't agree wtih her advice to hold a toddler immobile, facing the wall during a tantrum and to give that child the cold shoulder after the tantrum is over. It seems to me that this would only promote passive aggressive behavior right from the start. THis book seems to be written on the assumption that all children are the same and every situation should be handled the exact same way. Does this doctor have children?

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource!
I received this book as a gift prior to the birth of our first child. I enjoyed reading before our son was born but I truly LOVED having it after we brought him home from the hospital. I had so many questions and concerns those first few days and this book answered them all! Now he is a little over a month old and I still reference this book at least once a day (I'll admit, I'm a paranoid mother). But it's still a great resource, especially for new parents like myself. I just bought two other copies for friend's babyshowers. This was one of the best gifts I received. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Everything You Need to Know to Protect Your Child's Vision
Every year, thousands of children are given eyeglasses they don't need while many others suffer from poor vision or eye discomfort without receiving proper treatment. If your child has a vision problem that requires corrective lenses, it's critical that he or she receives glasses in a timely manner. On the other hand, many eyeglass prescriptions for children are not necessary and, in fact, may harm normal visual development. How can you, the parent, know what to do?
In this practical, comprehensive guide, noted pediatric ophthalmologist Dr. Robert A. Clark covers not only glasses but also the whole range of common eyecare problems in children—from infancy through the teenage years. You'll discover:
·The most common vision and eye problems
·The role of vision in learning disorders
·Step-by-step recommendations and treatment options
·A set of detailed instructions for performing a home eye exam
·And much, much more!
Foreword by Arthur L. Rosenbaum, M.D., vice-chair, Jules Stein Eye Institute, University of California, Los Angeles

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly helpful and well written
I highly recommend this book to all parents. Not every doctor is up on the latest methods and treatments on treating eye problems so you as the parent should be. Get this book and find the best pediatric ophthalmologist (not an optometrist) in your area and your child will be in the best hands, an educated parent and a trained MD.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does Your Child Really Need Glasses?
This book is fine if you are intersted in very basic imformation about eye care. If you child is experiencing problems do not let this be your only resource. My six year old was just diagnosed with amblyopia (lazy eye)and I have done a lot of research. This books gives some very bad and possibly dangerous advice about treating amblyopia with an eye patch. Please double check any of the advice this book provides before you start treating your child's eye problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for all parents!
This book is destined to be a "must have" for all parents. Easy to read & understand, Dr. Clark takes the mystery out of some of the common, and not so common, eye problems that your kids may have. I liked it so much that after I read it, I bought 2 more, as gifts for my sister & my sister-in-law!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every parent needs this book!
This is going to be the "What to Expect" book for eyecare for children. I just got it and it is so easy to read and understand. It truly is a handbook. Keep it handy. It'll probably tell you more (and more clearly) than your pediatrician! Maybe I'll get one for my pediatrician.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars got the job done
I used this book as a primary resource for my 3rd year shelf exam (with Blueprints as a fall-back), and I got a 4.0. I saw a number of questions and scenarios on the test that I recogized from this text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Much harder than the actual test
I just finished the shelf exam having studied this book exhaustively, and I honestly think there's simply too much detail. Endless questions on the details of Riley-Day syndrome, McCune-Albright syndrome, and parasites found only in Africa. The test was certainly not easy, but the bulk of it dealt with the more common diseases like Henoch-Schonlein Purpura and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. I'd go with blueprints first and foremost, maybe supplement with a question book like this one and don't get too caught up in the details of obscure diseases.

In addition, some of the questions are just plain wrong now, such as questions on vaccination recommendations that are out-of-date.

Overall, I'd still recommend this book, so long as you don't get too depressed over not knowing the hardest questions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good and Consise
I found the book to be a detailed, yet concise review for the boards. The material covered is excellent, but the questions do not reflect the USMLE format. ... Read more
