This is a very good teaching tool for RN's new to a NICU, and also a reference for experienced NICU RN's. The 2002 version includes some added information.

Can put you to sleep.
I found a lot of valuble information, but this was after I weeded through some A&P 101 review and other things I think were of a very basic knowledge.Could get a little dry.
Good for the graduate or student nurse.

Very pratical, especially short summaries in boxes.
I am currently doing the neonatal intensive care course, and I use this book. I find it easily readable. Since english is not my native language, and I haven't studied for a few years this book has motivated me. The text is well written, and the scientific context is well researched. A must-have for nights on-call in the NICU!
This book, particularly the new 5th edition (released in August, 2003) is a must-have for on-call nights in the NICU. Although not as complete in terms of information as a full textbook, this book contains a blurb on nearly every topic one might encounter in the NICU. It is also surprisingly up to date for a textbook, containing the latest standards of care on controversial topics such as PPHN, use of ECMO and BPD, plus lots of other conditions.

This is no longer a spiral-bound book, which has positives and negatives. On the positive side, it's probably more durable long-term - no more ripping of pages and holes out of the spiral. On the negative side, it's harder to keep your page open without bending the spine out of shape.

This is by far the best on-call reference manual for neonatology. It's highly recommended by everyone I speak with, from staff to fellows to residents. I would recommend it as well!

Always helpfull
All informations which are needed to work at an neonatal intensive care unit are in this book.
The chapters are clearly organized and the text is structured strictly to ensure that information can be quickly found.
Hopefully there will be anew edition soon.

Nicely done concise reference for the on-call physician.
This is a nicely written, well organized quick reference text for the practicing physician, or resident in training. I was impressed by the amount of clearly presented practical information. Definitely a good book to check for a quick suggestion for response to a clinical situation. I wish there had been a book like this one when I was a resident.

Better than a board review course
Thank you for putting together this fabulous resource. This book is a great outline of all the major areas required for the Neonatology boards. I really don't think I could have passed without it. This book really helped me focus on the important aspects of Neonatology required to pass the boards. A great resource for fellows to have before they even begin contemplating the board exam.

Must buy!!!!
This is a great book for all neonatologists esp. if you are reviewing for the Boards which I just took recently. It has all the information that not a single reference book contains all at one time. my single most valuable reference book
I do locum tenens (temporary) doctoring and when I go on an assignment this is the first book to go in my suitcase. I take it to the office with me in the morning and take it home at night in case I get a question that I need it for. It is clear, concise, comprehensive and as authoritative as any text can be. the most usefull guide to inherited metabolic disease
I'm now into the vast subject of inherited metabolic diseases for about one and a half year. This book is the perfect guide in dayly clinical work. It gives a short introduction at the first page of every chapter, showing the metabolic pathway and giving a short summery of the different types of metabolic defects in this part of metabolism. It's not only brief but also based on the recent publications. Excellent FAS resource
Dr. Streissguth is one of the pioneers in the identification and treatment of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and the entire spectrum of congenital damage arising from in-utero exposure to alcohol. 25 years after the identification of this common and devastating disability, most efforts in the academic community still focus on definition and diagnosis, with relatively little attention paid to treatment. Dr. Streissguth stands atop the heap in extending her basic science research into the actual lives of affected individuals, their families, and the communities in which they live. Best and most thorough guide to fetal alcohol syndrome
After reading Dr. Streissguth's book on fetal alcohol syndrome, I feel this book should be given to every parent or caretaker who receives this diagnosis about their child. This is the most thorough book I have found on this subject. Dr. Streissguth's knowledge in this area is so extensive and her book offers a step by step approach and guidelines on what you will need to know to in raising a child with FAS. I truly recommend her book and am so grateful for her insights.

I am an obstetrician and gynaecologist. Have worked in several countries around the world. Have been involved with prenatal diagnosis and treatment for more than 10 years.

For more than premies
Our full-term (37wk) son was in the NICU due to a birth defect. This method was explained to us as we started to be able to hold him and I was trying to teach him to nurse. All I can say is IT WORKS. He was able to go home at 6 wks when we were told he would probably be in for than 3 mos. min. When you think about it it makes sense...this baby was inside you and close to you for however many months you carried him/her. Don't you think dropping the child in a "box" with no human contact would be a shock to the system? I think that "normal" babies could probably benefit from this too. Lord willing, I'll get a chance to prove my theory. :-)

We wouldn't have made it without this book!
Three years ago, our 4th child - our tiny son - was born at 28 weeks. This book was loaned to me by the lactation consultant at my hospital while he was in Neonatal-ICU. It showed me that there really was a LOT I could do to help my child, and I wasted no time at all following the suggestions and advice in the book. The nurses caring for my son were very supportive when they found out I wanted to do this! Basically, the technique involves cuddling your naked baby on your bare chest - between the breasts is fine for mom, or in a "nursing" position. Whenever I held my baby with this skin-to-skin contact, tears of happiness and contentment would stream down my cheeks for several minutes. These were wonderful moments during terrifying times (we were not sure he'd live). And this is a wonderful book - worth it's weight in solid gold! I'm buying a copy to keep on hand in case any friends or relatives deliver a premie.

P.S. My son was able to leave the hospital at only 35 weeks post-conception (6 weeks earlier than the doctors estimated!) Today, he's a happy healthy 3-yr old.

A must read for parents of preemies
My daughter was born ten weeks premature and weighed 1270 grams. A wonderful social worker at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York gave me this out-of-print book to encourage my husband and me to do kangaroo care with our little girl. It was an amazing success! We placed our tiny baby over our hearts, skin to skin, for significant periods of time. Not all nurses were familiar with it, but were encouraging once they understood what we were doing. This book gave us the courage, information and confidence to perform what we believe was a critical aspect of her healthy development; not only in the neonatal unit, but until she was big enough to sit up. The book is helpful in explaining the background and theories underlying kangaroo care and describes how parents and health care providers can perform it with care. Our daughter is now a normal, 1 1/2 year old, healthy little girl. Our best wishes to parents of all preemies.

Must Have for Preemie Parents
Kangaroo Care by Susan M. Luddington-Hoe, Susan K. Golant is one of the best things the parent of a premature baby can do for him/herself. It gives specific reasons for using Kangaroo Care (holding the baby skin-to-skin inside your clothes for a period of time daily) and includes the scientific research to back it up. For instance, research has found that a mother's skin temperature increases if the baby's temperature drops, and consequently, she is better at regulating the baby's temperature than an isolette or warmer. The authors give specific instructions which help the nervous parent handle his/her tiny baby and include a section on how to convince the hospital staff to give Kangaroo Care a try. Finally, it is written in a very reader-friendly, conversational tone. This book would be helpful for the parent of ANY newborn, but it should be required reading if your infant is premature. ...
