3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not enough to be your sole Pharm source
I used this text to prepair for the boards, having already read Katzung's Pharmacology in class. This is a concise book, uniform, with many illustrations (many of them however could easily be omitted, since they simply present drug adverse effects graphically), and does a good job in selecting the prototypical drugs from each class. It could be a lot more complete in the section on CNS pharmacology, and on drugs for heart failure and hypertension (for example, it is stated that beta-blockers are contraindicated in heart failure, whereas it is well-known that this kind of drugs is essential for reducing mortality and hospitalizations in these patients). I particularly liked the section on antimicrobial chemotherapy, another high-yield topic for the boards. I have a positive overall impression of the book, but I found myself consulting Katzung more than often; also, it does not compare to the clearly superior Lippincott title on Biochemistry (keep in mind however than biochemistry lends itself much more easily to illustrated presentations than pharmacology). It will help you, but in order to top the exams, you will need an additional resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pharmacy Tech In High School
This is a good book for every one. I am a high school student with a job as a pharmacy tech. I am most of the way though my Bio H class of sophmore year but with a dictionary and online websites for little help this book can teach you everything
most chapers include:
a slight review on the body system that the drug affects such as the first few chapter have to do with cholinergic drugs on the nervous system followed by a few paragraphs about each drug what it does, what is used for theriputically and adverse affects, also there is some times an antidote. if you are looking for a good book stop because this is easy to undersand and has a ton of information

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, concise resource for pharmacology
I used this book primarily for my pharmacology course. I really didn't use it much as I prepared for Step 1. If you are going to get this, get it early while you are taking the course. It is too long to use for board prep, so learn it early and learn it well.

Book Description

Statistics show that out of five thousand compounds with initial promise, five will go into human clinical trials, and only one will become an approved drug. This tiny fraction illustrates the huge complexities involved in bringing a drug to market, a process that brings together scientific research, medical ethics, business, and various regulatory agencies.
Drugs-From Discovery to Approval presents a clear, step-by-step overview of the entire process. Using simple language, this comprehensive guide introduces basic concepts, then moves on to discuss disease target selection and the discovery processes for both small and large molecule drugs. Subsequent chapters explain preclinical studies, clinical trials, regulatory issues, good manufacturing practices (GMPs), and perspectives on the future. Coverage also includes:
* A helpful listing of current FDA and European guidelines
* A special section on regulatory authorities and processes in Japan and China
* Rich illustrations throughout, including more than ninety figures and tables
* Useful appendices on the history of drug discovery and development
* Representative examples of drug mechanisms in action
Written for professionals in the pharmaceutical industry, and readily accessible for students of pharmacy or medicine and others interested in drug discovery, Drugs-From Discovery to Approval represents a practical and approachable reference on this important process.

Book Description

Praise for the First Edition of Design and Analysis of Clinical Trials
"An excellent book, providing a discussion of the clinical trial process from designing the study through analyzing the data, and to regulatory requirement . . . could easily be used as a classroom text to understand the process in the new drug development area."
-Statistical Methods in Medicine
A complete and balanced presentation now revised, updated, and expanded
As the field of research possibilities expands, the need for a working understanding of how to carry out clinical trials only increases. New developments in the theory and practice of clinical research include a growing body of literature on the subject, new technologies and methodologies, and new guidelines from the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH).
Design and Analysis of Clinical Trials, Second Edition provides both a comprehensive, unified presentation of principles and methodologies for various clinical trials, and a well-balanced summary of current regulatory requirements. This unique resource bridges the gap between clinical and statistical disciplines, covering both fields in a lucid and accessible manner. Thoroughly updated from its first edition, the Second Edition of Design and Analysis of Clinical Trials features new topics such as:
* Clinical trials and regulations, especially those of the ICH
* Clinical significance, reproducibility, and generalizability
* Goals of clinical trials and target population
* New study designs and trial types
* Sample size determination on equivalence and noninferiority trials, as well as comparing variabilities
Also, three entirely new chapters cover:
* Designs for cancer clinical trials
* Preparation and implementation of a clinical protocol
* Data management of a clinical trial
Written with the practitioner in mind, the presentation assumes only a minimal mathematical and statistical background for its reader. Instead, the writing emphasizes real-life examples and illustrations from clinical case studies, as well as numerous references-280 of them new to the Second Edition-to the literature. Design and Analysis of Clinical Trials, Second Edition will benefit academic, pharmaceutical, medical, and regulatory scientists/researchers, statisticians, and graduate-level students in these areas by serving as a useful, thorough reference source for clinical research.

Readers may find the term herbal drugstore an oxymoron. But justas conventional drugstores carry prescription drugs and products for skin care, hair care, and even pet care, hundreds of manufacturers are now distributingherbal remedies and treatments for these same ailments and needs. "And just as aconventional drugstore can be a bewildering place, competing herbal products canleave you confused as to what to buy," according to authors Linda B. White, M.D.(Kids, Herbs, Health: A Parents'Guide to Natural Remedies) and Steven Foster (101 Medicinal Herbs: An IllustratedGuide). "We created this book to be your guide to an ever-growing herbalmarketplace."

They deliver even more than they promise. This is one of the most comprehensiveand well-written herbal guidebooks available. The opening pages are devoted toimportant discussions about herb usage, including safety tips (such as nevergiving herbs to children younger than 2 years old without your doctor'sapproval), dosage information, and how to make your own herbal remedies. It hasa quick-glance chart of familiar ailments, along with a listing of commonly useddrugs and herbal alternatives. (For instance, according to the chart, bladderinfections are routinely treated with antibiotics, but numerous herbal remediesexist, including bearberry, cranberry, goldenseal, goldenrod, and Oregon graperoot.)

The meat of the book, however, is devoted to an alphabetized listing of ailmentsas well as extensive discussions of herbal remedies, dosages, and ongoingtreatments. For example, under "sinus infection," readers will find a list ofsymptoms, a sympathetic write-up about the causes and different kinds ofinfections, and a list of numerous herbs and treatments, from echinacea to theChinese herb astragalus. Entries address minor ailments such as a hangover toserious diseases like diabetes and Parkinson's disease. The book closes with athorough index and a listing of manufacturers that sell herbs. Without a doubt, this is the book for treating common ailments with herbs. Anyoneinterested in exploring alternatives to prescription drugs will find safe andsound advice within these informative pages. --Gail Hudson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Reference
I originally picked this book up at the library while taking a class on herbal medicine and was so impressed with it that I bought a copy. It contains clear and concise information on a variety of ailments with not only the herbal remedies but also their drug counterparts. There are "recipes" for herbal mixtures for some of the ailments. This is a book that will be referred to time and time again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Opens up a world of herbal options for optimal health
I like the way this book lists herbal remedies side by side with conventional medical treatments. It's useful to see your options laid out like that. I like the organization. It's easy to find what you need. I also like that one of the authors has an M.D. it's encouraging to see that a traditionally trained doctor sees the value of phytomedicinals. The book is organized by health problems. Under each heading, there is a listing of herbal as well as conventional remedies, as well as a paragraph describing how each remedy works. This method of organization makes much more sense than listing herbs alphabetically, especially for someone who's in a hurry to find something. I only just received the book from amazon.com, but I can already foresee that I will use it often. I only wish they had made the book bigger and printed it on nicer paper. Oh well...you can't have everything, I guess.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent medical reference book!
This is a thorough book that includes information about possible interactions between herbal remedies and prescription drugs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book on using herbs as medicine
Lots of infomation and easy to read. What I liked about the book was that it has a section where it gives you addresses where you can buy herbs and herbal products. I also liked how the book is presented. For each of the herb listed, it givs the source, part used, forms available, uses, and caution. It also lists what herbs to use for what aliments you may have like a cold or acne.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of the best home herbal reference books!
I really LOVE this book, and I have a lot of books on herbal medicine. What I like about the herbal drugstore is how it gives both the typical prescription drugs for common ailments, and the herbal alternatives. It also describes how the herbs are supposed to work (if it is known.) That alone sets this book apart from most other herbal references. This would be a terrific first book on the subject for anyone's home library and I think it adds a lot to my shelf on herbs.

There are good drawings of the herbs, sections on vitamins, excercises, nutrition, combining herbs with prescription medicines (some can interfere; tell your physician) and much more. Yet the book has a very well-designed format, clear print, good organization and is chatty and readable. What more could you ask for? If I could give this book 10 stars, I would. It is THAT good, ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A good place to find descriptions of genuinely obscure drugs
This book contains references to some drugs that I couldn't find anywhere else.Drugs that are no longer in common use, that are used exclusively outside the US, or that have toxicity levels that are normally unacceptable may still find a listing in Martindale. The index is very thorough.I had only two complaints: 1) I don't understand why some drugs information is dropped when new editions come out --I would rather see the book simply grow, rather than sometimes requiring access to older editions, and 2) it doesn't present molecular structures (sigh).Still, the opportunity to find information that is otherwise simply unavailable (try to find dosing schedules for potassium bromide elsewhere, to pick an example) outweighs any complaints.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is it
This book is great. Never before and I suspect never agin has so much information been put in one book. The book explains the manufacturing of mdma, along with its stroger and weaker counter parts. the book tells you what the color of the reactions are going to be. you cant go wrong!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Loved the book but some downfalls!!!!!!!!!!!!
I read Total Synthesis 2. In the book strike tells the reader, Step by Step, How to prefrom the manufactor of MDA, MDMA, MDEA, and whatever. I think tweak. All I wanted was to see the MDA/MDMA. (XTC) :)

Anyhow, I have not tried anything he wrote but I learned alot from his writings and could picture step by step what to get and how to do it. He has Pictures to show you what things look like and what to buy.

The only thing I did not like in this book is that some of his examples on synthesising these drugs are NOT TESTED and really have NO MERIT. If he did not perform the operations how would he really know they work in further case why even write them down and sell it in a book.

Thanks Strike, Great book

1-0 out of 5 stars interesting
quite interesting. in health class we watched a special that had been on nbc and it was about extasy and strike. so i thought i check this out. noone would want this if they saw the tape of the kids from arizona on extasy and they used strikes book. strikes name is hobart huson or something like that and it's really sad that he's doing this but it evidently does give all the info you need but i wouldn't reccomend it

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow enough said!!
If you ever wanted to know the insight on how all these drugs were made this is it. He goes threw everything you need with great examples and detail. This is a very all around good informational book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful adjunct
Total Synthesis II is an informative book on the production of a variety of psychoactive phenylamines, detailing several of the more common processes used to synthesise common psychoactive phenylamines. The beginning of the book has some fairly accurate descriptions of general lab techniques used for organic chemistry work. There is a section which describes some of the more common methods used to obtain the precursors and general reagents required to synthesise a variety of organic chemicals.

Whilst this book attempts to convey to the layman all the necessary knowledge required to manufacture amphetamines, most notably MDMA, it does little to explain the specifics of the chemistry being used. Despite claims to the contrary, it is my contention that this book alone does not provide enough information for your average speed or goog head to manufacture amphetamines in reasonable yields, or at all. This book does provide a useful compendium of current techniques and starting materials, which should be interesting to both law enforcement officials, and those inquisitive souls possessed of the necessary perseverence to garner an education in organic chemistry, and general lab practice. The book makes litle mention of the hazardous nature of many of the production techniques: hazardous to both the "chemist" and the end user, and it is likely that the sorts of people who will buy this book for the purposes of setting up commercial drug labs will injure or kill themselves using some of the techniques herein. This book does achieve the laudable goal of providing useful information to those people already possessed of a working knowlegde of organic chemistry and lab technique, also providing insufficient information for those people who just want to get rich quick by illegal means. This is noteworthy, because one of the main contributing factors in the illegality of drugs is the frequency of ignorant production by people not dedicated enough to understand that with which they play. A useful book, with an unusual narrative style. ... Read more

Some weeks consist of 4 tests. This book has been a definite asset to my education. It is thourough, but consice educational tool. I guess it could easily be printed in handbook format, or better yet, become available in PDA format. That would make it much more practical in my view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy Anesthesiologist
I used this book continuously throughout my residency. It is a very useful tool for perioperative management of patients. I still reference it during practice for those cases that I do not do routinely. It is an excellent reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ehh... Ok
I have been an anesthesiologist for over 15 years... and I would like to say that I don't believe that this book accurately describes the procedures taken in surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read
confidence is key to anesthesia, and by reading this book evrything that we do in the OR starts making sense. Basics texts are for basics only.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good standard text book with some surprising omissions
If you consider buying you might want to add the little "handbook" that goes along with it. This combination works pretty well for review.
Overall, most chapters are well written and complete. However, the index is often less than ideal and can make finding a not so outlandish topic like SBE-prophylaxis rather difficult.
Should you get this one instead of the big "Miller"? Well, the coverage in Miller is still broader and more complete but at the price of a abundant prose, abundant weight and two volumes. Again, in my view the handbook makes this book more useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars magnificaq obra que todo anestesiologo debería tener.
Gracias.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dosage Calculations Made Incredibly Easy
This book truly does make learning how to calculate drug dosages very easy. It takes each step of each type of problem and explains in understandable terms how to set up the calculation and how to solve it. The book is filled with sample calculations and problems for the reader to solve. At the same time that it is a learning tool, it is easy to read and entertaining. It covers all types of calculations even dimensional analysis, explains drug labels, and helps the nurse avoid making drug calculation errors. Great book!

1-0 out of 5 stars A little to simple
This book was a big disapointment I ordered it to help with IV drug probloms. The book is very basis it has mostly basis math like adding, divison, and % there is only about one or two real math probloms that are used as example. This book is not a good learning tool. ... Read more
