Book Description

A tradition of excellence established in multiple editions! Dr. Nadakavukaren has crafted an up-to-date, comprehensive survey of the major environmental issues facing the world today. Its dual approach describes the ecological impact of various human activities combined with specific issues of personal and community health, emphasizing the interrelatedness of the two. Clear, engaging writing imparts readers with a sense of how various environmental issues affect their own lives, and makes them aware of opportunities to participate in the decision-making processes that will influence health and environmental quality in years to come. Our Global Environment, 5/E features new and updated material on a wide array of exciting topics, the liberal inclusion of effective photographs, numerous charts and tables that help clarify information and identify trends, and dozens of carefully chosen "boxed" items within chapters that highlight relevant, current, and illustrative issues and examples. Inserts include: Demographic Disaster in Russia, Fishing Down the Food Chain, New Hope for the Everglades, Microbial Killers, Quicksilver's Dangerous Allure, Black-Market Poison, Global Supermarket, Food Irradiation, Tragedy of the Radium Dial Painters, Nuclear Wastelands, CFC Smuggling, The Politics of Global Warming, Radon: A Hidden Menace in Your House?, and War Over Water?, and Fighting Smog with Reformulated Gasoline. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reading
The book is well written with many important topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't put it down!
Anyone who reads this book will find that it is wonderful. I have only read a few chapters of if for a college course that I am taking, and am looking forward to reading more of it. The information included in the text was so easy to grasp and to remember. The author thinks about every little aspect concerning the issue and draws on it clearly so as to make sure that the reader understands each and every issue involved. This surely is a book for anyone who is interested in environmental issues and what causese those issues to come about and how much of an impact that we humans have on the planet.

3-0 out of 5 stars Simple. Easy.
This is a useful textbook to have as a handy, quick reference. Not optimal for studying or new learning, but a helpful review. The material is thoroughly researched & easily accessible. I give it a "B".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a short-hand, easy to reference version of the full sized Rosen's. It is incredibly useful and easy to use. Great for use in the ED while on a shift or for reading quickly on a subject that you want to learn more about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best if used in the ED
Treatment and diagnostic suggestions are catered for a fully-equipped ED. Less useful in an urgent care or similar environment. Otherwise an excellent resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars concise and easy guide

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful study guide!
I have no pharmacy experience and want to obtain a part-time position as a technician to gain experience prior to applying for pharmacy school next year. In TX, certification is required, so I took the exam on Nov. 15, 03. This is the only book that I studied, and I passed w/ a scaled score of 837 (scale is from 300-900; 650 is passing score). As another reviewer stated, this is a great prep for the math questions. I felt confident in each math question I answered on the exam b/c of this book. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy read and best math prep for PTCB Certification
I'm med student (looking for summer job to help me learn my meds for next year) & had no knowledge of the profession. I studied Noah's book as part of a pharm tech class and got it in 1st week of February 2003 and easily scored a 790 (out of 300-900 scale) on March 30th 2003, without knowing ANY of the meds on the PTCB because I was able to know each and every math question through his book. His formulas are excellent and he teaches alligations which only pharmacists are familiar with but make calculations an absolute breeze. He has several practice exams which simulate the PTCB test better then the PTCB's own practice test on their website, (PTCB's practice test was harder) and some of the exact questions I swear showed up on the board test with a slight change of word or number inserted. If you do all of his practice exams their is no way you can fail. You need to know all of your class I-V schedule drugs, not inside and out, just to be able to identify them in their category. Medical terminology/abreviations for reading prescriptions is excellent don't worry about any abbreviations not in his text. Also, if you are familiar with dimensional analysis used in high school chemistry you can easily do conversions a whole lot easier. (e.g. 5ml=1teaspoon). Know your conversions! I think Noah even sits on the board to make up the questions for the PTCB so if you don't buy this book you'll be taking that exam again. I met professional pharmacy students at the test site who were their to sit for it again. You don't want to be one of them, the exam cost [$$$] each time you sit for it. The only good things about the exam is that they give you plenty of time and you can bring a calculater. Just have a study schedule, discipline and this book and don't waste money on a pharm tech course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief, to the point but complete
As a med student this book is a great intro text to understanding EKG's. Its written simple and to the point, and re-highlights key points, such as the 5 key malignancies in PVC's to detect. I doubt it would be sufficient for a cardiologist, but for med student/basic IM residency should suffice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title doesn't lie!
A colleague recommended this book to me after I lamented that Dubin's competing text was amusing and easy to understand, but didn't really foster any permanent functional understanding of EKGs. Like Dubin's text, Thaler's EKG Book takes a leisurely approach to deconstructing the EKG. However, Thaler's text is a much more functional guide, offering better explanations in a more comprehensive approach to interpreting EKGs. Thaler's text works not only because it is easy to understand, but also because it provides more clinical scenarios, and has a more complete discussion of a wide variety of abnormal EKGs. This book is far superior to Dubin's. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all
As a resident with many years of medical training behind me, I've used my share of ECG textbooks. The two best books for the beginner medical student/intern to use when learning the ECG are Thaler's book (this one) and Dubin's Rapid Interpretation. Both explain the EKG very well, but in my opinion the clarity and simplicity of the physiological and EKG explanations in Thaler's book are unsurpassed.

Despite being a rather slim volume, it is remarkably comprehensive. There is even a chapter towards the end on rare, non cardiac diseases with EKG manifestations. With due respect, the reviewer who said Thaler's book lacks sufficient information doesn't have a clue. Its really very complete, for everyone except Cardiologists and Cardiac fellows, who will definitely prefer Marriot's.

For everyone else, The Only Ekg Book You'll Ever Need is the only Ekg book you'll ever need.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT INTRODUCTION TO EKG'S
This book was awesome!! I started with Dubin's, which was okay, but it just wasn't giving me the basics. This book was very helpful in understanding the basics of EKG's and really helped me on my exams. Easy to read- I read a few chapters between study sessions and I found it is a great reference book to supplement classes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too superficiel for people, who wants to master ECG's
I have read this book, its not the worst book on the market, but is most definitely not the best!
It merely gives you a first hand approach to basic ECG interpretation!
But it's ok as an introduction to ECG's, but don't expect that you are a ECG wiz after you read it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Highest Quality Information
As a medical technician who helps advise patients with nutritional problems, I have read nearly every major dietary supplement guide that has been published in the last decade. This PDR is, by far, the best such guide I have found. The doctors I work with are equally enthusiastic about its in-depth analysis, full citations to the supporting literature and its refreshing objectivity. This is the first time, to my knowledge, that nutritional supplements have been accorded the same in-depth treatment given, in other guides, to prescription drugs. This book should be "must" reading for every doctor, dietician, pharmacist and for every lay person who wishes to intelligently share in the management of his/her own health. There has never been a resource like this before.

For those interested in herbal medicine, there is a separate PDR dealing with herbs; although I do not find the herbal PDR as useful as The PDR for Nutritional Supplements, which covers all the other nutritional/dietary supplements, as well as some of the active constituents of popular herbs, the herbal book is also better than most. Initially I wondered why Medical Economics, the highly respected publisher of the PDR series of books, did not combine the herbs with the other dietary supplements and cover all of them in one reference book. An editor at Medical Economics told me that had they done so they would have had to sacrifice much of the in-depth treatment they have provided--far in excess, as I have previously noted, of anything available in any of the other books--in order to squeeze all of the supplements discussed into one marketable tome. We can all be thankful that they did not do this. Both books are indispensable, as is every word in them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brim Full of Information
Tired of getting your supplement information from the vitamin shop clerk? This is state of the art stuff. Finally here is a book that both the lay person and the physician can safely turn to. The author has no axe to grind. He neither overstates nor understates, but is carefully objective in his presentation and allows the evidence to speak for itself. Dr. Hendler brings to his subject an open mind, wide ranging intelligence, and a rigorous training in all of the relevant disciplines. He refuses to be a shill either for entrenched medical orthodoxy or starry eyed alternative approaches. The result is a cornucopia of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Critical Resource to Control Your Life Through Health Care
The PDR for Nutritional Supplements is the most well organized and substantive publication that I have ever used in over twenty years as a supplement consumer and one of the best literary purchases that I have ever made.

While other publications may purport to be "encyclopedic," they fall short of the mark in paying attention to detail. Dr. Hendler's PDR for Nutritional Supplements is a critical and necessary resource for anyone using nutritional supplements, functional foods and or herbs. The knowledge imparted here will allow you to take control of your life as it relates to health care and maintenance.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book is fantastic. Finally a scientific approach to the complex and often confusing information about supplements. Dr. Hendler makes no unfounded statements and he provides unbiased and objective facts understandable to both the lay person and physician. He even shows us the molecular structures of the supplements. This is a great work by one of the long time leaders in the field.

1-0 out of 5 stars PDR for nutritional supplements
Don't waste your money on this book. Unlike the regular PDR's it does not contain much information, and when looking for herbal remedies that your patients are using, most of them are NOT in here. The supplement name index is only nine pages (most books are at least fifteen to twenty). On the positive side, it does mention the actual studies used for reference under each heading in the article with specific details of the studies and I did find "Bee Pollen," which I could not find in the other books I had. Two cheaper and more helpful books are the "Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements," by Michael T. Murray, N.D. and "The New Encyclopedia of Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements, and Herbs," by Nicola Reavley. These are both well-referenced to medical journals and will also discuss risks and benefits of the remedy (you will need to look for the names of the articles in the reference section, listed by footnote number). When comparing drugs in the PDR to the other two books, much of the information is the same. In addition, these other two books can be used to look up a condition and find a remedy for it. I am still looking for a comprehensive resource for physicians. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text
Charles Ciccone who wrote this text was my teacher in physical therapy school at Ithaca College. Throughout college, everyone knew that if the class was taught by him we would all have an easy time understanding all of the concepts. He was a great teacher who really knew how to explain even the more difficult topics and pharmacology was no exception. This textbook was extrememly useful as it not only explains what types of drugs have specific effects on the body and it's systems, but it is particularly detailed in describing the impact that the drugs may have on rehab. Even in class, this was one aspect that he reinforced. He explained that the reason for talking about certain classes of drugs and then giving a few examples is because the drug world is always changing and so are the names. This way he has provided a wealth of knowledge and in a very easy to understand manner.

I have been out of school for about 3 years and I still occassionally refer to this book when encountering some classes of drugs and this is a great reference to have. I would highly recommend this text to anyone, that is especially if you can't be in one of his classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive pharmacology text for all rehab professionals.
Pharmacology in Rehabilitation by C.D. Ciccone is an all inclusive text and post-graduate reference on drugs, pharmakokinetics, action/side effects/interactions. Of paramount interest and use is the section within each class of drugs entitled "special considerations in rehabilitation."

Section I is a self contained unit in pharmacokinetics with enough detail for any non-prescribing rehab professional. I am sure prescribing clinicians would also find these explanations clear and helpful in deciphering the more involved pharmacology texts.

Section II: CNS, deals with not only the pharmacology but offers an excellent review of the CNS organization and neurotransmitters. I very much enjoyed the section explaining the blood-brain barrier which is clear and removes all mystery. The clinical case studies offered for each specific class of drugs are very realistic and offer a fine teaching tool for the case based academician.

Every section not only teach! ! es the pharmacology involved but reviews all normal and abnormal physiology content involved. Sections cover pain medications, antibiotics, cardiopulmonary classes including antihypertensives, endocrinology and oncology.

This reference text is far more extensive than is reflected in this brief review.

I highly recommend this text as a stand alone text in the classroom and as a post-graduate reference for the clinician's bookshelf. A copy alongside of the PDR in the clinic would be a well used reference. ... Read more

Book Description

Statistics in Practice A new series of practical books outlining the use of statistical techniques in a wide range of application areas:
* Human and Biological Sciences
* Earth and Environmental Sciences
* Industry, Commerce and Finance
Statistical Issues in Drug Development Stephen Senn Professor of Pharmaceutical & Health Statistics, University College, London Statistical Issues in Drug Development provides an accessible text for those working directly in drug development, regulatory and marketing departments within the pharmaceutical industry. As a consequence of regulatory authorities demanding increasingly higher standards, statistics has become a critical element in the design and conduct of drug development programmes. The concepts covered in this volume guide the non-statistician through the most pressing statistical issues and controversies in drug development. Key issues covered include:
* Design & interpretation of clinical trials
* Bayesian & frequentist methods
* Sequential & cross-over trials
* Drug monitoring & pharmaco-economics
The book has been prepared in two sections. The first section considers the role of statistics in drug development from four different perspectives: historical, philosophical, technical and professional. The second section covers a series of controversial topics such as fixed versus random effects for meta-analysis, one-sided versus two-sided tests and the ethics of placebo run-ins. The approachable and wide-ranging coverage of this book will make it invaluable to all those working in drug development and regulation.

5-0 out of 5 stars heavy on issues, provocative and with minimal mathematics
Senn is a great writer. He has written an excellent text on cross-over trials that raises many issues about when such design can be used and what their limitations are. This book covers the gamut of issues in drug development concentrating on important and sometimes subtle issues in clinical trials including design and analysis, intention to treat principle, multiple testing, Bayesian and frequentist approaches and interpretations, meta analysis, regulatory issues and ethics. It also covers cross-over designs, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and pharmacoeconomics.

The introduction gives you a feeling for the approach in the book and how it splits into two parts. Part I, consisting of chapters 2-5, provides some history of the development of statistical methods and some introductory topics that are fundamental to the discussion in Part II.

Part II is the heart of the book where the practical statistical issues in clinical trials are raised. The text is intended for non-statisticians who work in the pharmaceutical industry but to quote part of Senn's preface he states "Although addressed to the life-scientist it is my hope that many statisticians, in particular those studying medical statistics or embarking on a career in drug development, will also find it useful. Above all I hope that it will help communication between the disciplines: a process by which the statistician stands to benefit as much as any other professional in drug development."

I can really appreciate what Senn has done. He explains the issues of intention-to-treat, washout, multiplicity and other problems that I have had to wrestle with and try to explain to MDs and clinical managers. But even more importantly to me than helping me communicate the many issues that I was aware of, he also raises many subtle issues that I was not aware of. This includes questions of bioequivalence, the use of baseline information and particularly percentage change from baseline versus covariate adjustment, problems of inference regarding measurements taken after titration and issuesw in N of 1 trials. I even learned a few new techniques (e.g. Taves minimiization and Atkinson's generalization of it for allocating patients to treatment groups).

The only complaint I can see is that there is not enough detail. However, remember the text was not designed for statisticians and so much of the mathematics and technicalities are deliberately left out.

But Senn does provides a detailed list of relevant references at the end of each chapter that allows the reader to find in texts and journal articles all the detail one might need. Also to aid with communication there is a large glossary of terms at teh back of the book.

This is a great reference for scientists and statisticians as well! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great for therapeutics class and for pharmacy practice
This is a great book, easy to read and follow. Concise enough where you can read it fast but with enough background information so the drug therapy makes sense. You will get a thorough understanding on what drugs are used and why. Picks up on the key points a pharmacist needs to know in practice and a student or someone who is studying for the boards needs to know for exams. Flowcharts are great, has JNC-VI guidelines which are the standard when it comes to drug therapy and pharmaceutical care. Overall, a great book that will enhance your understanding by leaps and bounds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for nurse practitioner students.
I was finding the Pharmacology text in Grad. school very confusing. This book defined M2,M3,Alpha and Beta agonists & antagonists in a clear, easy to comprehend manner. Good clear charts. Cartoons were pretty worthless but I like the book. Good to study from for tests.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick,easy way to understand basis of pharmacology
This book is an exelent way to look at the basic drugs used in medicine. It allows you to see through tables the actions, indicatios, undesirable effects, etc of commonly used drugs. This book is quick, easily understandble and full of pictures that make learning and understanding easier. Exellent for medicine students who need a quick grasp of the most commonly used drugs

2-0 out of 5 stars A JOKE
Someone wrote that this book was wonderful for ANY pharmacology test. HAHAHAHAHA JOKE! Same way with Lippencotts... That is if you are taking REAL pharmacology. Don't waste your time with either of the books if you actually are expected to know something about Pharmacology.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mistakes! Mistakes! Mistakes!
This new edition is filled with typos and mistakes. I wrote a letter to "Dr" Olson pointing out the errors that I found in his new edition. However, I have yet to hear from him. The previous edition is better. It has less typos.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as amazed as everybody else.
Yes, this is a pretty good review book. It has drugs stuffed into tables, and even includes some good text in the chapters. Unfortunately, there just isn't enough info in the book for a pharm class or a USMLE review. Run and buy Lippincotts if you want the best pharm book on Earth. Ridiculously simple, has alot of great books but this really isn't one of them. It is ok but really isn't all that useful. GO BUY LIPPINCOTTS NOW....Believe me that will make your pharm experience simple as it can be. ... Read more

Moini's title "Comprehensive Approach" is a refreshing understatement! Most resources for the pharmacy technician focus on one area of pharmacy practice. This text provides real development for technicians in the various community and institutional practice sites. The approach actually fosters a deep understanding of key professional skills important to the technician's career success. 5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to be able to discuss your drugs intelligently
If you wish to be able to discuss the drugs you take with your psychiatrist intelligently, then read this book! Stephen Stahl explains the psychopharmacology of the drugs used to treat depression and bipolar, but without getting in over your head. An excellent book for any person afflicted with depression or bipolar and wishes to become an "educated mental patient." Id also recommend this book to "non medical" mental health professionals such as psychologists, social workers and others who must work with severely mentally ill persons, but are not directly involved in the prescribing of medications.

Another good book that covers the drugs used in the treatment of depression and bipolar is Jack M. Gorman's "Essential Guide to Psychiatric Drugs." ... Read more
