5-0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book
The Steroid Bible paints an accurate picture of steroid use. The good and bad effects of steroids are covered in great detail. The tips on how to avoid the negative side effects that steroids can cause are more than worth the cost of the book. I have read other steroid books costing over twice as much and I have obtained the best information from The Steroid Bible. The Steroid Bible is often imitated, but never duplicated. The Steroid Bible has been one of the best selling steroid books for over a decade now because it contains valuable steroid information that you can't get anywhere else.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information but somewhat dated and...
Overall, this book is very informative. Most of the information in the book is relevant and useful for a person wanting to learn more about the benefits (and dangers) of anabolic steriods. The author also spends some time discussing other alternatives to steroids and the effects of these products on the human body.

However, a vast majority of the research is dated from the 1980's and almost none is provided from within the past 10 years(except for the real life experiences).

Unfortunately, Belle Labs also uses this book as a platform to also sell their Growth Factor-1 product which is completely hypocritical since the author spends a good amount of time talking down about other products and supplements, about the hype produced by muscle magazines, and about companies out there trying to make a quick buck with useless supplements.

Finally, while the book offers a somewhat neutral representation of steroids, the associated web site appears to promote anabolic steriod usage with several positive testimonials.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Steroid Book For Your Money
I have read other steroid books that cost over twice as much as The Steroid Bible and they simply do not stand up to the quality of information found in The Steroid Bible. There is a reason this book has been around for a long time and continues to sell well. It contains high quality, comprehensive information on steroid use, development, and muscle growth.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!
The Steroid Bible explained the reality behind steroid use and sport long before the current baseball steroid scandal. Athletes who compete at the highest level are encouraged by society at large to break records and make a lot of money. People don't want to see mediocre play. Society rewards athletes for great athletic performance even when it is widely know what many athletes do to achieve it. The Steroid Bible explains how society can allow athletes to compete at the highest level in a safer manner.

Just 1 of 5 successful titles in this USMLE Step 2 & 3 Review Series. The goal of Blueprints in Medicine is to enable the reader to review the core material quickly and efficiently. The topics within this review book were chosen after analyzing over 2,000 review questions representative of the Internal Medicine questions on the USMLE Steps 2 & 3.Rather than comprehensive coverage of Medicine, this book is composed of the "high-yield" topics that consistently appear on the exams. All material in this book is presented either as the work-up of a symptom, or as a discussion of a particular disease, to better prepare you for the new "Clinical Vignette" format of the USMLE Board Exams. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not the final word, either
This is a decent book for an introduction to the wards, but is certainly not the be all and end all for step 2. It should be targeted much more for second year students getting their first exposure to bedside medicine, and presents a nice and digestible look at approaches to various common conditions.

Use it for what it is and don't expect it to save your life, either on the wards or the USMLE, and it'll do just fine by you. Not bad, but again, not complete enough or in depth enough to make it a must-have resource.

2-0 out of 5 stars read this and flunk the step 2
seriously, its a nice read....but it totally lacks the detail you need for the step 2
i found it off the point totally. after reading it twice, i thought "i know nothing".....and that was probably true. i aced the step 2, but thats not cos of this book. it may be a great book for whatever purpose......but not for the step 2 exam. try adam brochert's secrets or crush series. they are like 100 times better. i mean it. trust me on this one.
if you are looking for blue prints books for the step 2....i highly recommend the OBGYN and pediatrics ones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for STEP 2
This book and the whole collection of blueprints are the best sources for the USMLE step 2, they are a killing combination with Crush the boards, they are easy-to-read and they cover the most high yield stuff, also you got to use a good source of questions and practice a LOT, this is the secret to acing the USMLE.If you want to practice clinical vignettes, the Underground clinical vignettes are great . I got an amazing score in the step 2 thank to these books. Good luck !

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful resource for students creating case histories.
If you're a librarian serving first year med students who need to create case histories for hypothetical patients, you'll love this book. Blueprints in Medicine contains the information the students need, usually at a level they can comprehend (with the aid of a dictionary), and contains very little "excess" information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review for wards and Step 2
This book helped me rock Step 2. It may be inappropriate for Step 3, but for Step 2 it's very good. If you want concise review of relevant, high-yield topics in internal medicine, look no further. Helps for 3rd year rotations too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute necessity for all dermatology residents
an indispensable guide. extremely high yield for dermatology boards review. i would suggest getting together with your fellow residents, splitting the work of outlining a chapter each week, and then having the handouts to study from while you are in chicago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Dr. Wolverton has created what will long be a classic of dermatologic texts. This book begins with basic pharmacologic principles and covers all of the major classes of drugs that are used to treat skin diseases including rarely used compounds such as clofazimine. Each drug is discussed from chemical structure to pharmacokinetics to mechanism of action, etc., with handy little tables that nicely supplement the text. The clinical use sections discuss findings of key medical articles and a section on off-label uses discusses case reports of the drugs' use in rarer conditions. Dosages and weight-based dosing tables are included.

There are good sections on other topical compounds (sunscreens, cosmetics, insect repellants). Phototherapy with psoralens and photopheresis have good reviews as well. Several chapters discuss the side effects of major drug classes.

This book is excellent all the way around and is not only a good reference for practicing dermatologists but is helpful also as a stand-up text for residents to read all the way through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive Drug Therapy
The much thinner first edition of this book has been the definitive source for dermatology therapy for ten years. Now, a revised, more comprehensive version details all aspects of drug therapy for dermatologists, and other physicians treating cutaneous disorders. From topical agents to systemic therapies commonly used to treat skin disease to cosmetic agents, this book is all inclusive. A standardized format presents the different drugs in a consistent fashion and tables emphasize important drug interactions and present monitoring guidelines for commonly and uncommonly used medications.

In addition to listing and reviewing FDA approved indications for medications, commonly used "off-label" indications are also listed and the literature supporting their use is given.

Sections of the book are also dedicated to less commonly discussed topics around drug therapy, such as pharmacoeconomics, FDA approval process, and medicolegal issues surrounding drug therapy.

This will be an importantant resource for dermatologists, dermatology residents, medical students, and all physicians who treat skin disease. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars an overly comprehensive review
I do agree that this textbook is a very well-done, well written book with a lot of value for anesthesiologists. However, as a tool for oral board study it is actually a bit too comprehensive and inclusive. Take my word for it, during your oral board exam you are not going to be asked about histologic changes in the bronchial mucosa of the asthmatic or the synthetic pathway of catecholamines. The person studying for the oral anesthesiology board doesn't have time to waste learning material that he or she doesn't need to know. I recommend instead Clinical Cases in Anesthesia by Reed. Same format, much more focused on the material that the anesthesiologist must know for the oral exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients
This is an excellent book that contains every phamaceutical excipient that I have ever had the need to know about. I work for a dietary supplement manufacturer and we quite often get calls from customers that want to know all about all those "other ingredients" that are listed on product cartons. The book has a section for each excipient and each excipient has the following sections: Nonproprietary Names, Synonyms, Chemical Name and CAS Registry Number, Empirical Formula and Molecular Weight, Structural Formula, Functional Category, Applications in Pharmaceutical Formulation or Technology, Description, Pharmacopeial Specifications, Typical Properties, stability and Storage Conditions, Incompatibilities, Method of Manufacture, Safety, Handling Precautions, Regulatory Status, Pharmacopeias, Related Substances, Comments, Specific References, General References, and Authors. While I have a background in Biology, I found several of the sections to be easy to understand by several of our employees that do not have a science background. While, still, there was highly technical/scientific information as well. Each excipient's information is contained in 2-4 pages. The book is arranged alphabetically which makes finding information easy. In addition, it contains an index that is very well constructed. For example: If you are looking for an Emulsifying Agent, the index lists all the excipients that can be used for that purpose. I can't say enough how easy this book is to use. Its information is pared down to the essential text, and is chocked full of graphs, charts and microscopic photos of the excipients. ... Read more

Book Description

Did you know…

  • The leading drug problem in the U.S. today is not the use of illegal drugs—it is the use of legal drugs.
  • The fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. is properly prescribed and administered medication. By adding improperly prescribed medication to that equation, it becomes the third leading cause of death.
  • There are over 2 million hospital admissions and 180,000 deaths each and every year in the U.S. due solely to adverse drug reactions
  • When the FDA approves a medication for use by the general public, less than half of the serious drug reactions are known. You—the patient—become the final clinical trial.

If you aren’t aware of these facts, and you don’t have the tools and information to counter them, you are at risk.

Experienced family doctor Ray Strand writes his patients prescriptions every week, but he also believes that prescribing drugs should be a last resort in most medical cases—not a first choice. In Death by Prescription he provides simple guidelines to help readers protect themselves and their families from suffering adverse reactions to prescription medication.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Balanced Examination of Drug Use
This is an important book for anyone who takes prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs or herbals. The first part examines the relationship between drug companies and the FDA, which has changed significantly since the early 1990's. Much of the funding for new drug review now comes from the drug manufacturers. The approval process is faster and testing time shorter. The author details how the public increasingly plays a role in "testing" in the form of "post-marketing surveillance" and that the adverse drug reactions encountered are under reported. Marketing includes massive distribution of "free sample" to physicians, many of whom may not be familiar with precautions -- and hence do not alert patients to warning signs and symptoms. Also, advertising of prescription medications has increased greatly in the last few years, which has greatly increased drug use and pressure on physicians to prescribe medications.
Other sections of the books discuss similar concerns with nonprescription medications (many of which recently required prescriptions) and with herbal medications.
The book is "spiced" with case histories that are real page turners. The author has done a real service to the public by describing the scope of the adverse drug reaction problem (#3 killer), and by describing several of the reasons why this has become such an overwhelming concern.
This review is written from the perspective of someone who has been in nursing for over 20 years and who has seen lots of people on lots of medications. The author, a physician, is not suggesting that people stop taking medications that may be important to their health. But he provides guidelines and tools to help individuals evaluate what they need, including the use of a pharmacist and internet resources. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Tool for Caregivers
"This must be a mistake! How could his drug costs rise from $150 per month to $1101 in just three weeks?" My hand shook while I read the pharmacy bill.

The bill was accurate. In only three weeks at an Alzheimer's care unit, my father's drug expenses had soared an incredible 734%. And, the way I saw it, his quality of life had decreased about the same percentage. Walking and talking when he entered, he now spent his days in a wheelchair, unable to walk and drugged, in a constant stupor.

"I've got to do something." The thought repeated over and over in my head. "How can this be?" Then a quick trip to the grocery brought the help I needed. It came in the form of a thick paperback book, The PDR Pocket Guide to Prescription Drugs.

The PDR Pocket Guide provides tons of information for all prescription drugs currently on the market. Information includes:

a. generic equivalents,
b. why the drug is prescribed,
c. how it should be taken,
d. when it should not be taken,
e. side effects and special warning, and
f. possible interactions with other drugs and food.

The PDR is available through Amazon.com, or you may find a copy like I did at your local grocery or bookstore. Jam-packed with almost 1700 pages of information, this paperback is a surprisingly affordable $6.99.

Using the pharmacy's bill as a list of medications, I read the PDR report for each drug my father was using. What I found astonished me.

Two of fifteen drugs prescribed were being used "off-label." One was specifically contraindicated for use with Alzheimer's patients. Two others were from drug families that I had previously pointed out in my father's list of allergic reactions.

Without this "pocket" guide, I'd never have understood what was happening to my father.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spooky, Interesting and informative , and easy to read
Forgotten Future takes the reader from the fields and lakes where wildlife is having reproduction problems to the labratory where PHD scientists, are struggling with the mystery of synthetic chemicals disrupting hormone messages in developing, (unborn) wildlife and humans. Easy to read, this book unfolds like a mystery novel and draws some very serious conclusions about the toxic world we have created for ourselves by using billiions of tons of synthetic chemicals. We are all un-wittingly participating in a dangerous global experiment with numerous persistant, synthetic chemical toxins which, invisably, disrupt and scramble the body's chemical messages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please stop the world now, I¿d like to get off¿.
Without doubt, this is the most terrifying book I've ever read. Stephen King, move over, reality bites.....Nope, this is not fiction, this is the air we breathe, the food we eat - even the very containers we eat from. No place on the planet is safe anymore, so would someone please stop it and let me off now?

For me, the most terrifying aspect was the dawning realization that I had read many of the research papers cited within, but had not drawn the elements together. As the pieces fell into place, my eyes opened in horror at the implications....and I looked down at my infant son, who I was breastfeeding, appalled at the choices now confronting me.

But make no mistake, this is no tabloid horror, nor a new age book on the environment. This is a well-researched work, with an opening prelude by Vice President Al Gore. The facts are presented in a clear, concise manner that does not require a college degree to understand, but nor will it bore academics. Told with the same mounting tension as Richard Preston's The Hot Zone, the real terror comes when the reader realizes that unlike Ebola, there is no possible escape. This is not some emerging virus in a distant country, this is here...now, already in us....

Current human population growth masterfully disguises an insidious biological time bomb already exploding within us all. In our desire to create new and better chemical nightmares manufactured under the guise of modern living conveniences, we may be headed to extinction as fast and sure as any currently endangered species. ...And it's hitting is right where it hurts most, the physical and psychological abilities we need to reproduce.

But like a well presented piece of research, with the null hypothesis clearly in mind, this book does not draw unfounded conclusions. It allows you, the reader, to draw your own. And when you do, you may never sleep well again.

Buy this book. Read it, lend a copy to a friend and encourage them to buy it. It may be the single most important book you ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stop, I Want Off Now
The Industrial Revolution ushered in a lot of nice toys and some really convenient products - if it hasn't made our lives a little more frantic - but with this book, and now a host of other books like it, we see that the end results of our mad-dash to make and remake the world using our new scientific know-how is taking a huge toll on human health: Sperm counts are plummeting, cancer-rates are sky high, the immune system is being undermined, and hormone-mimics are quite possibly eroding our intelligence and altering our behavior. Without realizing it, we have put ourselves in grave peril, and ironically enough it is a cadre of scientists (life scientists, that is, ecologists and biologists) who are sounding the wake-up call -- ironic because it was their ilk, the chemists and scientific industrialists, who brought us pesticides, PCBs, and other toxic substances in the first place. The sad fact is, we all have these substances in our body now. There is no way to escape the new, chemicalized environment we have constructed. So in other words, there is no getting off this joy ride. That said, if you are interested in learning about natural detoxification processes, read "Hormone Deception" (Berkson, 2000). There is a lot of useful information in there, as well as a chapter about how diet and excercise can help keep these substnaces at lower levels by speeding up and aiding the body's natural detoxification processes. In a nutshell, she suggested to eating green, yellow and red veggies, taking in a lot of protein (nuts and seeds work fine for veggetarians), getting a regular dose of antioxidents, and excercising until you sweat for 30 minutes six days a week. For more detailed information, read the book. Take care of your body. Tread lightly on the planet. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should be mandatory reading
The book is amazing it is pleasant to read and extremely informative. All those who are concerned about the earth, your children, and existence on human beings should read this book. One of the best books I have ever read. This book should be mandatory reading in high school and college.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Chilling Book
The book "Our Stolen Future" by Theo Colborn and John Peterson Myers, two leading environmentalists and Dianne Dumanoski, an environmental journalist, list the compelling effects of chemical contamination revealed from wildlife studies, laboratory experiments and human data. Synthetic chemicals are now linked to reproductive problems: a low sperm count (the male sperm count has plummeted by 50% since 1940 worldwide), infertility, genital and urethra abnormalities, the feminization of males, the masculization of females and hormonally triggered human diseases such as breast and prostrate cancer. Other symptoms include neurological and developmental disorders in children, the abnormal functioning of the thyroid, endocrine and immune system and mental and emotional development.
The danger we face in being exposed to industrial chemical contaminates is not simply disease and death. Something more sinister than straightforward poisoning may be occurring-the actual destruction of our human potential and our ability to reproduce.
Carcinogens are poisons that kill cells or attack DNA, other man-made chemicals target hormones. These synthetic hormones mimic the effects of natural hormones, usually the female hormone estrogen, by altering the natural synthesis of hormones or altering hormone receptor levels. The effects most often appear in the offspring, not the exposed parent. Many mothers are unknowingly passing their chemical legacy on to their babies through their womb and through their breast milk.
Eighty thousand chemicals have been registered with the Environmental Protection Agency in the last 60 years. Twenty new chemicals enter the market a week. Few are properly tested. These chemicals include pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, industrial detergents, and household cleaners. They are found everywhere in our water, air, soil, and food. They may even lurk in unexpected places such as the nonylphenols and the alkylphenols found in plastics and personal care items.
The chemicals may be low in the environment but they resist breakdown and accumulate in the body fat of humans over time. Because of food contamination the concentrations are higher in the bodies of animals up the food chain and in humans. This chronic synthetic hormone exposure is unprecedented in our evolutionary experience. However, most research money for investigating the effects of environment contamination of health goes to cancer studies. Also, because industrial chemicals have become a major sector of the global economy, any evidence linking them to serious human and ecological health problems is met with opposition.
Colburn, Myers and Dumanoski chillingly warn, "There is no clean, uncontaminated place, nor any human being who hasn't acquired a considerable load of persistent hormone-disrupting chemicals ... we are altering the fundamental systems that support life."
What can we do? We need to get political. We have to clean up the toxins in our environment and ourselves to reclaim our future. ... Read more
