Many Americans have wondered why prescription drugs have become so expensive while advertising for those drugs seems to grow exponentially. Former New England Journal of Medicine Editor Marcia Angell has some answers. The pharmaceutical industry, according to Angell, is fraught with corruption and doing a disservice to customers, the federal government, and to the medical establishment itself. In The Truth About the Drug Companies, Angell explains how a huge portion of the revenue generated by "Big Pharma" goes not into research and development but into aggressive marketing campaigns to sell their product. She describes how, even though the drug companies claim that it costs them an average of 802 million dollars per drug to develop new medicines, that figure is obscenely inflated since it factors in marketing as well as expected interest the company would have received had they invested the money in the open market. Meanwhile, Angell says, most of the R & D work is done by colleges and universities funded by the government. There are also problems with the drugs themselves, Angell indicates, since a majority are "me-too drugs", slightly modified versions of existing products which meant to address concerns of consumers most likely to spend money on pharmaceuticals. Thus, the market is filled with remarkably similar drugs to treat depression and high cholesterol while potentially life-saving medicines for diseases afflicting third-world countries are discontinued because they aren't profitable. In the books most damning passage, Angell tells of the high-priced junkets offered to doctors, ostensibly offered as educational opportunities that seem to constitute little more than bribes. The prognosis for reform is a grim one, Angell indicates, due to the massive cash reserves and lobbying efforts of "Big Pharma." Indeed, that lobby was hard at work trying to discredit her claims immediately upon the book's publication. But for anyone who's paid a pharmacy bill, The Truth About the Drug Companies is a fascinating read. --John Moe ... Read more

Morethan 130 chapters grouped into twelve sections take the reader step bystep through every phase of a clinical trial--from planning trials andwriting protocols to analyzing data, publishing results, and evaluatingpublished literature. Dr. Spilker's approach is uniquely practical,addressing problems of study design and data interpretation from aclinical, nonmathematical perspective. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference for Start-up Companies
Working in a small biotech start-up company, I think this book is a great reference especially if you have limited resources and interested in conducting drug development the "right" way. This text covers all areas of drug development and useful for people in regulatory affairs, project management, clinical affairs, and data management.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre book - full of fluff
This is a decent book, but packed with padding. You have to read 50 pages to get 1 page worth of useful information. Spilker is adequately familiar with clinical trials, but his writing style tends to meander a lot.

If you're a complete novice, it may be of use, but you will outgrow it after a few months. And unfortunately, the book is somewhat outdated--clinical trials are much more sophisticated now. I'm not sure what the person below is talking about--using it after 30 years in the industry!?! Anyone who's been in the industry for more than couple of years should know everything there is in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This text is the industry standard.
If you could only have one book on clinical research, this should be the one. It is comprehensive, and presents much of the material in tabular format that greatly facilitates learning. I have been in the drug development business for over 30 years and still refer to this text on a regular basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best guideline book on the subject.
A basic handbook for management of clinical trials. This is a "must" reading for anyone who deals with clinical trials. It covers areas of protocol development, regulatory issues in human clinical trials. There is a detailed section on data collection, handling data and statistical issues.Also an introduction to project management.The book contains a large amount of tables easy to read and with great "tips". ... 2-0 out of 5 stars good.. but not great
Too basic. Looks like abc arithmetics. I couldn't find stuff such as "Parenteral Medication" calculations -- the hard stuff. Has elementary school pictures, layout, fonts. Book Description

The indispensable resource for health professionals on potentially unsafe chemicals--now fully updated
Proctor and Hughes' Chemical Hazards of the Workplace, Fifth Edition provides a comprehensive reference text for health professionals who need toxicology data on chemicals that may be encountered in various work settings. Building on the success of the Fourth Edition-already a standard text-this new edition updates and revises the more than 600 entries of that text, and also adds monographs on new compounds.
Introductory chapters cover toxicological concepts, clinical manifestations of exposure, the diagnosis of occupational disease, and industrial hygiene aspects of chemical exposures. The rest of the text consists of more than 625 alphabetically arranged entries on individual compounds, each of which includes:
* Chemical formula
* CAS number
* 2003 ACGIH (American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists) threshold limit value
* Synonyms
* Physical properties
* Sources of exposure
* Routes of exposure
* Toxicological data
The toxicological data includes both acute and chronic effects, especially as related to any known exposure levels. The data emphasizes human studies and cases over animal data whenever sufficient information is available, and addresses any known carcinogenic, mutagenic, fetotoxic, or other reproductive effects. Clinical information is presented in a succinct narrative form to aid in understanding.
Easy to use, in-depth, and comprehensive, Proctor and Hughes' Chemical Hazards of the Workplace, Fifth Edition offers occupational health physicians, nurses, industrial hygienists, and other safety professionals an invaluable and up-to-date resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Decent
i just took the pcats yesterday and im happy to say that this was a very good book familiarizing you with what to expect. each section of the test is thoroughly outlined with what to study. i took the outline for the chemistry and biology sections in the book and bought the cliffs notes for biology, a&p, and chemistry and matched up the outline in this book with the table of contents in the cliffs notes word for word. the two combined are a powerful tool in preparing for this test. the verbal section on the test was also spot on with the preparations in this book. also, the two practice tests are very helpful in letting you know, for the most part, how the test works and what to expect. now the cons. the quantitative section was, as said before in other reviews, over-simplified as was the reading comprehension, nowhere near as difficult on the real test. times given for each section in this book are outdated as well. i recommend also checking out the pcat tips given at www.pcat-test.com, invaluable in my opinion. all in all, if you wish to succeed on this test, this is an priceless source and combined with the other two sources will undoubtedly help you succeed in becoming part of the most overpaid profession out there. enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars The best prep book for pcat out there!(at least for now)
I've just finished taking the Jan 24th, 2004 pcat. This book is the closest you'll ever find, at least at the moment, to the actual pcat. The biology practice questions in this book are quite similar to the ones you'll encounter on the real exam. I found the verbal and bio sections on the exam quite easy, probably owing to the fact that I did all the practice tests in this book. The reading section on the real exam was alright(too many "what is not true", "what does the author infer/mean" questions). One piece of advice: KEEP TRACK OF YOUR TIME, especially in the math and chemistry sections! The math section is definetely a killer. You have 45min to finish 65 questions(which means you have less than a min for each question). I ran out of time on the chem section. There were a lot of conversion questions..not much organic, though. There is also an experimental section on the test. Anyway, getting to the point, this book will help you master the basic concepts tested in the bio, chem, math, and verbal sections. For the reading part though, I suggest you get the Kaplan book. A fourth or fifth grader can do the questions on the reading part in this book(seriously!) I have a good feeling about this and I'm eagerly awaiting my score(they said it'll take 4-6 weeks...bummer!) I hope this review helped a bit and I wish all you wannabe pharmacists the best of luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to review for the PCAT
I took the PCAT in Jan, 2004 and used only this book to prepare for it. I have to say that the material in this book covers all the topics tested on the PCAT. The practice questions for the Quantitative, Biological, and Chemistry sections were comparable. The Reading comp was bit harder on the actual test, but not too bad. I primarily used this review book and only used other texts to further elaborate on specific terms/concepts I was unfamiliar with. Some advise: watch your time on the Reading Comprehension section and the chemistry section. I found myself rushing towards the end even though I knew all the concepts! Also, the time given for the Quantitative section may not be enough, so pace yourself. In the end, I got a 99% composite score (which got me into the two pharmacy schools I applied to), so the book was definitely worth the money. Goodluck!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Seems like the best book right now.
The book might have some flaws, but it seems that it is the best book out there. This seems to be the consensus after reading several reviews on several different web sites. However, this book is not very helpful on what to review. It gives you basic outlines - "learn everything in biology, chemistry, etc." Don't buy the book so that someone can tell you to study everything. Pay me the $10 instead.

The book comes with several test which are fairly helpful. I had no idea what to expect on the PCAT. I have been out of school for several years and don't have any resources that a typical college student might. I did read many reviews, and to sum it all up - Buy this book, take the practice tests. Supplement your learning with Cliff's biology, chemistry, etc. Don't bother practicing reading comprehension. Don't know the best way to study for math either, but for me, a couple practice tests to get into the swing of things helps. Like I said, I haven't been in school for quite a while. I never even took a BIO class in college. I, however, did do very well, thanks to this book and Cliff's reviews. Good Luck.

3-0 out of 5 stars helpful, but not what I had hoped for
The practice tests helped me get used to the format for the test, but I was disappointed there wasn't much of a review of test material. For the Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension tests, I recommend digging out an old SAT prep book. Overall, I think the best thing you can do is take as many practice tests as possible. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to pharmaceutical process engineering.
An above average treatment, although a bit too brief in many areas, especially the various unit operations. 5-0 out of 5 stars Textbook for Pharmacy Technician Program
If you have never worked in a pharmacy before and want to pass the pharmacy technnician certification exam, then you need more than just a certification review book. You will also need a textbook that explains comprehensively pharmacy laws and the operating procedures of a typical pharmacy. Because it isn't a certification review, be aware that it doesn't have enough practice problems. Overall, it is an excellent textbook to use with a workbook.

2-0 out of 5 stars WOULDN'T BE BAD IF THEY COULD GET IT RIGHT
The information presented is fairly easy to understand, interesting, and seems to be thorough. So what's the problem? I have to say, I would absolutely love the textbook and its corresponding workbook if it wasn't for one truely frustrating aspect - there are way too many errors. It's incredible! Here's an example - a question regarding roman numeral conversions (pg 38 wkbk)- what is 14 in roman numerals? well, anybody who's gone through grade school could tell you it's XIV - the answer key tells you it's CIV (104!!). How about this one (pg 85 txt) - convert 1mg to g: ok, i'm thinking - DUH - .001g - correct answer, according to the answer key is .011g -- Now, this is not quite a big deal when it's very easy to tell the book is wrong (yet, again) - but then, when you get into more difficult calculations and you can't trust the answer key, it becomes very frustrating. When you take into account the fact that you've spent over $60 for the text and workbook and you can't count on the information to be correct it becomes enraging. There are also a plethora of idiotic typos to furthur insult you for sending these people your money. Example (pg 108 txt) convert 120 mcg to mg - answer according to the key: 120 mcg = 0.12 mcg - that's 0.12 MCG not MG. Or, how about his - convert 50% to a decimal. Answer according to the key: 50/100. Now, the last time I checked that was something called a fraction - a decimal looked more like this: .50 - This isn't even the tip of the iceberg. I just have one question for Morton Publishing Co...Do you guys happen to employ anyone there called an EDITOR? I just hope to God you all don't have anything to do with the answer keys the PTCB is holding in their possession. If you do, I quit now.

Book Description

If you're either taking, or thinking of taking, vitamins or herbs along with your prescription and non-prescription medications, then you and your family must have this book! Millions of people, just like you, use both without knowing that some combinations are beneficial while some can be downright dangerous.
Based on the information from Healthnotes Online database, the A-Z Guide to Drug-Herb-Vitamin Interactions is written by a highly respected team of natural medicine experts --medical doctors, naturopathic physicians, and pharmacists-who have created a natural health information resource that is both comprehensive and user-friendly.
The A-Z Guide to Drug-Herb-Vitamin Interactions helps you learn which drugs can deplete your body's essential nutrients; which supplements can help your prescriptions work better, or reduce drug side effects; and which herbs and drugs should never be taken together.
Did you know that:
·Along with bad bacteria, antibiotics kill good bacteria that need to be replenished?
·Birth control pills deplete the body's stores of folic acid?
·Asian ginseng may help your flu vaccine work better?
·Ginkgo can help reduce Prozac-induced sexual dysfunction?
·Vitamin K can destroy the drug action of Warfarin®?
"The A-Z Guide to Drug-Herb-Vitamin Interactions is presented in a very clear and concise manner—making it accessible to both health professionals and consumers. It is an indispensable resource for people who take medications, as well as those who prescribe or dispense them—and it's especially useful for anyone concerned about nutrition and herbal therapies. It will be an essential resource on my bookshelf."—Joe Graden, MS, Author The Peoples' Pharmacy
"This comprehensive review of drug-nutrient interactions—by far the most exhaustive of its kind—is an invaluable tool for all consumers and professionals, integrating the worlds of conventional and alternative medicine."—Julian Whitaker, MD, Editor, Health & Healing newsletter
"The use of this excellent book can do so much to improve a person's general health and knowledge. Putting into practice the easy-to-use information in this book can help avoid many potential problems and can greatly increase good health and well-being."—James M. Brodsky, RPh, Instructor, University of Southern California College of Pharmacy

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great.
There's a lot of good information in this book but I would not recommend it as a reference.

First of all, it isn't totable: it's format makes it a clunker. It's 8 1/2 by 11" and its page format is such that the book could have been printed with half the paper. The added appendices are pretty useless considering the main A to Z section entries pretty much tell you exactly the same thing.

Second of all, the formatting is inconsistent; adding question to your inquiry. Did they make this entry as complete as they did that one?

I very much prefer Meletis/Jacobs' and Brinker's books to this one. For intuitiveness and extensive cross-referencing, Meletis/Jacobs' wins hands down.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for Today's Health Consumer
The authors of this book have made a significant contribution to the resources available for today's health consumer. By providing this current, well-organized and useful "guide" they are helping those of us trying to protect or improve our own health, and those of us facilitating others in doing that, tremendously! Their research is thorough and and unbiased - I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" Reference for Patients and Doctors.
The editors and authors of this HealthNotes publication have presented the most up-to-date information in an easy to read format without compromising scientific judgement. In the information world of alternative medicine, it is all to easy for conventional medical texts to react out of fear by recommending "extreme caution" for just about any prescription or possible nutrient/herbal interaction. "The A-Z Guide..." does a tremendous job of integrating insights of physicians form several different disciplines (the book is written by an MD, ND, and DC, et. al.), which provides the reader with a diverse and thorough scientific review of known and suspected interactions. I have personally found this book extremely helpful in the waiting room and on my desk as a quick refernce. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars No longer a good reference book for compounders
I have been familiar with this book since college and really loved it. Now I work in Compounding and can afford it, only to discover that it has very few formulations, does not have a cross index, the page numbers in the index do not match the page numbers in the book and there are very few latin names in use. In my country some physicians still prescribe in Latin or use Latin names. I am very dissapointed in the book, no longer a reference for compounders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent account of all Pharmacy concepts
Although this book is not a book for your reading pleasure, you can approach it that way to. Thousands of pages of incredibly detailed and valuable information. Biotechnological and biopharmaceutical information were not as detailed and comprehensive as I wanted them to be but I understand the need to review and find some 'holding on' within the pharmacy industry before it is placed in this book. Nevertheless, a must read! A must have!

This two volume set has come in handy many times. It is a great aide in formulating products and explaining testing procedures along with a detailed description of each drug with a chemical formula. I only wish that they would make an updated version. ... Read more
