4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference, but a little too detailed
This IS the most comprehensive drug information resource. The monographs are very detailed, and organized in a logical manner. Because it is SO inclusive, we use it as a back up and not on the front line. At times, it can be too cumbersome when you need a quick reference. However, it is a must for every pharmacist to have as a complete source to check and double check.

The DI Essentials is a great alternative for a quicker, more easy to use reference for front line pharmacists, physicians, and nursing staff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best reference!
This is the most comprehensive drug information reference out today. The monographs are very detailed and easy to use. The off-label uses are evidence based, researched, and supported, unlike many other references on the market. A must have for ALL hospital staff, it is the only remaining resource that is completely unbiased and unaffiliated with for-profit drug companies.

AHFS is the only source that our hospital trusts for evidence based, referenced, and detailed drug information. ... Read more

Book Description

The peroral application (swallowing) of a medicine means that the body must first resorb the active substance before it can begin to take effect. The efficacy of drug uptake depends on the one hand on the chemical characteristics of the active substance, above all on its solubility and membrane permeability. On the other hand, it is determined by the organism's ability to absorb pharmaceuticals by way of specific transport proteins or to excrete them. Since many pharmacologically active substances are poorly suited for oral intake, a decisive criterion for the efficacy of a medicine is its so-called bioavailability.

Written by an international team from academia and the pharmaceutical industry, this book covers all aspects of the oral bioavailability of medicines. The focus is placed on methods for determining the parameters relevant to bioavailability. These range from modern physicochemical techniques via biological studies in vitro and in vivo right up to computer-aided predictions. The authors specifically address possibilities for optimizing bioavailability during the early screening stage for the active substance.
Its clear structure and comprehensive coverage make this book equally suitable for researchers and lecturers in industry and teaching.

I bought this book on the recommendation of a 1st year pharmacology professor who must be getting a kickback from the authors. I did not like the layout which is not user friendly. 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book
In a previous review for the 3rd edition I was harsh in my assessment because of the extensive errata sheet. HOWEVER, as a practicing graveyard hospital pharmacist I have come to greatly respect this reference. This version doesn't have an errata sheet, and I haven't taken the time to figure out if that is because there are no errata or they just haven't had time to figure them out. BUT, I would not go into a shift without a copy of this book on the shelf. It is that good.. and I use it to guide docs weekly. Without hesitation I say 'BUY THIS BOOK', it's a lifesaver - really.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great toxicology handbook
This is a concise and well-written toxicology handbook. Many additions and updates since the 2nd edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great General Toxicology Text
This is a great text. It is wonderful for a speedy consult or general tox review, and is great for those in Emergency Medicine as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A complete, concise, clinicians guide to poisonings.
Olson brings together experts in medicine, pharmacology and toxicology to produce a masterful guide to poisoning and overdose. This book is written for the bedside clinician and provides a rapid guide to specific exposures, kinetics and treatment. Items are generally one page or less and contain the elements you need to care for your patient. Other books have more information but Olson gives you what you need quickly and in a very concise format. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Nuts & Bolts of Antibiotics
This book was written by the eminent biochemist Christopher Walsh, whose broad research interests include the study of antibiotic action and resistance. It is extremely well written and organized, with an abundance of excellent illustrations. The approach is to give the reader an in depth but not exhausting coverage of several key topics in modern antibiotic research. Both novice and seasoned researcher will find much of value within the pages of this modest sized book. This important work is published at a period in time in which the resistance of a broad range of pathogenic bacteria to antibiotics has grown to alarming levels. At the same time, many pharmaceutical companies have recently abandoned research and development of new antibiotic agents.

Walsh starts the book with a brief chapter on fundamental antibiotic concepts. Where do antibiotics come from? How do they work? How does resistance develop? He next launches into a thorough review of the main classes of antibiotics, interweaving antibiotic chemical structures and targets of the drugs with the underlying microbial physiology processes that are targeted. He begins with the various classes of bacterial cell wall inhibitors, emphasizing the members of the large beta-lactam class, as well as glycopeptides and moenomycin. Next he delves into the multiple classes of protein synthesis inhibitors. He makes full use of the latest structural data emerging from X-ray crystallography of ribosomal subunits, to illustrate the mechanisms of drug action. He covers the macrolides, tetracyclines, and aminoglycosides, as well as the new glycylcyclines and oxazolidinones. The DNA topoisomerases are next featured as targets, and the interactions of quinolone antibiotics with DNA gyrase and topoisomerase. This chapter was a bit short and sparse in some details as compared to the preceding chapters, but does hit the main highlights. A final chapter in this section addresses other antibiotic classes such as the folate metabolism antagonists (sulfa drugs and trimethoprim), as well as peptide antibiotics.

The next section addresses the many mechanisms of antibiotic resistance. These four chapters examine different types of mechanisms employed by bacteria to evade antibiotics. Succinct coverage of the broad range of beta-lactamases and the aminoglycoside modifying (inactivating) enzymes are found in a chapter on enzymatic destruction or modification of antibiotics. This is followed by a very nice summary chapter around antibiotic efflux pumps, which again incorporates some structural biology. Unfortunately, the book was published just prior to the latest crystallographic studies of the RND class AcrB pump, which has added much to our understanding of efflux pumps. The final resistance chapter highlights target modification or replacement. The methicillin resistance story in Staphylococcus, mediated by PBP2a, is detailed, as is the resistance mediated by the mosaic PBP genes in pneumococci. Macrolide resistance by ribosomal methylation and the fascinating story of vancomycin resistance by the restructuring the terminal D-alanine dipeptide target is covered (Walsh's laboratory was a major contributor to the vancomycin story).

The next section of the book deals with the biosynthesis of antibiotics by producing organisms, primarily Streptomyces species. These chapters interweave the genetics and biochemistry of secondary metabolism. The signaling pathways used among producer organisms, as well as the gene regulation of the individual antibiotic biosynthetic genes, which are clustered on the chromosome are discussed. There is a chapter on each on polyketide antibiotic synthesis (erythromycins and tylosin) and non-ribosomal synthesis of peptide antibiotics (penicillins, bacitracin, vancomycin).

The book ends with 3 chapters on identifying new antibiotics. A survey of targets, both "old" and new is presented, and several suggestions for novel ways to interfere with bacterial function are briefly reviewed. Another chapter examines identifying new chemical entities with antibacterial properties. The initial part of the chapter emphasizes combinatorial chemistry approaches. Unfortunately, this process to date has led to only sparse results, with some inhibitors identified. As Walsh notes, the conversion of a chemical inhibitor of an antibacterial enzyme target to a lead compound that can be subsequently endowed with all the myriad pharmacological properties necessary to be a drug is an extremely daunting task. The vast majority of compounds identified cannot be successfully modified to possess the properties necessary to be a drug. A second approach that he covers, the modification by genetic means of antibiotic producing organisms to synthesize new antibiotics (combinatorial biosynthesis), may be more promising.

Walsh closes out the book with some thought provoking chapters around the proper use of antibiotics, and strategies to minimize resistance development. He highlights the antibiotic resistant pathogens of the 21st century, and the continued problem of methicillin resistant staphylococci and vancomycin resistant enterococci. He makes it abundantly clear that there has been no victory in the fight against infectious diseases, and the reports from the front lines are less than encouraging for the future. ... Read more

Book Description

Approximately one million Americans per year take high doses of prednisone and related drugs (glucocorticoids) to treat serious illnesses and conditions ranging from asthma to rheumatoid arthritis to kidney disease to organ transplantation. Wile these medicines may have unpleasant, even devastating side effects, including gastrointestinal problems, intense mood swings, changes in hair and skin, and increased susceptibility to infection, they may also be the only treatment available for serious or life-threatening illnesses.

When the world-renowned flutist Eugenia Zuckerman was prescribed prednisone to combat a rare lung disease, she teamed up with her sister, Julie R. Ingelfinger, a well-known specialist in pediatric nephrology and hypertension at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, to write the first ever, comprehensive guide for patients undergoing this difficult treatment.

Packed with everything your doctor didn't have time to tell you, including recipes, exercises, and tips based on personal experience, Coping with Prednisone is an invaluable handbook for health-care workers, caregivers, and especially for patients themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for anyone on long term prednisone theraphy!
A heartfelt thank you to Eugenia Zukerman and Dr. Julie R. Ingelfinger. I read a review of your book "Coping with Prednisone" in the Sunday Parade magazine. Immediately ordered same from Amazon.Com. Ms. Zukerman is the FIRST person I have discovered who suffers from the same disease that I do: Eosinophilic pneumonia, (aka Pulmonary Infiltration with Eosinophilia, or P.I.E.) I was diagnosed in 1987 and in reading Ms. Zukermans account, it could have been me writing the story, almost line for line. I also suffered with the battle of understanding what the Prednisone was doing to me, physically and emotionally, while it was doing it's wonder job of making me better. I thought at times I was crazy, until I begged one of my doctors to get me some help.... "information about side effects of Prednisone". He copied several pages of information from the hospital library, (for doctors only), but at least I had something to compare to, even though it was written in medical terms. I have felt for years that if a patient is on long term Prednisone therapy, detailed explanations should be furnished to the patient, as the side effects of the drug are so varied and at times most devistating. I have been on Prednisone for 12 years. I have learned to live with the side effects, but at times it is extremely difficult. For me, it has become a "trade-off". The prednisone is keeping me alive, so I must accept what else it is doing to me as payment. I have been an M.S. patient for 28 years and in 1991 was diagnosed with S.L.E. (Lupus). However, the Eosinophilic pneumonia has been the most difficult and devistating disease of the three. Unfortunately in my case, the eosinophilic infiltrates only stay at bay when the dose is 5mg. or higher. 60mg. needed to control a major flair of the eosinophilia. I would appreciate very much if Amazon.Com would forward this letter to Ms. Zukerman's publishers and request that they send it along to her. It is very comforting to know that one other person has this rare malady and has experienced many of the same things that I have. I wish I had had this book to read in 1987. It would have made coping with prednisone so much easier!

5-0 out of 5 stars I thought I was alone in my Prednisone Side Efeects
I was looking for a book to help explain the side effects from the prednisone, that I've been on for the last 14 year's due to asthma that I have had my entire life. None of the doctor's were willing to give up the answer for some unknow reason. When I started read this wonderful book I said to myself, Oh My God, someone actually wrote a book on everything I was wondering about. The more I kept reading the more I understood how to deal with this awful but life saving drug. I wish I could say thank you to Eugenia and Julie in person. I belong to two asthma chat groups online through the internet. I have recommended this book to everyone. And mostly everyone has baught the book. Although I may never be able to get off steroids, as I've been told by my doctor's at least I have a better understanding about Prednisone. I recommend this book to everyone with asthma and other illnesses that require prednisone. It's the best book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must Read
I have ITP....a blood platelet disorder and am on steroids. Steroids do many strange things to the body. This book was an unbelieveable mirror of my side effects on and coming off Prednisone. I found myself talking to the book saying right on, you got it, and thank you for acknowledging my pains.
I can't speak for everyone, because everyone experiences different things with this steroid, but, I can tell you that the information will not hurt you and most of all the message that all this is temporary and can be beaten with some coping skills will make live on Prednisone far better. I've read chapters of this book 4 times to keep reminded of my plight...I am a chronic ITP patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Prednisone
My husband was put on massive doses of prednisone without being told what side effects or consequences the drug would bring. The doctors who prescribed the medicine didn't even know what to expect. My husband had horrible side effects. Finding this book was a life saver for it verified and explained every symptom my husband experienced. We no longer felt alone, someone else knew and described what he was and would be going through. We are thankful this book was written for it gave us laymen knowledge of this horrific/wonder drug, and how we should handle the side effects. Needless to say we immediately sent a copy to his doctor as well. If you are on even the smallest doses of pred. this book is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars For long term pred users, this book is a MUST
I was diagnosed with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura this past year, and am going through my second round with pred. This book is a must have for those of us faced with daily doses of this drug, and who face months, if not years, on it at a time. When I first was placed on .5mg/pound daily, I thought I was losing my mind. Nope, it was just the pred. Thank gosh for this book, I thought I was going to have to be committed to a nut hut. Not only does this book tell you the "NORMAL" side effects, it tells you how to deal with the side effects, and if a side effect is hard to deal with (like insomnia) the author tells you the best times to take your pred, and other hints to help gear the pred around your life. NOT having the pred dosage run your life.

This is also a book to have for the family of pred users, I am going to have my husband read it next, because it gives an accurate description of what one person feels on pred, it can help others who are close to the pred user also. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I have no reservation to recommend this book
Like its highly successful predecessor, the Third Edition of Handbook of Dialysis effectively integrates all the essential and clinically relevant information in the dialysis therapy. It is written by the leaders in this field and the layout is in an easy-to-read format. It is easy to locate what you need, whether you are reading for first-time knowledge, for review, or for support during an emergency. I have no reservation to recommend this book for all readers who are interested in dialysis therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars best dialysis book
this is a rich review of the art of hemodialysis, written by one of the leaders in the field. it is easy to understand and it covers all the aspects of the dialysis. it is a must have book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Any Dialysis Patient
"The Handbook of Dialysis" is a must have for anyone who is a patient on dialysis or who is the caretaker of someone on dialysis. This book is written with a Nephrologist or Nephrology nurse in mind, but patients and caretakers can learn a great deal as well. It explains the whole dialysis process including reuse, vascular accesses, anticoagulation, nutrition, infections, sleep disorder, etc. The dialysis process affects one's whole system.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any nephrologist in training
This is about the best handbook there is in the field of dialysis. It somehow manages to marry the conciseness and practicality of a handbook that can be carried around in your whitecoat and at the sametime, contains enough information that is usually only found in huge reference texts. Not only does it contain management guidelines in easy to read tables and point form, but also contains a lot more information regarding the basic physiology and scientific evidence if you care to read the appropriate sections. The downside to this is that it appears less readable when you compare it to its main "competitor", the oxford handbook series, but there again, they serve very different needs. For the non-specialist who needs a three second reference, especially someone who works in Britain, I would get the oxford handbook. If you are a nephrologist/dialysis nurse in training, you will inevitably go back to the handbook of dialysis, sooner or later.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
The book is a great assistance for my profesional work, in order to remind some concepts in fast way. Plenty of examples and practice problems. The cost is equitable.
I recomend this great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars valuable reference
I used an earlier edition of this book 15 years ago in pharmacy school. This is the only text book that I'm glad I kept. It covers the basics from metric/apothecary conversions to calculation of isotonicity for eye drops. This text is well organized with plenty of examples and problems with answer key. I use this book as the basis of my calculation portion of my pharmacy technician training program and nursing math refresher. If you keep only one book from pharmacy school, keep this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
We used this in our pharmaceutical calculations course in school and it was a great supplement throughout the year while taking the dispensing lab series. Great examples and excellent explanations throughout. This book covered all aspects of the field's math.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an important book for the pharmacist

Book Description

The Handbook of Biodegradable Polymers provides a source manual for the synthetic procedures, properties, and applications of bioerodible polymers. Descriptions of widely available materials such as polylactides, collagen, and gelatin are included, as well as polymers of emerging importance such as the genetically engineered and elastin based polymers which are as yet either proprietary and/or in early stages of development.
Divided into three sections, each chapter focuses on one type of polymer, providing a concise and comprehensive review on the synthetic methods, properties, biodegradation, biocompatibility and applications. Many chapters are written by experts from the industry, providing a practical viewpoint compared to many existing books in the field. The first section deals with synthetic absorbable polymers, section two addresses natural, semi-synthetic and biosynthetic polymers, with the final section covering the surface characterization of degradable polymers, modelling of biode

5-0 out of 5 stars If you take medications, you need this book!
Doctors can't keep track of every detail about every medication. So, it's essential that patients read about meds before taking them. Sometimes, however, the information just doesn't make sense to us. This book, helps it make sense. It's well organized. The information is great, and the style incorporates humor to make important points.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Pharmacology A Lot More Enjoyable.
I love this book. It breaks down pharmacologic drugs by system (ie. drugs used on the GI system, abx, etc.) and explains them in very simple terms while still being entertaining. This book is a must have for all nursing students. Sure does make pharmacology a lot easier to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best way to brush up on your pharmacology!!!!!!
I love this book. It breaks down pharmacologic drugs by system (ie. drugs used on the GI system, abx, etc.) and explains them in very simple terms while still being entertaining. This book does not read like a text book. However, at the end of each chapter, there is a little 3-7 question quiz. The only down side about this book is that it does not give the common names of drugs (ie. Colace is referred to as ducosate sodium). This book has really helped me in clinical and my practice NCLEX scores have dramatically improved. This book is a must own for nursing students, new grad nurses, or anyone who needs brushing up on pharmacology. ... Read more

Book Description

The pharmaceutical applications of powder technology have long been recognized. Yet while many books focus on aspects of powder formation and behavior, there has been no text that explores the power of particulate science in the design, manufacture, and control of quality medicines. Until now. A Guide to Pharmaceutical Particulate Science discusses key principles of particulate science and their practical applications. The authors cover particulate material, its form and production, sampling from bodies of powder, particle size descriptors and statistics, behavior of particles, instrumental analysis, particle size measurement and synergy of adopted techniques, physical behavior of a powder, and in vitro and in vivo performance criteria. They draw the components of particulate science into a single concise description of their current and potential uses in product development. Exploring the growth in knowledge of particle properties and the variety of technological advances in particle manufacture, A Guide to Pharmaceutical Particulate Science gives readers the tools they need to grasp the science and its use in the industry. ...
