5-0 out of 5 stars Dosage Calculations Made Incredibly Easy
This book truly does make learning how to calculate drug dosages very easy. It takes each step of each type of problem and explains in understandable terms how to set up the calculation and how to solve it. The book is filled with sample calculations and problems for the reader to solve. At the same time that it is a learning tool, it is easy to read and entertaining. It covers all types of calculations even dimensional analysis, explains drug labels, and helps the nurse avoid making drug calculation errors. Great book!

1-0 out of 5 stars A little to simple

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Clear and comprehencive
One of the best Pharmacology book, it does not get into the chemistry of the drugs etc but a very extensive source to read for first time pharmacology exposure. A lot of things that is normally covered in Physiology books are recalled here. Author also provides extensive links between different applications and explanations. Certainly book is written mainly for Nurses but from simple reading and explanations point of view it is very useful for everybody as a reference book.
I enjoyed reading every line of it. authors do not spare on any information to make it clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars extremely well written, helpful textbook
I have to say that this is one of the best text books I've ever had to buy! It's well written, well organized, and thoughtfully prepared. The author presents what might otherwise be very confusing and complicated ideas, and makes them straightforward and easy to understand. Best of all, I actually ENJOY reading this text. Yes, that's right, I enjoy reading about pharmacology! By making the concepts understandable, he makes the whole topic of drugs and their affects on the body interesting. What could be better than that?

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent foundation text
While the material is highly technical, it is presented in a clear, concise manner with excellent end of chapter summaries.
Substantial amounts of background information are presented to ensure a thorough understanding of the physiology of some body systems in order to permit a better understanding of how some medications work. Minimal molecular biology is included. Personally, I liked this text and will be keeping my copy for years to come.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it
I did not like this book because the answers are not available and my teacher is lazy and probably wouldn't give us the answers if we asked. I think it was a waste of money and good trees. I think this belongs in the trash along with all the other study guide books I have bought. On a side note, the main textbook is too big and heavy and I hate carrying it around. I think the type should be bigger or get rid of some of the content because when you are reading late at night it all runs together. I think that's enough ranting and raving so I will leave it at this my book is going to be out the window July 29 the day of my final. Good riddance!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
The new 4th edition of this book just keeps getting better and has a great chapter on alternative drugs added for this edition. The authors strive to make the information understandable and meaningful. This book is actually good reading for student nurses through advance practice nurses. The new study guide is also an improvement along with the web enhanced materials. The science is first rate and the material makes sense. Priorities are defined for drugs using the prototype format which enhances learning of the really important material. ... Read more

I'm a Senior nursing student and this book is WONDERFUL!!! Although we learn a lot in nursing school, IV therapy is one thing that we all seem to have to learn "on the job". Book Description

A single source for accurate scientific information on herbal remedies!

The Handbook of Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies is the reference tool you need to distinguish those herbal products that have been clinically tested from those for which there is little or no real evidence that substantiates or disputes their claims of efficacy. This essential volume provides a snapshot of 160 herbal products that have been tested in clinical trials. Details of the products and the clinical trials they underwent are here in an easy-to-read, at-a-glance format.

Each botanical profile in The Handbook of Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies contains a summary section (table, text and references), followed by product information and clinical trials for that particular product. An evaluation of the strength of the evidence from the trials, along with the context for therapeutics is included to give you a complete picture of each remedy and its usefulness or lack thereof. If there is more than one product based on a particular botanical then the trials are grouped according to the product.

This valuable book also makes purchasing easy with manufacturer contact information. With over 30 individual botanicals and 10 multi-ingredient formulas, 160 products and 360 clinical studies, The Handbook of Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies is the book you need to make an informed selection of herbal products. Not only does it list proprietary herbal products that have been tested in controlled clinical studies and provide a rating of the quality of those trials, but, it also describes the fundamentals of herbal medicine, including regulation, characterization, standardization, bioavailability, efficacy, safety, pharmacopoeial monographs as well as incentives, or lack of incentive, for US and European manufacturers to conduct clinical studies.

Contributors to the chapters describing the fundamentals of herbal medicine include:

the late Dr. Varro Tyler, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Purdue University and co-author of Tyler’s Honest Herbal, Rational Phytotherapy, and Tyler’s Herbs of Choice
Loren Israelsen, JD, president of the LDI group
Tieraona Low Dog, MD, Chair of the USP Dietary Supplement Information Committee
Joerg Grünwald, PhD, co-author of the Physicians Desk Reference (PDR) for Herbal Medicines, and Stefan Spiess, RPh, President of Grünwalder GmbH
Anton Biber, PhD, and Friedrich Lang, PhD, experts in the bioavailability of herbal medicine at Dr. Willmar Schwabe GmbH & Co., Germany
Anthony Almada, MSc, founder and Chief Scientific Officer of IMAGINutrition, Inc.
Joseph M. Betz, PhD, Director of the Dietary Supplements Methods and Reference Materials Program at the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements
Ezra Bejar, PhD, president of Plant Bioassay
Uwe Koetter, PhD, Director of New OTC and Dietary Supplement Product Development at GlaxoSmithKline
Srini Srinivasan, PhD, Vice President of the Dietary Supplement Verification Program of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP)
Roy Upton, Executive Director of the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia.

All of the clinical trials in The Handbook of Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies were rated as to their Level of Evidence according to a system designed by Tieraona Low Dog, MD, Chair of the United States Pharmacopoeia Dietary Supplements/Botanicals Expert Panel and a member of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for Nurse Practitioner Prescribers
The book is a little pricey but well worth the investment. It really covers everything you need to prescribe safely and effectively. It also reviews drugs by body system, age category, gender and multidrug therapy. This book allows you to get all your information in one place.
