5-0 out of 5 stars Great compatibility lists!
I leave my copy in our CCU. It's the best resource we have for IV med compatibilities -- boasting nice long lists for most of our commonly used drips. Solid dosing information, some tables, etc. My favorite for IV meds (ePocrates & Infusicalc/Palm user too).

4-0 out of 5 stars A good quick reference for many IV drugs!
I am new to Critical Care and wanted a book to help with the new IV drugs I would see especially. This book is a great addition to a general drug book. I includes more IV information than a general drug book. A few of the dosage recommendations are different than what my facility uses which is a little confusing. But overall, I use this book most days!

5-0 out of 5 stars Even with my Palm!!!
I use my palm all the time.. I love Epocrates for its ease of use. But for indepth info on drugs we use day and day it..it cannot be beat!!

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the most used IV drug book on our unit
This is the most used IV drug book on our unit. The drugs are listed alphabetically, therefore easy to find when you are in a hurry. The best feature is the compatability list for each drug. Some titratable meds have easy to read tables, and there are tables of drug effect onset, peak, halflife, etc. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good but not complete
You're only as good as your current information. While the Lippincott's Nursing Drug Guide 2004 has lots of useful information and is a compact, informative source for most drugs, it's missing many new drugs approved and on the market as of 2002. For example, Pimecrolimus (tradename Elidel) which is widely used by derms, peds and family practice doctors is nowhere to be found in the book either under its generic or brand name.

Some similar medications with the same mode of action but different absorption and pharmacokinetics are lumped together For example, Concerta, Ritalin LA, Ritalin, Ritalin SR are all lumped together under their generic name without discussing the effects of the different delivery systems and how that might impact patient side effects.

There's absolutely no mention of oral terbinafine which has been on the market for the last three years. Since oral anti-fungals can have differing coverage and drug interactions, it would be wise to be comprehensive in this particular category.

On the other hand, many of the IV medications are pretty up-to-date making this more of an indepensible guide for hospitals vs. office based practices. Certainly there are medications that might be sampled/written on the office level here as well; it just appears as if the information isn't as comprehensive as could be.

The book is well organzied with an index based around the class of medication as well as generic names. For those medications that are "branded" it might be a bit more difficult to find as there is no brand name guide. Since not all of us think of medications and their generic names, this might be a useful cross reference (particularly if the patient knows the brand name and not the generic as so often happens).

There's a very useful section based on the different types of medications that provides a thumbnail overview of the class and the typical side effects and effects seen with the class of medication. There's also a useful section that has illustrations of some of the common medications out there. Since patients frequently remember the color and shape of their pills but not always other details about the medication (beyond what they take it for), this is useful as well in determining what the patient might be taking.

This book is certainly more user friendly and easier to access than the PDR and is missing the complete PI for various medications verbatium. In a sense, this is an advantage as the guide provides a good, quick and targeted overview on each medication. It also allows nurses to sidestep the useful information that the FDA frequently requires drug manufacturers to put in their package insert.

On the whole, Karch's book is very good and an indepensible tool for nurses. Karch's book also overlooks a number of popular medications that were approved as soon as two years ago and tends to lump the medications together without distinguishing the differences between delivery systems and how that might impact the side effects patients feel. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best B-ball books
This book is Jerry west giving tips and stratagies for young and experienced players. West has tips for practicing stratagies for during the game and how basketball effects you off the court. I really like this book. Jerry West is one of the greatest plaers of all time, It's very nice of him to pass on his skills. West also writes about being a kid, listening to West Virginia Mountaineer games on his radio. My dad used to do this exact same thing. Jerry also acknowledges other players. He includes Wilt Chamberlain, Kreem-Abdul Jabbar, Pete Maravich, and a few others. I recommend this book to all basketball players who would like to take on the best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you take medications, you need this book!
Doctors can't keep track of every detail about every medication. So, it's essential that patients read about meds before taking them. Sometimes, however, the information just doesn't make sense to us. This book, helps it make sense. It's well organized. The information is great, and the style incorporates humor to make important points.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Pharmacology A Lot More Enjoyable.
I love this book. It breaks down pharmacologic drugs by system (ie. drugs used on the GI system, abx, etc.) and explains them in very simple terms while still being entertaining. This book is a must have for all nursing students. Sure does make pharmacology a lot easier to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best way to brush up on your pharmacology!!!!!!
I love this book. It breaks down pharmacologic drugs by system (ie. drugs used on the GI system, abx, etc.) and explains them in very simple terms while still being entertaining. This book does not read like a text book. However, at the end of each chapter, there is a little 3-7 question quiz. The only down side about this book is that it does not give the common names of drugs (ie. Colace is referred to as ducosate sodium). This book has really helped me in clinical and my practice NCLEX scores have dramatically improved. This book is a must own for nursing students, new grad nurses, or anyone who needs brushing up on pharmacology. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book, but with mistakes
As a new nursing student I have found this book very useful. There is a very comprehensive introduction which allows the student to relearn some of the math skills that may have been lost over the year. I also really like the fact that the book comes with a removable laminated card with conversions on it. I'm sure that this will come in quite handy when I begin my clinicals.
My only real complaint is that I have found a couple of mistakes in the fifth edition. I found at least two mistake in the answers provided for the chapter review on apothecaries' measurements. I would recommend that the publisher check their material a little better so as to prevent confusion for students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up For Maths for Nurses

5-0 out of 5 stars Psychopharmacological overview in practical format
In it's second edition, the book divides into two essential overviews that are very "user friendly". The first part profiles a general clinical psychopharmacology which provides a well written and comprehensible neuroanatomy review, which is basic to the understanding of how psychotropic drugs work. The mental disorders are discussed which these drugs are used to treat, along with ECT, abuse dynamics and interventions.

The second section provides a complete drug profile for more than 100 psychotropics. Included in each profile are facts that exceed most common nursing medication books. The drug index is all encompassing and has index resource to furthur promote a handy reference source. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful, important book. Highly recommend it.
This book is turning out to be a valuable tool for me in practice and teaching. I recommend it for students, teachers and health practitioners who want to use essential oils to enhance patient care. It is well-written, objective, practical and has extensive references, summary tables, appendices and index. As a physician, I appreciate its integrative approach. It is a good synthesis of history, chemistry, safety issues, experience, basic science, some of the most current clinical research, clinical applications and more. I especially liked the section on infection. In my opinion, it is an important work, which could well influence future research and clinical use of essential oils in the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource
This is a great book for any health professional wishing to enhance patient care with aromatherapy. As a nurse, I find it to be an outstanding resource full of scientifically based information related to essential oils and their uses. Dr Buckle has included an easy to use index to guide the reader to information on a variety of diseases and conditions which respond to aromatherapy intervention. This is a "must read" for anyone incorporating aromatherapy into a clinical or community setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice
Sick of all those superficial and almost identical books about aromatherapy?
If you are tired of aromatherapy recipe books and want some solid, research-backed (yes over 1,500 references!) information about how to REALLY help people with chronical pain, depression, Alzheimer's disease, pressure sores, insomnia, nasty infections, nausea or just to understand how essential oils work, don't hesitate to get this precious packed advice from former nurse and now PhD Jane Buckle. I have more than fifteen years of experience with essential oils but I found much useful news and lots of inspiration in this unique treasure box. The chemistry section is outstanding as is the section on side-effects or interactions with common drugs (in case you work with essential oils as recommended in some of the above mentioned books...)

3-0 out of 5 stars not as useful as others
I found this book to deal less with the practice of Clinical Aromatherapy than the politics of the use of essential oils clinically. I'm already convinced that the use of essential oils can be helpful in the healing of ourselves and others. I found the books by Kurt Schnaubelt to be more useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book
There are those who will see this book as a 2nd editon to Jane's first book, 'Clinical Aromatherapy in Nursing' but to suggest such a link would be similar to saying that Concorde was just a step up from the Wright Brothers.

This book meets the needs of health professionals and educators, as well as being a vital tool for those who work with essential oils. It is an important contribution to the creation of healthcare packages that embrace the very best of orthodox and complementary medicine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I disagee with the Advanced degree Snob
The purpose of this series is not to TEACH. It provides a testing tool; practice questions for exam or NCLEX prep. If you want to learn about calcium channel blockers, read your textbook or turn to one of Lippincotts other books. I also recommend Lippincott's Clinical Pharmacology Made Incredibly Easy book. The text my prof used in my pharm class was very poor. But I read it anyway. Then, when I was beginning my prep for each exam, I would read through the Made Incredibly Easy chapters in the drug classes specific to what my exam would cover. Then I would use the software to practice. I found this very helpful with probably THE hardest class a nursing student has to slog through.

2-0 out of 5 stars Another poor quality CD-ROM in a Poor Series...
The title of this series should be called, "Incredibly Stupid for the Incredibly Simple!" There is no real organized learning here. You pick from several categories and then immediately proceed to a quiz. You can choose the number of questions in the quiz, but then that is it. You are given the correct answer, along with a one paragraph explanation. All this CD-ROM contains is a few childish, and poorly designed animation, and a bunch of questions and answers. There is no organized learning....such as effects of Ca++ channel blockers, Beta-Adrenergic receptor blockers, Nitrates, etc... Again, all this CD-ROM contains are some unrelated questions and some short explanations. Unless you get this for under $10, save your $$$.

There are several better Pharmacology Books, such as Lippincott's Illustrated Review! I have my advanced degree and will tell you that if you want to learn, you need to spend the time and effort to do it right. There are NO EASY and QUICK ways to learn. This only appeals to the lazy, and gives nursing a poor reputation. Spend the time and learn it right!

1-0 out of 5 stars I usually like Delmar products, but I don't like this book.
I own most of the drug handbooks on the market, including this one. It is a required book for a course I am taking, and I don't like using it. In my opinion, the format is not user friendly. Many times, when I look up a drug in this book, I am forced to look further into the drug classification section at the front of the book to get basic information. So it is a hassle to use. I also think that most other handbooks, particularly Davis's Drug Guide, explains things (like the action of a drug for example) in terms that are easier to grasp. Who has time to weed through a lot of verbal fog when you are in a hurry. In addition to being a nurse, I am also a book lover, and this is not one that I love. ... Read more
