Completely revised critical thinking questions in each chapter to actively engage students and challenge their reasoning skills.

New and updated artwork to illustrate the most current scientific knowledge.

Additional analogies. This feature, called "The Big Picture," explains the interactions of the system discussed in a particular chapter with the body as a whole. They are Kevin Patton's hallmark and help to make the material more understandable.

New interactive CD-ROM included free with each textbook (college version only).

Expanded and enhanced MERLIN web site (college version only).

We are unable to add the MERLIN logo throughout the book, because the Anthony's (high school) version will not have a MERLIN web site. However, we will link the CD to the MERLIN web site, for added value.

Open book tests will be provided for instructors' use, to encourage sell through. The tests will be provided in the IER or on the MERLIN site, depending upon the technology that is available when the 5e publishes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best critical care drug reference
In today's fast-paced health care setting, practitioner rarely has sufficient time to sit down and leisurely browse through the mirriad of pages in hopes of finding that one specific piece of information that he or she may need. Unfortunately, this is exacly what 99% of drug reference manuals available on the market today offer. On the contrary, this particular reference provides any health care provider in a critical care setting with an instant access to those bits of information about a particular intravenous drug that are so vital. Cross-compatibility is one of them. Within seconds, you are able to easily compare compatibility of a given medication with the rest of the drips already running into your patient. I have never seen a drug reference so concise, so "just what I'm looking for", so specific to the critical care setting!

5-0 out of 5 stars Book is a MUST for critical care and emergency practitioners
This book is a must for healthcare professionals in the critical care and/or emergency units of hospitals. It contains individual monographs of approximately 100 frequently prescribed injectable medications used in critical care settings. In addition to frequently prescribed medications, the book also contains information on medications only found in critical care settings, such as hydrochloric acid infusions.

Each monograph contains practical information used by practitioners on a day-to-day basis. Dosing guidelines have hints for making rapid dosing decisions and the "tricks" of dosing conversions between different dosage formulations. A unique feature of each monograph is the Monitor section, which contains the common parameters that should be used to determine efficacy and safety of the medication. Practical guidelines for therapeutic drug monitoring are also included when appropriate, such as the timing for drawing serum levels and interpretation of the serum concentration value. Compatibility with other drugs is also listed. However, this reference only addresses Y-site compatibility issues since this is the most common compatibility information required by critical care practitioners. This pocket reference contains precisely the usable information essential for critical care practitioners. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better choices
I am a nursing student currently using this book for pharmacology in Med-Surg I. After having worked through 7 chapters, I am not fond of this book. The authors have set it up in alomost a circular manner so that you are searching all over for the information you need. Some of the informatrion is too simple and doesn't help create a good understanding of the material. There are no pictures of cell membranes or flow charts for drug action that would help reinforce the learning that is supposed to be taking place! It's simply tedious reading that takes way too much effort to get the most out of it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Manual of IV Therapeutics as used for an IV class
I found Phillips' Manual of I.V. Therapeutics to be laid out well for individual learning and classroom formats. The information is up to date and the pre- and post-tests are a great way for the student to test their knowledge and understanding. I did find a few typos and a few statements that did not go exactly with the newest INS standards but Phllips does say to go according to facility policy which does not always agree exactly with INS either. I found two pre-tests where the answer to one question at the end of the chapters did not agree with what was said in the actual chapter information. Since I agree with her information I must assume the answer given at the back of the chapter was a typo. This occurred in the pre-test for chapter 4 and chapter 10. Phillips also talked about using Urokinase which has been recalled. For these reasons I did not give this book five stars but still feel it is best in format and over all information of any book I have found for use in my LPN IV Certification class. Thank you Ms.Phillips. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars nurse practitioner drug handbook
So far, I have looked up about 6 drugs and a handful of diseases - none of them appeared in the book. I am very disappointed, and have put the book aside for reference at home. Again, when I pick it up at home it often doesn't have the drug I'm looking for. I would not bring it to work because I cannot afford to not be able to find the information I need at work. At work I use Tarascon, where drugs are divided neatly into classes, and Nursing 2000 drug handbook for Pt. teaching needs.

Great book that allows the ARNP to prescribe medications with confidence. More advanced than nursing drug books and very helpful for anyone in family practice. I plan to upgrade with any new additions. ... Read more
