Book Description

Authored by an acknowledged expert on muscle and movement imbalances, this well-illustrated book presents a classification system of mechanical pain syndrome that is designed to direct the exercise prescription and the correction of faulty movement patterns. The diagnostic categories, associated muscle and movement imbalances, recommendations for treatment, examination, exercise principles, specific corrective exercises, and modification of functional activities for case management are described in detail. This book is designed to give practitioners an organized and structured method of analyzing the mechanical cause of movement impairment syndrome, the contributing factors and a strategy for management. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Precision movement matters!
Having harrassed the author for close to four years I am pleased to say that this text represents what might best described an a "hinge in history". I agree that the concepts and examination items might be challenging for those used to a "cookbook" strategy but I am sure Shirley will agree that she did NOT invent anatomy or kinesiology! Systematic clinical examination, identifying movement deviations from mechanical precision and optimising efficient movement patterns are not large leaps of logic. Major car manufacturers and airlines have been doing this for years; analyse patterns of wear and tear on components and see what lasts the longest! However, humans in their comfortable/familiar patterns don't invest in the valid and rational practice of prevention and damage analysis. I know UK colleagues will take the path of least resistance when trying out the exam items within this book and say "Well it doesn't predict chronicity!" or "What about psychosocial factors?". To them and the pain biology fanatics I say this...when viruses, bacteria, trauma, genetics and family relationships have been analysed, what are the three primary drivers of nociception? Bogduk delineated the mechanical deformation model of nociception; Sahrmann has now thrown down the gauntlet with the movement paradigm to support or negate. Roll up your sleeves, break a sweat and join those of us liberated from surreal Southern Hemisphere skeleton pushing. Active rehabilitation with empiricism, determinism and a healthy cynicism! This text gives content and not just theory/process models - try telling a student that clinical reasoning is a valid model when they don't know what to look for!

5-0 out of 5 stars Long awaited text for expert practice
Physical therapists like myself have been waiting for a text from the author for over 10 years. Definitely a text for someone well versed in the anatomy and mechaincs of the musculoskeletal system. This text is written in clear categories and deals with problems in three general areas. It takes effort and analytic thinking to understand the myriad of motions listed in the text. A CD with actual demonstrations would help immensely in seeing all the factors the author is illustrating. The introduction covers very complex ideas made as simple as possible by the author. I would recommend this text for any movement specialist but I would caveat my recommendation with the warning that hard work is needed to really grasp the techniques listed in this text. This author is saying things that need to be learned by movement specialists and only can be applied by an expert. ... Read more

Book Description

A powerful new program for preventing the diseases of aging--based on cutting edge research

In recent stories, both the New York Times and CNN reported on the vital link between inflammation and the risk of heart disease, as well as diseases associated with aging including arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, frailty, osteoporosis, and some cancers. The Inflammation Cure is on the cutting edge of this research, exposing this connection and showing readers how to protect themselves.

In accessible language, Dr. William Meggs, an originator of the inflammation-related theory of neurogenic switching, explains the research and outlines a practical and complete program for controlling inflammation and returning to vibrant good health.

The Inflammation Cure:

  • Explains up-to-the-minute thinking on the role inflammation plays in aging and health
  • Reveals what causes inflammation and how you can tell if you have it
  • Presents a comprehensive program to reduce inflammation and promote wellness
  • Provides information on anti-inflammatory foods and supplements, medications, exercise, and more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Read, Informative, Worth Keeping on Your Bookshelf
The Inflammation Cure by Meggs and Svec, and The Inflammation Syndrome by Challem, both appeared in 2003 and both discuss the role of inflammation in the major diseases of our time, and the things that one can do to limit the risk of diseases related to inflammation. Both books are easy to read. Which to choose? According to the prestigious Library Journal, "While Jack Challem's The Inflammation Syndrome covers similar ground [to the Inflammation Cure], his approach leans toward the faddish and sensationalist, while Meggs takes a more levelheaded approach, weaving the latest research on various diseases into a broad picture." The thing I most prefer about Meggs' book is that it takes a comprehensive approach (including diet) to the things that affect inflammation, rather than spending the whole book just discussing the role of diet as is done in Challem's book. Challem is a health reporter who writes and publishes The Nutrition Reporter newsletter; it is natural that he would stress diet and its consequences. But diseases are caused and controlled by much more than our diet. Meggs is a practicing physician who has a great deal of clinical experience with all aspects of inflammation, and who has woven many real-life cases into the book as illustrations. So, which book should you buy? I have little doubt that you will find The Inflammation Cure by Meggs and Svec more informative and much more useful as a reference on your shelf.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only so-so
This book is "all right"...but I much prefer "The Inflammation Syndrome, by Jack Challem, which came out first. Both books cover much the same material, but I think The Inflammation Syndrome does a better job of connecting the dots between dietary imbalances (caused by eating too many junk foods) and inflammation. It also recommends a very clear anti-inflammation diet plan, with easy to follow guidelines and recipes, as well as a number of well-documented anti-inflammatory supplements, such as the omega-3 fish oils, gamma-linolenic acid, antioxidant vitamins, and B vitamins. In addition to describing the big picture of inflammation, The Inflammation Syndrome also focuses on the top 20 or so inflammatory diseases, including heart disease, cancer, and arthritis, as well as inflammatory athletic injuries -- each with specific recommendations for eating habits and supplements. At the very least, you might consider getting both books and synthesizing their advice to suit your needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important book on inflammation and health
"The Inflammation Cure", by Dr. William Meggs, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chief of Toxicology at the School of Medicine of East Carolina University, with Carol Svec, an award-winning health writer. Dr. Meggs is a physician and has conducted research related to the study of inflammation.

As a medical doctor, I had long understood that inflammation is a key component of the body's defense system - when appropriately activated, inflammation is meant to protect and repair the body after insult or injury. Too little inflammation can lower the immune function and result in disease, whereas too much inflammation can result in and contribute to certain specific diseases.

But in this fascinating, easy-to-understand synthesis of cutting-edge medical research, the authors show how recent medical science is revealing an "inflammation connection" in many of today's common diseases and conditions - cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, asthma, obesity, allergies, fatigue, and others, even aging. They pull together the latest research across medical specialties, and in lay language, explain the functions of inflammation, its scientific basis, and the problems that can arise when there is uncontrolled (severe or long-term) inflammation. Selected scientific references are provided for each chapter.

Most important, the authors give simple lifestyle steps aimed at helping to lower the inflammation risk, reduce hidden sources of inappropriate inflammation, and help the body keep inflammation and anti-inflammation in proper balance. There are informative and lively chapters on dietary measures, lifestyle, mind-body connection, medications and medical tests.

I strongly recommend this timely, easy-to-read book for both lay and medically-trained readers. I believe it is a valuable resource for understanding recent scientific information on inflammation, and in helping make healthy, positive choices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible, informative book on vital subject
Dr. Meggs is professor and chief of the division of toxicology at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. He has been instrumental in the development of the theory of neurogenic switching, which is related to the study of inflammation. As such, he is definitely an expert on the subject of this book.

Dr. Meggs states that a growing body of medical research points to the process of inflammation in the body as a primary contributor to (if not an actual cause of) the major killer diseases: heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer (in particular, colon, stomach, esophageal, lung, breast and ovarian cancer). Inflammation is also implicated in chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, obesity and sleep disorders. It plays a major part in the bodily degeneration of aging, especially Alzheimer's and osteoporosis, and it is strongly implicated in the progression of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, asthma, dermatitis, lupus, and scleroderma.

Dr. Meggs provides clear, easily understood explanations of what inflammation is, how we get it, and how to avoid it. He also offers an inflammation quiz to allow you to self-screen for inflammation. His writing (and that of his co-author Carol Svec, an award-winning health writer) is accessible throughout the book, and the flow from subject to subject is so smooth, it invites the reader to study every word. In addition, the book contains a detailed table of contents, an index, and 21 pages of references for those who wish to pursue this subject further.

I found it extremely helpful that after making an extensive, well-documented case for the ravages of inflammation in the body, Dr. Meggs proceeded to list, in a non-overwhelming fashion, lifestyle changes that anyone can make which will lessen the personal health impact of inflammation. He also includes important information on non-prescription and prescription anti-inflammatory medications.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about inflammation. It is written in such a straightforward fashion that the lay public will have no trouble understanding it, and the information in it is so crucial and up-to-date, many healthcare professionals could benefit from reading it as well.

I was particularly interested in this book on a personal level, because within my immediate and extended family, all of the following diseases indicated by Dr. Meggs to be implicated in inflammation exist (and in some cases, abound): heart disease, stroke, diabetes, various cancers, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, obesity, sleep disorders, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and dermatitis. I plan to immediately implement many of this book's practical suggestions and discuss with my doctor at my upcoming annual physical what it has taught me about inflammation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and helpful book
This is a good book. It's an easy read and the author clearly understands the connection between inflammation and lifestyle choices. His advice is interesting and helpful.

I agree with the reviewer below; this book is broad-based and really doesn't address specific inflammatory issues. The point of the book is to recognize how pervasive inflammation is among various health issues and to learn to make beneficial changes in our lives.

My one criticism is: the author states, "There is no need to take supplements for vitamins B6 or B12". I absolutely disagree. As many vegetarians (especially vegans) have learned the hard way, sometimes vitamin B12 supplements are essential. The author recommends a vegetarian diet, yet apparently doesn't recognize that one of the most common risks of a vegetarian diet is insufficient vitamin B12 intake. The author is potentially putting people at risk by not recognizing the possible need for vitamin B12 supplements (totally supported by research on vegetarians and vegetarian diets). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text
Charles Ciccone who wrote this text was my teacher in physical therapy school at Ithaca College. Throughout college, everyone knew that if the class was taught by him we would all have an easy time understanding all of the concepts. He was a great teacher who really knew how to explain even the more difficult topics and pharmacology was no exception. This textbook was extrememly useful as it not only explains what types of drugs have specific effects on the body and it's systems, but it is particularly detailed in describing the impact that the drugs may have on rehab. Even in class, this was one aspect that he reinforced. He explained that the reason for talking about certain classes of drugs and then giving a few examples is because the drug world is always changing and so are the names. This way he has provided a wealth of knowledge and in a very easy to understand manner.

I have been out of school for about 3 years and I still occassionally refer to this book when encountering some classes of drugs and this is a great reference to have. I would highly recommend this text to anyone, that is especially if you can't be in one of his classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive pharmacology text for all rehab professionals.
Pharmacology in Rehabilitation by C.D. Ciccone is an all inclusive text and post-graduate reference on drugs, pharmakokinetics, action/side effects/interactions. Of paramount interest and use is the section within each class of drugs entitled "special considerations in rehabilitation."

Section I is a self contained unit in pharmacokinetics with enough detail for any non-prescribing rehab professional. I am sure prescribing clinicians would also find these explanations clear and helpful in deciphering the more involved pharmacology texts.

Section II: CNS, deals with not only the pharmacology but offers an excellent review of the CNS organization and neurotransmitters. I very much enjoyed the section explaining the blood-brain barrier which is clear and removes all mystery. The clinical case studies offered for each specific class of drugs are very realistic and offer a fine teaching tool for the case based academician.

Every section not only teach! ! es the pharmacology involved but reviews all normal and abnormal physiology content involved. Sections cover pain medications, antibiotics, cardiopulmonary classes including antihypertensives, endocrinology and oncology.

This reference text is far more extensive than is reflected in this brief review.

I highly recommend this text as a stand alone text in the classroom and as a post-graduate reference for the clinician's bookshelf. A copy alongside of the PDR in the clinic would be a well used reference. ... Read more

Book Description

Using the clinical model of the whiplash syndrome, this groundbreaking book describes the alterations in brain chemistry and function induced in individuals by what is known as traumatic stress or traumatization-experiencing a life-threatening event while in a state of helplessness. The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease presents evidence of the resulting and relatively permanent alteration in neurophysiology, neurochemistry, and neuronal organization-changes correlated with many of the most common, yet poorly understood, physical complaints and diseases, including whiplash, migraines, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and other painful, difficult-to-treat conditions.

short blurb for Whiplash catalogs: "Why does my neck still ache so much? The accident was months ago. My doctor thinks I'm crazy or lazy or faking it. What's wrong with me?"

What's wrong, according to The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease, is that physical traumas and emotional traumas are powerfully interrelated. After decades of research into brain chemistry, Dr. Scaer has identified some of the ways that the helplessness and terror of sudden trauma induce changes in brain function and the resulting consequences these measurable chemical changes can have on muscles, digestion, blood pressure, and many other bodily systems. Using the clinical model of the whiplash syndrome, this electrifying book offers new hope to anyone suffering from whiplash, post-traumatic stress disorder, or a history of abuse. It even provides ways to cope with new traumas to minimize the emotional and physical damage! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful insight
What insight! I also highly recommend reading Peaceful Heart: A Woman's Journey of Healing, by Aimee Jo Martin....a book that is a true testament to the human spirit and takes the reader thru a client's perspective of getting thru PTSD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I purchased this book (along with a few others on the subject) initially because I was interested in the topic.
Not a medical person or psychiatrist of any sort, I just thought it was something that I would enjoy looking into. For those that know how the subconscious works, you'll appreciate the fact that I discovered that I was a victim of PTSD while delving into the subject.

It was as if the universe was trying to tell me something. All I can say is that it opened my eyes and changed my life in ways I never knew possible.

For those interested in fiction dealing with a topic along these lines (and also Dissociative Identity Disorder) I would recommend reading a book called "Bark of the Dogwood" by Jackson McCrae. It's an intricate study of PTSD, child abuse, dysfunction, and a little of everything else, and packs quite a wallop. And it's actually quite funny in places--probably the ONLY book I know of about child abuse that has a bright side.

5-0 out of 5 stars Explains PTSD Like Nothing Else
Here finally is the neurological basis for the weirdly persistent, highly distressing, ever-cycling symptoms of posttraumatic stress. Don't let the medical terminology stop you from reading this book. It's a stunning revelation to see how physiologically based this syndrome really is, rooted as it is in the survival imperative of the freeze response and it's cognitive partner, dissociation. Makes those diagnostic categories which most of us therapists got trained on pretty irrelevant! I leaned heavily on the fabulous info in this book to write my own chapter on the physiology of PTSD. It's a must read for people with PTSD, their family, friends and counselors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A little goldmine
I teach massage therapy here in Australia. Often, students will ask about books they should buy in order to become better therapists, and this is one that I always happily recommend. The techniques are well explained and relatively easy to apply. What's more they are safe, as well as beautifully effective. Anyone interested in improving their results with bodywork should have a look at this (and most of Chaitow's work, as far as I am concerned!).

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
This is the best book I've come across for introducing a novice to the concepts and practice of MET. Chaitow's other books tend to go into very minute detail about the nervous system component of these techniques. This book is very well ordered and the assessments and techniques don't get lost in the minutae. HIs very clear presentation of the far-reaching effects of dysfunction in one part of the body is excellent. If you are interested in these techniques, this is the book! You can then follow up with his other books on the subject, especially Soft Tissue Manipulations. I'm using this book in a medical massage program in which I am an instructor. ... Read more

James Oschman has done it, he's presenting us with the rare gift of a breakthrough understanding of the human condition that includes a profound new theory of the mechanisms of life, one with critically important clinical implications. In prose that reads like a good adventure story he presents with great clarity, comprehensiveness, and extensive endnotes a mind-boggling story from the frontiers of biophysics. Reading merely the introduction to this immensely important book will open your mind to a radically different paradigm of human functioning, one that is laying the foundation for more fully understanding all kinds of phenomena of living processes that heretofore have remained insoluble mysteries.

He discusses the nature of scientific revolution and how once shunned and ignored ideas move into the mainstream of orthodoxy only to be replaced in turn. It is time for some of the most fundamental assumptions of medical and life sciences to be examined, time for these new ideas to be tested.

Dr. Oschman cites voluminous evidence from scientific journals demonstrating that along with the communication systems we are most familiar with, the nervous and endocrine systems, there are other communication and regulatory systems that can only be understood when we look deeper into ourselves than the realms of organs and cells and even molecules with all of their complex iterations and interactions. We must go into the quantum realm of subatomic particles if we would understand the nature of life.

Biophysicists have been doing this in their labs and specialized journals but their discoveries have had little effect outside their field. What Jim has so ably accomplished that no one else has done and which is so vitally important is to carefully scrutinize this burgeoning material with the eyes of a comprehensivist and synthesize it into a new paradigm that sheds light on so many mysteries from the everyday questions of how living organisms regulate disparate functions, generate energy, et cetera. In doing so a number of fascinating questions arise in the mind of the scientifically literate that scream for investigation. So many questions that have resisted our best minds' efforts at understanding appear now ready to be answered, and give rise to the next layer of questions.

Life functions cannot be understood so long as the investigation holds to the familiar realms. We now have the tools and with Jim's contribution the theoretical framework to carry our investigation of life and especially human life into the next domain of quantum realities. The practical results, if this work is given the resources it needs, will surely be immensely important. Questions about the extraordinary and well-documented events that sometimes occur in activities like sports, the martial arts, and various healing modalities can now be investigated rationally - and perhaps someday if we do the work these now rare and inexplicable phenomena will be harnessed and reliably produced for the well-being of us all.

The evidence for this "second" nervous system, one that functions much more rapidly, is near infinitely more complex, and magnitudes of order more sensitive than the nervous system we are so familiar with is conclusive. And this system has been right in front of our eyes and under our hands all along, we just didn't have scientific tools with sufficient sensitivity to perceive and investigate it until recently. I urge everyone interested in these vital issues to get this book and spread the word.

In the 15 years since publication of the first edition, Steps to Follow has gained a worldwide reputation among professionals as a unique practical guide to the treatment of neurologically impaired patients.

This second, completely updated edition incorporates significant practical advances in early and later neurorehabilitation and in the understanding of the problems confronting both patients and those who work with them.

-More detailed explanation of hand function and more in-depth analysis of normal walking
-Revised chapters on the various therapeutic activities, including new ways to retrain selective movements and prevent or counteract increases in muscle tone
-Deeper understanding of abdominal muscle activity, which is relevant to retraining balance reactions and sitting and standing
-A new chapter demonstrating how David Butler's concept of the mobilization of neural structures throughout the body can be of inestimable value
-Examples of ways in which therapists, nurses and relatives can help to avoid the development of secondary complications such as pain and loss of range of motion or overcoming existing difficulties

John Noseworthy has selected the world's leading neurologists as section editors, and they in turn have chosen leaders from all the neurological subspecialties. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Knee Crisis Hanbook
I think this is a great starter book about the knee and injuries! The author has written the book so anybody can understand their knee problem! In fact, I was able to help friend at work understand her sprained LCL!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have any questions about knees, this is the book .
When I first heard about this book, I thought it would be another boring book written by a doctor. Most books written
by doctors are so far over your head you can't read without a
dictionary. No so with this one. I read this like a novel.
Everything was so real. The explanations were not pedantic,
like most doctor's books, but real easy to understand and follow. If you have concerns about knees, or if you have kids,
get this book and keep it near. I promise you will be using it
again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for athletes and other active people
I had a skiing accident last winter which left me with a bum knee. This is the first book that I have found that actually addressed all my needs. It extensively explained (in ways my doctor couldn't) how my problem should be dealt with and ways it could be treated. It looks like I'll be back on the slopes this winter.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have knees, read this book!
This book was so helpful. It gave me tips on how to pick a doctor and a physical therapist, showed me how different knee problems are diagnosed and even gave me excersises to do on my own according to the problem you are experiencing. ... Read more
