This book is excellent! It shows illustrated step by step instructions to complete each exercise. Great for rehab purposes or just toning up. There are about 190 pages of instruction. 5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for the practicing physician and student
Pretty good book though I was surprised about the author's comment about the late, great osteopath Larry Jones who actually developed positional release through strain/counterstrain.I remember Larry as being a friendly, helpful chap who was much more flexible regarding his techniques rather than the rigid clinician that the author describes. Regardless, the British Osteopath Chaitow goes into details of the various positional release techniques such as strain/counterstrain, functional release etc. which helps clarifies all the terminology. Chaitow also has a video which is a good acompaniment to the book. Kind of wish I had this for the boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's THE book !
On a very complete way, once more, Chaitow shows on Positional Release Techiniques important ways to restablish functional state of different structure, such as muscle spasm, enhacing circulation and more. A very fine book that will be usefull for many manual trehapists. If you have any doubt, don't wait more, acquire it ! ... Read more

Book Description

Unlock the emotional roadblocks that can inhibit or interfere with the success of therapy

Videowork is the therapeutic process in which therapists assign popular films that relate to core issues of ongoing therapy. Clients are instructed to do their "homework" between sessions and prepare for discussion in future sessions. Rent Two Films and Let’s Talk in the Morning explores how therapeutic work interwoven with popular films enhances traditional therapy. This much-anticipated revision provides an introduction to using movie rentals in therapy and serves as a ready reference for therapists who want to assign videos as homework.

Authors John and Jan Hesley address the dilemmas that you may face when deciding when it is appropriate to assign a film, and offer friendly guidance and detailed information on every aspect of using films as tools in therapy.

In addition, this updated edition:

  • Provides concise descriptions of dozens of popular videos and shows how they can be used as therapy for specific therapeutic needs (divorce, child abuse, substance abuse, etc.)
  • Contains a revised organizational structure, covering therapy topics based on patient issues frequently encountered in therapy, including marital problems, parenting, job stress, abuse, and emotional disorders
  • Offers suggestions on selecting films, creating assignments, and processing homework
  • Provides newly released film reviews, along with 40 additional films with brief descriptions, in the "Therapists’ Film Reference"

5-0 out of 5 stars Rent Two Films and Buy This Book
This is a great tool for therapy with individuals, groups, families, or to expand your own thinking when watching videos. I have used this book with clients of all ages and in parenting classes. Almost all my clients gained insight and were able to view their own issues more rationally after watching the suggested films. The Setting The Scene and Scripting For Therapy sections are particularly useful if you do not have a chance to view the film prior to recommending it. I am anxiously awaiting the sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perceptive ways to use films for insight and growth
Although intended for therapists, this insightful book about using movies to illuminate our own experiences, motives, and choices is very worthwhile for families. The descriptions of movies like "Field of Dreams," "Breaking Away," and "Dead Poet's Society" provide us with thoughtful and perceptive ways to apply what we see to our own lives. The stories of the patients who were able to understand, identify, and change old patterns after seeing them reflected in the films are exceptionally well presented, and the suggestions for aproaches to using the films are sensitive and illuminating. Any parent will benefit from reading this book to gain a better way of thinking about what we show our children and how we can use what we do show them to improve family understanding and communication. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars not very practical
Everyone seems to buy this book as a reflex, but I hardly have used it in the last year I've had it as a PMR resident. It can be helpful sometimes when preparing a brief topical discussion, but it is not specific enough in terms of what should be done clinically. It's so big it's difficult to take it anywhere with you if you need to study for the boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I was looking for....
I had read several books on essential oils and aromatherapy. Some were filled with anti-Western medicine rhetoric, others were focused on cosmetics, while others contained good anecdotes with recipes interspersed. I use these, but was looking for something else, which I couldn't really articulate.

I haven't finished reading this, but it is exactly what I was looking for. It combines practical application with reasonable science while focusing on healing.

The book is written in the context of the UK medical system, which doesn't match the US system very well, but it isn't hard to generalize the concepts to a different venue.

In the back are several appendices listing the recommendations and summarizing the findings.

Definitely worth the time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comment from a Health Professional
As a Health Education Specialist it is my job to work with clients in finding ways to improve their health. It is also my job to provide the most acurate health information. I make a point to check and double check any informational source that I might use as reference in considering possible avenues.

I have found this book to be extremely helpful in making such decisions pertaining to aromatherapy. It is full of actual case studies, physicians reference notes, reasonable scientific methodology, and sound references. This is one of the only books that I know of that successfully convinced me of the possible use of aromatherapy with more traditional allopathic methods.

If you should choose to pursue aromatherapy as a means to improving your ailments, I do stress that you address your concerns and your plans with your physician to ensure not only the best possible outcome but, your safety as well.

T.Schmenk, M.Ed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Aromatherapy for professioanals
This is a very welll written book but I feel it is not for someone who has just started exploring aromatheray. The summaries are very helpful. This is not a book you could read in one day for sure. It is full of interesting facts but at times one wants to just get into the healing sections quicker. I would suggeast this book to others but they would do better to get intro books on aromatheray if they are new to the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aromatherapy for the Serious
Shirley Price is an author to be trusted. While many books on the market seem to repeat claims without substantive proof, Price's texts offer footnoted references. This text is well researched and provides source material for deeper study.

Price explains the chemistry of aromatherapy clearly, exhorting the reader to learn why and how essential oils affect the body and mind. Chemistry, botany, and application are brought together is a beneficial, down to earth, deep text. With factual content and science on which to base decisions, the aromatherapy practitioner can make informed decisions.

As a teacher of aromatherapy (my students are allied health professionals and alternative practitioners) I recommend both this text and Price's AROMATHERAPY WORKBOOK. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING

brings excitement to the art therapy field...

5-0 out of 5 stars 6 Stars for Contemporary ATx with Adolescents!
Shirley Riley has synthesized her vast clinical experiences with adolescents into a wonderfully pragmatic, insightful, and realistic text which addresses contemporary adolescence and today's priorities in adolescent treatment. While other authors have described the use of art therapy with adolescents, Riley goes beyond classic and often outdated developmental and psychological theories about adolescence and takes a refreshing look at adolescent therapy within a contemporary context. The significance of societal, cultural, and familial inlfluences is emphasized along with the importance of narrative approaches, post modern thought, and short-term, solution-focused treatment. Riley also infuses a variety of salient clinical issues such as distancing, reflecting, and timing in adolescent therapy, addressing and respecting metaphorical communication, and understanding the therapist's countertransference or "entanglements" that inevitably arise when working with adolescents. Additionally, the reader is treated to lively case descriptions and practical clinical applications of art therapy in adolescent group treatment, adolescents and family therapy, inpatient and outpatient populations, residential programming, school settings, and a wide range of individual treatment situations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginning and experienced osteopaths.
This is the long awaited basic textbook for osteopathic medicine. It is surprisingly complete, covering philosophy, history, research, and manipulative techniques. The beginning osteopathic student may find it most useful for its practical discussion on the techniques--high velocity, myofascial release, etc. I believe it is also helpful in standardizing our terminology, which will make it easier when taking board exams or talking with colleagues from other osteopathic schools. It includes contributors well known within the osteopathic community, including Michael and William Kuchera, Melicien Tettambel, Eileen DiGiovanna, and many others. As a family practice resident I frequently turn to this textbook first when I want to know more about how to treat a patient or when preparing lectures for students and housestaff.

5-0 out of 5 stars The osteopathic manipulative therapy bible!
This text is actually required reading for most if not all osteopathic medical students. It is a 'textbook', however, and hence completely (sometimes exhaustively!) comprehensive. But it is easy to read so that anyone with an interest in OMT will get a methodic how-to for myriad techniques, also a thorough history of osteopathic medicine to boot! One of my OMT professors at the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine wrote or co-wrote a few of the chapters so of course, I think those are the best! If you are looking for an educational approach to learning manipulation and the reasons behind it, this is a valuable resouce. ... Read more

Book Description

This is an easy-to-use reference to the most effective play therapy techniques and their substantiated results. Play therapy is not an approach based on guess, trial and error, or whims of the therapist at the moment. It is a well-thought-out, philosophically conceived, developmentally based, and research-supported method of helping children cope with and overcome the problems they experience in the process of living their lives.

Concise digests of play therapy procedures explore the most difficult, as well as the most common problems encountered by play therapists. These digests cover play therapy approaches based on a variety of theoretical positions for dealing with a broad range of specific problems. Among the many issues covered are:

Abuse and Neglect
Aggression and Acting Out
Attachment Difficulties
Autism
Burn Victims
Chronic Illness
Deaf and Physically Challenged
Dissociation and Schizophrenia
Enuresis and Encopresis
Fear and Anxiety
Grief
Hospitalization
Learning-Disabled Children
Mentally Challenged (Handicapped)
Reading Difficulties
Selective Mutism
Self-Concept and Self-Esteem
Social Adjustment Problems
Speech Difficulties
Traumatization
Withdrawn Children

Because they often do not have access to substantiated results, play therapists sometimes doubt themselves and the effectiveness of their work. This book, an invaluable resource, puts an end to such questioning. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Over rated in it's usefullness, but it is adequate.
Depending on your level of training, this may not be the manual for you. Having completed Internal Medicine training and becoming board certified, I have to say this is not "THE" book of need. It is adequate in its intended purpose for residency training. There are many others that will also be adequate...do your research, look them up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only pocket manual of internal medicine to own.
Althought the Washington Manual has faced some competition from other handbooks of internal medicine over the past years (see author Ferri), no manual has provided an alternative that comes close to matching the combination of breadth and succinctness found in this text. My advice to students and housestaff is this: Do not be tempted to buy an alternative manual merely because it fits more comfortably into the pocket of your lab coat. During late on-call nights on the medical wards, when the decision is up to you, you will either be glad you chose Washington or sorry you didn't. Thorough, succint, up to date, and time tested, The Washington Manual is the only choice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overrated
The most overrated book in medicine. Ferri's is much more useful. I bought , rarely used. Not much useful information. Would not recommend to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful in multiple fields
This reference is extraordinarily useful in multiple fields of medicine. Containing succinct information on disease states, therapeutics, and monitoring, this book should be included in every physician and pharmacist's library.

2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible!
There are many more useful resources available. This book was of little use for my practice. Keep searching! ... Read more
