5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
I am an attorney. I represent a substantial number of people who have sustained "mild" traumatic brain injuries. I have many books in my personal library on this subject. I must say that this book is easily the most accessible and well written I've encountered on TBI. Almost every day I recommend this book to someone. I've handed it out to so many of my clients, and to clients' family members, that I'm contemplating a bulk-rate purchase. On many occasions, I've heard back from people to whom I've given this book, and it's as if a light goes on in their heads. They finally understand that they (or their injured family member) are not "going crazy," that their illness is real. It is gratifying to get this feedback because, for many, it's a first step into their new life. If you (who are reading this review) are a TBI survivor, or a friend or family member of a TBI survivor, I highly recommend purchasing, reading, and inwardly digesting this fine book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read, very insightful, helpful and comprehensive
If you or someone you care about is dealing with mild traumatic brain injury or concussions this is an excellent book. The technical aspects of brain injury are explained in plain english. The remainder of the book is well written and insightful. The book explains a very inexact ailment in very understandable terms. It discusses "post concussive syndrome" with the its hundreds of different symptoms which appear and disappear. This is one book that will help everything come together in a clear and concise way.

AN EXCELLENT READ ON A TOUGH SUBJECT.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mild TBI only- don't get this book for a glimpse into...
where to go for a more serious TBI. The book is sufficient and does have some resources listed for those who have or have been affected by someone with a MILD TBI. It has short snippits of others who have TBI which leave the reader longing for more detail- patricularly about outcome. This is not the book for those with anything more than a MILD TBI- for those with mild TBI you should find some useful info, if not solace that you're not alone, but for those needing more specific info on what to do after the dust settles, particularly with a more serious brain injury this book is not for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Informative, Easy to Read, a Lifesaver
One of my therapists recommended this book to me - and boy what a difference it makes to know that I'm not alone, that I'm not going crazy, and that things are not as hopeless as they appear.

I don't know if I would have gotten through the trials and tribulations after the car accident last year if it weren't for this wonderful book (along with "Brainlash by Gail Denton). I actually put yellow sticky notes on dozens of the pages and took it in with me when I went to see my doctor. It was SO HELPFUL.

If you've been in a car accident or been through any kind of head trauma and have been having trouble getting "back to normal", then get this book. It will help.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last!!!
I was so relieved to find something that could help me know I am not crazy seeing what my child is going through since the accident. It explained the seizures and why it can't be found. It let me know what I can expect form time to time. Believe me it has happened. I am giving it to her head trauma doctor. The alternative therapies are so very helpful. I recommend this to everyone. I want to tell the author-THANK YOU.
Thank you for focusing on the mild which interupts peoples lives just like the severe. THANK YOU!! ... Read more

Book Description

Behavioral dyscontrol is arguably the most difficult issue to address when treating a person with brain injury. Contingency management, insight acquisition, and skill building are excellent methods, but these traditional approaches often fail to rehabilitate patients with severe behavioral problems. Are they destined for institutionalization, or is there a treatment that will let them resume their lives as active members of the community? Neuropsychosocial Intervention: The Practical Treatment of Severe Behavioral Dyscontrol after Acquired Brain Injury describes an innovative, clinically proven methodology based on over 20 years of clinical work with persons with brain injury. Neuropsychosocial treatment is an environmental intervention that focuses on the behavior of the people whom persons with brain injury encounter and the physical environment that they inhabit. It encourages therapists to create an environment for each patient after examining neurological, cognitive, adjustment, and environmental variables.This book outlines the nature and significance of behavioral dyscontrol, explains aggression, and details the neuropsychosocial treatment approach and the principles on which it is based. Providing numerous case vignettes, it demonstrates that even persons with brain injury who have severe behavioral problems can succeed with amazing results. With dedication and the proven techniques described in Neuropsychosocial Intervention, you too can help them reach their maximum potential. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging
The second edition (2001) of this work has become the reference book of choice in our practice for ultrasound imaging of the musculoskeletal system, such that a copy is available at each location where this modality is employed.

My only criticism is that at times one has to work to find the required information, as it is not always brought together systematically in one location but may be found scattered on different pages. We use as a companion book the second edition (2001) of "Clinical Sports Medicine" by Peter Brukner and Karim Khan, which is not an imaging book but provides much useful information in a well-written, systematic fashion.

I pondered for a while before allocating the star rating, as this is really an excellent book. I would prefer at this time to give four and a half stars to this second edition of "Musculoskeletal Ultrasound", reserving the additional half star for a later edition when I hope information will be arranged in more user-friendly and systematic fashion.

Those interested in musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging will not want to be without this book. ... Read more

Hypermobility syndrome (HMS) is an inherited connective tissue disorder affecting collagen that is characterized by a collection of features and symptoms. HMS is often encountered in patients, but it is easily overlooked. This practical resource educates readers to its presentation, what to look for, and how best to treat it. Following a brief description of the historical and genetic background of the condition, HMS is described in relation to other connective tissue disorders, such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and the Marfan syndrome. Since HMS may occur in childhood, adolescence, adulthood, pregnancy, or old age, each of these stages is covered in the book, with detailed information on the presentation of the condition and its management. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hypermobility Syndrome recognition and managment for therapi
People who are are very flexible, that is hypermobile for the most part are very lucy. They are usually very graceful and good at sports but for a small percentage of them flexibility is not so kind. They have on going joint and muscle pains and uncomfortable fealings of stiffness. As they are more flexible than average their movements appear to be in the normal range, but for them this reduced mobility Faced with a person who to all intent and purposes move well, it is hard for the medical profession to take their complaints as seriously as they should. This condition affects women, start in adolescence as growing pains and continues through out their lives.
This book is the first to describe how to help these patients. Very often physical therapy is too vigorous for them, their symptoms become worse, they complain more and and in an attempt to convey their problem can appear very neurotic. They are not; they are just in pain.
This excelent book will be a comfort to patients who will feel understood probably for the first time and an excelent guide to those who are trying to help these poor people ... Read more

Book Description

Artists have always known intuitively what science is just beginning to discover: that creating a visual image through any medium can produce physical and emotional benefits for both the creator as well as those who view it. Most important, you don't need to think of yourself as an artist or even believe you have any "talent" to tap into the healing powers of art.

In this remarkable testament to the power of creativity, Barbara Ganim shows step-by-step how to use art to heal body, mind, and spirit. By using guided meditation and artistic techniques, you can gain insight and clarity into depression, anxiety, rage, and even illnesses, including cancer, arthritis, and AIDS.

At once inspirational and instructive, Art and Healing will teach you how to connect with negative, painful, and even repressed emotions, and then express them through drawing, painting, sculpture, or collage. Releasing these feelings through the creative process frees up the immune system and clears the mind, allowing the body to fight off disease and begin to heal emotional wounds. Filled with actual stories from those who have triumphed over adversity and with more than a hundred different pieces of artwork created using this groundbreaking method, Art and Healing is sure to provide the tools needed for healing body and spirit.

2-0 out of 5 stars really disappointing
As a survivor of serious illness, I was really disappointed by the message of this book that art making would help to reveal the hidden metaphors of illness. Ideas such as cancer results from emotional repression of anger and heart disease is the lack of ability to love are insulting,frankly, to people who have serious medical conditions. The information in this book, while presented in an easy-to-read format, is simplistic in its tone and content. The author spends more time talking about herself and her workshops than giving the reader some real guidance on art making for healing. Illustrations are beautiful, but the content was less than satisfying

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed yet readable, inspirational and helpful
Ms. Ganim's wealth of experience, fluency in art, and intuitive understanding of the human experience comes through in this book. Case studies and excellent color plates help to put life into the points and exercises she gives. There is a tendency to hyperbole and sometimes what seems too good to be true may be just that. But I concede that tendency to anyone who is enthusiastic about their work. This book is made to be used. The exercises are doable and procede in a logical, stepwise fashion. No one needs to be an artist to benefit from these exercises. Ms. Ganim's definition of healing as opposed to cure puts this work in perspective and gives it validity. I would highly recommend it to anyone seriously looking to experience healing in mind, body, and spirit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful guidebook for non-therapists!
This is a great book for lay people. Many books of this type are too academic, densely written or boring to the average non-professional reader who might be interested in this topic. The writer makes the concept so easy to understand. It's filled with examples of interesting (and often beautiful) art work with words and stories by the creators. Very powerful to have the individuals who themselves have gone through life-threatening illnesses and traumatic situations talk about the healing power of art. Particularly fascinating to see examples of how art can be used globally and with the environment. Kudos to the all the people who shared so honestly their intimate stories and viewpoints, and congratulations to the author for compiling such a compelling body of work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written
Excellent resource and overview for anyone interested in this powerful new field of art as a force for healing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not groundbreaking, not new information
In contrast to the previous reviewer, I have to say that this book is not groundbreaking. The author has simply taken material that already exists in the fields of art therapy and arts medicine, fashioned it into a book. There are so many other books that deal with this material such as MCNiff's Art as Medicine, Allen's Art is a Way of Knowing, and Malchiodi's Art Therapy Sourcebook, each provides more grounded, novel information than what is provided in this particular book. I also kept wishing that the author did not refer to cancer or illness as a gift-- that concept is tired and not appropriate to any literature on healing wisdom. This book would have been wiser to stay away from that all together. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hyperbaric Medicine for Neurological Conditions
Nothing is more traumatic and challenging than brain injury: for the brain is our master conductor, the place where self resides. For those who suffer any kind of deficit in brain function - whether from autism, stroke, learning disorders, sports-injuries, spinal cord injuries, near-drowning or traumatic brain injury - it often seems there is no answer, and no hope.

But there is hope. New findings in neuroscience prove that the brain continues to develop new neurons throughout life, that the brain can grow new connections, and that with proper treatment the seemingly intractable cases of brain injury can improve remarkably. One treatment that has proven quite effective is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy - a treatment in which patients breathe pure oxygen inside a special chamber with a slightly increased amout of atmospheric pressure (less pressure than an airplane). In many cases those who suffer from these conditions show great improvement in speech, memory, social and cognitive abilities after undergoing a series of hyperbaric oxygen treatments.

In head injuries if cerebral blood flow is interrupted a negative chain reaction is started. The lack of oxygen, or hypoxia, disturbs, neuron metabolism within the alarmingly short time of just 6 seconds. neurons begin to die without blood flow. In serious injury or heart attack or significant stroke, for instance, measurable activity in the cerebral cortex - our thinking brain - can cease within 2 minutes and brain damage begins within 5 minutes. Within 10 minutes, the brain stem, responsable for our basic motor functions stops. Brain and heart tissue deprived of its oxygen supply may undergo necrosis or infarction. However, hyperbaric oxygen treatment has proven itself to help awaken the sleeping neurons in the ischemic penumbral areas of the injured brain, allowing new growth of neurons, and healing of the brain and body. Overall, there is a decrease of cerebral edema, an increase in cerebral blood flow and an increase in oxygen to the neurons which help to maintain proper cellular function. This accounts for the "miracles" that we often see with hyperbaric treatment.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is also used for respiratory conditions, carbon monoxide poisoning, wound healing and for divers with decompression sickness.

"Oxygen is to the brain what rain is to the desert ~ it creates an oasis in life".

Lane scott, PhD is a neuroscience medical researcher in Campbell, California and is the administrative director at StanfordHyperbarics.com

Review:

The book is well written, and makes heavy medical science easy to read. It explains the medical and physiological science of hyperbaric oxygen treatments ("HBOT") in some detail, but was written for you and me to read and understand. It reviews HBOT for many different diseases and conditions, including MS, stroke, arthritis etc. The commonality for these diseases and their response to HBOT is they each have systemic circulatory problems and an immune response, with disruption of cellular metabolism as root problems in their etiology.

It is very helpful for parents and patients to understand whether or not HBOT would be a viable treatment alternative. It also discusses how HBOT affects the condition, or disease, and whether the treatments are curative (carbon dioxide poisoning), or simply maintain the current state (multiple sclerosis).

If you have a child, or relative who has had a stroke, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis (yes- MS), order this book NOW! Learn all you can about HBOT, its applications to your loved one's condition. When you consider all the pain, agony, lost income and costs associated with currently insurance approved therapies, and the dismal results achieved, spend a few dollars and an hour to read the relevant parts of the book and think outside the box, a little. HBOT is not laetrile. HBOT is a well established (everywhere else in the world) and basic technology that enables your body to get a boost to naturally repair itself through its own natural physiological response to oxygen under pressure. HBOT is used every day in the US for wound care - which has much of the same basis as neurological wound care (stroke, asphyxia, or brain injury).

The Author

Dr. Neubauer is one of the world's top experts on HBOT and his work, efforts and patient care are well-respected by other top HBOT experts. He is known and respected as the "Grandfather of HBOT for neurological conditions". While at his center for my daughter's treatments I met a number of HBOT experts who visit him to confer and continue research and had the privilege of reading letters from many more HBOT physician- scientists from UK, Canada, Italy, China, Russia, the US, etc.

HBOT Summaries

HBOT is used worldwide for various injuries including various poisonings, and crushed wound injuries (sic - car accidents, etc.). HBOT is used in many advanced countries including UK, Italy, Russia, Japan and China (and many poorer countries) for treating closed wound brain injuries from birth, accidents, or strokes. HBOT is not accepted by the US medical community, yet, due to the lack of double-blinded studies as well as due to the lack of understanding of the underlying physiology. Note: the underlying physiology of approximately 50% of the drugs listed in the Physician's Desk Reference are poorly understood.

HBOT has been clinically demonstrated to be effective in treating a variety of closed wound brain damage injuries by enabling the body to re-establish damaged blood vessels, and by "waking up" neurons made dormant from injuries. Recent Russian studies show some of the underlying physiological mechanisms (for neurological injuries) appear to be the elimination of the deficit and restoration of CO2 formation and consequently the autoregulation of the O2 transport to the neuron (using minimized hyperbaric treatments - 1.1 - 1.2 ATA). Essentially, correcting the effects of oxygen deprivation from the injury by re-establishing micro-circulatory and intra-cellular O2 / CO2 metabolisms. The disrupted neuronal metabolisms appear throughout the "penumbra" of the brain injury. This helps explain Dr. Neubauer's theory "waking up" of sleeping/dormant neurons.

Personal Experience

My daughter (Rebecca, five yo) has extremely severe cerebral palsy (died at birth for 35 minutes, life support for 6 days; no viable EEG, etc.). Going into the HBOT therapies, I was excited and hopeful. But, not prepared for how I was amazed at her response, as well as the improvement in her brain (SPECT) scans. I had several leading doctors (cardiologists and pediatric neurologists) read her SPECT scan results and each expert was astounded at the changes. Rebecca gained metabolic activity in 80%+ of the areas that were previously inactive/dormant prior to HBOT treatments. Rebecca clearly demonstrated the physical ability improvements corresponding with SPECT scan improvements. Her improved physical control, coordination and motor learning were easily measured and noted by every therapist and doctor who regularly works with her.

HBOT for CP children

For children, HBOT is not a miracle cure. Children must grow, develop and mature through stages. Each stage provides a neurological basis for developing into the following stage. HBOT enables the patient to revitalize damaged, but living but otherwise non-functional neurons. However, once those neurons are revitalized, they need input on how to develop, where to establish connections, and how to be integrated into the brain and body's general system. Thus, HBOT must be co-treated with physical therapies.

Recent HBOT Clinical Findings Dr. Neubauer's recent International Symposium on HBOT for CP and the Brain Injured Child (July 25-28, 2001) presented numerous positive clinical research findings on HBOT for brain injuries. While there is substantial work to be done to better understand the underlying metabolic and physiological principles of what happens on the cellular and systemic levels, there is very little doubt about the efficacy of HBOT for treating neurologic injuries and conditions.

Many HBOT Center Medical Directors can name cortically blind CP patients who have gained sight after 40-150 HBOT treatments. This is exceptionally objective clinical information that should be pursued.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good explanation of hyperbaric oxygen written for the layman
An easy to understand, very knowledgeable book focusing on the uses of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) in the medical field. The book includes an overview of HBO, the theory behind it, what kinds of problems can be treated, and the outcomes of those treatments. The authors have included case studies and many references to back up their findings. It is refreshing to find a book that has been written for the layperson. 5-0 out of 5 stars Parkinson's Disease
The author of this book did a great job in explaining what Parkinson's Disease is and giving information for the patient and the caregiver. I am a dental hygienist and I learned just an overview of the disease in school. After having my first patient with the disease I decided to learn more about it. I learned alot from this book that I should of already known for my patient. The book tells you the symptoms and the side effects of the disease and advice on drug therapy, diet, and exercise. Some people don't even know that they have the disease for a couple of months or even years. They think it is just old age or arthritis. The book also states what kind of medical advice to seek.
I have never met a patient with Parkinson's Disease until a couple of months ago. I didn't know what to expect. When the patient walked in I was shocked. She looked normal and wasn't shaking. She was the sweetest patient I had met. She explained to me her life and how she lives with the disease. She said that she sometimes gets embarrased to be seen in public when she has her tremors because she thinks that everyone is staring at her. But she said she is the same person as all of us. She just has to take medication and she gets tired alot more than you and me. When I was cleaning her teeth she only had mild tremors so it wasn't that difficult to work on her. But one day I will probably get a patient who has severe tremors but I am ready thanks to this book in guiding me with the knowledge of what I needed to know. I think that if you know someone who has Parkinson's disease or if you would like to learn more about the disease buy this book and you will be filled with all the information you need to know about Parkinson's disease.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Information
Never having had any experience or knowledge on the basis of this disease, I got the book to help me understand my father's disease. I have gotten a fuller understanding of the causes of the disease, the symptoms, the treatments (and making decisions regarding the selections of the treatments), and the progression of the disease. I feel much better informed and feel I can support my father better because of it. It was definitely written to help support the patient and family supporting that patient.

Book Description

Although the healing qualities of nature have been recognized and relied on for centuries as a valuable part of convalescence, recent history has seen nature's therapeutic role virtually eclipsed by the technological dominance of modern medicine. As the twentieth century comes to a close and the medical community reacknowledges the importance of the environment to recovery, the healing garden is emerging as a supplement to drug- or technology-based treatments.

Healing Gardens celebrates this renewed interest in nature as a catalyst for healing and renewal by examining the different therapeutic benefits of healing gardens and offering essential design guidance from experts in the field.

Unique and comprehensive, Healing Gardens provides up-to-date coverage of research findings, relevant design principles and approaches, and best practice examples of different types of healing gardens. It begins by exploring what current research reveals about the connection between nature, human stress reduction, and medical outcomes. It then presents case studies and design guidelines for outdoor spaces in medical settings that include general, psychiatric, and children's hospitals as well as hospices, nursing homes, and Alzheimer's facilities. Historical information, literature reviews, and studies on use are included for each type of outdoor space covered, offering important insights into what works in healing gardens-and what doesn't.

Generously supplemented with photographs, site plans, anecdotes, and more, Healing Gardens is an invaluable practical guide for landscape architects and others involved in creating and maintaining medical facilities, and an extremely useful reference for those responsible for patient care.

A unique and comprehensive look at the therapeutic effects and design of healing gardens For more and more people, the shortest road to recovery is the one that leads through a healing garden. Combining up-to-date information on the therapeutic benefits of healing gardens with practical design guidance from leading experts in the field, Healing Gardens is an important resource for landscape architects and others working in this emerging area. With the help of site plans, photographs, and more, it presents design guidelines and case studies for outdoor spaces in a range of medical settings, including:
* Acute care general hospitals.
* Psychiatric hospitals.
* Children's hospitals.
* Nursing homes.
* Alzheimer's facilities.
* Hospices.
