5-0 out of 5 stars Like sound advice from a good friend
Did you ever wish you could just sit by Mom's feet again and absorb her wisdom? Remember all those things that Mom said would help you succeed, and those things that might get in your way? Well, we remember some of them, but not all.

Create Your Own Luck feels like Mom-or a good friend-giving you lots of perspectives, advice, and cautions. Azriela Jaffe is like a mom-or a good friend-to thousands of people. She's a wife and mother of three children, a nationally syndicated columnist, and coordinator of a wide network of entrepreneurial couples.

We've all caught ourselves observing someone's good fortune and exclaiming that the fortunate person is so lucky. Jaffe asserts that creating luck is a skill that we can learn. It's an attitude toward life that we can master and, yes, control our own lives. In this book, she shows us how in a conversational tone that's captivating.

The text is interwoven with stories told in the first person. The reading is so comfortable that I was drawn in to a sense of being one-on-one with the author . . . probably curled up in front of the fireplace. One after another, Jaffe shares Luck Builders, the behaviors that attract good luck. Interspersed with these words of encouragement are Luck Busters, warnings about the behaviors that sabotage the good luck you attract, and Luck Blockers, behaviors that repel good luck. Throughout the book are Luck Journal Exercises, suggestions to do things that will help keep your thinking where it needs to be. The book is well-seasoned with thought-provoking quotes.

The eight principles, used as the organization of the book, are Open Your Mind, Ask for What You Want and Be Willing to Work to Get It, Pay Attention to Your Intuition and Meaningful Coincidences, Respond to Life's Trials with Resiliency, Take Yourself and Others Off the Hook, Have Patience in the Right Dose, Give and Receive in Equal Measure, and Focus on the Positive.

And here's my recommendation, in action form: After I read Create Your Luck, I sent it as a gift to my daughter, Jennifer, a junior in college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Lucky
I found this book to be charming and delightful. It's easy to read and the principles easy to grasp. My life will change for the better because I will bring more luck into my life, thanks to Azriela!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Written from a Female's Perspective
This is an excellent book filled with practical advice on increasing your good luck. My only complaint (a very small one) is that the book is probably more targeted to a female audience with several references to finding a husband or handling children. As a man, I found most of the exercises too introspective for my taste. Primitive that I am, I don't like to recollect big mistakes that I have made or probe deeply into my own psyche. I guess I'm just not wired that way. These small issues aside. I thought the book was fun to read and worthwhile. I probably enjoyed Dr. Wiseman's "The Luck Factor," a little more.

5-0 out of 5 stars You CAN Create Your Own Luck
Do you believe that good luck is something that "just happens?" Do you ever wonder why good things happen again and again to some people, while others seem to have black clouds over their heads? In this book, Azriela Jaffe identifies eight strategies for attracting good luck. Each strategy comes with Luck Builders, Luck Busters, and Luck Blockers--specific behaviors that can bring luck to you or chase it away. With these strategies, you can start making lucky breaks come your way.

Although we can't control everything in our lives, we can open the door to new opportunities and give luck easy entry into our lives. Simply changing your mindset and being open to new possibilities can make luck happen in amazing ways for you. That's the point of a story involving me that is included in "Create Your Own Luck." I won't give all the details here, but on page 106 you can read about how I was able to salvage a problem situation and turn it into an exciting opportunity.

Being included in this book is in itself an example of one of the ways I've created luck in my life. When my problem occurred, and I made lemonade from the lemons, I posted the story to an email discussion group. Azriela saved that post and asked for my permission to include it in her book. If I hadn't taken the time to share my story, I wouldn't have been "lucky" enough to have my story shared with the world through this book. Just making yourself available can make you lucky!

I've always been a big believer in creating your own luck, and I had employed some of the strategies here intuitively. The good advice in this book showed me how to consciously and consistently use luck-creating strategies to create success after success. If you read this book and put its ideas to work for you, you will begin attracting good fortune in all areas of your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
This book is just great. It combines every metaphysical, positive thinking principle that has been written in hundreds of books- into one small, READABLE, AFFORDABLE (!) treasure. The author "gets it" and - after reading this book- we get it too. A great gift! No preaching here, just a wonderful communication of positive ideas laid out beautifully. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
"Rehabilitation Protocols for Surgical and Nonsurgical Procedures meets the challenge of providing techniques, as well as responding to the demand for accountability in the current dynamic healthcare environment. The research for the book has also tested the proposed spine protocols' acceptance among other spine practitioners in the East Texas region, and across the United States. During the past eight years, these protocols have been presented to many spine physicians and rehabilitation specialists to utilize and critique, the results of which are presented within these pages. McFarland and Burkhart have a combined experience of more than fifty years as physical therapy practitioners. Dr. Danielson, as well as the physicians at NeuroCare Network and the East Texas Neurologic Institute, has continued to support efforts in this area. These protocols have provided guidelines for referring surgical and nonsurgical patients for therapy, resulting in the development of a foundation for therapy experience that has generated new ideas for rehabilitation and care.
The American Back Society has contributed to this work as well, with the efforts of Executive Director Dr. Aubrey Swartz and current President Dr. Philip Greenman particularly instrumental. They have supported the development of these protocols since the early phases, extending the work throughout the ABS's worldwide membership through conferences and publications and sponsoring surveys for further research in the rehabilitation realm. Their combined efforts, Dr. Danielson's support, and the research of the authors have culminated with the publication of this book."

5-0 out of 5 stars Did Ellen Levine attend PS 177 in Brooklyn from 1946 to 1954
Was Ellen Levine in my elementary school class? If so, we are both authors of many books. We're both 57 or so. If so, you were my friendly classmate at PS 177 or D.A. Boody JHS. Is that you, Ellen? If so, a warm hello from a grandma of five who also writes a lot of books, a history buff, and was also born around 1941. If this is another Ellen, then just ignore this message.

Keep on writing those wonderful books. They are helpful and make the world a smarter place. Mrs. A

5-0 out of 5 stars Returning to My Journey
Upon reading Jan Phillips latest effort, "God Is At Eye Level", I was called upon to examine where I stood on my journey. Husband, family, & career had taken the time & energies previously used for silent contemplation. Pursuits, especially my photography, had been pushed aside. Frankly, I was reacting to life's events. Jan's book helped me to reclaim the time spent examining this life. It moves you to stop, think, ponder & reflect. It will cause you to focus on the miracles of each day. Her ideas will instill in one the importance of surrounding oneself with those people and things that make you smile. In the process, her book will unlock the creativity that may have been pushed aside to attend to the more mundane aggravations of daily life.

5-0 out of 5 stars God Is at Eye Level
For me, the prose read like inspired writing. As I read her words, and viewed Jan Phillips photographs, I was influenced , and uplifted, by the spiritual depth, clarity, empathy, wisdom, and balance---all of which were genuinely offered within these artistically presented pages. This book is definitely a valuable and a loving gift to those of us who are aspiring photographers! Each of the participatory Reflections --insightful, enjoyable,down-to-earth FUN suggestions by Jan-- gives us clear ideas/ inspirations to Start where we are, right Now! The book encourages us to explore our creativity, our lives, and the world around us.I know this book is one I will continue to read and re-read. The courage, grace, and wisdom offered to every reader of God Is At Eye Level is ageless.

3-0 out of 5 stars Inspired but limiting...
Although the photographs and quotes are inspiring, I found the directives to be less than constructive. One directive suggests that you "take a deep breath and then THROW AWAY all photographs you have taken that are out of focus or too light or too dark". What? I was so dissappointed in that conventional criticism. The impression I got was that there is a very specific "right vs. wrong" way to 'spiritual photography'. If the book is based loosely on methods of Art Therapy, or rather, Photographic Arts Therapy, it seems to have missed the mark. Photography in my opinion, should be more about the creative process and creating visual communication rather than making a technically-sound, conventional-looking photograph. Very disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A moving book
"God is at Eye Level" is a beautiful book--a moving book. Here Jan Phillips discusses the healing effect of photography on the personal and sociological levels. The design, photographs, quote-selections, and lucid writing are artfully woven together to produce an evocative read.

Several sub-themes radiate, all reinforced with illuminating quotes from famous artists and thinkers. Among my favorite themes is the relevance of "the moment," or "the present." As Jan says, when embarking on an "excursion of seeing, the rest of one's life is temporarily on hold. There is nothing to reckon with but the moment at hand." When anchored in the present, one's regrets and fears tend to dissolve. You are treated with a "sweet joy" and the healing nature of a "now" orientation.

Your photographs reflect who you are. As a result, you can discover as much about seeing inside yourself as the world outside. When you go out and shoot, Jan says, "honor your instincts, for the images that result are like clues to a treasure hunt," symbols which later tell you who you are, where you've been, and where you are going.

Jan tries to develop a relationship with everyone she photographs. She strives to achieve empathy with all her subjects. For her, the relationship comes first. Her portraits grow out of this closeness and express the intimacy from which they emerge. As a result, a portrait reflects the authenticity of a person's spirit.

Jan discusses the healing influence photography has upon society. She cites several photographers whose work evoked a national response and encouraged social reform. Among others, Jan includes the work of Dorothea Lange (migrant farmers) and Laura Gilpin (Navajos).

And lastly, many photographers wait until they are inspired before they go shooting. Jan says that for her, inspiration comes while working, not before it. The key is to start working, then discover while underway. Once you do, you will experience the healing nature of photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Portrait Party is a success!
I found Jan's latest book to be wonderful. I love the exersizes and recently did one called "Portrait Day". Only I changed it to "Portrait Party". I invited my good friends over, told them to wear something that expressed their essence and set up my kitchen as a make shift "studio". It even has a pocket door so our "sessions" could be done in private. Each woman came in and each "shoot" was wonderfully unique and different. Light refreshments were provided and everyone enjoyed themselves. At the end of the day we did several fun group photos.
