Did anyone proofread this book???
The information in this book is pretty good, and seems to be a fairly thorough review for Boards, etc. More illustrations and diagrams would be helpful, especially if carefully selected or drawn specifically for the book. Many of the ones in the book seem to have been haphazardly pulled from random sources.

My biggest problem with this book is the amazingly high number of typographical errors. The Cardiac chapter was particularly bad (in one four line answer, "mmHg" was referred to as "Tom Hg", "min Hg", "Trim Hg", and "mmHg"). After a while, the errors became more distracting, and worrisome---if there are this many typos that I'm catching, how many errors are in the factual information??

Overall, I'd recommend this book, but take it with a grain of salt and check out anything that seems iffy. Hopefully they'll get better proofreaders for the next edition. ... Read more

holy cow!
HOLY COW! I just came upon this book in the rehab section and had to get it. I've struggled through Braddom for three years now, and wish I'd had this little handbook. There's as much info packed in here as in Braddom, minus the fluff. This is about as much bang as you're going to get for the buck. GET IT!

A must have , gold medal book!
Physical Therapists and other rehab practicianers should buy this informative and well researched book.The book outlines and explains clinical evaluations, diagnostic tests, therapeutic measures, and various basis rehab problems. As a physical therapist practicing in an interdisciplinary setting, I find Dr. Tan's book extremely helpful in facilitating understanding and communication with other members of the rehab team. Dr. Tan, a physiatrist, physical therapist, researcher and teacher, deserves the gold for writing this outstanding interdisciplinary book. This book is a must-have for all therapists and rehab practitioners!

The best book of its kind; I highly recommend it!
Dr Tan's book sets a new standard of excellence in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The text is comprehensive, well-organized, concise, up-to date and practical. I find myself referring to it frequently in my daily clinical practice (especially the excellent chapter on pharmacology). I wish the book was available when I was a resident and when I was reviewing for the boards. The appendices which include plates of normal x-rays and MRI films (all clearly labeled), as well as a comprehensive updated addresses and phone numbers of important PM&R resources, are invaluable. The BEST book on enzymes
I've read several books on enzymes and have been using them in my acupuncture practice about a year. I've had great success treating chronic inflammation, sinusitis and acid reflux.

One of my patients had sinusitis so bad he couldn't smell anything. After taking anti-inflammatory enzymes a few weeks, he can now smell things he hasn't smelled in years.

Enzymes can be used to prevent and treat cancer, atherosclerosis, parasites and candida. Many people suffer from inadequate digestion, leading to malnutrition. When you take a high quality enzyme supplement, you will digest your food for a change and feel amazingly better.

A deficiency in lipase can cause a person to be unable to lose weight. Lipase digests fat and you must have enough to burn your body fat. Taking supplemental lipase between meals will allow the enzymes to be absorbed into your bloodstream to dissolve fat deposits of all sorts, including in your arteries. (atherosclerosis)

Protease digests protein. The outer coating of cancer cells is made of a very thick protein. If you take supplemental protease, your immune system will utilize it to dissolve the protein coating on cancer cells.

Chronic ear infections can be cleared up with protease. The infection is caused by a virus. The virus has a protein coating that can be dissolved so the immune system can eradicate it.

This book is truly amazing. This is by far the most thorough and easily applied information on enzymes I have found. The author makes wild curative claims for enzymes and I can verify she is only stating facts!

A must have book for anyone interested in health!

MOST COMPREHENSIVE BOOK ON ENZYMES
This is the most comprehensive book on food enzymes I have read to date. It includes a body typing based on body shape, personality, and potential health problems and how they relate to digestive needs and imbalances and how to correct using foods and enzymes. Easy for the layman and a boon for the practitioner.

This book has helped our family tremendously with understanding what is occuring and how to stay ahead of the game dealing with ALS.

Ideas shared in the book are practical and helpful.

A good read for families dealing with ALS...especially care givers.

Must read for newly diagnosed and families.
My mother was diagnosed with ALS in January 2001. Unfortunately, it took me 4 months as "Buyer Waiting" to obtain a copy of this book. By the time I received the book, my family and I already felt besieged by the challenges of rapidly advancing bulbar ALS. While I cannot speak for what this book might mean for the ALS patient, I can attest for what it has meant to me as caretaker. As such, I found my time and attention limited to each immediate crisis at hand. Fortunately, the book is arranged in such a way that you can skip around--reading whichever chapter or chapter portion pertains to your current dilemma. Sadly, I lost my Mom on Easter Sunday 2003. Probably, I only read 50 percent of this book before her passing--but that 50% did help me navigate the turbulent challenges of this disease and connect emotionally with my mother on a level that otherwise might not have been possible once she lost her ability to communicate. Excellent book for reviewing the actions of muscles
This book is good if you want to know exactly what action each muscle performs in the human body. It is listed as a reference for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. It is quite good for the kinesiology portion of the NCETMB. Everyone who treats Low Back Pain needs to read this book
I have been using this text in my office for over a year, and rarely a day goes by that I don't reference information from Dr. McGill's wonderful book. It is a scientifically detailed and rich text which translates it's trenendous quantification of the tolerances, characteristics and capacities of the human spine into practicle clinical application that is well understood by the clinician and patient alike. All physical medicine specialists should be required to read this book.

An appreciative reference to psychosocial issues is made, yet, the currently vogue practice of looking purely to psychosocial considerations and de-emphasising the biological/biomechanical components of back injury is challenged. The current approach is a Biopsychosocial one, and Proff. McGill fills this book with concrete reasons not to ignore the physical characteristics of the spine. He makes the point, that is dramatically clear in day to day clinical practice, that with effective care based on sound principles many of the pschosocial issues become much more manageable.

In this text common beliefs and practices are rigorously scrutinized experimentally so as to better understand the clinical rationalle. When strategies for injury prevention are found to be unsound, alternatives commiserate with biomechanical and practicle sefety considerations are offered with sound data based reasoning given.

One of the most unique and valuable features of this text is that throughout the Scientific Foundations chapters, which describ the laboratory based biomechanical data in grand detail, are relatively short "Clinical Relavence" sections. These prominent and easy to read sections take the data just described and provide remarkably practicle applications of this knowledge. This feature has been tremendously helpful in my practice as it has allowed me to make strong recommendations to my patients with the ability to educate them as to why. Their understanding has increased compliance and empowered them by adding to their ability to help themselves.

Thank you Dr.McGill for such an in depth scientific analysis of a complex problem that is so remarkably practicle as a resource.

Outdstanding infromation
McGill's book is a remarkable source of infromation based on solid research and a clear source of prudent advice for preventing back injury and for managing chronic low back problems. Having suffered from an old low back injury for many years I find it the first book that presents data on why and how to manage back problems. Clearly written and extensively documented it should benefit both those who help manage back problems as well as sufferers themselves. As a physician, I highly recommend it to other physicians, phyical therapists and those who want information and cogent advice about one of the bugaboos of life.

"Low Back Disorders" delivers!
I've had 42 years of intense back problems and had fusion of the last three lumbar vertebrae and S-1. Prior to reading the book and applying the recommended exercises, I was bedridden up to 20 hours a day for weeks. After trying the FIRST SET of the "Big Three" exercises, I noticed a slight improvement in the back! Within a week, I was hiking in the mountains and two weeks later skiing! Following the book's suggestions has given me a pain-free life of mobility.

If you are an exercise traditionalist, prepare for a shock. This book turns the world of back exercises upside down! Almost everything I had learned-and I was a coach-was incorrect and would lead to tissue injury according to research. I should have been born in Missouri, because my mantra is "Prove it to me!" My natural skepticism melted away as Prof. McGill presented scientific evidence to bolster his statements. He lists numerous pages of investigative results to give credence to the findings. Illustrations and commentary explain clearly the proper way to exercise to protect the back as you build endurance in the torso. It is written to address the minutia desired by professionals, but lucid enough in explanations to satisfy the "anatomy-challenged."

If you are frustrated with low back pain and its deleterious effect on your personality and living, this book delivers!

Help for Sufferers of Low Back Pain
This is a superb book that is useful for both clinicians and patients alike. Using methods based on electromyographic measurements published by McGill and his colleagues in many scientific journals, he ascertains which muscles are activated in a variety of exercises. This becomes important for patients who have low back problems and must avoid heavy spine loads both in the fitness center and at work. He lists a variety of commonly prescribed exercises that should be avoided by persons with low back problems: sit ups, pelvic tilts, leg raises, low back extension exercises on machines and hip flexion exercises using the Roman chair. He then recommends a series of exercises that are designed to strengthen back muscles and stabilize the spine while at the same time minimizing spinal compression that could exacerbate back problems: the curl-up, side bridges and "bird dog" leg extensions.

This book should be recommended reading for all physical therapists and strength trainers with clients having low back problems and is a must for those suffering from low back pains.

An Investigation of the Role of Biomechanics in LBP
This impressive text sets out with the ambitious task of condensing over two decades of the author's research on the understanding of low back biomechanics. However, this text is not an abstract academic work. Much of Professor McGill's work involves developing conservative rehabilitation programs for individuals with chronic, treatment-resistant, low back pain, with particular focus on ergonomics, posture, and selective exercises.

This well-illustrated text is organized into brief, reader-friendly, chapters that explain the issues surrounding low back disorders, and specific issues of clinical relevance are indicated. Noteworthy is the emphasis placed on developing individual, as opposed to formulaic, strategies for patients. The chapter on epidemiological studies provides findings that argue for the role of both physical and psychosocial factors in the etiology and perpetuation of low back disorders. However, given the author's area of expertise, the text is primarily focused on the understanding of lumbar biomechanics and the impact of different activities and exercises on the low back.

The author examines, and dispels, a number of myths surrounding low back disorders and their care. Some revelations are: lumbar vertebras serve as shock absorbers of the spine as opposed to the discs, the use of exercises that engage hip flexors (i.e. bent knee sit-ups) are likely to aggravate low back disorders, and exercise programs that emphasize spinal mobility or early morning exercise can actually exacerbate low back problems. More importantly, this understanding allows for explanation to patients why some activities aggravate their low back pain while others do not, and why previous exercise programs failed to produce results. Patients are encouraged to become active participants in their recovery process and to become 'experts' in their own particular low back disorder. This seminal text provides a comprehensive and practical overview of current information on management of low back disorders, from a biomechanical perspective, that is simply unavailable elsewhere.
