Book Description

Evidence-Based Rehabilitation: A Guide to Practice is designed as an entry-level book on evidence-based practice in rehabilitation. Specifically written for rehabilitation practitioners, this exceptional text is not designed to teach students how to do research, but rather how to become critical consumers of research, therefore developing skills to ensure that their rehabilitation practice is based on the best evidence that is available. Much of the text focuses on how knowledge is developed, making it an essential tool for both students and practitioners. While providing the most up-to-date information about evidence-based practice, this comprehensive and well-organized text focuses on building skills for understanding and using evidence, rather than simply doing research. By viewing evidence-based practice from a holistic perspective, this text also recognizes the need to include client preferences and therapists clinical reasoning in the process.Evidence- Based Rehabilitation: A Guide to Practice is a necessary addition to the bookshelf of anyone desiring to incorporate the most current and complete evidence-based research into his or her rehabilitation practice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Knowledge Empowers You"
Postpolio Syndrome
By: Julie K. Silver, MD and Anne C. Gawne, MD
Julie K. Silver, MD, Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Harvard Medical School, Boston; Medical Director, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Network, Framingham, MA

Anne C. Gawne, MD, Former Director of: Post-Polio Clinic, Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation, Warm Springs,GA. Dr. Gawne passed away suddenly in the middle of publishing this book. Dr. Gawne cared deeply about the health and well being of polio survivors. We will miss her.

This newly published book Postpolio Syndrome is being reviewed by:
Dianne De Paul: Careline (post-polio newsletter) Editor and Post Polio Survivor (Polio 1948.)

This is an up to date "Textbook" on the subject of Polio and Postpolio Syndrome. The top polio doctors and therapists in the world have contributed to this project. All the latest information in this ONE book! You will find the answers to the questions you have had about Polio and its side effects over the years. This volume is full of data, facts, and figures about diagnosis, treatment, and coping techniques. It also features current evidence-based guidelines for exercise therapy, aquatic therapy, and energy conservation measures. This book tells how it was in the beginning and how it is now.

Years have been spent tracking down little bits of information from all over the world about polio and then post-polio syndrome. Many hours have gone into researching any clue about new information on this subject. Only to end up having to search further somewhere else. Now in this book, you can find all the information you could hope for on this subject.

As a POST POLIO SURVIVOR, you might think this book is over your head due to the medical terminology that you will find throughout the book. Don't be put off by that thought. The book is extremely useful with information for all polio survivors and anyone who has encountered Polio and Post-Polio Syndrome in their lives. This is a MUST READ for all survivors and especially for doctors and therapists.

An example of how this book can help you is the following first person account.

For five or six months, I had been having many new ailments. Some so painful my daily life was almost at a standstill. During this time, the HMO was giving me the "HMO Shuffle" and providing no insight into what was wrong with me. The results of this treatment was depression and discouragement. My self-esteem was nil and the fight in me was disappearing. After leaving the doctor's office, I had begun to believe I was doomed and not "worthy" of their help.

After reading and studying Chapter 2, EVALUATING and TREATING SYMPTOMATIC POSTPOLIO PATIENTS everything changed for me. I read and re-read this chapter much as I had read other textbooks when in nursing school so many years ago. I now somehow felt empowered. Each word or sentence I underlined that applied to me gave me new hope. For my next doctor's appointment, I took my new favorite book with me. When the doctor came into the room, I opened the book with all the highlighted words and began to address these problems with newfound determination on my own behalf.
We sat together for over an hour discussing my health status. When the appointment was completed, I had all the referrals that were needed to help find out what really is wrong with me and to get the answers to these new problems. Not only did I get the referrals I needed but I left feeling I am worth it.

Buy this wonderful new book, find out the facts, and use them to empower yourself. Then put this treasure on your Christmas shopping list and give it to the doctors who care for you. This just might be the greatest gift you ever give yourself.

My new motto has become "Knowledge Empowers You." ... Read more

A systematically arranged text presenting the "Maitland's concept" of manual physiotherapy through joint mobilization and manipulation. The approach focuses on detailed assessment, clinical reasoning and reassessment to determine the physical dysfunction and efficacy of manual physiotherapy techniques. It is not the techniques themselves only but the communication, interaction and reasoning processess which create a good manual physiotherapy approach.

Book Description

This volume demonstrates the power of art therapy as a tool for intervening with children from violent homes. Emphasis is given to the short-term setting where time is at a premium and circumstances are unpredictable - because within this setting, mental health practitioners often experience a sense of helplessness in their work with the youngest victims of abusive families.; In this new edition, the author describes the intervention process from intake to termination, highlighting the complex issues involved at various levels of evaluation and interpretation. The text is augmented with 95 children's drawings, which serve to fill the gap between theory and reality.; Specific topics include: inherent frustrations for therapists working in battered women's shelters; what to include in art evaluation; evaluating child abuse and neglect; group art intervention in shelters; and art expression as assessment and therapy with sexually abused children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ...valuable launching tool for therapists...
This book beautifully facilitates the introduction of themes, into practice, that capture the emotional energy of a client in play. The book clearly provides a structure for the therapist to help the individual with the opening and closing of their emotional and psychological boundaries. In general, the techniques illustrate how the therapist is able to help the client more easily access the underlying boundary process and accept directed inputs, their way, that will help them transform poorly developed internal structures, (i.e. family of origin tapes), into healthier ones, (e.g. long held anger can be transformed into present day assertiveness). Overall, this book is a valuable launching tool for therapists considering Play Therapy as an intervention. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best MS Reference Book
I was diagnosed nearly two years ago, and this book has been a very valuable reference. I keep going back to it again and again as I have questions, and despite other reviewers' comments, I felt it was up to date when I purchased it. Perhaps these comments were based on an older edition? I also found the index to be very user-friendly. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with MS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Old Answers for New Questions
Unfortunately, a lot of this information is out of date -- and even if it wasn't, it's some of the answers to some of the questions you might have, presented in a sometimes easily accessible but sometimes difficult to access fashion. Some of the contributions are far more useful than others.
I appreciate the fact that Rosalind Kalb has been a tireless advocate for people with MS, and I hope she updates this book (with a better format) -- but still I wish there were some MS "advocates" out there who weren't taking drug company money.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE book you will ever need
Awesome coverage of all the areas from the basics, to employment and insurance issues, to latest research to many other things.

I bought 2 other books along with this. But after reaing this one, I returned the other two books and it made them redundant.

If you need to buy just one book (even if you have the money to buy 10 books on MS), this is the ONLY book you will ever need.

5-0 out of 5 stars ms information
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT INFORMATION BOOK THAT EVERYONE WITH MS SHOULD OWN. VERY INFORMATIVE WITH ALL THE LATEST INFORMATION.

3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated Information
While this book was very informative, it had very outdated information. A separate booklet was sent with this book, to update some of the information, but even this was outdated material. I don't think enough information was given about the various tests that you have to go through, to be diagnosed. Telling a person more about what to expect during these tests, helps to alleviate the patients fears. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What is Missing from Special Education
Many teachers are fond of saying that, "computers are just another educational tool." This implies that there is no computer revolution in education. A black board or a pencil is very similar to a computer. What they miss is how those tools changed education. Changes in pedagogy did not happen because educators wanted to change education. They happened because humans interacted differently with their environment because of these tools. Assistive Technology: Essential Human Factors, particularly chapters five and nine, helps educators assess how to evaluate the effectiveness of assistive technology and computers. Before you create your lesson plan or schedule an IEP meeting, you should know what an assessment of human factors would tell you about your educational plans.
And if , by chance, you think this is the responsibility of your school district educational technologists, just ask them what they know about the human factors involved in using technology.
This is an excellent book to begin to explore why some assistive technology works and some fails.
