Book Description

Recent research has shown that art therapy can be particularly effective for children with autism and related communication disorders. The extensive range of symptoms experienced by autistic people makes them extremely individual in presentation, so any treatment used must be tailored to a range of varying needs. Art Therapy with Children on the Autistic Spectrum presents a new model of practice, which primarily focuses on communication difficulties. The authors describe how negative behaviors and subsequent tension may be alleviated when the autistic child is involved in interactive art making with the therapist.

The book is divided into three parts: the first part explores art making processes and art work, with an emphasis on how art can be specifically communicative. A history of autism is presented within the therapeutic context. The second part challenges existing methods of practice within art therapy and considers the most appropriate approaches to treating autistic children. The last part discusses research that lead to the formulation of this specific model-methodology and assessment interventions are analyzed, as well as the ongoing development of appropriate assessment instruments. Case studies of art therapy with individual autistic children demonstrate the use of the model and the outcomes. Throughout the book, it is emphasized how art therapy works as an integral part of overall management and treatment approaches to autism. It will be of particular interest to all those professionals working with autistic children and specialists in other communication disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a mother of a brain injured son . . .
This is physical therapy at its finest. The Europeans provide a different way to move with a patient, relate to a patient and begin purposeful movement directly relating to life skills. My son, 4 years post accident, only ate pureed food until we worked with him through Pat's book. He now eats regular food, chewing, etc. This is a Godsend for those who American physical therapy has not worked because of the severity of the injury. These people are masters at getting the severely head injured back into the mainstream of life, without condescention, and with total support. I cannot thank them enough. ... Read more

Book Description

"My belief is that we can all find the rhythms and harmonics of our celestial music, and that our efforts will enable us to live extraordinary lives filled with peace, passion, health, and a sense of unity with the universe."

We are all familiar with the tremendous power of sound to energize our bodies and soothe our spirits, whether we experience it in the form of rousing music or in the hushed noise of waves on a beach at night. A pioneer in the revolutionary new field of sound medicine, Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, a leading oncologist and director of integrative medicine at the Strang-Cornell Cancer Prevention Center, has been using sound as complementary therapy in the form of chanting, music, and quartz crystal bowls to treat patients since 1991 with remarkable results. In Sounds of Healing, he shares his philosophy and sound-based techniques for self-healing, which can be used by anyone, whether faced with a life-threatening disease or simply seeking relief from the stresses of daily life.

Sound, voice, and music are potent tools for restoring the inner balance of the body and awakening the spirit. Dr. Gaynor explores the science behind how and why sound and vibration affect us on a physiological level and outlines the sound traditions and practices that promote relaxation and body-mind healing. Rooted in the musical principles of entrainment, resonance, toning, and harmonics, his methods help us achieve overall wellness, greater energy, and the realization of our highest spiritual potential.

His easy-to-follow exercises include:

  • Life Songs--Discover your personal, mantra-like song that resonates with your own particular essence and use it as a means to healing and self-discovery
  • Essence Sound Meditation--Use your voice or another instrument to help you rise above everyday worries, relieve stress, and begin the healing process
  • Energetic Re-creation--Give voice to your emotional conflicts and create new blends of sound to help you resolve them

Dr. Gaynor also describes his unique vision for a holistic approach to medicine that treats the whole person and creates the conditions for a higher quality of life. An extraordinary blend of science, music, and spirituality, Sounds of Healing is an enlightening, inspiring guide to fostering inner harmony and tuning in to the music of our own souls. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Gaynor Evidences His Own Growth and Acceptance
Healing Essence was highly touted and I purachased it; however, I had a feeling that it was missing something - or I was. Now with this book, Dr. Gaynor, like Chopra, seems to be finding the niche of his essence, and he give the reader the right to find their's. That is HEALING! As a nurse, it was amazing what a sachet of dried lavender attached to a pillow,& backrub would do, or a little music box I carried in my pocket to help neuro patients calm down. That was the 60s. This book shows the expanse of sound, and that one's body responds to that which it particularly needs. Having had chemo, the horrors of the traditional rows of chairs and people 'yapping,' vs what privacy and sound may have done for me brings tears. Just recently, with a new water 'garden,' I placed it in the living room - discomfort overcame me. It took a week to realize I wanted it in my office near to me. I do not work such long spells any longer. I integrate sounds, and relax! There are so many more options I've yet to try thanks to Dr. Gaynor. And, so many practices I'm going to try to change here in Austin, Texas!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Gaynor brings medicine out of the dark ages
Dr. Gaynor integrates sound and emotion as powerful tools in his medical arsenal leading his patients back to health. His use of the healing power of sound compliments the use of conventional medicine. Dr. Gaynor's guided meditations have helped achieve living miralces in "terminal" patients. This book reaffirms anything is possible when we discover what made us ill and how we can rebuild our lives during and after illness. This book is a priceless road map to self discovery and joy. I wish I could give it six stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars a celestial journey
Sounds of Healing is an extraordinary publication. Like a journey within a journey, it is an odyssey along the path of spiritual wisdom, healing and self fulfillment. Like a compass, it directs as it informs-it encourages the reader to meander throughout its pages, enjoying the self direction and spontaneous discovery that are the essence of the spiritual quest. The book together with the Sounds of Healing compact disk moved me towards celestial realms that I have never before experienced.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant and beautiful book.
This is a brilliant and beautiful book superbly written with elegance and gracefulness. It is the most powerful and illuminating source of the role that sound can play in the healing process that I have ever read. Dr. Gaynor has an outstanding grasp of various sounds, techniques, and terms-the "grammatical" elements that make you fluent in the "language" of sound. But he goes far beyond that. He understands and transmits an unbelievable amount of expressive, historical, and even philosophical information. In keeping with that insight, he illuminates the varying circumstances and contexts that have shaped sound down thru the ages. He guides us thru the sounds that are capable of speaking to and from the human soul, and tells us something central about the human condition in each of us. This is a dazzling book which tells us not only about our distant past but also about how that past is able to shape our present and our future. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars outdated
Of interest; the book's authors are throat and mouth specialists. Also, they are not aware that their institution ( Johns Hopkins) is making great strides in SCI research. that's a invaluable contact they neglected to study. Bold predictions are made claiming that SCI will not be cured within several decades, 100 years etc. Yet they tell the reader to move on with your life and still have hope for SCI therapies. Here's the problem- they do the worst thing imaginable, they condescend to the patient, providing false hope, if they clain SCI treatments (valid ones) are hundreds years away, then why should patients stay hopeful if it will not help them or anybody with a SCI in our lifetimes? These are serious claims from authors whose credentials do not include spinal cord injury.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a real life approach!
Since my SCI in May of 1999 we have accumulated a pile of books dealing with various aspects of SCI. At 1/10th the price, this book is many times better than any of the others. Their down to earth approach leads you from the point of injury until the day you make the transition from patient to the new you. Outstanding! ... Read more

My specialty is emergency medicine and I received this book as a gift. It is probably the only book on hand/upper extremity problems that I have found to be truly helpful to me in my practice. 5-0 out of 5 stars Concepts In Hand Rehabilitation by Stanley and Tribuzi
This book was one of the required texts in our OT and Biomechanics class. I am currently an OT student on Fieldwork). This book contains an abundance of useful information. Although it was published in 1992, it has great value. The 17 chapters are: Functional Anatomy; Wound Healing; Clinical Evaluation; Sensibility Testing; Functional Evaluation; Wound Management; Therapeutic Exercise; Physical Agents & Electrotherapy Techniques; Splinting; Skeletal Injuries; Nerve Injuries; Tendon Injuries; Rheumatoid Arthritis; Cumulative Trauma; Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy; Traumatic Injuries of the Hand (crush injuries & amputations); Returning the Hand-Injured Patient to Work. In addition, there are appendixes that include procedure for taking volumetric, goniometric, and strength measurements. While you do need more detailed for modalities, splinting, exercise, and gonimetric measurements, this book is a helpful review of these topics. The entire book is well-organized throughout( i.e.any subheadings, etc.) which makes it an even more valuable reference and study tool. There are some good colored pictures depicting wounds, lots of black and white pictures depicting various treatments. The book also contains lots of good treatment ideas as well. Case studies at end of appropriete chapters do a great job of tying all the material in a chapter together. I feel this book should be a part of the professional library of any student or practicing OT. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope at last!
I was recently diagonsed with Scleroderma (the doctors thought) and have been stunned, depressed, and in a state of disbelief. I saw this book while searching about scleroderma and read it through the first evening I had it. I was EXCITED to learn that the medicine I am on IS the cure spoken of in the book!! Thank God for hope! I bought a copy for my doctor and plan on insisting on the same treatment as spelled out in the book! It is a must read.....for life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The study described in this book just appeared in The Lancet
I cannot imagine a more important book for anyone with this rare but often fatal disease - or for the friends and family of anyone with a diagnosis of scleroderma. The Lancet, ranked by many as the world's premier peer-reviewed medical journal, has just published the results of the small but critical study described in this book. Two thirds of patients completing the 48-week trial were in full remission by the end of the study, with no deaths reported from either scleroderma or the therapy. I read SCLERODERMA after a friend, who knew she was dying, was told by her rheumatologist that there was no effective treatment for her disease; subsequently she went to see Dr. Trentham and this therapy saved her life. I have a question for the reviewer at the bottom of this page. Which doctor is he recommending? The one who was willing to let my friend die, or the one who saved her life by following the protocol described in this book?

5-0 out of 5 stars Another book of "HOPE" by Henry Scammell
A must read for anyone suffering from Scleroderma. This is a well written, highly sensitive piece of writing. The information if offers, is written for the everyday reader to comprehend. It will give you hope, and information so badly needed in this world of toxic drugs. The therapy used in this book is a benign antibiotic, that has brought forth wonderful results with Scleroderma. I do think it should be read in conjunction with Mr. Scammell's, "The New Arthritis Breakthrough". I for one have Lupus, and this protocol has turned my life around.

5-0 out of 5 stars The information in this book saved my life
By the time I was correctly diagnosed with diffuse scleroderma I had skin tightening on my hands, arms, face and torso. The pain in my joints (hands, wrists, shoulders and knees) was excruciating and wake me out of a sound sleep. I was afraid of falling down and not being able to get up and was very concerned that some day I would not be able to work. My doctor told me that I had an incurable disease and my odds for living a normal life expectancy were not good. I devoured all information on scleroderma that I could find. I found Henry Scammell's book and couldn't believe the subtitle "The Proven Therapy that can save your life". I read it with skepticism and thought, how can this be? My doctor didn't mention anything about a therapy that could save my life. In fact, he predicted a painful, progressive disease that would result in my death. Based on all information I had gathered and my options I decided to try this therapy. I am happy to report that after being on this therapy for four months I started to feel better and results of blood tests confirmed it. After one year all of the skin tightening had disappeared, most of the pain was gone and my blood tests were in the normal range. I am getting better with each passing day. I am not worried that I won't be able to work anymore. THANK YOU HENRY!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just incredilble- a hopeful outcome!
I have read Scleroderma:The Proven Therapy That Can Save Your Life. This book gave me hope again when an establishment of medicine had not even provided me with any information on this therapy. I have begun the therapy and already am seeing improvements. I am very hopeful that I will be well again and just want to say to others to find a doctor that will admisnister this correctly to you. ... Read more
