Furthering the presentation of recent research in biochemistry, cell biology, and energy medicine in the Second Edition, this new update includes advances in neurophysiology and physics, reconfiguring knowledge of mind and body, from "microgenesis" to "quantum consciousness." 5-0 out of 5 stars Job's Body: A Handbook for Bodywork
This Book is Pure Poetry of the Human Anatomy, Not your average A&P Book, Reading this book is like reading a good Novel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection!
Absolutely the best bodywork book I've ever read, bar none. I read the first edition of this book about 15 years ago, and it was a big eye-opener for me; I saw the body in a whole new light, it gave me things to think about and apply for years. I wish Deane Juhan would write a lot more books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for anyone interested in healthcare and bodywork
Interesting perspective on how the human body is put together. Well-written and enjoyable to read, yet full of detailed descriptions.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
Great overview of human anatomy and physiology from an integrative perspective. Brings together a lot of scientific information in an easily understood and relevant fashion that particularly explains many aspects of physiology as they apply to massage and bodywork.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Enlightening!
I had bought this for a friend about to start massage school--but I'm KEEPING IT! The writing communicates a deep love and interest in the body and how it works, and how we respond to touch as healing. This is a wonderful way to learn about the anatomy and physiology of our living, working bodies. ... Read more

Book Description

In the 15 years since publication of the first edition, Steps to Follow has gained a worldwide reputation among professionals as a unique practical guide to the treatment of neurologically impaired patients.

This second, completely updated edition incorporates significant practical advances in early and later neurorehabilitation and in the understanding of the problems confronting both patients and those who work with them.

The relevant therapeutic activities to improve functional ability and quality of life following a stroke are described in detail with the help of 750 photos showing patients in action during treatment.

-Practical ways in which patients can be helped to interact more normally with their environment and so regain their independence, in spite of the perceptual disorders often associated with hemiplegia
-More detailed explanation of hand function and more in-depth analysis of normal walking
-Revised chapters on the various therapeutic activities, including new ways to retrain selective movements and prevent or counteract increases in muscle tone
-Deeper understanding of abdominal muscle activity, which is relevant to retraining balance reactions and sitting and standing
-A new chapter demonstrating how David Butler's concept of the mobilization of neural structures throughout the body can be of inestimable value
-Examples of ways in which therapists, nurses and relatives can help to avoid the development of secondary complications such as pain and loss of range of motion or overcoming existing difficulties
-Ways in which the patient can maintain mobility and continue to make progress even after cessation of treatment, by exercising at home and participating in sporting and other leisure activities ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book adn a MUST HAVE for any one in PT pratice
I use this book in my physical therapy pratice all the time. It's a great quick refrence book. Any student PT or PTA should get this book if its required or not. It had wonderful pictures and great directions. It's very helpful in understanding therapudic exercise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted
This book was exactly what I was looking for and came to me in great condition. The arrival date was earlier than expected, which is always a plus!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a good foundation book
This is a good book for beginning students of therapeutic exercise and mobilization techniques. It gives the basic foundation of the treatments and the sound reasoning behind it. It is a good book to have for P.T. and A.T.C. students just starting out in their career and a good reference book once out in the working field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
I got this book years ago in an earlier edition in Physical therapy school. I found it very helpful since it is full of ideas for treatment and exercises for some different diagnoses. Of course, I used it a lot in school in a few courses, it was invaluable in the clinic when I was doing a lot of outpatient orthopaedic patients. Since I am now doing inpatient acute patients I have rarely used this book, but I still have it as a reference because you never know when it may be useful to brush up on. I recommend that you get this book if you are in school or think that clinical ortho patients are your niche.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
This is an excellent manual, covering many essential topics in a well-organized style. Techniques are clearly explained and often are accompanied by a diagram. The large, sturdy spiral makes the book easy to use. Although the pages are a little thin and may leak through with an ordinary highlighter, they are certainly thick enough to easily be underlined with a colored pen or pencil. This book has become my essential, often-consulted reference for therapeutic exercise techniques. ... Read more

Book Description

This book is a practical guide to the application of PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) in the treatment of patients with orthopedic problems and with neurologic dysfunctions. The approach presented here is based on the concepts set out by Dr. Herman Kabat and taught by Margaret (Maggie) Knott. The authors, experienced PNF teachers, show how they use the PNF method for effective evaluation, planning and treament, and thus provide the reader with a clear understanding of why, how and when PNF techniques are applied. The book`s special feature is the detailed photographic documentation of PNF patterns, mat and gait activities, and their functional application. This unique combination of photographs and concise text guides students learning PNF and stimulates therapists familiar with the method to review and improve their skills. 5-0 out of 5 stars PNF in Practice
This is a very good textbook. I am currently a Doctor of Physical Therapy student and this was a recommended book by my professor to help us learn PNF techniques. There are excellent descriptions and great diagrams. The only thing that would have made this a better book is if the diagrams were in color. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the benefits and techniques of PNF as well as most health care proffessionals. Being a student, this was also a very easy book to comprehend due to the great descriptions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text
Charles Ciccone who wrote this text was my teacher in physical therapy school at Ithaca College. Throughout college, everyone knew that if the class was taught by him we would all have an easy time understanding all of the concepts. He was a great teacher who really knew how to explain even the more difficult topics and pharmacology was no exception. This textbook was extrememly useful as it not only explains what types of drugs have specific effects on the body and it's systems, but it is particularly detailed in describing the impact that the drugs may have on rehab. Even in class, this was one aspect that he reinforced. He explained that the reason for talking about certain classes of drugs and then giving a few examples is because the drug world is always changing and so are the names. This way he has provided a wealth of knowledge and in a very easy to understand manner.

I have been out of school for about 3 years and I still occassionally refer to this book when encountering some classes of drugs and this is a great reference to have. I would highly recommend this text to anyone, that is especially if you can't be in one of his classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive pharmacology text for all rehab professionals.
Pharmacology in Rehabilitation by C.D. Ciccone is an all inclusive text and post-graduate reference on drugs, pharmakokinetics, action/side effects/interactions. Of paramount interest and use is the section within each class of drugs entitled "special considerations in rehabilitation."

Section I is a self contained unit in pharmacokinetics with enough detail for any non-prescribing rehab professional. I am sure prescribing clinicians would also find these explanations clear and helpful in deciphering the more involved pharmacology texts.

Section II: CNS, deals with not only the pharmacology but offers an excellent review of the CNS organization and neurotransmitters. I very much enjoyed the section explaining the blood-brain barrier which is clear and removes all mystery. The clinical case studies offered for each specific class of drugs are very realistic and offer a fine teaching tool for the case based academician.

Every section not only teach! ! es the pharmacology involved but reviews all normal and abnormal physiology content involved. Sections cover pain medications, antibiotics, cardiopulmonary classes including antihypertensives, endocrinology and oncology.

This reference text is far more extensive than is reflected in this brief review.

I highly recommend this text as a stand alone text in the classroom and as a post-graduate reference for the clinician's bookshelf. A copy alongside of the PDR in the clinic would be a well used reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of "The Patella"
This is an excellent compilation of current evidence-based practices from a inter-disciplinary approach -- orthopaedic surgeon, physiotherapists, podiatrist-- to treatment of knee pathologies. Its authors are practitioners and researchers who are specialised and reknown in this field of work. It covers topics from the anatomy and biomechanics of the knee and patella, the various aetiologies and pathologies of the knee and patella, and treatment of the conditions. Related aspects like radiography and electromyography are also covered. What is really attractive about this book is it is based on research evidence, which have been up-to-date, and includes lists of references, and many illustrations. It is a comprehensive, pertinent and readable overview of the patella disorders and their managements that allows one to further explore areas of interests using the references. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great for beginning neurons
This book is excellent for a general overview of neurology. It's especially useful during first year call nights as well as neurology rotations. Though it does not delve deeply into most illnesses, it offers a substanial differential diagnosis to build upon despite lack of treatment recommendations. Very easy to read as well and convenient to carry.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for the entry level clinician
This is a fine book for a clinician who is not at the entry level of competence. I recommend it for neurology interns and advanced medical students, mainly because there is not a better one in print. I think it lacks many therapeutic details, is too long for the student looking for a quick read power review, too limited for the advanced clinician.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Neurology
Aminoff et al have produced a very readable introduction to Neurology. Most chapters are exceedingly well written, for the 'introductory' level. The only criticism that I would make is that therapeutic details are slightly thin...if these areas are muscled out it would be nice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Neurology
This book simplifies clinical neurology. I have read some books that are hard to understand. You will love neurology after reading this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A little goldmine
I teach massage therapy here in Australia. Often, students will ask about books they should buy in order to become better therapists, and this is one that I always happily recommend. The techniques are well explained and relatively easy to apply. What's more they are safe, as well as beautifully effective. Anyone interested in improving their results with bodywork should have a look at this (and most of Chaitow's work, as far as I am concerned!).

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
This is the best book I've come across for introducing a novice to the concepts and practice of MET. Chaitow's other books tend to go into very minute detail about the nervous system component of these techniques. This book is very well ordered and the assessments and techniques don't get lost in the minutae. HIs very clear presentation of the far-reaching effects of dysfunction in one part of the body is excellent. If you are interested in these techniques, this is the book! You can then follow up with his other books on the subject, especially Soft Tissue Manipulations. I'm using this book in a medical massage program in which I am an instructor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I would have given it more stars if I could've...
This book is THAT good. It is the most clear and concise book on various pathologies that I have seen since entering PT school a decade ago. It's a huge book that covers every illness one could possibly think of. As a required text for my tDPT program I was a little put off initially by the price but it is well worth the expense. I have used it frequently when a client has presented with symptoms which just didn't match their referral dx. I have also used it with family members and friends who have been diagnosed with serious illnesses and it has been very informative. This should be in every PT's personal library...you can always ask for it on your wishlist! Also, if you have a chance to take a continuing ed course from Ms. Goodman, please do...I had the opportunity last month and she was a very dynamic speaker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well organized and directly applicable
This text is the most valuable one I own. The information is extremely useful and is written in very understandable language. Book Description

In this revised and expanded second edition of Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, now with over 300 color photographs, leading exercise science professionals explore the scientific principles, concepts, and theories of strength training and conditioning as well as their practical applications to athletic performance.

Students, coaches, strength and conditioning specialists, personal trainers, athletic trainers, and other sport science professionals will find state-of-the-art, comprehensive information on structure and function of body systems, training adaptations, testing and evaluation, exercise techniques, program design (aerobic and anaerobic) and training facility organization and administration.

Edited by Thomas R. Baechle and Roger W. Earle, Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, Second Edition, is an excellent text for students preparing for careers in strength training and conditioning. It is the most comprehensive reference available for strength and conditioning professionals and sports medicine specialists. For people preparing to take the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist examination, it is the primary preparation resource. Those preparing to take the NSCA Certified Personal Trainer examination will also find it to be a valuable resource. The NSCA Certification Commission, the certifying body of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, has developed this text.

Each of the book’s 26 chapters provides an overview of an important aspect of strength and conditioning and includes chapter objectives, application boxes, key points, key terms, study questions, and questions requiring practical application of key concepts.

In Section 1 of Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, Second Edition, experts in exercise physiology, biochemistry, anatomy, biomechanics, endocrinology, sports nutrition, and sport psychology discuss the principles of their respective areas of expertise and how they apply in designing safe, effective strength and conditioning programs.

Section 2 discusses the selection, administration, scoring, and the interpretation of testing results. Section 3 provides information regarding the correction and execution of stretching, warm-up, and resistance training exercises.

Section 4 applies information from the first three sections to the design of effective strength training and conditioning programs, both aerobic and anaerobic. The three parts of Section 4 address anaerobic exercise prescription, aerobic endurance exercise prescription, and periodization and rehabilitation. The anaerobic prescription section provides guidelines for resistance and plyometric training as well as for speed, agility, and speed endurance programs. Step-by-step guidelines are given for designing strength and conditioning programs, and application boxes illustrate how each variable applies to athletes with different training goals. A unique feature of this edition is the use of scenarios to illustrate how the guidelines presented for each of the program design variables are applied to attain the different training scores.

Section 5 addresses facility design, scheduling, policies and procedures, maintenance, and risk management concerns. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the Bible of physical conditioning
This book is a must have for anyone serious about improving their athletic performance. Filled with no-nonsense information for everything from strength training to aerobic conditioning to nutrition to biomechanics. This book is very technical and the information is very daunting. You must have a background in exercise science or sports medicine to fully comprehend everything. A big drawback to the book is the descriptions of exercise technique. The illustrations are sloppy and there are some outdated exercises featured that could be potentially dangerous to many athletes. This book is only five years old but the exercise science field changes fast and an updated version would probably make this book five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
What a great text ! Here is a deep yet clearly/visually presented text on physical training. I've read a number of
strength-training books, but most are dominated by the
body-building mentality. This book will make you think
like a coach and help you understand sport-specific
training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book to start for scientifically inclined people
First what this book is NOT:
If you are in a big hurry to start exercise or if you do not like the thorough scientific approach to bodybuilding, go for other books. Also this book does not give the exercises (just very few basic ones).

Finally what this book is for:
The book is intended for training schools; it gives only the scientifically proven facts, and gives these facts clearly and is very well organized.

I give it 5 stars because it is exactly what it says it is (very honest approach). The good thing is that bodybuilding world is full of dirt (wrong or suspicious information is everywhere), so this book would clear the mess in the non-educated person's mind and give the most precious information - the PROVEN ESSENTIAL information. And by proven I do not mean proven by Joe Amateur who tried that on himself only - as usually is the case, but SCIENTIFICALY proven. That is the biggest advantage of this book.

Unfortunately, this book cannot guard you from all frauds in the field of bodybuilding because the field is too complex and no book can cover everything. If you start with this book, then if you buy some books on exercising, then exercise regularly as your (new) way of living, than think a lot about your training, and maybe some other things...., you will enjoy the most benefits of good health and strong body. A lot of ifs, I know, but every knowledge is hard to grasp.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read for the physical conditioning specialist
This is a high level scientific book. Before reading it you should be familiar with knowledge of human anatomy and exercise physiology - undergraduate level.
If you want to read about everything you need to know about physical conditioning in just one book this is what you were looking for.
I've expected some more information on the athletic training subject, but you can not hope to find everything the exercise science has to offer in a 650 pages book. However the book respects its title ofering you "the essentials".
I also admire the author's objectivity about some athletic nutritive supplements - it is telling you that you shouldn't waste your money on many of them.
Because it is not written by a single author it makes you look back and forth and sometimes repeats some information.
Overall is a complete and reliable resource of scientific knowledge. I go back to it anytime I think I need to remember something.

1-0 out of 5 stars Tricked by five star reviews
I purchased this book mainly because of the positive remarks I read here on Amazon. The reviews are helpful in guiding my purchase most of the time but this time I got burned. There are some very important things that I have to clear up.

1. This book is NOT organized well. Similar pieces of information that would make more sense in the same section or chapter are many chapters apart. I spend a great deal of time flipping between chapters linking one fact to another trying to piece together underlying principles or purposes behind similar functionality, AND angrily wondering why so many similar sections were haphazardly scattered throughout the text.
2. The writing is DRY. I am a scientist, and I hate having to plow through technical, monotonous, fact-driven, unispired lectures. Scientific writing does not have to cause headaches or blurry vision. I'm not looking for a text that romances me with an ambiance of literary magic. I just want something worded in a way that is lucid, meaningful, and to the point ("Understanding Nutrition" is an excellent example of intelligent scientific writing that is also very readable). This text in sharp contrast is choppy, cumbersome, and aggravating.
3. "However" I am so sick of seeing this word thanks to this text. However shows up in the strangest places. Over and over again. It is very distracting to have to constantly stumble across this word while trying to make sense of the rest of the drivel surrounding it.

I am sure this book is a wealth of valuable information. It is just not worth it for me to spend the extra time and energy mining the text for that information. There are other books that cover the same material just in a logical order and worded in a more conversational -- less clinical -- way.

My last piece of advice is to do what I didnt do: check out the example pages. They wont convey the weak organization because the Table of Contents actually looks kinda organized but its deceptive. They will at least clue you in to writing style, but keep in mind that it only gets worse as the book goes along.
Compare it to the style in the example pages for a very similar book "Physiology of Sport and Exercise". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written overview of diseases
I bought this to prepare for the NCBTMB test and found this guide to be useful and HIGHLY readable as well! Well worth the money. I photocopied the back appendix and keep it in the office--a great reference!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
This well-written and concise book gives information on many type of pathologies the massage therapist should be familar with. I also used this book as a reference for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and found it pretty helpful. However, if you are looking for the type of questions asked on the NCETMB, I would buy the following which is also sold on amazon.com:

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good for learning pathologies
I am a massage therapist and used this book to teach myself the various pathologies. I recommend this book highly to any massage therapist who needs more knowledge in pathology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!
This book was recommended to me by another Massage Therapist. I am so glad I took her recommendation. The book is fantastic! I use it a lot and can always find what information I need. Therapists, you won't go wrong in purchasing this book. I highly recommend it for new graduates or any Therapist that wants current information at their fingertips.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for clinical massage therapy
I have used this book time and time again. I had this text in massage school directly after its publication, and I am glad I did. I use it continually in my practice. It has been a useful resource for myself and clients for understanding pathologies. Its recommendations are conservative, of course, for liability purposes. Pathologies are explained in a concise, easy to understand manner. It is the first resource I consult when confronted with questions of conditions and pathologies. I consider it a must for any licensed massage therapist, especially those who work in clinical massage therapy. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars worth a buy if you do not mind typos
Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Techniques is an alternative to Travell's Trigger Point Manual if you do not do TP injections. It has great pictures, well explained treatment techniques (if you are up to date with your anatomy and medical terms) and lots of references. The disadvantage are typos (the editor must have had a bad day and was unable to write the German words for the references right, but also some English words are off!) Parts of the text are repeated in the book twice, what I thought is unnecessary and only adds to the number of pages but not the quality of content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the money!
I'm an Advanced Practitioner of Massage Therapy and find this book VERY helpful. The Muscle Energy Techniques (M.E.T.s) are explained very thoroughly, and the accompanying drawings, and or pictures, are very helpful. While familiar with the M.E.T.s, having this book as a reference for all the upper body muscles, and their positioning for the best M.E.T. applications, is very rewarding. I'd recommend this book highly to anyone that has a basic understanding of the therapeutic aspects of massage and M.E.T.s.
Mr. Chiatow and Ms. Delany, PLEASE!!! I can't wait for the next volume! I'm sure the Lower Body will be as good!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Techniques - Vol. I
This is a really clearly written, concise book, with drawings and pictures of muscle positions, trigger points, etc. I bought the Jane Travell Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction Books before this one came out, and for the money wish I had bought the Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Tech. Book. Unless you are a Physician, who wants to inject the patient's trigger points with a saline solution, and then you better be very exact in your aim with the needle, I think the Clinical Application of Neurom. Tech. Book is a much more practical, useful, hands on, straight forward book that addresses all the trigger points, origins and insertions of the muscles in a very user friendly way. Until this book came out, Jane Travell's was the only great reference guide; but what patient really likes injections? Now this book surpasses Dr. Travells, in that all the material in it is useful and usable. Can't wait for Vol. II, Lower Body, to come out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful for chiropractic students/doctors
Dr. Hammer is a great writer. He doesn't ignore the subluxation complex as in some texts supposenly related to chiropractic. Dr. Hammer shows how soft tissue injury is related to the subluxation. When I took the national boards of chiropractic, I used this book as one of my references for Part II section--Chiropractic Practice, and also for Part III. Little advice for taking the boards, get Souza's book, Differential Diagnosis for the Chiropractor. Also, Patrick Leonardi's study guides, National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers, National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
These study guides have questions that were excellent because they were the kind encountered on the exams. Also souza's book was very helpful for chiropractic practice and Part III. Dr. Warren's book was also on the mark for Chiropractic Practice section of part II.

5-0 out of 5 stars Functional Soft Tissue Examination and Treatment by Manual M
As an athletic trainer at a large high school in Pennsylvania, I found this book very helpful in every day treatment of various ailments my athletes complained of. Although the process can be complex, the soft tissue treatments are very helpful and this book I have found to be a very valuable asset.

5-0 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE BOOK!
Dr. Hammer has done a marvelous job in describing and picturing the soft tissue component of the subluxation complex. As a Chiropractor, this book has been invaluable to me AND the patients who have benefitted from the knowledge I have gained from Dr. Hammer. THANK YOU, DR. HAMMER!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must book for anyone interested in manual medicine.
