Book Description

Clinical Applications for Motor Control is a comprehensive text that will help bridge the gap between motor control/motor learning research and practical clinical applications.Written by a variety of physical therapists with a broad range of clinical expertise areas such as neurophysiology, biomechanics, and human motor control, this text is rich in a multitude of topics. The case-study format that is applied throughout the text amplifies the principles of motor control research and demonstrates the transfer of information from research studies to clinical settings. Incorporated throughout Clinical Applications for Motor Control are the concepts and language of the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice. The text begins with an introductory and historical review of traditional neurophysiologic treatment approaches and new theoretical alternatives. This comprehensive review establishes a foundation for the remaining chapters that address topics such as motor control, learning and development; musculoskeletal considerations; sensory and cognitive systems underlying the production and control of movement; disorders of the control of limb movement; and gait. Five case studies representing common clinical problems are included throughout the text to facilitate clinical problem solving. This innovative style is geared towards the student who has limited clinical experience, while also serving as a useful reference for the practicing clinician. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars a VERY basic introduction
I found this book to be an extremely basic introduction to the field of Physical Therapy. It might be helpful to a student in High School (or perhaps even Junior High) But for an undergraduate or grad student it was of little or no help. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
This book was required as supporting material for an OT program. This book is full of mistakes and the diagrams are very hard to follow, misleading, and/or mislabeled. Truly a waste of money, save your money and check it out from the school library and photocopy the darn thing if you have to use it. Useless is an understatement.

1-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Kinesiology -- Save Your Money!
This text book is an abomination. It is riddled with mistakes, often incomprehensible in its explanations, and fairly useless as a reference book. Its schematics and diagrams are consistently mislabeled and confusing. The salient points of each chapter are either obscured or misguided. Avoid this mess; don't waste your time or your money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never again will I use this for a textbook
I made the mistake of selecting this book to teach functional anatomy and kinesiology. There are numerous mistakes and emphasis in the text is on information that is not pertinent for PTAs. The author neglects other information that is essential for PTA students. I ended up trashing the book midway through the semester and creating my own "text". I am just sorry my students paid hard-earnded money for this text that they will never use as a reference.
Reviews from students were summarized as a "D".

4-0 out of 5 stars An easy textbook to read
Of all the books I've had for Anatomy for the PTA, this book has been very easy to read. If it weren't for some major mistakes(the diagram of the hip bone is way off),I'd keep the book forever as a refernce book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing.
This book has been very poorly edited. It's layout is haphazard and its anatomical illustrations are so poorly rendered as to make them essentially useless. This is surprising given that the publisher (F.A. Davis) is responsible for a large body of excellent medical texts and reference works.

This text, now in its 3rd edition, requires 3 full pages of errata. The errata sheets have been produced locally by teachers and students, not supplied by the publisher. My experience would indicate that a complete errata listing could run to 5 or 6 pages, or more!

The accompanying lab manual is somewhat useful, but suffers greatly from the same childishly drawn illustrations that are frequently inaccurate, or simply too badly drawn to be helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beard's Massage
This book covers everything a massage therapist needs to know, things I wasn't even taught in massage school. If you want to know it all, get this book. It is wonderful and I plan on using it as THE massage book for the massage school I am opening this year. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good textbook for chiropractic and osteopathic students
This book is very complete and gives full descriptions of the anatomy of the spine. I would recommend this book for any chiropractic students taking a class in spinal anatomy, for any osteopathic student taking gross anatomy and any physical therapy students taking anatomy classes. However, I would also recommend the following which is also sold on amazon.com:
Spinal Anatomy Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi (ISBN: 0971999600)
This study guide will definitely give you an edge on tests and prepare first year chiropractic students to know the type of questions to be ready for. If you want to pass spinal anatomy without stress and get good grades, both books are a must buy. My study group and I used both books and we all passed spinal anatomy class with at least a B in our chiropractic school.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book.
Basic and Clinical Anatomy of the Spine, Spinal Cord and ANS will collect no dust on your shelf. Whether you are faculty, a new student, or a practicing physician, this text is an excellent source of accurate, up-to-date information that is presented in an easy to use, quick reference, format. The exquisite detail of the numerous tables is all-inclusive and very helpful (i.e. chapter four [muscles that influence the spine] contains a 7 page layout of the name, location, origin, insertion, action, and innervation of every muscle that affects the spine). The text also contains excellent photographs and artistic renderings of all the anatomy discussed within. If you can only afford a couple texts, make this one of your purchases.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for medically-based chiropractors.
Written by DC's and PhD's at National College of Chiropractic. Red ruled sections give relevant clinical information, which is nice, and chapter 11 (pain of spinal origin)is very helpful, but it can sometimes read like stereo instructions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for the whiplash physician
Dr. Nordhoff has put together an outstanding work that I use literally every week in my practice. I rate it as one of the top 2 books on the subject (The other is by Foreman and Croft). While our udnerstanding of the actual mechanisms of whiplash has changed in the past year (1999-2000), the rest of this publication is timely, informative, and balanced.

The illustrations are relative and informative, and the guidelines it presents are clinically effective. ... Read more
